  • This video presents the method of calculating the elastic modulus in the transverse direction of a unidirectional continuous fibre composite. I also present the understanding of strength of fibre composites and method to calculate strength of a composite in different directions relative to the longitudinal. Some aspects of laminated composites are also presented.

    How equal will the elastic moduli be obtained using the direct tension or compression method and ultrasonic bulk wave through transmission measurements?

    My project is to make composite from natural fiber and bio degradable composite. I confused that which natural fiber and biodegradable matrix should I choose to continue my project. Please suggest me!

      Among natural fibres, bamboo or hemp fibres can be used. Both are fast growing plants. Hard to find biodegradable matrix but we could use recycled thermoplastics or epoxy. They are cheap and quite harmless to the environment.

    Please sir described the Upper & lower bounds on apparent young’s modulus.

      Thanks for asking. In the transverse direction of the fibre, Halpin-Tsai model is the upper bound, as also computed by the FE analysis. The analysis I presented in the beginning of the video gives value lower than that of Halpin-Tsai model. We could take these two analyses as the upper and lower values. I am not aware of any other model for upper and lower bound for the transverse. I appreciate your asking question! 👍

    Sir, Please discribed the Hashin and Shtrikman upper and lower bounds(H-S model) .

      H-S model is used for isotropic and multiphase composites, used in minerology etc.. In polymer composites generally we do not use H-S model, however, this model has been compared with Halpin-Tsai model. I request you to do your own study for this model. Thanks 👍

      @@engineeringmaterials-tribo5142 What book would you recommend learning composite material for an undergraduate? and which book was one with RJ Crawford, in our syllabus we have the mechanics of composites with their design as well

    Sir, can you please explain calculation of ultimate strength for metal matrix composite reinforced with ceramic particles

    • @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142
      @engineeringmaterials-tribo5142  3 года назад

      Particulate reinforcement is generally not very effective compared to the long fibre ones. However, particulate and short-fibre composites are very useful from manufacturing angle. I would like to mention few references (one is ours) for analytical and FE modeling of such composites.
      Analytical (Harpin-Tsai work): onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/pen.760160512
      FE modeling:
      www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0263822305001856
      onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/pc.25890
      These analyses and models are for different aspect ratios of the fibre and for particulate, the aspect ratio can be taken as one. You can find necessary information from these papers.
      I hope the above helps. Thanks for asking ✔👍
