Hello Everyone! 😃We hope you're staying safe and healthy. This video was filmed before the lockdown. We're doing our best to work on our back log promise! 🤞For anyone new to the channel - stay tuned - we’ll be putting out more quarantine videos from the Philippines ASAP! ✌️- Anna & Trevor
The eggplant salad is made this way: eggplants are grilled till you can take the skin off. Then minced/ blended with salt, onion and oil. Some add mayonnaise as well, but that is optional. In the floating island dish, the merengue has no sugar and it is not baked, it is gently boiled. The custard in the video is much thicker than the one mum makes at home.
About what you said at the end on people not looking very friendly and being all smiles, let me explain a bit. Romanians are pretty true to their feelings, that means not displaying a fake smile if there is no reason to it. They may also seem less smiley on the streets as life is not so easy there for many . But you can be sure that it doesn't take much to open their heart and see how friendly and welcoming they can be. I prefer it that way instead of being met with smiles and stubbed in the back as it often happens in the western world😉
That eggplant is the most addictive thing you can eat, and one of my favourite snacks. It sound so simple, but after you taste it, you just want to keep eating it. I think there are few who dislike it. :))
Waiting for a waiter for ten minutes is not that unusual in nearly all parts of Europe. I'm afraid it's something Americans kind of have to get used to. I'm sure you've travelled enough to know more about it than me. I live in the UK and the service is OK compared to some countries but nothing like what you get in the USA. I actually find the service in the USA a bit too far the other way. They won't leave you alone and sometimes bring you the bill before you've asked for it, which seems like a polite way of saying 'get lost now'. Great video by the way. I adore Romania.

So cool you went to Romania. Being married to a Romanian and having visited the country many times, it’s truly a must see place. The papanasi ( pronounced papa nash) is also one of my favorites!!

Example : 1) Bread + Pork cracklings + salt +red onions + ...palinca ! and the fatty taste is gone 2) Bread+ mici (smalls)+ mustard+...a draft beer (is a must!) Loved this! I also ate at Roata last march and had the exact same meal. Really enjoyed the Varza a la Cluj and also endulged in the Floating Islands Dessert! Apparently that dessert has Parisian influences. I love how other places are inspired by Paris. Hope all is well in the PH!
Eggplant salad is my favourite! I can eat it everyday! You can make it at home as well. You re supposed to grill it on a hot tin, make sure it is well roasted inside, then let it cool, peel it, then let the jiuces come out, when it is dry you chop it finely and mix it it with a little salt, olive oil untill it becomes whiteish...and add chopped onions. You can also add a litlle mayo and put it on bread and fresh tomatoes on top! We also have a kind of unique salad, I haven t seen it anywhere else in the world, it is called fish eggs salad. Also eaten with onions, olives on a piece of bread or toast. Bon appetite!
You guys make me hungry, I was born in Cluj. You have to know that everything is eaten with bread, or at least that is what Romanian people do. The desert is called “Lapte de pasare” which can be translated like “Bird Milk”, we a used to ask my mom how she milked the bird when we were kids. It’s funny to see your comments on something so dear to us. My husband was American and he loved this food, he used to tell me that is nothing sweeter than to see me cooking Romanian food in Texas. Truly enjoyed your video
Looked like the ultimate comfort food, especially when you were feeling under the weather. You said you wanted warmer weather at the end, little did you know just how much you would have when you said that!
The first restaurant you went to (Casa Tarancutei = The house of the little peasant girl/woman) is a street food thing, like McDonald's. You buy your food at the counter and sit down or leave. They don't serve the tables. They would have asked you if you needed something but they were probably shy. I don't think they speak English there so the more reason to be shy. The food there is quite good. Not the most amazing but on the good side.
I love Romanian food 🇷🇴 never tried the cluj pac . I love the Papanasi , mamaliga and sour soup. Hope you are feeling better and loved this video. All Romanian desserts are well balanced it seems the apple pie you are having interesting food.
Hey guys did you know that the Papanaş had fresh cheese bits in it ?? I bet you didn't but that is a must in every papanaş that is why it gets the signature texture and that is why is not like a donut , love your videos!!! Keep up !
The "Lapte de Pasare" (Floating Islands Dessert) translated word by word from romanian means "Bird Milk" :) I really enjoyed your videos and I am happy you liked our food.

Hope that you do arrive here when it's coronaVirus free to enjoy our beautiful city of Montreal to the fullest, I'll be happy to meet you both. Until then enjoy your journey in peace 😘😘
You're right when you said that they must've cooked it for a long time. In Romania, if you want to cook something traditional or a little elaborate , it takes a heck of a lot of time and patience. That sort of Cluj-Napoca cabbage is some sort of what we call "varză călită" I think you can translate it to roasted cabbage, usually made with fried/roasted meat or bacon. That one is quite fancily arranged, I may say.
Nice video guys! You should try the food in Bucovina, its a blessing! The ‘papanasi’ are the speciality of that area and also they are a different type of doughnuts because they are made out of mainly cottage cheese. In my opinion the best ones are with blackcurrant jam❤️, also you should try ‘Ciorba radauteana ‘ and ‘ salata Boeuf ‘ . Hands up for the eggplant salad, i’d eat it day and night, my fav food ever!!!! Keep up with the videos , i can’t wait for the next one...👏🏻

( a tip, visit the town of SIGHISOARA because THAT’S the town where Dracula was born !! )
Eggplant salads you supose to eat on bread with fresh slices of tomato or Bell pepper. Micii with bread too. Cluj cabbage also with bread and sour cream. Did you try dumplings with plums inside, Floating islands is actually translate as bird(pasare) milk(lapte).
The meringues are fluffy because the are not baked, they are boiled in milk :) Also papanasi look like a doughnut but they actually contain 60% of cheese or more.
The pie you ate at the beginning, that's how pie -> placinta [plu-chin-tha] normally looks to us. But I never ate apple pie, it's kind of unusual just like nuttela pie, but each to their own. If you ever visit again Romania you should try placinta again but with potatoes, or ham & cheese or cheese and dill or (pickled) cabbage, with sour cream and maybe garlic sauce. You ate the eggplant salad correctly, or at least that's how me and the people I know eat it. Usually the eggplant salad has onion minced inside. Cluj Cabbage has pork minced meat, cabbage and sour cream. It's very close to stuffed cabbage ('sarmale'), some people including myself like to eat sarmale with sour cream. There are different ways to cook „papanasi”. When I was a child, my mother used to make them with plenty of cow cheese, eggs and without jam so the result was something less sweet, but very tasty and more healthy.
Hi Anna and Trevor how are you both? I’m sorry I haven’t been around I found out I’m pregnant with my second child, it’s a complete surprise and a blessing as I didn’t know I was pregnant until 27 weeks. I’m now 31 weeks pregnant and due with my boy in mid July lol. Long story as to why I didn’t know but I’m loving that this has happened. I’m sorry you’re both not feeling the best, wishing you a speedy recovery. The good looks delicious 😍
Papanasi is made with cottage cheese ,they are not doughnuts.A good translation would be cheese balls wrapped in the same stuff as the shnitzel.I miss my lovely birth place Cluj.Good job guys!
That pie you tried first has a standard dough to say so.They fill it after with cooked cabbage, cheese, meat,or something sweet.thats why it doesn t taste like cinamon and is not sweet..For the pie you have with apple we have our own, called apple cake and has cinamon insides. I agree with you,out of all our food I miss papanasi the most since I dont live in Romania atm.Im home now and I want papanasi so bad and everywhere i know they are good is closed due to this pandemic😪
Guys, as you noticed Romanian food is very very heavy, so that's why Romanians eat a lot of bread🍞🥖 with every dish😁. If you eat many of those fatty foods on their own without any bread like you seem to do, they will just feel too heavy even for a Romanian. 👌nice job you're doing, I've been to Canada and loved foods like poutine, savoury crèpes and I'd always go for a Canadian breakfast.
Well, there are 3 type of Papanasi, boiled ones, fried ones and baked ones. The fried ones are a little more difficult to make, you need to find the perfect balance between flour and cow fresh cheese. You need to put it in the fridge to rest...there are a lots of tips and tricks you have to do to prepare papanasi, if not papanasi will be like rubber. And you didn't tried dumpling with plums...or coliva (this is a cake that is made at the funerals or religious holidays, with barley, raisins, walnuts, biscuit and sugar)
Hello! If you translate lapte de pasare in english it means birds milk, not floating islands... Is one of best deserts, and you can eat this in Romania only around Cluj-Napoca. Nice video!
Hello, I liked your videos from Romania, this one is on my city and I was thinking to give you more information about what exactly you eaten. That cabbage is some dish traditional from Cluj Napoca and just there you can actually really eat and be good. Lots of people saying is something like that cabbage tools and they try to do it but is actually not supposed to taste the same so this is why you found it different. Is some similarity between but not the same, and is with pork meat.🐖 The desert you eat and you like is supposed to be how you eat in Cluj not like in Bucharest, and the best version is with blueberry jam and yes is soure cream, and the cow cheese is inside of the dough. That big rolls desert you eat in Brașov is actually a Hungarian desert and it didn't really look good, you should have another one in Cluj-Napoca, we make it better, I hope you like România 😁 and our food.
2:21 That’s not how we actually make apple pie. You ate a cheap version of it from a pastry aka baked products. Search ,,Romanian apple pie” to see how we do it. And for 1:45, the fact that you left after just 10 minutes is kinda rude because here if the restaurant is kinda crowded and the employees are few is hard to serve you right away. And you can always ask for a waiter/waitress if they don’t seem to see you. Please just be patient, understanding and respectful and you will have a great time ❤️ Hope you will return someday cuz we really have good food.
i think that is plum gem (majun) . You forget to tase palinca :) ( it more likely works with the traditional cooked meat and cheese and sausages) - i can't believe you missed maramures food.
Wow, you got there quick from the Philippines. I'll bet you're glad to be out of lockdown, but sad to leave that idyllic location. So you went straight home to Romania; always thought you guys were Welsh. Stay safe.

Guys, I'm just posting this comment again which I did in your vlog of April 14. If you are still in the country, that's a great decision especially in terms of finance $7K airfare that's insane! That amount will go a long way here in the Phils. If I may suggest, if you've decided to do vlogging as your career for the next while, you can have the Phils as your homebase just like a number of foreign vloggers and just travel around the country or within Asia. Don't hesitate to negotiate a good rate for renting a place where it's safe and accessible to everywhere, or, if you have already Filipino friends, ask for their assistance to help you find a good and affordable place to rent. You can easily gain a lot of subscribers from here and once the quarantine is lifted, arrange for meetups with your subscribers so they in turn can invite their friends and families to be your subscribers. Our country is very rich in culture and each province have a unique culture, special foods, etc. Connect with each province's Tourism Office so you get assisted for the right places to see and in turn you build your right network. Stay safe and enjoy our country. GOD BLESS!
Thanks Elma... we're still here in the PH and we don't think we're leaving here soon 😃As much as we love the Philippines we don't just want to be vloggers within this one country. We have a passion to see the whole world. We do absolutely adore this country though ... more PH vlogs soon! - Anna

You have to try the Rose's Jam sometimes 😁
The papanași dough is normally made with cheese in the composition.
You should have tried the pumpkin pie instead 😋 it's my favourite
You could order papanasi with nutella , if you visit again Romania to know
That pie you tried first has a standard dough to say so.They fill it after with cooked cabbage, cheese, meat,or something sweet.thats why it doesn t taste like cinamon and is not sweet..For the pie you have with apple we have our own, called apple cake and has cinamon insides.
Im actually roman umm and im happy at this youtuber because romania is da best B-) YEET
Im roman lol
Nice video!
The desert is " lapte de pasare"/bird milk
That big rolls desert you eat in Brașov is actually a Hungarian desert and it didn't really look good, you should have another one in Cluj-Napoca, we make it better, I hope you like România 😁 and our food.
what makes papanasi special is that inside, there`s cow cheese :)
Transilvanian food is soooooooooo tassstyyyyyyyy!!!!! I'll go and make some papanas(h)
Yum!
is romanian food lol ,you can find it anywhere in Romania.

You finally found Ardeal! 😂 ❤️
You need to go in Maramureș 💚
the floating islands dessert has romanian roots
even the name if you proper translate it, it means bird`s milk
Wish i could fly to romania, havent seen my wife in 9 months. :(
9:16 If you translate ,,Lapte de pasăre” word by word is ,,Bird milk” in English.
Wow that’s a lot of onions if I eat all that onions I’m going to have a heart burns 🤣😂😁😄 it’s looks delicious 😋 👍
Hope you enjoyed the video Pia! :) - Trevor
Its very tasty!!!
We cook a lot with onions...makes the food tasty...and that salad was made with red onions or water onions which are lighter in flavor...
Lovely! This must feel so long ago to you now! 😘
Honestly it feels like another lifetime 😆- Anna
i think that is plum gem (majun) . You forget to tase palinca :) ( it more likely works with the traditional cooked meat and cheese and sausages) - i can't believe you missed maramures food.
And now,i'm hungry🤪🤦♀️
WOOOHOOOO yas our food is good
Now i get hungry😀
Wow, you got there quick from the Philippines. I'll bet you're glad to be out of lockdown, but sad to leave that idyllic location. So you went straight home to Romania; always thought you guys were Welsh. Stay safe.
We're still here in the Philippines on lockdown. We're just trying to catch up on older videos. Romania is not home and we're not Welsh... we're from Canada - Anna
IF you haven't visit the Danube Delta, and eat some local food...you missed a lot. Basically each region of Romania have its own "punch"...
Next time! We never have enough time to do it all but we did go across the country to many locations - Trevor
The "Cluj cabbage" is actually called "varză ca la cluj"
Did you manage to eat all that food?
Cluj❤
cabbage a la cluj (Varza a la Cluj) it not cabbage roll (Sarmale), it is a different dish. I love ur video.
- Anna
Did you get an apple sponsorship?
There have been no macs arriving in our mail 😅- Anna
Why am I watching this? Why do I torture myself? I only have bread in the fridge😭
You have bread in the fridge? 👁️👄👁️
@@latex2433 la asta ma gândeam și eu 😂
who keeps bread in the fridge?
O gramada de lume tine painea in frigider...
Romanian Papanași or Greek Loukoumades
Not quite, the papanasi dough is made of cheese.
To me, the best food is in Moldova (the provence, not the Republic of Moldova). It's great, plenty and cheap.
OMG I JUST REALIZE THAT I SEED ME IN THE VIDEO
No way! What part? - Trevor
