Abashiri Prison in the Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan opened during the Meiji era in 1890.
It was one of the new prisons built to accomodate the growing number of criminals following the abolition of the death penalty in 1882.
In winter it is a bitterly cold place, with the local lake freezing over and thick fog regularly engulfing the area.
In its entire history, only one man has ever escaped- --- and that was Yoshie Shiratori .

A life imprisonment is not actually a life sentence, you can get paroled for good behaviour. I’m pretty sure you have to serve a certain amount of time until you can be paroled, so the 3 years added were basically extra 3 years until you’re able to be paroled.

It always baffles me that there are people smart enough to escape from high security prisons, yet they can't figure out how to lay low once they're out, especially those who lived in times where cameras, ID and fingerprinting weren't even common place yet.
Because he didn't mind staying in prison and serving his sentence as long as the guards treated him properly.
"Laying low" your entire life basically means being a dirt poor hobo since you can't get a job, can't get government earnings, can't get anything.
The last time he was caught was actually because he cried that a police officer gave him a cigarette and admitted it himself, since Japan deffo didn't care him after the war was over.
Spent most of his life inside bars,he was more used to live in a prison than he was living outside! For someone that lived for a long time in a prison, his social skills were totally gone!
Prison cell: *has a slight cold*
Shiratori: "Aight, Imma head out."
“Three years were added to his sentence of life imprisonment”
*ah yes, lock up the corpse*
Actually no, A life sentence can actually mean they're sentenced for life yes , but some sentences are patrolled for good behavior, back then in Japan's legal system it was about 45 years, now its 53, so A Life Sentence can mean more, for a more detailed description, i would look into kento bento's follow up about this man.
"the court recognized that in all four of his prison escapes and recaptures, he never once used violence in any way."
Except... for that farmer he stabbed to death?
@@Lukethomas2015 yeah, a "life sentence" in America is a set number of years, not actually for the person's whole life.
That's why sometimes, instead of being sentenced to life, you'll see someone get a sentence of like 300 years, usually for numerous, heinous crimes. Those kinds of sentences are absolutely for life.

i think they meant that in the act of escaping, he never used violence
The farmer attacked Shiratori first. Shiratori was caught stealing a tomato before the Sapporo escape.
LEX Laisney if the farmer tries to kill him it’s only natural that he wants to live and defend himself. I don’t know if that’s what happened but if you trap an animal in a corner it will fight you till death but if you give it a chance to run most will flee.
He didn't use violence he just stabbed a man
This man needs a movie about him.
Or is there already one already that I don’t know about?

Life sentences are not necessarily "your entire life." They do have a time limit, that's why some people are given multiple life sentences.
Japan: no death penalty
Manchuria: -_- ........
Get to 69 likes just because!
In germany life imprisonment for example means 25 years, also it isnt uncommon to add years to a sentence like in america where you can get sentenced for hundreds of years so, i believe it had to do so you cant pardoned for you crimes or something in that lines to get out early.
It means once your dead then your body will be returned for the next 3 years
"3 years added to his life sentence"
Why do I just imagine someone dieing in prison and they just leave the corpse in there for 3 more years
Can’t imagine the guys sentenced to 1000 years.
@@SharkyMcSnarkface im pretty sure back in the older eras sentences were something like that.
No, depending on how many years a life sentence is in the country they will have to serve it and if it gets added a few more years they also need to serve in prison on those years until they get a parole. Let's say a country's life sentence is about 20 years if another 3 years is added his total prison time would be 23 years
"Never used violence in any way.." Except when that guy died lol
They somewhat messed up what actually happened in the video.
In reality, he was trying to steal some tomatoes from a farm when he was caught by the farmer, who then attacked him, resulting in him killing the farmer in self-defence.
It also wasn't part of an escape attempt, but instead something that happened while he was on the run. They were referring to him not using violence during his escapes.

And the Japanese in WW2 gave people NO human rights.
6:40 this is a terribly incorrect explanation.
Salt water accelerates corrosion, because corrosion is a galvanic process, and electrons move more easily through salt water. The salt doesn't "react violently" with the iron. It doesn't react at all. It's the oxygen and water that causes the corrosion, the salt just accelerates it by helping the electrons move when electrons are swapped between the oxygen and the iron.
Well, it's true but you can't explain galvanic process in a simplified history video so it is negligible imo

And then he killed someone over food

@@michael9433 he got the death penalty for it. It also wasn't murder. He was starving and killed the farmer unintentionally when the farmer attacked. The farmer had every right to attack because he thought he was a local thief.

Haha this was a really good one, its inspiring to see a man crave freedom so much to go through this crazy stuff
He didn't mind prison, the only reason he escaped was because he was tortured so much. In Abashiri Prison, he was the only man to EVER escape Abashiri prison, even for Yoshie Shiratori, this was to much. In the stiff cold he could barely do anything. Abashiri prison was the northmost prison in all of Japan. In his solitary confinement room made just for him, he had 6 guards watching him 24/7, on all the time they reinforced the openings, doors, roof, and walls they forgot to reinforce the floor and this is how he got out of a place no man has every escaped. One day when he was sitting on a bench, a policeman sat next to him. He spiked up a conversation while thinking how to get away without being suspicious.
Suddenly the policeman offered him a cigarette, back in those days cigarettes were expensive luxury items. This brought tears to his eyes, so he gave in and told the policeman his real name, of course he was arrested again but he got what he wanted he was transported to a warmer prison, even the guards there were nice to him. 20 years later he was free to go.
“And he was sentenced to 3 more years by life in prison”
Wait isn’t that impossible
As useless as pouring a glass of water in the ocean 💀
This would make a good movie
