Can we just appreciate the raw speed of Anakin's podracer? He started FOURTEEN seconds after everyone else, and immediately caught up. There is no reason the race should have been as close as it was.
There's slipstream yeah, but more importantly the catchup and quick passes are during the tight corners and canyons. Anakin's light maneuverable podracer is much faster there, but the larger racers (particularly Sebulba's Plug-F Mammoth) were faster in a straight line, and we can see that in the home stretch.
Can I just point out how unbelievably fast his pod would have to be? He stalled for like 10 seconds, and still reached top position before the halfway point..

When I was a kid.. I didnt know what the bad guy had broken in Anakin's pod racer.. might be something important.. when I was an Adult now I realize it's a capacitor.. like for single phase motor to it run like a 3 phase without having a 3rd source of power.. when it fell it turned to single phase, thus making the motor vibrate and won't spin because it doesn't know which direction it would rotate to and starting to overheat because of friction.. then he made the motors into series and share the last capacitor in order to make the broken motor to run.. by overdrive even for a short while.. making them both run just to finish the race.. sorry for being a nerd
That actually makes Anakin's win far more impressive. I know it's said that he built his racer, but knowing how to temporarily fix such an issue just shows that he genuinely knows his stuff.
You underestimate people's desire for thrills. There are multiple amateur racing series where the prize for winning is a friendly handshake, and people keep signing up for them. And then there is the Isle of Man TT, a modern competition in a modern, first world, industrialized nation, where at least one competitor dies every year. And they have so many people signing up they have to turn people away.
Also only 1 out of 18 racers were confirmed killed, that being the guy who crashes in the cave, the others are canonically alive, so much fewer casualties than 25%
You obviously forgot the Roman Gladiators, they never ran out of participants for centuries. granted they also used slaves, but still, it lasted a long time.

The lightsaber choreography at the time was a massive improvement over the original trilogy, though it was admittedly far more flashy and spectacular than would be practical in actual blade-based combat (original trilogy was less flashy, more realistic). The pod racing added an exciting element derived from chariot racing reminiscent of Ben Hur, and spawned one of the greatest racing games ever made for the Nintendo 64. Aside from that, the movie is widely held in very poor esteem, and marks the beginning of the end of George Lucas' credibility as series creator.
Pretty late comment but The Phantom Menace still used a huge amount of practical effects that people just disregard because of "muh prequels bad CGI haha funny". That's why scenes like this hold up so well
There is only very minimal usage of CGI here. This is mostly Old School practical model work and camera tricks. But its so good, you think its CGI. TPM is a fucking good film and I will fight anyone who disagrees

Anikin's engine making smoke is actually probably the biggest advantage he had, other than skill since he could blinded bad guy with the smoke,causing bad guy to crash

Then, as technology allowed for the creation of cultures and societies, art began to reflect that change and it evolved along with it. By the Ancient Greeks and Romans, art had become a more advanced version of the Stone and Bronze Age arts. Better drawings, paintings, and the addition of mosaics. Sculptures eventually shifted from stylistic expression to naturalistic representation. Still accessible to everyone, yet more nuanced and complex. After the fall of Rome art stagnated and didn't change very much for nearly a millennium. Early Christian art dominated for the most part, consisting of murals and frescos and simple statues. All of which were based on the Ancient styles. Romanesque and Gothic art also built upon these precedents. This all changed when the Renaissance attacked. A cultural explosion changed the art world forever; arguably starting with the Italian artist, Giotto. He began using techniques like foreshortening and linear perspective so that the material world could be represented as it appeared to us. A callback to the naturalistic stylings of the Greeks. While some particularly great memes do still stick around much like the masterpieces of art in the past, new memes are created every day, every few hours. New movements of memes are being created all the time. Anti-memes. Dank memes. Abstract memes. Wholesome memes. Surreal memes. Deep fried memes. Nuked memes. Even black hole memes, time travel, and dimensional memes are now a reality. What's going to happen next? A return to the classics? A new format so brilliant it steals all our hearts and then starts a whole new movement? I'm excited for the future of memes.

This makes me remember that REALY old Pod Racer game for the N64. Despite not being very good at the game at the time, I had quite a lot of fun customizing my Pod Racer...
The real issue is that the exhaust of the engines is... fucking hot. You'd basically boil alive in the chariot. Also the whole design isn't technically feasible without repulsorlifts keeping the chariot and the engines off the ground.

You're faster when you don't have to fight to overtake, same as in car racing. You can make up for a gap if the people in front of you are fighting.

No longer was it about simply depicting the world around us, it was about prompting the viewer to consider new thoughts and ideas. Urging them to look past the image and think deeper about meaning and context. Pushing the boundaries of what art could be. The Baroque to Impressionism era spanned roughly 300 years. Compare that to the thousands of years between archaic art and the Renaissance. It was a huge explosion of self expression. Finally, in the mid to late 19th century starting with Post-Impressionism, Modern art emerged. This movement focused on self-consciousness, self-reference, introspection, existentialism, and even nihilism. I'm talking Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Abstract Expressionism, and Surrealism to name the most well known. These styles changed what art could be. They were no longer about depicting life as is, or layering a painting with hidden motifs for only the privileged to understand, they were in and of themselves absurd. Abstract shapes, aggressive lines and colors, nonsensical dreamscapes. But it didn't stop there. Post-modernism. Pushing art to the limit of its potential. Pop art, Conceptual art, Minimalism, Fluxus, Installation art, Lowbrow art, Performance art, Digital art, Earth art. These movements are about skepticism, irony, rejecting grand narratives and reason and instead embracing the idea that knowledge and truth are the result of social, historical, and political discourse and subsequently are a subjective, social construct. It's irreverent and self-referential. It's avant-garde pushed to 11. But what's next? Post-postmodernism? Metamodernism? Hypermodernity? Who knows? Only time will tell. This is where memes are headed. They started off slow but have picked up so much momentum they're evolving at an exponential pace. They used to hang around for a couple years at most. Then it turned to months. Then maybe only one month. Suddenly it was a week tops. While some particularly great memes do still stick around much like the masterpieces of art in the past, new memes are created every day, every few hours. New movements of memes are being created all the time. Anti-memes. Dank memes. Abstract memes. Wholesome memes. Surreal memes. Deep fried memes. Nuked memes. Even black hole memes, time travel, and dimensional memes are now a reality. What's going to happen next? A return to the classics? A new format so brilliant it steals all our hearts and then starts a whole new movement? I'm excited for the future of memes.

The real issue is that the exhaust of the engines is... fucking hot. You'd basically boil alive in the chariot. Also the whole design isn't technically feasible without repulsorlifts keeping the chariot and the engines off the ground.
