A simple clipboard makes a good cutting board with a built in clip to hold the fish

I taught my nephew to give the fish a good smack over the head with a thumb sized stick, hes always killed them with the one shot. Now to the processing. Cut the tongue out under the jaw, leave it attached. Slit the belly, pinch the tongue and give it a jerk. Everything comes right out. The benefit other than it being stupid easy is now the lower jaw still intact, you can use it as a carry handle. That whackin stick before? Thread through the jaws and just tie them off with a bit of bank line. Two knots at each end of your stick and you've got a carry handle. He snuck off one day and caught a mess of trout and cleaned them like that. He told me some older fellas asked him where he learned that. Proud as he could says "my uncle taught me." Cant argue with results, he caught them, I cooked them. He liked when I bake meat, be it fish, chicken, rabbit, what have you. Tip to keep the meat moist if you bake, cook it half way then flip the meat and finish cooking. Half way cooked the juices are liberated and are seeping out, flip it and they seep back into the meat.

Lol, honestly, I am accustomed to expecting the "Oh, man" after the first bite. Its like a staple phrase for Dave tasting anything he cooks... Bite... "Oh, man"... talk about it... bite... "Oh, man"... thank the viewer... bite.. "Oh, man"... end video!! YOU MAKE ME CRAVE WILD MEAT EVERY TIME I WATCH A VIDEO OF YOURS!! *NOT FAIR*

A good "cutting board" I have used is just a wooden clipboard. I especially love it for fishing trips because the clip can be used to hold the fish tail down when scaling it.

I am a disabled veteran and spent time with SF at Bragg. There seems to be plenty of sympathetic people concerned with the animals well being. Well these are not pets. They are food. The truth is that, if all of mankind treated food like humans, we never would have lasted this long! I have Never heard a fish say OUCH!!!

Guy from PA checking in here. My largest was 9', and the state record is around 2 lbs. Green sunfish tend to overpopulate, and therefore are usually smaller because they get stunted. In a fishery with a healthy and large predatory fish population, I can easily see these fish getting larger than that. It all depends on the water. Also, I prefer my sunfish filleted. It removes most to all of the bones.

We used to catch a bucket full of these kinds of fish once a year for my neighbor and he would rototill them into the garden before he planted his seeds and his vegtables would just grow unbelievably well. My favorite is the freshwater perch.

  • @ThisFish888

Fish size is also related to the amount of food available, For a typical gamefish to grow to one pound requires that it consume close to 5 pounds food. So in a pond where there is abundant food fish will grow larger and faster than in a pond with less food.

a good tip if you accidentally swallow a bone and it gets stuck. keep a heel or slice of dry bread, no butter or nothing, chew a bite and swallow. it will wash the bone down. my grandfather taught me this. he was an east coast fishermen from Prince Edward Island for years and years.

Sir, with a comment like that you do not deserve to give Dave your opinion on his tactics. As a fisherman for the last 18 years of my life, I saw nothing wrong with what Dave did, actually found it more useful than the traditional method of cleaning and prepping a sunfish.

I thot I knew most everything about catching, cooking and eating fish. But my Filipina wife showed me a new way to prep and cook small fish. After cleaning, (she leaves the heads on) she splits them open butterfly style and salts them down. Then she lets the fish sit in the sun for an hour or so to "dry down." After that she frys them in hot oil really well and when they are done they are like little fish chips and can be eaten HEAD, BONES AND ALL.

In a survival situation, the use of that much oil in the pan is a waste unless you ate it too. You have more calories in that skillet in the form of oil than there was in the fish. I've always preferred to hit my fish on the head with a small stick, 1/2inch by 1foot is plenty, in order to dispatch the fish. That way I can scale it with the head on while holding it in my hand. A spoon is excellent for descaling a fish. Then, I eviscerate it. But there is more than one way to clean a fish.

One of my favorite things about visiting my aunts lake in Massachusetts is catching those off her dock. They're all good size and tons. Caught my first large mouth bass and pickerel fish there. Starting to get into sea fishing. In my area of California theres quite a bit of Mercury in our reservoirs unfortunately.

FWIW, when I used to catch croakers and such on the coast of NC, I'd tak'em back to the truck and fry'em up gutted but with the scales still on. The scales popped up like popcorn and made for a decently crunchy "batter". Fine eating. Outta the water, into the gullet in ~30mins. Livin large.
Thanks for the vid, Mr David. d;^)

Dave, just a thought, but an old man in Florida taught me to just use a fork to scale fish. It works great and if done in the water, or under running water it is so quick. Works great if you have a lot of smaller fish.

hey Dave, your videos are great and you've taught us all a lot. but i have one small suggestion. when you catch and release fish, always wet your hands before touching them. when your hands are dry they remove the outer "slime" on the fish, and that leaves them prone to disease and sickness.

I caught and scaled my share of sunfish when i was young...they are good eating...ours got twice as big as those in upstate new york. I liked perch meat better, and trout even better than perch. The sunfish is a mainstay...there's tons of them in all ponds and lakes and provide a very good and quick meal.

Brother here is a recipe for you that works with Yellow Perch, Goldeye, and White Fish. You need onion, mild cheddar, seasoning salt, pepper, aluminum foil... and the fish. Scale and gut the fish, cut the fins off and head and tail if you wish. Season the cavity with the salt and pepper and stuff with some of the cheese and onion, wrap in foil and place in coals, BBQ or oven. Cook for about to min and rest for min... oops forgot about the butter put just a bit of that in the fish to.

If the two fishes were caught within a short window back to back, then that'd make sense but procuring food in the wild usually means you may catch one fish quickly and the other an hour or two later. Live food stores better, and only building a fire once and cook once is far more efficient, especially in a survival situation. If he caught a really large fish, he might even consider letting those two go, an option he has as well when stringing them..

Sunfish size has mostly to do with population and food availability. Generally lakes with undersized sunfish have over population and under predation. Typically in ponds with big sunfish also have large predators in them, and intermediate sunfish are sparse, only mature fish that can fend for themselves, and young fish that havnt been eaten yet.
Atleast thats what Ive noticed freediving freshwater.
