    Michael, I felt so sorry for Esme. She wanted after you so much. It’s lovely to see such a loyal dog. I love watching your videos and am always glad Northern Ireland doesn’t get that much snow and ice.

      Hi Patricia - As I work from home so we see a lot of each other 😊 and we are both a bit lost when we are apart. I'm sure you don't get as much snow but you get a fair share of rain I bet! Best wishes Michael & Esme 🐶

    Hello Michael & Esme
    I came across your RUclips videos about a week ago & have been totally hooked ever since. I'm now just working my way through all your videos that you have posted, that part of Canada looks stunning. The more I watch the more it makes me want to sell up, leave England & move to Canada & experience the life you & Esme are.
    Keep posting & I will keep watching
    Thx.

      Hey Marc, so glad you are enjoying the videos! That's exactly what I did 13 years ago (3 years waiting for my application) and have been away for 10 years now. I have zero regrets! Very happy here 🇨🇦 It would be impossible to do what I do in England, sadly.

    Good show! Sometimes I sit here and try to mentally communicate to you to just really gun it and RAM through some of these places you tend to float willy-nilly, and then you did it right after you striped some bark from the downed birch tree. Neat. I'm at 20. 31, so I will keep watching now.

    I hope everything is ok with Esme paw. I had my first successful camping trip of the season last weekend. It was a bit cold at night, a little too cold for me still. The weather is still iffy here in Michigan snowing on and off. But we’re supposed to warm up next week to real spring temperatures. I have a big five day camping trip planned for the middle of May I’m really excited. I’m so happy the Argo is working out so well for you. That thing is a beast. Cheers until next time MICHAEL.

      Thanks Neil - I'm starting to use some of the more cinematic features of the DJI OSMO Pocket now they have patched the firmware to make it more useable. I also picked up a new drone this week (DJI Mavic Air) and I'm hoping to make more use of it with the smaller size and gesture control. The DJI Mavic Pro was great but it was difficult sometime to drive and film at the same time.

    Knife fit.
    When I was in Boy Scouts 50+ years ago, to get the grip of our own hands, we wrapped warmed wax around something flat then gently gripped it.
    Once it cooled, we had our own grip fingerprint.
    If it didn’t feel right, just do it again. Once it was right, we just traced it out on a split piece of wood.
    One side fit the palm of your hand and the other side and bottom fit your fingers as they wrap around the handle.

    I can't speak for the species of elm you mention, however, my one and ONLY experience with working with elm... caused me to swear at the stuff and determine I'll never work with it again. As you would sand it, slivers would rise. Sanding them down smooth, another one (in a different location) would rise. This continued (with every piece of it I was working with) until I finally pulled them free, used wood filler to fill the void, and finally painted the damned stuff. Oak, maple, purple heart... any of the other stuff I've worked with, was a joy to use. Elm... makes for good firewood in my book.
    You tarp should cover everything from strap to strap, including all of each carabiner. That way, if it rains, the water runs down the tree strap, and falls to the ground at the carabiner. The way you have it set up now, the rain could soak your gathered end of your hammock and wick up to soak you as well.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hey RatdogDRB - Ive heard similar experiences with Elm as it was commonly used in England before Dutch Elm disease killed a lot of the trees. The piece I have is a very nice burl and I will also need to fill some of the voids with some epoxy - maybe tinted with some color! Totally agree on the German half shelter tarp - if it rained I was screwed - surprisingly short 😄 worked well as a wind break but that's about it. As a general rule I avoid canvas for water repellency unless treated and prefer sil-nylon. Canvas is great for snow and ice however. Will you be heading out this spring for some camping? Best wishes Michael

    • @RatdogDRB
      @RatdogDRB 5 лет назад +1

      Good luck with the project. I hope it works better for you than I had to deal with on mine (years ago). LOL
      I do have a couple of trips planning. One will probably be to a camp ground (not wild camping). Another will be an Overland Rally in WA State in June. For at least one of them, I'll be bringing my ENO hammock stand to hang my hammock from (camp grounds often frown on hanging from trees). For the rally, haven't made up my mind on whether I'll be using the same rig (just a huge field w/o trees), or maybe my Teton cot/tent set-up. At least one more adventure to Montana to try and camp when I go back to get my Mule Deer mount from last fall's hunt. No date for that one yet, waiting on word from the taxidermist. I have a bunch of great gear to break-in, need to get into the woods more.
      Love the vids, always enjoy yours and Esme's antics in the field.

    Excellent vid. I plan on trying hammocks this season, first time since Boy Scouts. See how the old body likes it. Toying with Bridge Hammock idea, seems to be a flatter setup. If you have an opinion, i would love to hear it.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Richard - Outboard is coming soon! 😉 Hammocks are fun - Are you looking at the "Amok" hammock? There is a brilliant channel "shugemery" with shut that explains everything hammock. The biggest issue I have with hammocks is keeping the bottom warm. Ive switched to an under quilt and that really helps. An A-sym hammock allows you to sleep very flat also - and they are much cheaper than the "Amok". Let me know what you decide to buy! Sounds exciting!

    I was just thinking about the bar on the roll bar which you said you had painted, however, the paint keeps coming off due to your bungee cords. Just a suggestion... but maybe if plastic electrical tape was applied...either going right across in full length strips, or neatly going across on an angle and in a circular motion. Paul

    Michael, Every video I watch makes me want an Argo more. Believe you might be able to add two inch paddles to the tracks to get it to swim better, or an electric bow thruster on the back with an on/off switch on the steering bar. Also look into a buggie cargo net for the back. Velcro straps on the bar where you are loosing paint and pad eyes on the Argo. Unhook from the bottom of the net and flip it up over the bar to access gear. Yeah, you have me planning mine all the time. Appreciate the videos, generate lots of ideas and model shopping. Currently settling on a conquest with trailer, But will have to save longer due to it being pricey. Will need mine to work and play. Cheers😃

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Yea - I watched a ton of videos about the Argo before I bought one - they are one unique machine and have a special place in the outdoors. They are not the perfect machine but I'm happy I switch to mine from a SxS. The spring and summer will bring fishing trips testing out the amphibious capabilities. I have a 5HP Honda outboard and a 40 or 50lb electric but not sure which one to use yet. Ill be making the motor mount perhaps this week. Thanks for the ideas about the net and the hooks! Thats awesome - Ill look into that!

    • @outsideinalaskahawaii5987
      @outsideinalaskahawaii5987 5 лет назад

      Net is about $20 and can find it in the store section with ratchet straps. Recommend go with the Honda as same fuel as Argo less oil and a long handle paddle for short maneuvers and positioning, you should have a paddle in any boat anyway (2 Piece takedown one). Batteries too heavy for the electric and don't think you want to beef up an alternator and run the main engine to ensure power to the electric one. You'll kill your cranking battery in an hour working a trolling motor from it. Can you push start an Argo in the water or on land? I ran a Bass boat for years. Carried two group 27s to power the trolling motor/electronics, and one just to crank over the 150hp engine. And that was a 20' long boat. My plan is to use my Argo like a boat as well, not just for water crossings. So, I will add a second bilge pump, (as whatever the one is you have is actually rated half if the rise is 3' or more to get the water out & over the side, so a 500 is really 250 gpm), two bow thrusters (electric) that run when the engine is on to speed up transit to the fishing spots, long paddle, and emergency jump starter in a WP bag. The jump starters they have fit in your hand and will turnover your truck.

    Regarding the Argo rollbar, even powder coat will wear eventually. Maybe make some small padeyes out of flat bar and weld them on in several spots to attach bungees, etc. to. Also, some spray can truck bed liner might hold up a little better than regular paint.

    Interesting about the swimming capabilities of your Argo. I run an 8x8 Conquest with the older 10" Runamuck tires but I tend to use it mostly on swamp & bush-trash. Last year I took it to North of Thunder bay where we hunt moose with rubber tracks on but later in the fall I took it out again for deer season without tracks because I find tracks such a harsh ride. I am heading out up North for Moose again at the end of the week & had been hoping to use it more on open water this year without tracks so I did some tests at the weekend on a local lake & to get the "hang of swimming" properly but it just plain sucks on water & barely moves...not what I was expecting! So much so I think I need an outboard motor for water work with no time left to set this up. What is your 6x6 like with just wheels swimming in open water?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      To be honest I have not done much water work with it as I find the machine tippy with the frame I made for it. Maybe I'm over concerned and Argo's are tippy but I need to make some changes before I want to do come open water travel and feel confident. I also made an outboard mount for the back of the Argo. Might have to wait for next year now 🤔 I much prefer the wheels to tracks and I can pretty much get anywhere with them - until the snow comes.

    I am sure you are finding that tracks don't propel in water very good. In fact they suck. We have found the 18 inch rubber super tracks barely do anything in water as well and the secret to them is really low track speed. Often times it is better to run backwards because of the engine weight being up front. Also, if you are coming out of a water crossing with a cut bank, you can climb out easier going backwards. There are a couple lakes here in Alaska we like to fish in during the summers. I usually take the tracks off and run open wheel because the tires are better for swimming. I also use a small long shaft outboard.
    Enjoy the videos though.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      Hi The Yeti - Well spotted. The rock piles are from when the original settlers who cleared the forest for cattle or crops. They remove the trees and plough the land, removing the rocks to a corner of the field. You see them around sometimes on old farming areas. This area has not been farmed or used for cattle for a very long time so the rocks pile is pretty old!
