I appreciate that you mentioned not removing the "story" when cleaning up. I have restored a few saws that have initials carved or stamped into them, and it encourages me to think about what their history might have been.
You sir remind me of a much younger version of my grandfather. For an older gent like myself, you do my soul well to know that good young men like yourself will be taking my place in a few years. Keep the craft alive, power tools are nice, just not necessity.
Glad to see more long form videos mate. I’ve always been a bit skitsy about buying saws in this kind of nick but now I know they aren’t too far gone. Good to see a saw from the great North East of England 😁
I’ve been kicking myself not grabbing some before I got in to restoration very recently. Restoring a nice Disston backsaw and it’s truly magic. They made them to last!
I had my grandfather's handtools - he was a cabinetmaker apprenticed in the 1930s in South Australia. Over the years though moving from house to house I've lost them, lent them to people and not got them back. Now after about 30-40 years I finally have a house and have a place I could take them out, I don't have most of them, This is one of the huge regrets of my life. He had a saw very much like this one, as far as I can remember right down to the screws in the handle - there was also a screwdriver that fit or was modified like Eoin''s to fit the handle screws. Not having had the resources and not having gone the extra exrtra step to make sure I kept them really is one of my huge regrets. I almost want to cry seeing this saw.
Started making a handle for my grandfather old hammer (he passed when i was 6 months old). I'm missing a spoke shave to round out the handle however. It'll be my 18th birthday soon though, so i will wait with buying one till then in case i get one as a present. :) Love the video as allways. Please continue your great work
Going through a lot of my Grandad's old tools and restoring them, and now I know why there are a couple of weird screwdrivers with notches cut out of them! Always fascinated by the custom tools you find!
Dudes the Bob Ross of wood working! Something very calming about watching your videos mate, keep up the good work. Here to stay. So much to learn from you.
Hi my friend, I'm 18 years old and from germany, I'm starting to get into wood working myself and just wanted to say how much I apreciate your videos and your style of making them. And btw thanks for the beginner tool video, that was very helpfull for me. Keep doing what you're doing.👍
Love your vids my friend! I have a lot of interest in DIY woodworking, furniture restoration etc., and your videos remind me that there's no reason to blow $300-400 on a specialty power tool when I can get the job done with a humble hand tool I already own. Best wishes to you!
I love your videos eoin! You have brought me much peace as I'm dealing with my family in Ukraine i always count on your videos to pull me out of anxiety attacks. You are very talented my friend ❤️
Everything i see you do brings me back to when i was a wee boy working with my papa in his shed. he introduced me to handtools and hard work and he was one of the best men ive ever met. i work mostly with metal nowadays as a machinist but i cant help but feel a connection to woodworking from when i was a young lad. I dont know how i would make a living from wood working, but these videos and my old memories make me want to.
Thank you Eoin for your help and intuition on how to restore tools, in this case a Backsaw. I have a Backsaw and now your video has giving me the confidence to have a go at restoring it. Cheers 😅😅😅
Just got a crap ton of old tools for $6. Hoping to get them as nice as yours. As usual Eoin makes a grate restoration tutorial. Keep up the grate work!
The new camera adds a lot of production value, it's looks very professional now. Before you return that saw, you should make a template of that handle...
I do the same kind of stuff you do just don't film it but watching your videos gives me ideas and helps me relax when my own projects go astray. Thank you for the content.
A joy to watch your videos. Your workshop makes a great backdrop in the videos as well. Always inspiring and I admire your imagination to keep coming up with great ideas. Well done. One Handed Maker - Australia
Love your videos and new to your channel. I don't know what it is that makes watching your videos so satisfying. I would really like to see more videos of you showing us the works of other craftmans and the beauty of Ireland.💪🇮🇪😊much love from Mexico and the US🇲🇽🇺🇸👍 muy Bien travajo❤
Another way of cleaning the handles but leaving the history is 0000 steel wool and meths. Not my idea but Paul Sellers. Nice work. Love the auto saw stop on your finger.
I've something else you can give a look at as for tools. A scraper. But not in the way many think of scrapers. These are like credit card sized sheet of metal with one edge that has a very slight burr edge that you can use to drag over wood. It won't remove near as much wood like sandpaper can but it will leave the wood surface almost glass smooth after so many passes. They're great for taking off old finishes and varnish from wood without the need for chemical strippers or worry about wrecking detail with sand paper. and since it's just a sheet of thin spring steel, if the edge wears too much and gets smooth, file flat and roll a new one with a screwdriver by dragging over one corner. I know the Holland&Holland gunmakers use them for their stocks as well as a few other of the finer makers.
I don't know if they sell it in Europe but I would try some brasso on the metal parts. I have never used it but I know people who have and they seem to like it.
Hey i was wondering if youd do a video or short on how you take care of youre froe. Like sharping it, if it needs oiled to keep rust off, things like that; im thinking about getting one but i wanna hear from someone experienced with it how to take care of it. Keep up the amazing content.
I recently bought an old pair of rusty saws and I wanted to fix them up. I know how to restore the metal already but I'm not sure what to do about the handles. They've got some small cracks in them and I'm not sure weather I should glue them or fill them in with wood filler. Any advice? I don't want the cracks to propagate, they're very nice handles and I want to keep the originals on there
When you sharpen a saw with the triangle file, do you do it at an angle? I have a couple of handsaws that are in desperate need of sharpening. Am I supposed to sharpen at an angle, or go with the flow of it?❤
you aught to try using electrolysis a few times when restoring an old piece of metal like this. I like it because it will remove the rust but goes easy on the metal that is left so to me it helps retain some of the history of the tool.
Where do you vind these? I can't of want one of those saws and restoring one would probably cheaper and more fun, but I don't know where to search for them (and other tools like those Stanley planes)
This message is to captain busy bollocks 😂I really need help, the traditional screws which hold the handle to the blade are simple to remove but I have a few saws with rivets (unsure on the specific term) but I have no clue how to remove them without damaging can u give me some advice I would really appreciate it thanks

It's very nice to see craftsmanship like this staying alive in the modern day. I hope you are well.
It’s certainly worth keeping alive! Woodcraft is truly a thing of beauty.

Great video!
Very good video, have you ever tried soaking the metal in Vinegar to remove rust it works great.
Awesome video man. Makes me want to go buy an old saw, fix it up and try to do dove tails haha :)
The Bob Ross of woodworking.
Hello 👋🏼 I was just wondering how I could get you to restore my grandpas old saw and/or drill? Could I send them to you or something?
I remember my first kiss from Lindsey Doyle 3:22
I don't know if they sell it in Europe but I would try some brasso on the metal parts. I have never used it but I know people who have and they seem to like it.
White vinegar, the 6% cleaning type, would dissolve the rust overnight. Try it, it’s amazing.
audio sounds good

Love the abundance of linseed oil on the window sill haha
What sort of file do you use? As in the size.. make .. noticed it was a Stanley..
Keep up the great wort👍👍👍
id love to see you make a churchwarden pipe or any sstyle hand carved pipe
I would totally watch a video of shop clean up or time lapse video

Those old handles are hard to beat, feels like shaking someone's hand!
What does the long brass piece do on top? Does it keep the saw straight and from flexing during cuts?
When you sharpen a saw with the triangle file, do you do it at an angle? I have a couple of handsaws that are in desperate need of sharpening. Am I supposed to sharpen at an angle, or go with the flow of it?❤
Would it be possible to carve a pistol grip handle for the other saw to make it more comfortable to work with?

They made split but screw drivers for those saws, keep an eye out for them they’re quite rare and expensive
👍
Where do you vind these? I can't of want one of those saws and restoring one would probably cheaper and more fun, but I don't know where to search for them (and other tools like those Stanley planes)
What brand of linseed oil do you use or does it matter?
Man I wish I could get my Vietnam tomahawk over there to you for a new handle
Love it
I’ve been wanting to ask about where’d you get all your knowledge like did you get trained or just picked it up as you go?
Is that a surfboard in Ireland?
Onya mate.
Your accent has changed so much. It's almost like you are putting on a more country accent.
I'll need to dig out dads n granpa old tools and start cleaning and sharpening.
If you record the noise from you filing the saw it would make for a great alarm
Looks like a tenon saw 😮
“Very so carefully” immediately cuts his finger
Lind Seed Oil or Lindsey Doyle?
Did he let you buy it?
Completely off topic - Who's the maker of your cap?
What part of Ireland are you from? Mayo? Sligo?
He’s near Cork.

WHY not make that shape (pistol grip) for your saw?
you didn't joint the teeth first before sharpening or set them afterwards...........
