  • The largest point of the video is to look at the communities reaction to Kasumi's volatile existence, the dev's reaction to the community, and subsequently, the communities reaction to the dev's reaction. This is most certainly not a Kasumi hate piece, as I do believe she is not nearly as volatile as most might lead you to assume.
    Anyway, enjoy my ramble about Kasumi, what makes her 'overpowered', fun, annoying, dominating, but most importantly, hated to hell and back.
    Admittedly this was a pretty impulsive video as if it weren't obvious lol. For certain I still think there are points worthy of discussion somewhere in here, though for sure some points were more thought through than others, so my apologies for that. In the end I think it came out alright ❤️
    I keep forgetting why exactly I made this video, but I fully edited it at some point, so, I guess I should upload it, huh.

      huh?? 2:28 how is it auto aim when you have to stare at the characters model to attack them? It's not like any of these abilities because with these they shoot the character without you looking at them

      She could make ghost illusions and make herself invisible/ethereal like Seris getaway and her she could have a talent where they can chase and fear if someone gets into the range of them

      Yeah they should have done that instead of making her a DPS. They also should make her ult a literal FNAF style jump scare that fears after the animation. Not too strong but it's fun

    the idea of having kasumi spread 10 stacks across different players sounds like a very interesting playstyle that would give some more depth to her playstyle. this video was entertaining and very interesting :)

    As someone with over 6000 hours across multiple online fps games I have to say that the argument of "just get good" is not applicable to this situation because this champion is anti-mobility which is anti-skill which is anti-fun and thus she tilts people more easily than anyone else. Kasumi's design could be described as EvilMojo being tone deaf for years to peoples dislike of Lian for her auto-aiming abilities granting free kills and then taking that aspect of Lian and making it the entire kit of a new champion. People can say hindsight 20/20 but I think this is a mistake that the developers should have seen coming, again because of the community's overall sentiment towards similar features that lowered the skill floor in a game where the oversized hitboxes leftover from the game's inception are regularly memed over. In order for the argument "just get good" to apply here the auto-aiming mechanic would have to not be present, you can't tell a master Evie or VII player to "just get good" whenever their hyper mobility is ignored and countered by it. You can't simply outplay a Kasumi with strafing and positioning because she maxes nimble out the gate and plays as a flank, it's the same issue whereby snipers existing in a strong state force players to hide behind walls and stop enjoying the experience since their focus has to be on hiding from the sniper most of the game. Perhaps if you were playing some bollocks like the over buffed Inara that has 50% damage reduction with plenty of uptime and just hold WM1 into a Kasumi then maybe you could counter her with an equally low skill tactic but that is not "getting good" it's just exploiting low skill floors that can match that of Kasumi's which is the lowest of all champions. There's a concept of healthy vs unhealthy mechanics and it should be considered by players in a debate around balance pretty much always, defending unhealthy mechanics is not a great idea because you squander the competitive integrity of the game which is something that Paladins already struggles with when compared to Overwatch at least when it comes to landing shots on opponents since OW has much tighter hitboxes more suited to this genre of games. Whilst you're right that Kasumi has been the target of much hate, it is not fair to state that it is petty or unwarranted since Kasumi is an outlier that doesn't function with the same rules as almost all other champions do. There is no reason for players to be bullied or harassed for playing a video game, that part is petty and toxic I'll give you that. Anyway content for the sake of content is likely to bring more problems than it solves if careful thought is not taken to ask if it is right for the type of game and if it is right for the type of audience receiving the content. Usually auto-battling systems are seen in single player games where the combat is PvE so there are no real players to upset on the other end of this system. People seek out specific experiences when choosing what game to play, more casual gamers will seek out games with these convenience features that allow for relaxation and farming for resources and progression, whereas more competitive gamers will seek out games without those types of systems because it degrades their sense of accomplishment taking down opponents stifling morale and affecting motivation to continue with that game whenever their skill no longer matters due to lowered skill floors and abilities that counter what made the game initially enjoyable and attractive to them. For these reasons I shan't make excuses for Kasumi's poorly designed kit to remain in Paladins and as I said the moment I first laid eyes on her, she cannot be balanced as she is, the only option that would satisfy almost everyone is to make everything that is auto-aiming to be either hitscan or projectile. Once Kasumi requires proper input from players, meaning a similar level of focus and effort that all other champions require, then she will be able to exist in a strong state whilst simultaneously perceived as fair and balanced by the community at large.

      I brought up the whole "get good" stuff more to respond to the preemptive idea of folks telling Kasumi players to just get used to the emergence balance change, and kind of to push the rather absurd idea of, I'll "get good" with Kasumi's change and become the best tracker in the world, if everyone who would tell me to would stop complaining about her and hating Kasumi players to the toxic extent that they do, and instead actually attempt to "get good" as well, and actually attempt to exploit her weaknesses instead of just complaining. I knew neither of those things were ever going to happen, and I more just wanted to push how absurd both sides of the "get good" spectrum by throwing the idea of getting good, in a humourous way, back at the same folks who might be unreasonably saying it to me based on my issue with the Kasumi change. My intent was to make fun of the idea rather than push for it, but listening back to that portion of the video, I can certainly see how it could be misinterpreted, so that's my bad for sure. It wasn't my main point of the video, so I likely looked it over a bit prematurely. Just wanted to clear that up in particular. I didn't intend to make an unrealistic demand, as I do generally think her design needs a rework, or at least plenty of tweaks for sure. Hopefully that makes my intent a little more clear, I don't fully agree with some things you said here, but I appreciate the discussion and criticism nonetheless

      No masters flank has ever complained about kasumi being too good. VII and Evie can easily poke Kasumi out. Kasumi is only killing either of them if they cluelessly int.

    i kinda felt similar with the hate when opression nessa was a thing. i just enjoyed playing her with steady aim or the old eagle eye but due to the hate people had towards opression nessa i got bullied in nearly every casual match even (even tho i wasnt even playing the talent)

    This was a good video to see in my recommended and I can see why there's some argument where Kasumi isn't bad. While there were people who loved the primary fire nerf, many of us knew this wasn't gonna do anything to actually fix her. The Paladins community have people that hate auto aim but auto aim isn't all that bad, the issue is her main source of dmg BEING auto aim, with Lian you have to combo your abilities at least to have "Auto-Aim" but with Kasumi, it's just "Hold Left-Click." The best way to fix her tbh is just by making the primary work like a normal hitscan where it shoots even if there's no one there with ammo. Or making her a projectile champion that shoots nails into the target to "mark" them.

      Totally agree. I wish there was a way to make her autoaim primary work, I find it pretty wacky and fun, but it's just way too polarizing. At this point especially with the change to the autoaim, I gotta think the best choice of action is to rework her primary

    Give her a reload, put the needles in the doll and she throws them. I like the "bombs" and make them debuff (slow, revealing, whatever)

    I saw too many problems with Kasumi
    1) her movement ability doesn't help you escape from your opponents and she's barely fast enough to catch up with a fleeing enemy.
    2) that their basic shots are very slow, while you are accumulating the curse charges you will have already eaten all the damage and hatred of the other team. Not to mention, they reworked just the most useful talent he had (Empowered Curse) which increased attack rate with basics.
    3) autoaim doesn't allow you to shoot opponents who have their bodies half covered, it happened to me on the Bazaar map for example.
    4) I don't see any use for the ultimate ability either, it's not like "wow what damage I can't do anything". Against a tank it hardly works, against the rest of the characters, if the support attends it quickly, it is easy to counteract its effect. If the ultimate had more utility such as Injuring, Slowing or Stunning opponents to make it useful for the team, I would be more convinced.
    5) The character is weak against champions that have deployables because the autoaim will make you aim at anything instead of hitting your true opponent making people dizzy, and against shields it's a joke
    f) her deployable dolls are also a joke, it's just a matter of avoiding them, if the dolls explode and cause the already basic Fear effect, it would be a very useful ability forcing the enemy to buy Resilence, Kasumi being a character that should be had in your composition or ban it in rankeds because it would be to have a maldamba but in the Damage class.
    6) She doesn't even have the relevance that she needed in the lore, she's just a vengeful spirit, with no other motivation, and no more is known about her history. We don't know if she wanted to join the Resistance now led by Zhin or if she would go about her business causing havoc in the kingdom, just because she is a ghost, without shame or glory.
    7) the only solution I see for Kasumi is to completely rework her ,In particular, that they take away the auto-aim, it's annoying, that it's the player who decides what or who to shoot, I would leave the right click as it is with the damage somewhat nerfed, that the deployable wrists give the basic Fear effect, and rework the escape or give it more utility, I don't know, that it also scares the opponent who shoots at a certain radius making it a skill to take into account and that the enemy thinks twice because it could be compromised when it is vulnerable under the effects of Fear.
    What do you think? I do want the character to improve because I like his concept of being the Yokai of Paladins but we must admit that the character is poorly planned.

      Yeah, I find a few of the most recent champions have often been designed around a specific gimmick alongside some slightly uncreative abilities, with Kasumi being designed with the gimmick of being the "autoaim character". I feel most of her abilities are pretty basic as a result, but with some autoaim features slapped on to seem all fresh and new, alongside her movement ability just kinda being the quintessential 'ooo spooky ghost' ability lol. Some champs designed in such a way, with simple abilities centralized around a gimmick, honestly can be pretty fun, but I feel the main problem with Kasumi's design is that 'autoaim' itself is not a great gimmick. Like, it just puts her in a really awkward spot when trying to think of ways to balance her. Any autoaim is obviously REALLY good fundamentally, so she would always need a lack of something else fundamentally important to offset how powerful it is. Plus, any autoaim ability is really frustrating for players to deal with, so if Kasumi's any good at all meta-wise, say, mid-tier or higher, she'll just end up being super frustrating for everyone. In her current form, I do worry that she really doesn't fit well alongside the rest of the champs because she almost needs to be an unviable character for people to even accept her lol. And cause autoaim as her gimmick is just so damn centralizing. Like, in her current state, if she was balanced, she'd be too frustrating, straight up, so the only thing to do (aside from re-work her, which going off of Paladins history, I doubt they'd do lol) would just be to make her a weak character. That's something I'd honestly be fine with (as someone who would still play her if she was weak), Skye's pretty similar, always kinda lounging in the low-tier abyss, but Skye's actually carved out a niche or two over time which is pretty dope, maybe that's something Kasumi could end up doing to. BUT, if your character design requires them to be very weak for the community to NOT hate them, there's obviously a problem with the design lmao.
      So yeah, it's tricky, I don't know if there's a real great way to balance her kit as it is. Maybe she just needs to be less centralized on the autoaim stuff, like, give her some other qualities that make her unique, and expound upon those, idk. Either that, or just allow her to languish as a weak character like Skye has for so long lol. At least then she'd still have the rather estranged honour of being the only true autoaim character, which seems to be what they were going for to begin with.
      These are just my scattered thoughts in the moment, kind of rambly lol but oh well. I really do want to see Kasumi do well too, I mean like said in the video I honestly find her quite fun, but autoaim is just too good of a tool, ironically it holds her back, it needs tweaks, somehow lol. I wish I had more ideas, but as is I'm kinda stumped. But yeah, a rework would probably be the best choice in my opinion if she wants to be even slightly viable without being inherently frustrating as well, even if I don't think it's gonna happen any time soon.

      @@MrMinimicrobe In my experience, a character with autoaim does not seem so comfortable to me, and yes, coming from me, a player with the Pyro syndrome of the W+M1 with Fernando and who has zero aim, the autoaim would come in handy but it is not even Even in my case, it is too uncomfortable or strange, something that one does not get used to in 5 games, but the way of shooting seems very disastrous to me, it is very slow, and the range it has is ridiculously short for a character of his role. A Tyra, a Viktor, a Cassie, can already shoot you from a considerable distance even if the damage is low, but with Kasumi you are forced to be in combat at close / medium range, that would be more work from a flank even. That the autoaim is directed towards the deployables and not the real enemy, is what bothers me the most, to me and many other players. I hope that one day they will improve it, with better planning, because I am already seeing that Kasumi will come to occupy the position that Vivian and Skye had in the previous meta, I dare say that Skye and Vivian are better in the tiers of the current meta, Skye was given her deserved buff and Vivian situationally can be a nuisance, and Kasumi will be ranked lowest on all tier lists

    I'm one of the few people who enjoy using Kasumi,but that's mainly due to past reasons like she gives me Day 1 Torvald memories as I used to main that guy back in his early days and yes,for people who don't know, Torvald used to have a much more different kit than now alongside an auto-aim primary fire like Kasumi has now.
    And she is the only champion that has the Disarming status effect like old Torvald used to have back in the ancient days. And another reason is that she gives me flashbacks to old Grohk in terms of how terrible she is lol.
    Again,unlike now where Grohk is mostly a viable pick,he was a joke in 2016 and early 2017,he was even worse than Skye,worse heals than Ying,pitiful dmg,only one totem and you couldn't placed it wherever you wanted it and his ultimate lasted way too short and couldn't fly in it back then.
    Frankly Kasumi's biggest counter is Vivian,another champion that most of the community hates,her shield and her drones (both F and E keys ) destroy her and also snipers do too. She is the anti flank champion,but even then,if a good flanker knows how to throw of Kasumi's aim-lock thingy,they can kill her relatively easily.
    The point where you mention that people ignore her and pretend that her and the players who play her don't exist is so true lol,but at least Idc about it that much. Frankly me and my friend have fun just playing casually with our mains (Kasumi+Vivian is a combo you don't want to deal with) and if someone gets mad at us for picking them,we don't care since it's casual.
    To your point where people attack others for maining certain character in any video game is frankly pathetic and like you said,everyone has subjective views on the term fun.
    In terms of changes,I would prefer if she was more of a trap character and buffing her Disarm effect,for those who are crying about the Disarm effect,Resilience exists buddy.
    Her second talent should be reworked a bit,instead of fearing enemies who activate a trap,it should Disarm them instead.
    TLDR: Old Torvald and Old Grohk player mains Kasumi and enjoys duoing in casuals with his vivian main friend.

      Wdym Skye was terrible? I was a Skye main around that time (when Torv was added) and I kicked ass. She's never come back to her former glory imho, although I admit I've had huge breaks from this godforsaken game.

    While I despise having to play against Kasumi, something that's nice about this game is that the strange and abstract design of everyone's kits and weapons is guaranteed to appeal to someone so no matter how meta some characters may be, there's going to be enough variety that an occasional annoying outlier like Kasumi or, god forbid, a console Talus, it most likely won't be constant and the times you do see them it's just someone trying to enjoy their time. Whether it's someone looking for a quick win or trying out someone hidden in the depths of their roster, the main goal is to have fun, which Kaumi is definitely fun to play as.
    Anyway screw Kasumi I hope she gets removed from the game and the people who use her go homeless

    In my opinion the best change to her would be to change her primary fire from stabbing doll to just throwing this nails and than she could use her secondary fire, so everything would be the same but her bubble range and autoaim would disapire and she would get reloading.

    I just started playing Paladins again recently. i started playing years ago but hadn't played in a while, but i decided to come back on pc to save my account from deletion, (i used to play on my switch) anyway, i've been maining Kasumi since i started again, mainly because i love ghost characters but also her Q can be really fun when it works, it feels very ghostly, but i really don't think she's that strong, am mean pretty much all flanks can kill her so easily, the only times i win fights against flanks is when i outsmart them, plus all the characters that can cleanse her curse stacks, like Zhin, Koga, Moji, etc are mostly Flanks, which just makes fighting them even harder. honestly, her damage is just really low, and you pretty much need to have a few stacks of curse on an enemy before you can consider 1v1ing them. i just play casually, though, maybe with a well coordinated team it's completely different.

      I have also recently started playing paladins again, saw and picked her for basically the same reason as you. I like to describe her as a weeping angel: You can only do dmg when they are either not focussing you(because everyone can melt you in .35 seconds) or if you are in a 1v1, and even then I get mostly wiped out by another flank with twice the attack speed and dmg (looking at u androxus). And if u want to get away, guess what you move 5meters and always end up with like sub 200hp. I still find her fun to play but its frustrating.

      @@sleepy_belgian3149 yeah, i didn't even realize she got a damage reduction while using her body and soul ability (because it it actually doesn't tell you that on the skill) but now that i know that, it's not so bad, still better to use it while behind cover though. also her range feels too short, other damages like Viktor and Lian can just kill you from across the point while you literally can't do anything to them.

    Yeah, I got to agree with you and her awkwardness post primary nerfs and you definitely word is perfectly especially with the examples you gave.
    Man she feels weird to use now. The holding down I feel like would have been fine but I just hate the god damn auto aim cone radius because holding down and having a the doll so damage is pretty much any hitscan champion.
    Now she feels like a hybrid of a projectile and hitscan champion which is weird (Now that I think about about, weird but unique. Ok, I'mma main her now. I like unique)

    Nah, this isn't autoaim, gamers be gravely exaggerating and crying over nothing, per usual. We can't keep pushing back against more unique mechanics and gamestyles because some knuckleheads can't be bothered to learn how to counter them and cry it's unfair while it's actually their own skill issue - it was exactly the same with Skye back in 2015/6 and back then EM caved too.
    You have to look at the enemy to use the doll, if you stop looking before you finish performing your primary shots or savage tear nothing happens - which I'd argue is more limiting that a lot of other weapons and abilities in this game because it takes a moment for Kasumi to finish her animation, whereas on other champions usually you only need a split second to shoot and you can go back behind cover, you get the frame around enemy because of limited range, so you know when your "shots" become viable. Otherwise it's impossible to use. It's completely different to Lex and Lian where you don't even need to have the enemy on the screen to hit them - that's the definition of autoaim. Grohk's pinball is more akin to Saati's rickochet in mechanics (you gotta land the initial shot but what happens afterwards is pretty much out of your hands), but also tricky, circumstantial (useless against shields or in 1v1 situations) and difficult to use against tiny characters - because it does require aim.
    We should look at Kasumi's doll more like Jenos' or Omen's grip - is it autoaim if those abilities have very limited range? On the other hand Khan's ult has no range so it's fair he doesn't have any "autoaim" because he doesn't need it to successfully use his ult.

      I just played a couple of matches with Kasumi. Half of my shots didn't go through even tho I aimed them right, because the enemy was using a mobility ability at the moment between the doll animation started and my shot actually went through. This is no autoaim my friend.

    i play on controller so playing her hurts my wrists and joints even more now, i always have trouble playing shooter games/competitive games with my bad wrists so this “nerf” really sucks for me, i’m still gonna play her but probably less to give my wrists a breather LOL

    Ah, i must have missed out on reading about the emergence nerf. That explains why she felt so god awful last time i tried to play as her.
    The hate for her is a bit frustrating too. Any half decent player could likely play a single game as her to glance at her weakness and pick her apart effortlessly. She is basically hard countered by the entire damage category or anyone with shields or deployables.

In the video I was referring to it in a pretty old state just after Maeve was released, where it would remove all cc and whatnot, which was pretty powerful at the time alongside her kit. It was the bane of support's existence from what I recall until that effect was bopped out of existence

    It is infuriating to play after the change. It feels and it is inconsistent with the primary fire. One guy can be very low hp and you half hp and still lose because for 50 milliseconds you didn't track so you didn't hit. And one more thing is when you are using haunted grounds and you teleport to your trap when activated there is an annoying window of time in which you can get killed. Sometimes even, you teleport but you still die. This doesn't nerf her really. Its the same annoyance you get when the second you use the ult (when the animation for it starts) you die and then you lose it. Kasumi isn't broken. Just rush with at least 2 players at her because she does not have mobility and the primary fire is janky, switching form player to player, and she's dead.

    I play pretty casually so kasumi sucks to play as and against, but what i really hate is her design. Her lore and character model, voicelines, art etc all feel like someone’s bad OC. It’s silly to get pissed over immersion-breaking character design, especially since EM has disregarded any semblance of a defined artstyle long ago, but kasumi, with her edginess and “special OC” vibe really hit that spot.

    kasumi could be nerfed with a smaller hitbox and if by chance the player missed the hitbox the needle would hit kasumi's hand, dealing 75% of damage to the player, the experience would become high risk and high reward

    I love her design and concept, but her abilityes are just ugly... I feel bad playing her even being of my fav dps. I dont play Paladins anymore but i think shes jusy difficult to balance, and thats why they giganerfed her... It was necesary.

    16:04 as a hard support main since the early stages, the jab/joke about caut becoming a passive rather than an item both made me laugh and sigh in pain, they really need to make some way for the healers to counter the caut aside from praying the other players stop taking damage for a few seconds so you can properly heal them ;v; (the one seris talent that does that is a good start though, albeit she's the only one that can atm)

    The ten stacks idea actually sounds interesting and would give some justification to the auto aim primary, but i think that the auto aim is just too polarizing to be kept. Yes, its damage is one the lower end of the damage role spectrum, but at the same time it's very consistent (maybe not as much with the lock on being changed last patch) but you know what I mean.
    Let's saying I'm playing Drogoz and I end up in a one v one duel against a Kasumai. Typically, Drogoz should be able to out damage her, but that's only if you're landing EVERY hit. If your unable to land three direct hits in a row, then she's able to get full stacks on you (especially with the card that gives you a free stack for just hitting someone) and then can burst you for the rest of your health and if you live, disable your weapon for a sec.
    This can very between characters of course, but for characters that require precision such as drogoz, it can feel like a punch below the belt. I guess what I'm trying to say, playing against her demands perfect aim while she herself isn't as difficult. That sounds pretty unfair to me.

      I generally think it's too polarizing as well for sure yeah, both for players and her own kit. Honestly I should have mentioned in the video that those wacky ideas on how to balance her were made with the assumption that Kasumi's primary was NOT going to be reworked. I think it would be kinda funny if they just doubled down and never changed it and continued on regardless, but for the sake of Kasumi's own balance, some kind of rework would probably be the best-case scenario, even if I personally don't think it'll happen lol. Tbh tho I'm chill with either and just curious to see what'll happen lmao

    i started playing the game a few days ago and kasumi was in the recent cycle of free characters. I played her and i find her to be so fun!! i really love her concept. like, a voodoo doll that you stab to damage enemies?? so cool. i could see how she would be annoying with people who play her really well but so far ive only encountered people who aren't too good with her. i definitely have had my moments where i pop off with her and i just know the enemies are pissed, so it makes sense that she's hated

      Honestly don't worry about her annoyingness, every character's gonna have a bit of an annoying factor to them, she's just a little higher in that respect than most. The folks who get really and truely mad just got too much time on their hands to let themselves get upset over a free game (aka probably me lol). If Kasumi vibes with you, dope, play whoever you enjoy and enjoy a fun game

    Thank you for this video. I stopped playing Paladins completely with this characters release. I just didnt agree with the direction and was fearful for the future of later characters.
    I was unaware they balanced her out the way they did. I can now see Myself potentially returning to Paladins very soon

    14:02 Ok I get what you're saying here...but as a random gamer that likes to play high skill mobility characters, getting tracked through the sky as a Maeve or Andro when the player doing it has their monitor off is also frustrating and annoying. So asking the player to simply pay more attention for free value seems a very do-able to me (and yes, I've tried her since the change, feels way more fair).
    Edit: Finished the vid now, very well made and your voice is nice for some reason (all the homo ;3 ) and my option is simple that she will always be annoying...Much like every other auto aim in any other game, free dmg is still free dmg and no one on the receiving end like that shit. Barik turrent is dog...but it's free dmg and annoying, maeve street justice is situational...but is free dmg and annoying...Pre nerfs Skye was free dmg against tanks, you get the idea? So I have no idea how they will fix this beside just making her bad and having her be a casual use character.

    i’m somewhat new to paladins but i can say that i am a kasumi main and enjoy playing her a lot. i picked her up because idk i just like the weird creepy dead girl aesthetic (feel like i personally reflect that in a way) and kept playing her because of her kit. i love the whole idea of building up stacks of curses so that way it’s easier to secure kills on enemies and it feels a lot more rewarding to get those kills after building up stacks of curses. i’ve noticed that once you start to get rolling with her it’s kind of hard to stop rolling. maybe it’s just a personal mindset thing but when i start doing good with her i can’t stop doing good with her and end up keeping a momentum of steamrolling the enemy. she’s honestly my personal favorite champion in paladins
