The ‘unacceptable’ resignation of Rosie Duffield | LBC Analysis

- Rosie Duffield MP has quit Labour - and launched an attack upon Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.
Ms Duffield, 53, is the fastest MP to leave a party after a general election in modern history.
In her resignation letter, the now-Independent MP for Canterbury, wrote to the Prime Minister: "I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party.”
The row over declarations by MPs and senior ministers overshadowed the Labour conference last week, with criticism aimed at both the PM and his ministers for accepting luxury gifts from wealthy donors while announcing cuts to the winter fuel allowance.
Matthew Wright is joined by The Times’ Aubery Alegretti, and they discuss the possibility of whether rules should be brought in to prevent politicians from resigning the party whip yet remaining an MP without a by-election.
Former Labour advisor Matthew Torbitt criticizes her for being more absent than other MPs in parliament, and calls out her double standard as she has accepted freebies in the past as well.
Matthew also hears from caller Sandy, who supports her resignation saying the ‘rules need changing’ over how MPs are allowed to accept gifts.

Matthew, your response sums up what is wrong with Labour. A party which does not listen and will not tolerate the views over others.
I thought he had to resign from his C5 programme for similar views.
I think the word you're failing to find is morals, you are obviously incapable to report honestly. Well done to the young lady 👏

Tories collapsed, Labour won by default
In any contest if your opponent doesn't show up then you are the winner, it's simple OK ?
@@thomasmoore1499 no one disputes that Labour won. This is about how they won. Starmer did not magically make Labour surge to victory. In fact the number of votes for his Labour was less than for Corbyn. Characterising him as being a better leader because he got fewer votes is a bit misleading. The reason he got more seats is because the Tory vote collapsed, not because people voted for him
@@lonyo5377 But that's basically it - Starmer didnt drive people to the tories like Corbyn. At least part of politics is letting your enemy keep making mistakes. So the reality is, the numbers really dont matter, it's all about seats with FPTP.
@@lonyo5377 Well clearly people did vote for him, but not by a big enough margin in your book, well hard luck. He won big, very big, which nobody thought possible at the time including Duffield, I would assume. So waited 3 months to throw her toys out of the pram and cause a fuss, Let's see how far she gets as an independent voice amongst 400+ Labour members. Yes, you get to the heart of the point missed in this interview - has she left Labour, or did Labour leave her?
Voting for the Refom Party at every single opportunity should now be viewed as an 'absolute Duty' at this stage of the game.
Wright says what a swiz that she stood as a Labour candidate and then left to become an independent. No, the real swiz is Labour lying to all those pensioners who voted for them about the security of their winter fuel allowance and then immediately removing that allowance once elected. These idiot presenters need to remember she was not elected to represent the Labour Party. She was elected to represent her constituents. If she believes Labour isn’t supporting the interests of her constituents, it is her *responsibility* to make a change.
I say: Brava for having integrity.
Something lacking in Labour and apparently at the LBC.
At the same time she will have relied on the party to support her through the election and only now finds her conscience and voice. She must have known for months were she stood in relationship to the leadership. If she feels so upset why doesn't she stand again as an independent and face a by-election.
Yes I was surprised that Wright didn't realise that?

They have another 5 years to put up with him though - that's called democracy.
Is this man not understanding whats going on in our country with this ridiculous government and what going to happen to us people
Matthew you’re getting OUTRAGED at the wrong person.
If this is how Duffield thinks and feels, respect her decision which I’m sure has not been taken rashly.
But it isn't how she thinks and feels. She has resigned over the trans debate but doesn't have the spine to say so. She says no MP should take gifts because they are so well paid, yet she takes a freebie to attend a golf social and spends time earning money from writing articles or appearing on GB news. Why isn't she focused on her constituents rather than spending her time earning extra money with non-constituency tasks if 90 grand is enough?
Why didn't she vote against the winter fuel allowance changes she is so upset about now? Because she would have lost the whip and so lost any chance of this sort of grandstanding resignation, which is clearly done to increaase her profile, and boost her GP news income.
Why not wait for just 2 weeks for Labour's first budget in 15 years at which the winter fuel allowance may be dealt with and the 2 child benefit cap be removed. Because a positive Labour budget would steal her thunder and remove any chance a look-at-me-resignation.
Why stand under a manifesto that did not pledge to remove the 2 child benefit cap and instead stand as an independent and commit to ending the 2 child benefit cap? Because without the Labour machinery she would not have been re-elected to her 90 grand a year job, which is essential to maintain her profile in the media.
Respect? She has Trojan-horsed her way back into Parliament to spend just 10 weeks as a Labour MP and will spend 250 weeks as an independent. And she barely sets foot in Parliament. During these 250 weeks she will pocket £450,000 of your tax money over 5 years for conning the people of Canterbury - for denying her voters the long-awaited Labour representation they voted for. You'll notice she has not mentioned triggering a by-election? Because she'd be saying farewell to almost half a million quid. Not the sort of self-serving MP I can respect. Can you?
You really believe that after 14 years in opposition, part if which she spent in the shadow cabinet, this Canterbu8ry MP had no idea that Labour MPs accepted free gifts? If this is true, then she was the only person she knew of who accepted gifts as he went to the golf event gratis. So she should have resigned over her own "unnacceptale" "hypoctrical" personal behaviur back then. With all due respect to you, and 99% of people commenting, you have been played like a violin. By large swathes of the media. And by Duffield herself.
Duffield resigned because there are more lucrative grifts to supplement her income. She’s obviously a hypocrite as she accepts gifts too. And if she’s anti trans then she belongs out of Labour. You don’t have to be an ally, but I think politicians need to have the sense to stay out of divisive rhetoric or stances. They’re human beings, let them be happy.
Finally an MP with a moral backbone.

She’s speaking for all of us who have been betrayed by the Labour Party. We need more people who have personal integrity - I commend her
Wow if a second principled labour mp also left labour, LBC would go into cardio arrest, BUT defending and condoning labour against anything the tories did is even worse... So two wrongs make it right - it's all foolish, pathetic and dangerous.
Mathew, i actually applaud Rosie, as she said so many promises were made such as 'we wont tax pensioners' then thats one of the first thing labour does! Starmer has lied and cheated and ONLY got in by default NOT a landslide. If you Mathew cannot see what the rest of us see about labour and especially starmer then your morals are wrong! Starmer BROKE the rules several times, he didnt make clear that the money given for clothing was for his wife too, he BROKE rules by putting his home address on his paperwork when he was actually residing miles away in Ali's penhouse suite with his son ( to study) which starmer has inadvertently confessed to, this goes AGAINST parliamentary rules, so if you 'know' about rules youd 'know' starmer broke them!. You are dragging LBC to the lowest depths by not doing correct research and making starmer look whiter that white while damning Rosie for having the guts to walk away from the dreadful hypocrisy that labour has shown so far. Bless you, it seems you just cant help it.
Mathew you are simply just as bad as your pal James o brien, the fact you claim Labour won on their best results ever is hardly a compliment as the majority of the British public didn’t vote! 🤣🤣. How can you even defend him
Ive always thought you were a decent bloke Mathew, fairly level headed and used to have valid points... Not any more. You have fallen far Mathew, attacking the ONLY Labour MP with integrity and honesty. SHAME ON YOU
Well Done Rosie. At least you have morals.
Rosie Duffield the only Labour MP with values and morals
Au contrarie, Matthew Wright. Rosie Duffield is a woman of strong principles, which are badly needed in UK politics. There are numerous and very valid reasons for her to resignation. You could argue that her timing was bad - though this argument fails to take into account Starmer's actions to which she has felt compelled to react.
Her constituents voted for HER, and not for Keir Starmer per se. She is STILL their Parliamentary representative until the next General Election, unless more than 10% of her constituents force a by-election by having a vote of No Confidence in her.
One of the main reasons she cites for resigning is that whenever she tried to talk to the Labour leadership she was ignored.
Therefore she was - through no fault of her own - UNABLE to represeent her constituents.
The fact is that Starmer is a very controlling person. Over 100 Parliamentary Labour Candidates were deselected prior to the July 4th General Election, to be replaced by Starmer's choice of candidates, parachuted in from outside these constituencies. Thus the wishes of local CLP members was ignored and overriden.
And the highly effective and very popular former Mayor of North Tyneside, Jamie Driscoll was similarly deselected - for no valid reason.
This is unprecedented for ANY leader of ANY UK political party since democacy began. It is highhly undemocratic and indicates rule from the top down, giving ZERO chance for Labour rank and file members to elect their own representatives who know the areas and who actually COME from that canstituency.
Her constituents voted for her - under the Labour banner and using Labour money and support. Call a by election now and justify her position.
He didn't DECLARE them til he was forced to!! Two thirds of this country did not vote for them! WELL DONE ROSIE 👏👏. Hopefully, more will do the same. Starmer is a disgrace!
FPTP - numbers dont matter. If this is your argument, can we have a recount of Brexit too? Most people didnt vote to leave the EU.
@@mustrumridcully3853 52% voted to leave... Leaving 48% remain 🤔
LBC = Labour Broadcasting Corporation
Unacceptable resignation ! Bit pompous of you to choose that title, two tier kier did not steer the labour party to victory, look at the voting records for the turn out at the general election. The inference that she used labour to get into parliament so she could sit as an independant, is SPURIOUS & SLANDEROUS.
Voting numbers dont matter with FPTP. Duffield stood as Labour. If she is so principled, she can now stand as an independent and call a by election.
Matthew Wright Labour were not elected because the electorate wanted them in power but that they wanted the Tories out.
