Do you have an opinion on the phenomenon of bullying arising as a method for enforcing social conformity, and how that might relate to institutions turning a blind eye towards it, effectively considering it just another part of education? I just stumbled on your channel, and I've been wondering if there's a lot of work done on this aspect of bullying.
I know people in and out of the game see Jimmy as a delinquent and a bad boy. But he’s honestly one of the only sane and moral people in the game (along with Pete), even though he has the option to do whatever he wants in free mode. If you thought Jimmy was bad, look at everyone he deals with at Bullworth. Despite the misleading title, the game doesn’t reward or encourage outright bullying, you get rewarded for helping others, making peace with the cliques and attending classes. Even the devs said Jimmy isn’t the type of guy to grow up and be a GTA character. Gary on the other certainly would (he might actually be the titular bully)
Agreed! Jimmy definitely has his own unique way of dealing with things but personally I don’t believe he means to do wrong. Gary on the other hand… Well he might need a video of his own.
Exactly he aint a angel too he just stays quiet minding his own bussiness(i also find it hilarious that lots of youtubers say he "helps" the nerds even too thats not truth he works for them bcs theyre the weakest and least popular so theyre the only ones willing to pay)
Jimmy is a good person *in general* in comparison to other characters, but he did some very questionable things. it's been a long time since i played bully, but i remember there was a mission where Jimmy helps a teacher steal female students' underwear, and there is this cheerleader girl he took nude pictures of in one mission, fully aware they will be spread, and then helped her get rid of these photos to make out with her, making her believe he's a hero when he's actually the cause of this awful situation. and when he became 'the king of the school', he acted A LOT like Gary. i think it wouldn't take long before he ditched Pete, too. so... i like Jimmy, but i probably shouldn't (lol).
Jimmy couldn’t stand bullies. That was his motivation throughout the game, bully all of the bullies into submission.. also Jimmy came from way rougher environments than Bullworth I believe, so he wanted to show those bording school kids that they weren’t as tough as they thought themselves to be.
That and to be left alone if it wasnt for Gary causing troubles with the preps he would leave everyone alone. Jimmy knows how to fight because people keep messing with the new kid
Yes, but Jimmy was also a bit of a mercenary since he did some shitty things for money along the way of sticking up to bullies although he did have some core values that he kept for himself and that he would never cross no matter how doing so would benefit him. In a way, I feel like he behaves morally and ethically exactly how a troubled, angry, violence prone and cynical teenager would behave so I do not really think the shitty things he did defines his character since teen years are often the years which adults regret their past, impulsive, moral attitudes the most.
@@thalissevero7627Jimmy was in a situation where everyone from the top down was an asshole and a wack job in some way, shape, or form. A guy like Jimmy reacts to that situation by going on the attack and dominating as much as possible. Sure he does some asshole things but this is a rockstar game, everyone is an asshole. Pete might be nicer but the dudes to much of a doormat to ever really stand on his own. Jimmy can be a chill dude as we see but he can also step up and start swinging when it’s needed.
Perception in society is a significant theme of the game. Jimmy is a victim that decided to fight back, but is perceived as a bully & a troublemaker. Whereas Gary is perceived as a victim & a bystander, but in reality is not *just* a bully; but a complete psychopath that decided to play with the lives of others for his own amusement.
Which is realistic to reality, I was bullied as a small child, teachers didn’t help and would often turn a blind eye, it only become a problem once I stood up for myself and kicked their ass, then suddenly I’m the bad guy and the aggressor. Quite honestly it’s really common how often that’s the case, people don’t care until you lash out and defend yourself but the bullying that caused that wasn’t an issue
@bruhdon4748 I've experienced that myself with the Advance Wars subreddit and their lies saying they denounce a sexual assailant (Mangs) yet do NOTHING about the efforts to support the bastard that use conceited attempts at subtlety. It's amazing how this bull is normalized. It's been needing to stop.
The thing that I like about Jimmy is that he doesn't fight bullies and cliques for his own amusement, but rather to prove them wrong and show them the error of their ways, sure there are moments where he steps out of line like declare himself as king of the school and pull parks like spray on top of the building but characters like Gary and the leaders of the other cliques were much worse.
he does become haughty as his influence in Bullworth grows, but i think it's because to him it's a gulp of air after drowning. i never saw Jimmy as a bully, he's more like a victim of bullying who chose fighting back as a survival tactics. Jimmy's been through so much crap that kids from Bullworth are just a bunch of posers to him. he had to literally fight his way through life, and he said it himself several times that he just wants to be left alone, just imagine how fed up he must be after switching seven schools where he endured the same kind of treatment. and all of the sudden the pattern changes, and now he's finally popular, respected and admired. i can see why that would make him act like a bit of a douche.
Its because you're misreading the story. As Jimmy Hopkins rises to the top at Bullworth Academy, it becomes clear that his success in overcoming the various factions begins to cloud his judgment. Initially, Jimmy never set out to conquer the school; this was part of Gary Smith’s manipulative plan. Gary, who saw Jimmy as little more than muscle for his scheme, aimed to control the school by exploiting Jimmy’s fighting skills. However, things took a turn when Gary, skipping his medication and becoming increasingly paranoid, betrayed Jimmy and managed to turn the whole school against him. Faced with the entire student body as his adversary, Jimmy had to fight his way through the chaos. His eventual victory and rise to power weren’t something he had originally sought, but as he succeeded, the very position Gary had coveted now belonged to him. Unfortunately, Jimmy's newfound power got to his head, leading to a sense of cockiness as he basked in the control that Gary had once plotted for himself . Meanwhile petey just didnt have any factions he belonged to hence why he hung out with jimmy and gary as they were the only other two who were independent of factions.
In the intro cutscene we see jimmy as disrespectful and annoying to their parents (i know the other is his stepdad) he's presented to be the "Bully" of the game, but as soon he's droped at the school he inmediatly shows his softer side "Mom... Why did you marry that phony?" He's pretty much only posing as a tough guy, but deep inside he's just an insecure kid who only knows how to deal with his problems in one way... Sticks and stones! His relationships with other characters shows that, when he talks to other cliques or teacher he's the "whatever, shut up, i don't care" but when he is with Pete, his only true friend in the school he opens up, showing his true colors, he even tried to show that side of him to gary "I can't get into trouble anymore" only to be called a scared little girl and a coward.
@@GamePsychYT Oh, Definitely! Pete was the moral compass for Jimmy, when he was de-throned and all the other cliques started hating him, Pete was the only one that stayed by his side. Without him i don't know what would have happened
@@GamePsychYTI think if Pete wasn't there, jimmy would get discouraged real fast when things go south. Having a friend by your side in the midst of tough times makes so much difference. The dude you replied to was right, jimmy wasn't an outright bully, but he doesn't know other ways to solve his problems aside from using violence, and he really only opened up to Pete. Jimmy is a softy deep inside. Without Pete, he might dive deep to depression when he was "dethroned"
"So, here I am at probably the worst school in the country, whose alumni are nothing but arms dealers, serial killers, and corporate lawyers - real scum. And that old creep thinks he can tame me? We shall see, my friend. I only give people what they have coming to them." This summarises exactly who Jimmy is and what he thinks of Bullworth. He's a rebel at heart. He's verbally abusive, but he's fair. He doesn't physically harm people without reason unless you make him. He knows from right to wrong and tries to make up for his mistakes, alongside standing up for the weak, like Pete and Angie. That's not a bully. That's not a hero. That's a misguided child who needs direction in his life.
The dysfunctional family thing really is hard hitting truth. I had a bully in highschool that I turned into a friendship when I learned their interests aligned with my own (Video games and drawing comics.). I'd hang out with him and share my drawing book with him casually, and we'd go to video game stores to rent their PS2 in the back to play some "Champions of Norrath" together. He was a child of divorce, and his violent tendencies never went away, but I'd always laugh it off and he'd grow to become one of my closest friends. He'd even stand by me if somoene else tried to bully me. Looking back, my primary motivation for holding onto his friendship was lonliness, but I guess we kinda saved each other in a werid way.
Cant say the same sadly. All my Bullies (and i had ALOT) where as*holes. Even standing up against them didn't helped, they just came back in bigger numbers.
I once bullied someone because he was from a rival group (hood vs hood thing, very common where and when i grew up), we end up in a party together and became best friends, also when his og friends began to treat him like crap i stood beside him making the tough guy act to stop their shit I still remember this like it was yesterday, it happened around 12 years ago
He was the equalizer. Someone who absolutely could bully mercilessly, but instead took that ability and harnessed it into stopping folk from doing that to folk who don't deserve it. As long as you arent an unnecessary asshole then you have nothing to sweat from Mr. Hopkins.
@@GamePsychYT Fighting Moves?? He can be like the Hobo, Philips and Galloway combined; an old wise men mentoring in fights but conveying peace/diplomacy over aggression.
An interesting thing to note is how during chapter 2 or 3 he tries befriending the preps and greasers respectively before inevitably starting to get bullied by the group
@@GamePsychYT no, it only takes common sence, if you don't defend yourself they will always come back. Even if you loose they will respect the fact that you stood up for yourself Kids who won't defend themselves honestly deserves to be bullied. Grow a fucking spine and stand up for yourself. Many tried to bully me as a kid and I never let them. I would even defend others who got bullied before giving them shot and telling them to stand up for themselves. Always been a skinny little bitch and everyone being nearly twice my size has never changed anything. Act like a spineless coward and they will treat you as such
Or: They dont take you seriously and only bully you harder if you stand up for yourself. At least that was sadly the experience what i made. Those pricks are always stronger and harder if they a numerous

I think what I like about this game back in the day was that the “victims” were often just as reprehensible as their persecutors. But you have characters like Pete and Gary to show a more realistic portrayal of bullying. Jimmy is the Imperfect Victim, he’s the person that society will label as abnormal for fighting back.
Jimmy is an absolute great character, even as I've gotten older, the more I can identify with Hopkins. The corruption happening blatantly in front and you being the only one who sees the nonsense and wants to put a halt to it no matter what for morality sake when even you've been dealt a terrible hand. As well as the endearing attitude really sells me for his character as a whole. And to go through it at 15 years old, I get it's a game, but wow if there were others in his shoes, major kudos and mad respect to you all! Love this game and thank you Rockstar!
It is a interesting character, on one hand he has very little respect or reasons to give it, to the weirdo kids and mostly does it for his own benefit. Yet he also doesn’t seem particularly angry at them when they keep acting up and towards the end acts more benevolent despite them not behaving any better. He’s like a prefect himself trying to educate the annoying kids, without losing patience. With the addition of severe corporal punishment as a regular tool.
Great Video. I myself was bullied in school, and my parents were abusive up until social services came in. It wasn't the average kinda bullying, though. I'm autistic, I had a really short fuse, and whenever I tried to stand up for myself in class, I got sent to detention. Punish the victim, just another sign of a worsening school system, if you ask me. Anyway, needless to say, it was targeted. My biggest problem with all of it was the fact that I was the one who got reprimanded for trying to defend myself either verbally or physically. There was no justice or logic to any of it. At that point, I had little to no trust in any of the teachers or students and was constantly on edge. So, I do relate to Jimmy in terms of being a victim of an unstable family and a corrupt school system. It was an unfair world, so we both stopped playing by the rules.
@GamePsychYT Thanks, I've moved past it, and I'm doing much better now. It sucked but so do a lot of things about life. Gotta take the good with the bad 'n shit.
Jimmy in the story (take away player actions) clearly hates bullies, any age, any size & in any position be it school kids and children right the way up to adults in positions of power, police, teachers & politicians. He hates anyone who abuses power & hates anyone who picks on people who aren’t in that same position. Jimmy is rough around the edges but he’s at least fair and has honour. I’ve never seen Jimmy as a bully whatsoever even when I was a kid & even when I was 15 (same age as Jimmy) he’s the guy who bullies the bully as pay back for being a bully in the first place.
Honestly, my partner and I have been going through the game, and yeah, I can tell from a far, Far distance that Jimmy ain't a bad kid. There are several moments in cutscenes where Jimmy had the perfect moment to make a person's life even worse for them, but he doesn't. Even if he likely is more motivated my being rewarded for his time spent, he understands what being bullied is like for other people. Jimmy cares a lot more about others then he shows, wether he knows it or not.
2006's greatest Anti-Hero protagonist but is willing to do the right thing to stop the chaos from the campus. Just give me the second sequel of Bully, Rockstar ffs!
It's player dependent. Jimmy can bully other kids but the game itself doesn't really encourage you to do it, it's sort of like in Red Dead Redemption where you can play as a high honor hero or a low honor scumbag. And canonically speaking Jimmy seems more like the type who would stand up for the oppressed than the oppressor.
Funny you mention red dead, keep an eye out 👀. Also I defo agree, Jimmy stands up for the oppressed groups but I guess his ways of supporting them are a tad bit violent 😅
When I was really young, I didn't play Bully at all and was only able to watch gameplay videos of it (not because my parents didn't want me playing it or anything, it was just so rare to find a physical copy), so I spent years thinking it was a game where you played as a...bully Glad I was proven wrong tbh, I'd hate playing as what-would-basically-be a younger Trevor Philips
The game doesn't allow healthy or prosocial action. You have to bully your way forward. He's a bully even if he doesn't fit the model you mention of a lack of social skills. Given that, he's still a redeemable, sympathetic antihero.
I mean blatantly obviously not, the _entire_ story is about standing up for those who can't. The best early examples of this are both Jimmy sticking around to actually get to know the homeless vet behind the bus and help him out, and that when Jimmy beats Russell, he extends a hand, wants to be his friend and make him understand why picking on people is wrong. My favorite comes from Scholarship Edition though, helping the lady at the carnival with dwarfism by smashing up the garden gnomes because she legitimately feels hurt and mocked by them. Now, that's not really what the gnomes _are_ doing, but Jimmy loves breaking stuff almost just as much as he loves to help people, so hey, if it makes her feel better, why not smash up some rich people's stuff?
I've gotta say, I'm really surprised this video doesn't have more views than it does. I clicked on it without even looking at the channel or the view count and thought it was published from an already massive video-essay style creator... holy shite man. Well done bro, you've earned a new sub. I expect your channel will blow up big time if you continue this level of quality. 👑
Thank you very much for the sub and the support! Just trying my best with every video I make and seeing stuff like this really makes my day so thank you :))
From a game presented as "Bully your way to the top to gain absolute power over the school", it's baffling how easy it is to imagine Jimmy as a good social worker later in his life. He is such a good showcase that a violent environment can make a violent person but not necessarily a terrible one. He doesn't respect anyone simply because it is demanded of him due to titles or ages but everyone can earn it with their actions/attitude regardless of their status in life. It's obvious that he would respect his mom if she was a good mother instead of shouting "I am your mother and I demand your respect!" His entire school story is about either punching upward or at worst on an even playing field, never down. Sure we get the typical disconnect between the story and the freeplay actions present in every Rockstar games, but even there it is so much softer than in GTA or RDR As far as I can remember, you can't actually gain anything from freeplay violence. Every item(bike, skateboard, scooter, etc) will eventually be taken back and you can't get any money or respect outside of missions. Everything Jimmy gains is with what people give him or pay him for and you can't actually make yourself rich by stealing from random people. I would love a sequel with either a college aged or even a daddyfied Jimmy Hopkins that stayed true to himself : a good hearted asshole that wants to take down the system of abuse. If Rockstar ain't gonne do it, could some talented indie devs to continue the story of Jonny Hipkins instead?
Couldn’t agree more on that point. Did you manage to collect all the collectibles? I never managed to do all of them but I heard you unlock something if you do.
That gave me psychological insight into the bullying I have experienced in school. Some people dismiss entertainment as entertainment but entertainment holds a mirror into ourselves, our society and culture There is depth to them beyond entertainment It's called pop culture for a reason.
First of all, thank you for commenting and gifting the first super thanks of the channel, I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and being so generous towards the channel. Secondly, I am sorry that you experienced bullying during your school life. I'm sure it wasn't easy but I hope you are doing much better now :). I also think your point about entertainment hits the nail right on its head. Usually, we analyse films, literature and art as a way to understand ourselves better. Still, I think we have neglected an aspect of entertainment that combines all those areas into one, gaming. It sounds weird at first but I truly believe there is so much we can learn through gaming even if it's not as obvious as a textbook about a certain topic. Plus it's fun and very interactive :)
I always saw the name as “(Fight against the) Bully”, as people have said multiple times in the comments, Gary fits the title much more. Jimmy is just trying to bring peace to the cliques while dealing with everything Gary causes to him and others around him. Hell, they even cut out the idea of characters dropping cash, as to not reward the player for randomly beating people up. Jimmy gets paid in money for helping nerds take a piss or delivering newspapers, Gary gets paid in power by manipulating others.
One thing that gets me about this game and might help paint jimmy as a victim.. is that there's 3 different times atleast where you could argue that someone could have killed Jimmy.. Jimmy is pretty mean but he never tried to kill anyone
Great video man! Obtaining supporting knowledge from real life and using it to identify something in a game is always a great video idea. And you executed it perfectly.
Джимми Хопкинс. Очень, очень хороший мальчик. Вежлив, правдив, скромен, добр. Слушает маму, каждое утро делает зарядку. Характер очень мягкий. Не женат.
I just finished this game for the first time (I played it as a kid but mostly just messed around in it, this was my first time engaging with the actual plot) and i think Jimmy is my favourite Rockstar protagonist after Arthur Morgan. He reminds me a few kids I was friends with, rough around the edges but with a strong sense of justice. I also have a strong sense of justice (apparently that comes with ADHD) and I also had kids that hung around me for protection even though I was bullied myself. I found school as a whole to be a strange dog-eat-dog type world that few people come out of squeaky clean, which is enabled by the culture in school and how children in general are treated like they have no agency of their own. I was always told how easy we have it and how adulthood and work are so much harder, but like at least as an adult I can choose to change my environment to an extent. like I can look for another job, i can look for an apartment in another city, i can go out when I want or stay in my room if I want, hell I can move countries if I want. Kids, especially kids like Jimmy are treated like toys or accessories that can just be dropped or shunted around schools like cattle at the convenience of adults and are at the mercy of their caregivers and teachers not being huge pieces of shit, then we wonder why they act out. I dont blame them lol, it makes me wish I'd acted out more if anything, tho i had my moments. One of the most liberating things as an adult is realising you were justified in your anger as a teen and I'm baffled that people remember childhood as an idyllic time tbh. Anyway, I think Jimmy is more like Arthur than any of the GTA protagonists, rough past but ultimately wants to do help and do good. He even has a brown jacket. It tracks that the respect system in this game was like an early prototype for RDR's honour system.
Thank you for leaving such a detailed comment I really enjoyed reading it. I completely agree with the fact that when you deep the school environment you wonder how most of make it out somewhat normal. I mean it's basically impossible to create an environment where ones agency is maximised whilst also protecting the child from harm. But for sure a lot more can be done to re direct kids from going down a path of becoming a bully.
Of the small clips I saw of 'Bully' (I never had a console to play the game), I remember liking Jimmy a lot because he seemed to be someone who wasn't like me -- he didn't outright knock people out, but he was ready to scrap if he ever felt pushed around. Of course that's not great, but I admired that for some reason
Here’s what I think. Jimmy was originally a bully in his previous schools however Bullworth was the first school where he got bullied so he became the bully of the bullies.
@@unrealmagic6519I disagree. A lot of left-leaning people love Class of 09, which satirizes the American school system much like Bully does, with their own tropes. Bully 2, if done right, would be universally loved.
I'm so glad you're human who is actually passionate about his job so many channels I found out were actually AI generated, but you are legitimately underrated and passionate and I thank you for your content as it is genuinely valuable information on psychology. I wish you success in the world
Hey I’m just happy to hear that you are back and enjoying vids! Thank you for the support!! Currently trying to stay consistent with things so more vids incoming :))
He doesn’t beat people up to be a bully, in fact he doesn’t like bullying and saves the nerds from it allot and he actually thinks he’s helping the school from the bullying problem. One of his first lines is literally about how the school is full of bullies
Jimmy is a product of his environment. He doesn't go looking for fights, most of the time he's just there existing. It's other people who have a problem with him, looking for confrontation. He just tells them hey, if you mess with me, I'm gonna kick your shit in. And he does.
I never thought Jimmy Hopkins was a bully, I always thought he was going through a rough time in his life, he is trying to become a better person even he is always angry
Awesome vid! And yeah. Jimmy seems to be more of a bully of bullies than anything else. Quite similar to my mom actually. Similarish issues at home, been taught that aggression is needed sometimes, and would use that aggression to tune other people's behavior to be less aggressive. Very similar in that most of the aggression is cause by other people being aggressive to her friends. The game also encourages you to attend classes and be a good student and discourages non-goal oriented / reactive violence to my understanding. Honestly kinda sad that rockstar isnt doing more with the IP.
i love this game, and its story. it really captured the american high school bullying really well. if only rockstar had more time, we could've gotten an even better and less rushed storyline. it warms my heart to see someone do a story analysis of bully, because it's pretty much forgotten these days, and not many dive deep into the lore. regardless, this was a great analysis and the editing and humor was on point too
Technically it's up to the player if you are a true bully or not. You can go after students who do nothing to bother you and attack them verbally and physically, but you can also simply choose not to. And I think that works perfectly. You have to go out of your way to activly bully other kids, inside the missions it's usually very defensive. You get rewarded to help people and "bring peace" between the cliques, but if you bully someone you only get in trouble and depending on how well you fight less health.
Jimmy Hopkins is a sigma male. He normally doesn't start problems with people, they start with him. He keeps a small circle of people close and he's loyal to that small group. He's not afraid of the alpha dog and he doesn't want to be the alpha dog. The alpha dog doesn't intimidate Jimmy and also, Jimmy is able go hand to hand with the alpha dog. Jimmy uses different methods to improve his situations to make his life easier and is unconventional. People like Jimmy without him trying to get him to like him. Jimmy is just purely the 1 and only sigma male in Bully.
In Bully 2 it should show Jimmy’s parents getting arrested for child abandonment and child neglect and child abuse. Just a thought, explains why he is the way he is.
Jimmy is a bully in the same fashion Niko is a criminal. A more lawful version of such Also, the irony here is that the actual gang of bullies were the only gang in the game who stayed loyal to Jimmy.
It does show the brutal cycle of bullying there's like a hierarchy the problem with that is eventually you hit the bottom and those guys it is such a bummer and I hope they make it out of school and survive cuz it must be hell for them
I think that's why he worked so well in the game. He had to prove his toughness since he wasn't intimidating off the bat. He was a wildcard in the school because he didn't care about the pressure of trying to fit in somewhere.
For as much as it was to apease the PEGI system, i think 'Canis Canem Edit' is a better title for the game than 'Bully'. Jimmy isn't a bully. He's the new kid trying to navigate the 'dog eat dog' world of Bullworth Academy.
I was going to say that I came out of the video as a bully but I seem to more suit the bully-victim , also I haven't watched such a good video since a long long time and I just subscribed for this reason
Jimmy had all Factions Trait within him at Birth but he never knew it. Study, Sport, Boxing, City (In love with City Girlfriend) but he never be Bully at all in canon.
I never saw Jimmy as a bully. I saw him more as an antihero more than anything. Yeah, I know he isn’t a role model or anything but you gotta give the guy some credit sticking up for kids that can’t do it themselves.
I find myself relating to Jimmie a lot especially as a kid. I always stood up for myself as a kid when someone tried to bully me. I'd make sure I made them regret doing so. But then other kids thought my reaction was funny so they'd do it too and the same thing would happen. Not to mention I beat tfo kids for messing with less fortunate or disabled kids. That earned me a best friend, a bad rep with almost all the other kids so not many wanted to be my friend bc id be at them up for merely "disagreeing" is what they said 🙄 but the teachers had a love hate relationship with me, bc I didn't let them try and come at me crazy either. Like... Not letting me go to the bathroom when I was on my period... It made my childhood difficult and even made me aggressive to everyone one even if I was being loving... Like Jimmie. After a while I didn't know how to turn the aggression off. I'm only now learning how to soften up and be tender... And I'm 28 🥺 this shit is hard
Very sorry that you had to go through that stuff, it must of really been a struggle. Schools are such complex environments filled with tons of people trying to figure themselves out. But unfortunately some people do that in unkind ways that end up really hurting people on the way. So once again I'm sorry that you had to go through with that but I hope now your in a better place. :)
No, Jimmy is the epitome of the title. He's the Bully Bullier. He kicks them in the teeth so no-one else has to. All while helping keep the other cliques out of harms way. He just wants to get through school. 😂
I always felt like Canis Canem Edit was a better name than Bully. Jimmy isn't a bully or a victim in totality; he's a generally fairly average chap, but the world itself is dog eat dog and he's willing to do what needs to be done to not get eaten.
Just wanna say, thank you for saying reactive, and not reactionary. I know it's not a huge thing, but when people say reactionary when they mean reactive it really gets under my skin. They are not synonyms at all lol
Subscribe so that Jimmy doesn't have to put you in the bin 🚮

@@thalissevero7627Jimmy was in a situation where everyone from the top down was an asshole and a wack job in some way, shape, or form. Pete might be nicer but the dudes to much of a doormat to ever really stand on his own. Jimmy can be a chill dude as we see but he can also step up and start swinging when it’s needed.
use bullying to end bullying
I always thought that the titular bully was always actually Gary, who manipulates Jimmy into almost becoming one, too.
Thankfully Jimmy realised before it was too late…
gary
And Gary is a sociopath, as Pete Kowalski told Jimmy.
@@bruhdon4748wannabe victim bs.
Not at all.
@@bruhdon4748This exactly how I saw it
The thing that I like about Jimmy is that he doesn't fight bullies and cliques for his own amusement, but rather to prove them wrong and show them the error of their ways, sure there are moments where he steps out of line like declare himself as king of the school and pull parks like spray on top of the building but characters like Gary and the leaders of the other cliques were much worse.
he does become haughty as his influence in Bullworth grows, but i think it's because to him it's a gulp of air after drowning. i never saw Jimmy as a bully, he's more like a victim of bullying who chose fighting back as a survival tactics.
Do you reckon the narrative would be different if Pete wasn't a character in the game?
@@GamePsychYT Oh, Definitely! Pete was the moral compass for Jimmy, when he was de-throned and all the other cliques started hating him, Pete was the only one that stayed by his side. Without him i don't know what would have happened
@@GamePsychYTMost likely. You wouldn't get ANY context to Jimmy beyond the first 5 minutes.
@@EruveyConB
Don't forget it's Pete who helps Jimmy win the fight against Johnny as well! 😄
"So, here I am at probably the worst school in the country, whose alumni are nothing but arms dealers, serial killers, and corporate lawyers - real scum. And that old creep thinks he can tame me? We shall see, my friend. I only give people what they have coming to them."
This summarises exactly who Jimmy is and what he thinks of Bullworth. That's a misguided child who needs direction in his life.
it's exactly how everyone should be though. what direction does he need? he's right.
Champions of Norath is an awesome game! ❤
Quite an endearing story.
Cant say the same sadly.
All my Bullies (and i had ALOT) where as*holes. Even standing up against them didn't helped, they just came back in bigger numbers.
I once bullied someone because he was from a rival group (hood vs hood thing, very common where and when i grew up), we end up in a party together and became best friends, also when his og friends began to treat him like crap i stood beside him making the tough guy act to stop their shit

I never really saw Jimmy as a bully, rather as someone who doesn't put up with bullies.
Recycling bullies for a living
He was the equalizer. Someone who absolutely could bully mercilessly, but instead took that ability and harnessed it into stopping folk from doing that to folk who don't deserve it. As long as you arent an unnecessary asshole then you have nothing to sweat from Mr. Hopkins.

Rockstar really made a complex and insanely fun masterpiece
@@GamePsychYT Tell me about it.
I'm really sorry to hear that. That sounds like a really horrible time and I hope you've found yourself in a much better place now. :)
I always thought Jimmy was a bully before the game began and this was like a redemption arc

When I was really young, I didn't play Bully at all and was only able to watch gameplay videos of it (not because my parents didn't want me playing it or anything, it was just so rare to find a physical copy), so I spent years thinking it was a game where you played as a...bully
Glad I was proven wrong tbh, I'd hate playing as what-would-basically-be a younger Trevor Philips
When Jimmy said "it's bullying time" in the 2nd phase of the final boss, I knew nominating the game for a game of the year award is a must 😅
It would be criminal to not give this game the awards it deserves!
The game doesn't allow healthy or prosocial action. You have to bully your way forward. He's a bully even if he doesn't fit the model you mention of a lack of social skills. Given that, he's still a redeemable, sympathetic antihero.
I agree. You can't really play the game without beating up hundreds of people so Jimmy does a good job of still being a somewhat decent person
Jimmy is basically what I imagine Arthur as a 15 year old 🤣
That’s actually so true
I want a bully sequel so bad PLEASE ROCKSTAR!!!!!
Yes please!!
He only bullies if they attempt to bully him. Hell, at the start even the nerds attempt to punch down and Jimmy hits back.
Top 5 mistakes right there, for the nerds at least

It's obvious that he would respect his mom if she was a good mother instead of shouting "I am your mother and I demand your respect!"
His entire school story is about either punching upward or at worst on an even playing field, never down.

Would be very cool to see how he was in his previous schools but that is a very fair guess!

Jimmy is a product of his environment. He doesn't go looking for fights, most of the time he's just there existing. It's other people who have a problem with him, looking for confrontation. He just tells them hey, if you mess with me, I'm gonna kick your shit in. And he does.

Thank you for checking it out and I also really appreciate you for sharing your own experiences.
i love this game, and its story. it really captured the american high school bullying really well. if only rockstar had more time, we could've gotten an even better and less rushed storyline.
it warms my heart to see someone do a story analysis of bully, because it's pretty much forgotten these days, and not many dive deep into the lore. regardless, this was a great analysis and the editing and humor was on point too
Aww thank you I really appreciate your kind words :)
Side note, you unlocked a dormant memory of that creepy ass carnival!
Especially when you go into some of those tents 💀
I'm sorry but the jocks are just straight up 20-something adults😳 how are they still in highschool 💀

In Bully 2 it should show Jimmy’s parents getting arrested for child abandonment and child neglect and child abuse. Just a thought, explains why he is the way he is.
Yep, they defo seem like they aren't doing their part in their child's development.
Jimmy is a bully in the same fashion Niko is a criminal. A more lawful version of such
Also, the irony here is that the actual gang of bullies were the only gang in the game who stayed loyal to Jimmy.
It does show the brutal cycle of bullying there's like a hierarchy the problem with that is eventually you hit the bottom and those guys it is such a bummer and I hope they make it out of school and survive cuz it must be hell for them
It makes sense that Jimmy was bullied. He is short, does not fit in cleanly with any clique, and is not that good looking.
the odds were stacked against him in many departments, poor guy
I think that's why he worked so well in the game. He had to prove his toughness since he wasn't intimidating off the bat. He was a wildcard in the school because he didn't care about the pressure of trying to fit in somewhere.

If anything, he's an antihero character (kind of like CJ in GTA San Andreas) who bullies the bigger bullies, but not a saint either like Vic Vance.
Funny that you mention GTA, I really wanna do some vids on those characters in the nearish future
Love the spiffing brit at 3:50
I never saw Jimmy as a bully. I saw him more as an antihero more than anything. Yeah, I know he isn’t a role model or anything but you gotta give the guy some credit sticking up for kids that can’t do it themselves.
His moral compass might look a bit weird but it still points the right way
@ it sure does!
This is my all time favorite game
With the nostalgia it holds I'm gonna be on at least the same page with u on that one :)
Great video!
Thank you!!! :))
I had it for the wii and absolutely loved it, it was basically gta but without the M rating
I often thought it was Gary that was the titular bully with all his actions while Jimmy is more of a mercanary/outcast.
How has this game not gotten a remaster yet ?
I know, honestly way over due!
I used to be a "bully of bully"
Not quite like jimmy, but that's what i think is close to him
Either attack or defend, but you're forced to fight
He's a bad boy, but only becomes a bully if you want him to be one
I loved watching my older brother play this growing up, he’d always pull the most psychotic shit😭
Just a casual hit and run
No, Jimmy is the epitome of the title.
He's the Bully Bullier. He kicks them in the teeth so no-one else has to. All while helping keep the other cliques out of harms way.
He just wants to get through school. 😂
A lone wolf of sorts
No. I’ve always felt one of the key points of the game was that he was a great person despite his rough appearance and demeanor.
No problem at all my friend :)
Jimmy is a Bully in the same way Kiryu is a Yakuza
In 2 days this video will be a year old
Damm, that went so quickly
