    In-depth analysis of The Small Council Chairs Scene from Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 3.
    This is Tywin Lannister. And without saying a single word, he's about to expose the true nature of every person in this room. Because in the game of thrones, sometimes the most revealing moments happen in complete silence.
    Now, what makes this scene so brilliant is that on the surface, nothing really happens. A group of people walk into a room and sit down. That's it. No dramatic confrontation, no shocking twist, no blood spilled. And yet somehow, this tiny moment tells us more about these characters than entire episodes of dialogue ever could.
    So what really makes this scene work? What really makes it one of the most clever pieces of visual storytelling the show has ever done? Let me break it all down for you.

      Cersei picks up the chair to show her equality in strength to the men. Tyrion drags it as comedy and to show despite his limitations he will achieve his goals no matter if it annoys you.

      @MrDeltoric I think it's the opposite.
      Tywin can't help but notice it and that's the reason why he hates Tyrion so much. If it weren't for that, Tyrion would probably suffer only contempt from his father. If the dwarf who he blames for the death of his wife were nothing like him, that's something he could probably endure.
      Instead, he has to suffer being reminded of it all the time.

      @lelgazelle And he´s more like him than the others because of his doing, he sharpen Tyrion the most with his contempt than whatever he tried to do with Jaime. That and the need for approval Tyron had of course. He couldn´t bear that his most despised child was his most worthy successor and still made use of his capable mind as hand in his absence

      I think that's what says the most, tywin is extremely petty, he will childishly move around chairs with a dead serious face and convince himself it's some ingenious test of character. It works because his council isn't all that good. Sometimes he really is Cersei without tits.

Then J said something like "let me know if you need to use this," to the other test takers. K smiles, because J is perfect for the role, even if he doesn't know why.

    A big part of Tywin's annoyance is the long simmering realization that the child he least likes, respects not at all, is actually the best heir he could have hoped for but cannot, will not, acknowledge.

    • @BrotherHood-xh9sg
      @BrotherHood-xh9sg Month ago +82

      Tyrion is not the best heir he could have had. He would be the best of his children, but not the best heir. His brother was the best heir, being far more intelligent, capable, better military leader in appearance and strategy, and having less destructive vices.
      Tywin was correct about Tyrion, despite his hate.

      The funny part is that Tywin isn’t the only one who understands this. In the books, Tywin has a sister, Genna Lannister, who shares the same view. She even discusses it directly with Jamie, explaining that she believes Tyrion is Tywin’s true son, that neither Cersei nor Jaime resembles him as closely as Tyrion does.
      Genna grew up alongside Tywin and may be the only person in the Seven Kingdoms who truly knew him without ever fearing him. And every time she looks at Tyrion, she sees Tywin reflected back
      "You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg, and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak... but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you."

    There's also a great moment where Ceresi is pretending to write in a scroll, forcing her audience (Lady Olenna) to wait for her to speak. She learned that from Tywin who himself either used it as a tool to suppress others to his will before they've even spoken, or was legitimately too busy to start when the audience makes itself present.
    Amazing, then, that Olenna then speaks up first, outright calling out the charade for what it was. She had no time for that bull.

    It should be noted that Tyrion is also demonstrated to be Tywin's equal by the action of the scene. He sees the test immediately and lets everyone else compete for the test, favoring watching them above all else. He's collecting the data. He even looks at Cersei almost challenging her to jump into the test next. One other thing Tyrion does to establish himself as equal is he's the first person to speak after he sits.
    Though I would also say that this scene, while excellent, is not subtle. And that's not a bad thing. It grinds the show to a halt to have this test making it impossible to ignore and it wouldn't have been that hard to guess what would actually happen if we knew what the test was in advance. And yet it still adds a bit of depth to the characters and helps reinforce the authority of both Tywin and Tyrion.

      And she walked behind the men on purpose so that if they want to see her, they'd have to move their heads, making them physically not facing (=focusing on) Tywin. They'd also need to look up, symbolising that she is above them.
      And this may be a stretch, but also walking behind Tywin symbolises that she is the 2nd strongest.
      BTW Littlefinger's expression here is so funny. He's upset that he got one-upped by Cersei and is refusing to look at her. His arm tactic is completely useless, hahahha. Where'd your silly smirk go, huh?

      I feel it speaks to her understanding the rules of the game, and shows her unrelenting willingness to break the rules to grant her power. I feel like she's thinking outside the box for other ways to give herself more importance or power. She's devious, she's smart, and she's willing to break rules to get what she wants.
      Her smug smile tells me she's fully aware of what's going on. She's not a child who just wanna sit close to daddy without knowing what the social construct means. She's clever and fully aware of it. Based on her facial expressions (glorious acting on that, btw).

      @Luthando-c6b3y Exactly like he did there. Why destroy his army and fortune to fight in the mad Kings war? He tried no assaults, wasted no lifes and coin. Didn't have to contribute to the larger war effort as long as the siege lasted. He sent a few men to the trident, which shows he knows how far he can go without losing face unlike one Walder Frey. When Robert won there, Mace wasnt the guy who razed his home to the ground and killed his brother. So he could simply bent his knee to Robert without grievance, as the only Loyalist commander with a major victory against him (which wasnt his accomplishment but that didnt keep him from taking credit) and as the only major participant that didnt suffer staggering losses. He left the war more powerfull than he entered it. Didn't even look as bad as Tywin Lannister who played a similar game and joined the winners side.

    I agree with you for the most part and think your analysis is brilliant.
    I'd just add that Cersei and Tyrion do have what I would consider a different level of status because they're related to Tywin.
    Littlefinger wants to cozy up to power, and Varys and Pycelle are fine with the layout (I do think Varys might have sat next to Littlefinger wherever he sat in order to keep an eye on him).
    But Cersei and Tyrion aren't really counselors. Accepting the seats as Tywin laid them out, even if they could have had the first seat that Littlefinger took, would be setting themselves up as sort of servants to Tywin rather than his children. They both HAD to do something different in order to maintain their status. If they didn't, they would have been accepting lower status than being a Lannister.

      I also think Varys sits in the middle so that he can hear everyone, both "above" and "below" him. He's not the master of power, he's the master of whisperers so he wants to hear all the grumbles and grunts and exhaled breaths even from those "far from power".

    • @user-yl9rn8us4k
      @user-yl9rn8us4k Month ago +3

      She put herself in a better position to look at the "council" than Tywin. To read their facial expressions as they answered to him directly and to watch for hesitations. Who is paying attention to her paying attention? She took the best seat in the kingdom in this scene. Her biggest problem is what Tywin said. She's not as smart as she thinks she is... But she was pretty smart. Problem is that can lead to worse problems than just playing a part. Tyrion took the next best seat, but the best seat that he could take. He was exactly as smart as he thought he was and proved it. He took a seat which could not be ignored, wouldn't presume defiance even if it was annoying, and made social sense in that he was going to have to speak up to be heard by all for sitting that far from the man with power. If he didn't speak up he would be the guy whispering and looking Tywin dead in the face, commanding his attention in a way that Tywin wouldn't dare to manage. The room would have to go quiet for Tyrion sitting at the other head of the table at a minimum to make sure everyone was respecting Tywin absolutely from Tywins point of view, and that Tyrion was still an impressive representation of his family from his own point of view. It's part of why he told Shae this is what he's good at. Finding out his value live in front of everyone who hates him.

    I have often considered, if Joffrey didn't accidentally accuse Tyrion when pointing at the poison cup, and Tyrion wasn't charged for the crime, there's a very real possibility that Tommen picks Tyrion over Tywin as his Hand, and Tyrion saves Margery from Cersei.
    Tyrion and Tommen not only had an incredible relationship as uncle and nephew, but in Tommen's eyes, he's been an absolutely positive influence on the capital during his Brother's tyranny. Tommen had the wisdom to see that Tywin would use him as a puppet, while Tyrion would support him in his rule.
    If Tyrion simply hadn't approached the cup, the Lannisters would have never fallen.
    It's difficult to say how Tommen would handle Danarys, but I find it difficult to believe that he'd let it come to a massive war, especially with the night king coming. And Tyrion would have taken the warnings of the Night's Watch seriously, and given good counsel to Tommen.

    Tywin’s power comes from the combination of his physical prowess, his ambition, and his intelligence. It’s interesting how he each of his children inherited one of those traits, but none of the others.
    -Jamie got Tywin’s physical prowess, but not his ambition and intelligence.
    -Cersei got Tywin’s ambition, but not his physical prowess or intelligence.
    -Tyrion got Tywin’s intelligence, but not his physical prowess or ambition.
    Tywin’s constant frustration through out the series seems to be him trying to hammer at least one additional core trait into at least one of his children. Ironically, the only one he sort of succeeded with was Tyrion, his least favorite.

    I think it's telling that Littlefinger is literally the only person in the room who never had to deal with Tywin in any manner. Not closely. Which just makes the childish stepping in front of Varys - who is probably the only person Littlefinger actually recognized as a rival/threat - that much funnier.
    Varys has information. Pycelle has his own uses - and he's playing a long con on his end too - as a maester. Cersei thinks she's Tywin with breasts. And Tyrion has grown up with these people one way or another. Littlefinger is the only one out of his depth.
    Which is telling since Tywin sort of makes everyone around him drown sooner or later.

      Littlefinger isn't out of his depth with anyone. I'm not counting the "two young girls outsmarted him" bullsh*t. That does not come from the books. Tywin wouldn't be what he is if his last name wasn't Lannister. The only character on par with Littlefinger is the Night King.

      @BilboGandalfhogan something good. Littlefinger recognized Arya, but didn't tell Tywin it was the younger Stark daughter. He did it so he can use that information later in a better way to suit his agenda. Tywin knew something was not right with that girl and that she was from the North, but never bothered to find out how exactly she got there. Hence, Littlefinger is smarter than Tywin. He only serves him because that's his station and his role in the kingdoms. Tywin was one of the high lords that Littlefinger successfully manipulated.
