What's your MUST HAVE art supply? Tell us in the comments!
Hi! A fellow self-taught artist here! I'm a psychologist with a PhD in cross-cultural psychology, but my childhood dream was to be a manga artist! Well, life happened and I ended up majoring in psychology and then moved to Japan to do my PhD there. I still want to build an artist career and have recently started to create art regularly. I'm on a 100-day project at the moment and looking for inspiration. Thankfully, I just discovered your channel, and I'm binge watching your content. I'll be following from now on. Keep up the great work! :)
That's such a nice comment! I guess we can still enjoy art, or even build a career with it, during adulthood and without college studies, while the same is not possibile for physics or psychology. You are living a dream, it's a long time I'd like to visit Japan... My dream trip. Thanks for watching and hope to give you more inspiration!
@@illustrazionidilut Thanks for your reply! I totally agree! I'm really glad that I majored in psychology, but I wish I created more art alongside during my studies and work. I've been drawing since childhood, but I almost stopped creating while working full-time, but slowly going back to creating again. As far as I understand, you also work full-time. So much respect to how you maintain doing art alongside. This is something I should learn as well.
I had the same experience, starting university I stopped drawing almost completely. I started again before and during covid pandemic. Yes, I work full time, but my job is quite flexible and gives me enough free time to practice art. So I'm lucky for that. I'm more and more pursuing an art career in parallel, with watercolor classes, social media and this channel growing quickly this week. So the moment I should decide what to do with all of that is approaching
@@illustrazionidilut It's great that your job is flexible and you take it as an opportunity to create art regularly. I hope you can create an artist career that can provide you with enough income if that's what you decide to aim for. Best of luck! (Will be following your footsteps!) :)
Thanks a lot for your kind messages! Let's see what future bring us
A Kinder Surprise capsule is the best container for your kneaded eraser.
Must steal it from my nephews 😏
Yes, I use them too. :D
The Rohrer and Klinger ink is lightfast! I love this company a lot.
They are very high quality!
I ❤ my R12 Dagger Rosemary & Co travel brush and a Borciani e Bonazzi Unico 4 Mop. I ❤ the handle on B&B brushes especially. On paints, I put together a 18 set of Maimeri Blu, which are all single pigments. My most fun suppkies are the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water soluble wax pastels. This was a fun video to watch. You use many materials that are new to me. Grazie, Luigi!
You use a lot of Italian brands and I guess B&B is only now in Italy... Are you Italian? I've never tried pastels, but I am trying to not start new materials now 🙊 gouache is the latest love from last year. How do you use dagger brush? I found it useful only for leaves and flowers
@@illustrazionidilut IYes, I have some Italian supplies :-) Neocolor Ii are like watercolours / gouache on a stick. They dissolve completely. I sketch in museums a lot, where wet media is not allowed. Neocolor IIs and a water brush do the trick. I go to 🇮🇹 often and buy stuff there. I also shop from Momarte online for the Italian brands I like, as they deliver to 🇩🇪. Both Maimeri and BB are hard to find here. The R12 dagger brush is very versatile: it paints thin straight lines if you paint on the side, it can do washes and organic shapes like leaves, petals, it also has a super sharp pointy. I can do a lot with just one brush when I paint Plein air, as I try not to bring many supplies with me. I saw it used by Liz Steel in her urban sketches and knew I had to have one. Do you sketch outside a lot?
I didn't know it wasn't allowed in museums! Good to know for the future. I'm drawing a lot outside since one year, also in café because I like to draw people being sitting comfortably. Where are you in Germany? I'm living in Munich. Momarte shipping abroad is not cheap right? I prefer to go the shops here in the city
@@illustrazionidilut I sketched in Museums in Berlin and Frankfurt -neither accept water based media. Not sure what it might be in Munich. Momarte ships internationally for €15 flat. If I get a few things together, it is worth it. I only order Italian materials which are impossible or hard to find here. I also like going to the shops. Sadly, small shops are disappearing. Only big ones like Boesner still remain...but I find them very overwhelming.
I like boesner! And gerstäcker even more
I love Escoda brushes! 🖌And Arches is my favourite paper (so bad it's so expensive!) ; paper is the most important supply in watercolour : always 300 gr. (140 lbs) and 100% cotton. And if I could, I'd buy more Daniel Smith colours!
Your creations are stunning.
Thanks a lot for your comment! I've never tried Escoda Brushes...Daniel Smith neither but I eventually want to try. Arches is really beautiful paper, I agree!
My favorite art supplies are Daniel Smith watercolor paints and Pentallic Aqua Journal sketchbooks. I also like the Escoda travel brushes.
I haven't tried any of these! Daniel Smith intrigued me a a lot!
And the sketchbook looks great? Is it watercolor or mixed media?
@@illustrazionidilut Daniel Smith is real popular in the US. I love it.
Yes most of the artist I follow use them!
Thank your for showing your sketch books! I like to watch videos like that but most sketch books are more art books - too perfect to be true. ;) Your sketch books are encouraging. Also thank you for showing your art supplies. I also like to hear your voice with your italian accent. :) Greetings from Germany.
I live in Germany and I actually feel like I have a strong German accent in English now! There is a playlist about sketchbook tours if you want to have a look
I'm a food scientist who dabbled for years with video editing as a hobby and now I'm on a journey to become a self-taught artist (: currently, my must-have art supplies are 9B derwent graphic pencils and Daniel Smith watercolor sticks with 100% cotton paper
Welcome and good luck for your dreams v
I can only tell I love my Pentel Graph Gear 500, white nights and Fabriano artist aquarello paper, others, I have no experience of. Loved the self portrait and soon going to watch the sketch book tour
Oh, but my favourite w/c are Mijello mission gold, I got them with an amazing bargain (24 set), cheaper than white nights and even got a Talens art creation sketchbook as a present, also one of mine and everyone else's favourite I think. It's easily approachable and makes you reach for it all the time
I'm so curious about the talens art creation sketchbook! Is it the squared red one right? And Mijello as well, I was going to buy them when I got white nights... Thanks for watching, and I am glad you like the painting
@@illustrazionidilut They come in vrious shpes and sizes, I got th a5 landscape one in denim blue. I can totally recommend mijello, single pigmented, soooo easy to mix, you don't even have to think
Goodness! you’re amazing.
Thank you for sharing all this amazing supplies, I love gouache and water coloring. I find myself very lucky to have come across your channel wonderful.
Thanks so much for your comment and for watching! Comments like this are a good boost to keep going!
This is fascinating ☺☺☺
Oh nooo, I’m gonna have to hide my wallet 😅 lovely video, appreciate you doing in English. I love using all kinds of materials and have found the Strathmore Mixed Media 500 sketchbook to be the most forgiving and great if you enjoy both wet and dry mediums. The spiral bound visual journals are 100% cotton and a bit more affordable than the hardcover/softcover versions, though same 500 paper 😊
Oh wow thanks a lot for the info! I was already looking them, thought they were a bit expensive tho... I received a sketchbook from Smlt art, they i plan to use for mixed media, but I haven't started yet. Yes, I was going to try videos in Italian before the last couple of videos. Right now I think I will stick to English... Thanks for watching ✨
@@illustrazionidilut I agree, the larger bound ones are pricey - Ive had the softcover one sitting in my amazon basket for ages for that reason :D the Visual Journals are cheaper though, but they are spiral bound, which bothers some people (me, haha!). Not sure how much they are in Italy but here in the UK the large one can be had for under £20, which I guess is still a lot, but the paper is really nice. I use A LOT of water with my watercolours and although it does buckle a bit, the colours and granulation look beautiful. Same with fountain pen inks, the colour separation you get with them comes out so nice! Ive tried the cheaper Seawhite and Royal Talens, and they are just not super good for wet stuff.
I checked on German Amazon and they are more than 30€. Considering my Hahnemühle cotton sketchbook is up to 50€, it's still reasonable...
Thank you for your detailed presentation about your favorite art supplies.
Thanks for watching ✨
Nice to meet you, Luigi! Love your work. Found several things that I need. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the nice comment! Hope you enjoy the materials as much as I do!
I use the same temu brand as your travel brush but in regular quills, I use it for going outside because they are cheap in case I lose them. I do have some travel brushes, the Jackson’s Artica and Escoda Ultimo, one details and the ultimo for washes.
I like travel brushes, but I find the water brush much more practical to reactivate watercolors and potentially no water dispenser needed
My must have art supply is a hot press watercolor sketchbook (preferably either Etchr or Koval), because it gives me more mixed media versatility.
Koval sketchbook looks like a dream... I'd like to try them! I have a small etchr hot pressed, good quality but I have impression that on small size is not that important that it is cotton or cellulose
My favourite sketchbooks: cheap but good is Seawhite Of Brighton and Clairefontaine Goldline. Great but expensive: Stillman & Birn Epsilon.
Stillman and Birn is for mixed media?
@@illustrazionidilut there are several different S&B sketchbooks but all of them are mixed media, it’s just a difference in paper thickness and texture :) but the Seawhite and Goldline are also suitable for watercolour washes (just nothing too heavy)
Thank you 😊
Love your video Luigi! Art supplies i can't live without have to be my sketchbook, pocket brush pen and watercolors. I started to go out more often and took my trusted roman szmal custom built palette anywhere i went but i just got a viviva watercolor wallet for my trip to italy!
That sounds amazing! How to get custom built palette? You mean you choose colors or also the design itself? It's a great collection of memories and a higher lever of connection with the place around to me
@@illustrazionidilut i chose all the colors to fit me individually as premade sets always lack what i need most. i modified the tin that paints are in as well and plan to commission somebody to make me a fully custom tin in the future!
Great video, thank you. My preferred sketchbook is the perfect sketchbook by Etchr. Beautiful 100% cotton paper, suitable for drawing and washes.
Yes but... The price 🤯
@@illustrazionidilut that's the big downside indeed
Baohong also has artist grade watercolor paper, maybe give it a try
Is it worth it? I've heard the artist grade difference is minimal
Lo sai che amo quel genere di video inutile dirlo 😂 bravo
Certo! ☺
Great video, thanks. What was the brand of the last sketchbook you showed, please? (The small travel sketchbook)
Do you mean the sketchbook which I lînk the sketchbook tour? It was hahnemühle, but pulp paper
@@illustrazionidilutyes, that’s the one! Thanks very much!
Good video. Worth noting that white nights is a Russian brand and it would be good for consumers to choose their products with other considerations in mind. Rosa Gallery or Roman Szmal are also very high quality paints at affordable price points.
I've recently heard about Rosa and I was curious about them. Thanks for watching
I love white nights. Those are great affordable paints. Also, I'm not indoctrinated by politics. ;)
I really like Caran D'ache Luminance pencils....not sure I like the price though!
Expensive jewellery
My favourite paper for gouache and watercolour is from Khadi Papers: A4 320gsm 100% cotton rag paper. I prefer coldpressed textured paper so this is perfect for me.
It’s pricy at £19 (€22) for 20 A4 sheets but because I only paint on A6 I have 80 sheets for that price, which is a bargain!
Never tried this but sounds good! Thanks for sharing!
Where do you buy art supplies in München?
Hi there, do you live in Munich as well? My favourite shops are Boesner in Ostbahnhof and Gerstäcker in Trudering!
@@illustrazionidilut yes, I moved here last summer. I still have to explore all the art s. shops here. Thanks for any recommendations!
No problem! Where are you from?
Haha, is there anything more stereotypically an artist trait than accidentally flicking too far through your sketches and showing someone else your rude art? I know why you all learnt to draw (and I’ve done it myself too…)
Ahah no I have no problem showing those, but RUclips would punish me for that 😁
