The question assumes that there is an objective answer. There isn’t. There is not a creator that deemed objective meanings or purposes. Choose a meaning or purpose for yourself, or not. Change it if you wish. The question is invalid if you believe there to be an objective, authoritative answer. It isn’t a mystery.

Science and philosophy are different fields. Why would you judge science on its ability to answer a philosophical question?
Well that's easy. Philosophy precedes science. Philosophy is the source of the original question of 'why'. Science cannot exist unless preempted by abstract reasoning. Another point is even more obvious. Science can build a nuclear bomb, but it cannot explain why a nuclear bomb should be built in the first place. That would have been a good time to use a little critical philosophical thinking before delving into the physics of mass destruction. Science without philosophy may prove in the end to be the death of us all.
Why wouldn’t you? Who made those rules? Philosophy is a science of metaphysics and abstractions. What are you talking about?

@@albertfralinger2711 A science research Master degree students is also referred as MPhil, short for Master in Philosophy. This is because through science, which is evidence-based study, you are trying to answer philosophical questions.
@@sodium281 a master of science is MSc, an MPhil is a postgraduate qualification in between masters and a PhD that concentrates on independent research projects, it has nothing to do with philosophy as as study area, it's just a name, it can be awarded in any area, language, maths, drama etc.

100 years ago we had more unanswered questions and they were answered using science. No need for God to explain it we know why. 100 years from now many of our questions will be answered. Not because of God but because we used the scientific process to increase our understanding to point that there is nothing magical about it.

It's a very bad analogy, science can explain why the woman made the cake. It's simply... humans love sweet or tasty things. It as bad as my aunts analogy of the rain, it rains because it's god tears because we are sinning. Misleading & paint a phenomenon as evil to make your feel things. It relies on feelings to arrive to the wrong conclusion, although that's not the intention of the analogy when supposedly trying to "prove" god.
There is NO god of ANY holy book. ALL gods are strictly human manufactured fiction. When a bad day arrives the question to be asked is what for and not why. The fact that we are here is a reality that demands an explanation, precisely about what for am I here. I have a brain therefore there is no excuse to not look for an answer about the purpose of my existence being conscious that there are intelligent laws all around me, that can be formulated as an equation. Math, music and love are all around me, and I mus accept that these outside realities existed before me. Do a favor to yourself and instead of complaining simply embrace all the good things.

Atheism doesn't give ground for trusting rationality. It is the product of rationality. Science doesn't claim to explain everything. That's an apologist's "straw man." Science is limited and science accepts its limitations. But it keeps humbly trying to answer deeper questions. Religion criticizes science because supposedly science cannot answer questions like "why are we here." Well, I have news for the religious types: Religion can't either. Saying the universe is God's will and will be revealed is an empty statement. We can see aunt Matilda and speak to her and scientifically determine, by asking her all sorts of questions and verifying her answers, why she made the cake. That is a false parallel. We can't do what we did with aunt Matilda, with God. We have to posit his existence, use circular thinking to "prove" his existence and take it on faith that he exists. The religious argument runs as follows: The universe has to have been designed by a superior intelligence because such complexity could not have created itself. The designer can be no other than God. Clearly then, God created the universe... Rational people cannot take such an argument seriously.

If your favorite deity is actually objectively real, part of objective reality, the reality that we all share, it should be a trivial task to present your deity for examination, testing, and questioning to see if it can live up to your claims for it.

Sorry guys, but all top-down origin scenarios (gods or the like first) necessarily include the infinite regression issue, something that cannot be defined away. This means that no deity can sit at the origin of objective reality. If you reject the possibility of an infinite regression in objective reality then you inherently reject any and all top-down origin scenarios. If you accept that infinite regressions can happen in objective reality then you must inherently accept that your preferred deity can't sit at the origin because the regression cannot be stopped. There can't be a definite origin to a top-down scenario, only a nebulous 'and many things came before' whatever you might be proposing. To insist that any specific deity sits at the origin of objective reality is both irrational and illogical.
Bottom-up origin scenarios (quantum fields or something similar first) can work because quantum theory, supported by innumerable objective empirical experiments, shows that there are hard limits to how small and simple things can be.
All of our available verified objective empirical evidence points exclusively and unambiguously to an objective reality that is built from the bottom up, from the quantum fields. Everything that can be shown to objectively exist can also be shown to be made of the quantum fields and nothing more.

My "god" is the human imagination. My "god" created your God. Believing in a god or gods is a self-reflection. You are focusing on something in your imagination. Apparently that creates a "spiritual experience" for some people. But, it doesn't make your god real just because you feel it and believe it and have FAITH in it. It is just real to you. Quit trying to force it on the rest of us. Just because science doesn't explain everything doesn't mean we should turn to ancient gods and myths for answers. If you need meaning and purpose in your life, I don't care where you find it. Just don't try to convince me to believe what you believe. I will listen to you until you start telling me I will go to hell for eternal torment if I don't accept what you say as truth. That is manipulation and it is disgusting. We don't know why we are here or why anything exists. It is all a profound mystery. Just accept reality. A lot of peope do. You religious people have to work really hard just to convince yourselves of what you say you "believe" in. You create communities to reinforce your beliefs. But you still can't agree on everything. Look at all of the religions and denominations and movements and splinter groups around the world and throughout history. Why can't you guys get the story straight? Because what's in your imagination is different from what's in everyone else's imagination.

Faith is blind, you believe in claims because they make you feel good and better for some reason. For you, have the need to have over lord watching over you and judge you. You need that fear to be good, that if you do something bad you will be punished by god even if no person can see your bad deed. That's not healthy way to live, not at all.

I just looked up Sir Peter Brian Medawar and not only was he not a christian but he in fact he found the Biblical stories unethical and was "shocked by the way in which [Biblical] characters deceived and defrauded each other." He even asked his wife "to make sure that such a book did not fall into the hands of [their] children." So either this doofus took something he sad WAY out of context or (and I personally favor this on) he flat out lied. Every single argument John and, in fact, every apologist uses is based on and around logical fallacies, it's all they have.

Atheism is simply the claim that God, Gods or gods do not exist. So of course atheism per se gives "you no ground for trusting the rationality you need to do science". To get to that grounding, atheists appeal to other ideas.
Likewise, theism is simply the claim that God, Gods or gods do exist. So likewise theism per se gives "you no ground for trusting the rationality you need to do science". For example, what if the God or god changes its mind all the time and so undermines any concept of reality a theist does have? To get a grounding, theists have to appeal to other ideas that go beyond the assertion that Gods or gods exist.
So why on earth do Cameron and Lennox expect atheism to do something which theism itself cannot do?
And no, science cannot explain everything. If it could, then scientists would no longer need to do research.
When apologists say the kind of things Lenox says, then they show why apologetics is largely bankrupt of sensible thinking and is largely irrelevant to the non Christian world.

Science can explain to a degree, why I exist. For example, we have good evidence that the amount of entropy in the universe increases with time. This is a scientific statement. We know that human beings generate entropy simply by being alive. That too is a scientific concept. Humans generate even more entropy when they do additional things. In 1977 Ilya Prigogine won the Nobel Prize for chemistry and his theory about dissipative structures. He wrote a book titled "Order out of Chaos" in which he explains that living organisms exist in a state of being far from equilibrium with their surroundings. In order to maintain this state they have to suck in resources from their surroundings and do work, by recycling chemicals and by making new chemicals. In doing so, they generate more entropy which gets added to the overall universal entropy.
So perhaps something always existed. It "burped" about 14 billion years ago and space/time expansion began. To return the universe to its pre-burp state, dissipative structures such as stars, rivers, decaying atoms, clouds, and living organisms formed. We humans are nothing more than sophisticated entropy generators. That is why we exist. There may be nothing more to it.
It's an idea at least which appeals to many scientific concepts.
Of course, that's unsatisfactory for many people. But it is a possibility. Many who are unhappy with it appeal to entities like themselves. Mostly these entities are invisible and beyond our ken, but humans who believe they exist assign to them all kinds of attributes which allow those entities (we often call them gods or God) to create existence and along with it, living organisms.
That's another idea.
The funny thing is, many theists like Lenox and Cameron, don't seem to understand that these entities no more explain why we exist nor how we exist. Not in the sense they expect science to explain, should science have an explanation.
So there is a degree of hypocrisy going on here.
