Her piano playing has always intrigued me. Because on one hand....it always sounds SO effortless and light to the touch and airy and ebbs and flows beautifully. On the other hand, Aurora often jokes that she's not that great at piano....and sure enough, she almost _exclusively_ plays these arpeggiated motifs with a moving bass line. It's very consistently simple. I think she's just zeroed in on a style of playing that suits her sound AND allows her to sing easily over top. She just makes it look so effortless. And it's also cool how she's just an ok piano player...but her entire approach to playing elevates it all to sound a lot more complex and impressive than it might actually be. I would LOVE to hear her play other instruments while singing during these sorts of live streams. The one she did for The Woman I Am where she played a lute(or was it a mandolin??) was super cool. Sounded very very good....especially during that bright crisp insanely catchy "eee eee eee eee eeyah" vocal hook.
I've never thought of her piano playing a whole lot. But she's able to bring her style and the way she sings into the way she plays piano. Oh my gosh yes, a whole live stream with the wonderful lute playing would be heavenly, I'm so glad we got a full version of the woman I am on lute, its sounds like sunshine or something, what songs would you like to hear with the lute?
She probably never cares to practice her piano playing. For her, it is only a songwriting tool. When she jokes about her piano playing not being so good, it's related to the fact that some of her collaborators (like Askjell) are on a different level. I believe these arpeggiated (haunting) minor chord transitions (With the moving bass line) are something that has always intrigued her. Because towards the end of the song she plays the original chords as effortlessly (Still Askjell chooses to play a total copy of her piano solo on "Through the eyes of a child" ( Nidaros Domen concert). I remember she did a similar thing with Conqueror in the "Nothing is eternal" documentary. It became a very different song.
She plays simple stuff on the piano, but that she plays extremely well. Also, she is very good rhythmically. She can play 2 against 3 left / right, or piano vs. vocal (does this on Runaway, for instance), and she can phrase freely with her vocals while keeping a steady rhythm on the piano (as if 2 different people were playing it). My favorite piano performance of hers is "The Seed" for Like a Version, check it out if you like her piano playing. Also she plays a piano solo (!) for BBC piano sessions on "A temporary High", which is easy, but also really cool.
@@singingsongsilove4278 You're so right about her timing. She has impeccable timing. And has the confidence to push/pull with the rhythm in evocative ways. The meandering stuff she does on that Teardrop cover is a cool example. The fact she can play anything at ALL.....while singing as powerfully and perfectly as she does....is impressive enough. I love music theory and such....but I love even more how intuitive her writing and playing is. She's more knowledgeable about theory than she lets on(her Song Exploder podcast episode proves that) but she doesn't get mired in theory....she realizes that at the end of the day, the ONLY thing that actually matters is how the sounds make you feel. The timbre....and overall emotion of what you actually hear.
She has moved the piano from the bedroom to her living room. Maybe because then she can play at any time without being concerned about disturbing the neighbor's sleeping :)
