    I can't personally comment on JiuJitsu, but as a rule of thumb: you must realize that no system is perfect, the second you've summited to believing "Nothing is flawed in this system, their are no flaws in what I practice." just might be the day you've lost.

      There are a lot of good intentioned and passionate "gun guys" who willingly choose to keep their head in the sand. I hope they never experience the rude awakening that some folks have.
      While I won't argue about the right to own a firearm, I want to propose that this right comes with great responsibilities as well.

    This is where BJJ needs to evole or after time this same topic will come up again and again. Just as TMA's had to evole after MMA clearly demonstrated what actually works and discard the rubbish BJJ will start facing a major backlash when it's practioners publically call it out(going to floor, punches, grappling for knifes and multiples). I love BJJ but it needs to evolve.

    As a survivor of a knife attack I wonder if we are asking too much from the martial arts/combative systems we practice? (empty handed against knife, guns, sticks, multiple attackers?… perhaps at some point it is just too unrealistic to think odds will be in one’s favour).
    Weapons are force multipliers; they were invented for a reason… because they really work! I would say incorporate knife self defence tactics in your training and depending on what part of the world you live in perhaps even carry a weapon as well if violence is too prevalent where you live and the chances are you will have to deal with it sooner or later. There is not much else you can do…. Just be prepared and remember prevention goes a long way.

    • @Venomxjjb
      @Venomxjjb 2 года назад

      I would say as far as knives go you're pretty screwed no matter the MA. They hide easy in the hand (especially in a dark club) and will end up IN YOU faster than most will even realize a knife is in play. As far as multiple attackers and BIGGER attackers, this is a must. almost NO fights stay one on one for long and there are no weight classes.

  • @GlueFactoryBJJ

    No martial art is perfect for every situation. So, yes, cross training and, as you say, "specificity training" are very important to BROADEN the applications of your chosen martial art.
    I spent the better part of 20 years training in kung fu, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Isshin Ryu, Shotokan, a little Mongolian wrestling, and finally, about 18 months of BJJ. However, I would trade ALL of those other martial arts for even 10 years of training in BJJ. As the Machado (Gracie family) brothers are credited with saying, "I am a shark and the floor is my ocean."
    Any fight can (and usually will) be taken to the ground. The question is, "What will you do once you get there?" Wrestling can help you control the ground, but BJJ will get you the submission (or worse, if necessary).
    I haven't done any martial arts for about 15 years now (after knee and shoulder replacements), but if I were to pick up one now, it would definitely be BJJ (at least to start).
    My $.02...

  • @Impalingthorn

    Problem inherent to every grappling art:
    They advertise themselves as a self defense art when that is simply not realistic.
    Most real fights will involve one of two things: Multiple dudes coming at you at once, or weapons.
    Do you REALLY want to be trying to fold your arms and legs around a dude bearing a knife?
    And more over, do you really think it's ethical to tell people that something like BJJ should be used as a means of self defense over something like Muay Thai or a commando art like Arnis or Krav? Like, you legit have Mc'Dojos out there acting like people don't carry pocket knives. This is shit that will get people stabbed.
    Ya gotta look at Martial Arts like a utility knife; there's different tools for a reason. Train them all. Be prepared for everything.

    • @kaen4299
      @kaen4299 2 года назад

      Multiple guys with weapons is a worst case, most fights occur because of random shitt involving drunk people or with street thugs who got nothing better to do and it's most of the time bare handed fighting. It's kinda ridicilous how many people turn the average physical altercation into some Mortal Kombat situation, that's not the realtiy. I'm not saying it's not going to happen, it's just unlikely and it's strongly dependant on the country you're living in. And for a matter of fact, fights involve grappling more often than not. It starts with striking but usually turns into grappling. Pure grappler vs pure striker usually favours the grappler because he can dictate where the fight is going to.

    To be fair though, if you are rolling with a guy on the floor and only realized after the guy pulls a knife that the guy is a trained knife fighter, you’ve fucked up real bad to not recognize early on that the guy could be trained and could be armed. Your only chance at that point to salvage the situation is to disengage and pull out your gun; or grab a bigger melee weapon that is bigger than his knife. In other words, make it an unfair fight to your advantage as much as you can.
    These knife disarm stuff you only would have a chance at pulling off if the guy with the knife is a schmuck who doesn’t know how to handle a knife.

    No. no no no no no. If you want to win a fight in the street, learn boxing. Learn to throw hard accurate punches and elbows. DO NOT use BJJ for street self defense. To do so and expect good results, you have to assume that you're okay dropping onto the pavement and fucking up your clothes, your opponent had no buddies that will come stomp on your head, and he doesn't have a knife he's going to gut you with when you put him in a hold.

  • @gagworks

    LOL that's not how one does and armbar from guard at all. In reality you will be facing the other way and it will be hard to stab a vital organ before you get your arm broken. Not that that will stop you for sure, especially if you're on adrenaline or drugs, but yeah, that's a terrible armbar from guard. Also, as a jiujitiero I would question how the fight got to the ground in the first place, before even a knife was drawn. I good grappler will slam you first and then keep top position, especially on hard ground. Its not so easy,' and we're not only good on our backs. Jut saying that reality is very different and messy from this video.

    Jujitsu is fine if its a one on one situation but in most attacks on the street the criminal brings a buddy or two so if you take the first guy to the ground his buddies will kick your head in so what is Jujitsus answer that to that sort of thing as other arts have an answer for it ? Mind you i trained in Jujitsu for a few years to learn how to ground fight but that concern was always on my mind.

    BJJ ["Jiujitsu"] is worse than useless in most situations. Y'all living in a sport-biased bubble of delusion. What y'all don't understand, because you only know external styles like MMA and that real kung fu masters don't bother with combat sports, is that grappling predisposes you to being grappled and kills your mobility, unless you're an internal style grandmaster [you are not]. This wastes time and exposes you getting screwed by stronger, mauling, multiple and/or armed opponents. Y'all also don't understand that unless you're psychic you don't know if a situation is going to involve stronger, mauling, multiple and/or armed opponents. So grabbing guys slows you down, gives up your position, pressure, intent etc. exposes you to being moved by the attacker, countergrappled, break your fingers and takes too long and is too complex, not being efficient in stopping the fight relative to a simple strike. You can't immediately escape the situation should it turn against you. It's just retarded. That's just grappling upright... Grappling on the ground is full retard.

  • @thejoshbtv
    @thejoshbtv 2 года назад +11

    BJJ takes place on the ground. The last place you want to be in a fight is on the ground. When on the ground, there arises the 3 B's of ground fighting: biting, buddies and blades. You should know enough BJJ to be able to deal with people who may want to take you to the ground, or if you slip and end up there on accident. Get back up as quickly as possible. Most people that train BJJ train with the understanding of the person tapping so they will more than likely default to trying to put them in a lock of some sort and hoping that the person they are fighting, not competing against, understands the rules of BJJ. That is where the disconnect is.

      @@Radical.Freedom Well considering there was an entire section of the video showing how you'll get yourself sliced up doing that shit in a life and death encounter, I'm pretty sure I was right on the mark. BJJ is a perfectly fine sport. It is not a suitable self-defense. There are aspects of it that are good to know, as there are of every art out there. But people acting like it is the be all, end all of martial arts are a bit delusional.

    • @Radical.Freedom
      @Radical.Freedom 2 года назад +1

      Joshbtv; yep the point of the video isn’t that bjj is the end all be all, I’d be the last person to say that. It has its flaws as do all systems, and realistically all people. However if you take tools from bjj and incorporate them with other tools you can be a very well rounded “fighter”. That was the point of the video, while it exposes some of the flaws of bjj it also goes on to show others who are incorporating it into a more holistic approach.
