You guys ROCK!!! You're the only people I know who have ever caught the CDMX mustard crooks out of all the cases I've heard about. Bravo!

@Betty-my3tw We heard this was quite common, and you just never believe it's going to happen to you, until it does. How often have you heard of this happening?

I moved my wallet to my front pocket nearly 30 years ago. It's safer and better for you back too.

Yes. we don't want to point fingers or to label people from other regions but these type of crimes have been happening since Mexico stopped asking for visas to South Americans and since then these are very frequent. Also, people stealing on bikes, extortions, breaking into houses, more things without mentioning that a lot arrive as tourists and never leave.

    • @fourthdeconstruction

Mexico entered in to a trade deal named Pacific Alliance with the aim to increase trade but since Mexico was the only non south american country, these countries asked Mexico to take away the visa requirements for their citizens. This deal has increased trade barely in more than 5 yrs. It's been a failure but it has increased significantly the flow of South Americans into Mexico. We don't know who is entering into Mexico @@Betty-my3tw

It is like that in the USA as well. Many criminals were allowed to enter as migrants and now the crime is getting out of control. They have no fear.

@@dreamlifeinMexico I am from California. I am thinking of moving to Mexico also in the future. I am still debating between Guanajuato, San Miguel A., Merida, or Oaxaca. I love the ocean but I am also scared of Tsunamis. My BF wants Mazatlan. :) I wish your family well.

Sorry to hear about your trouble here in Mexico-City.
My experience over the course of 21 years living in Mexico-City with this type of situations is: even though in public they got arrested, they will be out of jail before you can say: cat in a hat!

Those scammers are mainly from South America, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru....in Mexico they don't use those distracting techniques...is mainly pickpockets at the metro or in crowded places..I haven't been too much in CDMX but I know that

Good job on the response and follow up guys, gracias for taking the time to do the right thing. Same thing happened to me in quito ecuador, got hit with the mustard and nice appearing father and son team approached to help. I had read about the scam but didn't realize it was happening, just felt wierd so i walked away quickly with no loss. Worst part was the clean up. This shit happens everywhere, but american tourists are a target, be aware.

Me and Landy were just talking about that. I had heard about it maybe a year ago or so, and when it happening it just doesn't click, many times until it's too late. Luckily, like you, something felt wrong, and that's when i reached for my pocket!

How awesome that you caught one of the women! Good for you that you stuck with it, like you said, someone else was saved from the same fate that day because you captured her partner. I'm glad that you were aware of the scam. Oh, you got it all back, that's wonderful!! Louie was cute at the end of the video.

Sorry that happened to you guys, but did You have your wallet in your back pocket? You guys know to always have your valuables in a zipped or buttoned pocket preferably in the front. Again sorry, I like you guys am very world traveled, but got robbed/scammed in Puerto Vallarta a year or so ago. Still feel very safe in Mexico that said.

as much as we appreciate the advice, I'm not gonna change my whole life walking around like a tourist, but from time to time I do put my valuables in my front pocket with my hand inside depending on the situation, but that's about it.
