From The manual. The VU Compressor was designed to replace, and improve on, 4 keystone hardware compressors in producer Sam Pura’s studio workflow, each recognizable by their prominent VU meters. Real hardware compressors residing at The Panda Studios in Fremont, California were painstakingly recorded and analyzed by Purafied’s own Eddie Lucciola to match compression and saturation character. TYPE A is based on the infamous blue stripe FET Limiter, revision A. Modeling was completed at a 4:1 ratio, with the slowest attack (surprisingly: 0.8 ms) and fastest release setting. The point is: you can get any amount of compression just by turning up the gain, and your transients are perfectly safe. This compressor is seriously glossy, and became omnipresent after “The Sound of Hits” disclosed his heavy use of it on vocals. TYPE D is based on the black face version of the FET Limiter, revision D. Knobs are set the same way as TYPE A, for the same reasons. Despite being a black face FET Limiter, this revision of the compressor has a very edgy tone compared to revision F, and is a time-honored staple for vocals and guitars for that aspect. TYPE F is based on the more modern black face FET Limiter, revision F. Knobs are set the same way as TYPE A, for the same reasons. This revision is significantly more common than revision D, and is easily the most modern sounding compression model in the plugin. TYPE 3A is based on optical, not FET, compression, with this model specifically using Sam Pura’s custom 3a-style leveling amplifier, modified to use the highest quality T4B opto cell. We set it to “COMP” mode for our model, and left the nonexistent attack/release knobs as they were.
After watching your video I tested the VU Compressor and I have to say I think it sounds really great. I purchased it. It also does a good job compared to other much more expensive plugins. It sounds even better with 8x to 16x oversampling.
I'm going to take a wild guess that it's actually Kiive Audio who has coded this plug-in. Exactly the same UI style! I really like Kiive's plug-ins (except for the guitar amp sim), so this should be great as well.
Sam Pura is a beast of an engineer imho, he recorded many important albums in the 2010 pop punk scene. I'm so happy he's making plugins. And with these prices! I mean, Liquid Death Snare is free, meaning every drummer or band is ten step closer to sound a bit more like their favourite records. This seems incredible to me.
Very interesting plugin. The manual lists the compressor types as blue stripe rev. A, black face rev. D, black face rev. F and a 'typical 3A optical' compressor. Whether they are true emulations, don't know, don't care. They sound really useful and musical to me. I also have to say the price really surprises me. You can get this for less than €40, which seems a steal to me
I love your videos man, started watching you from the beginning! My ☕️ is complete with your reviews 😅 Also, just wanted to say that most of us actually prefer the analog/vintage look of plug-ins, it inspires. Great sounding comp here!
That sounds really good actually. As for the UI, I actually don't mind how it looks aslong as it's functional. Unlike those weird 3D perspective ones where it's hard to read where the dial actual is.
fun fact - Sandstorm by darude is a classic 1960's EDM song that was created using parallel auto-gaining oversampled compressors in series. Ten 1176 style compressors were linked to create a feedback loop oscillator, the pitch was controlled with a variable voltage attenuator.
Liquid snare death is a great FREE plugin I use a lot layering my logic snare. How much is this compressor? Can we compare it to Klanghelm? I do not know why we should not have comparisons between those old bargain plugins and new ones.
No attack and release or ratio? That's where all the sound variations are for me on an 1176. Still sounds good and the autogain seems really well implemented.
THD stands for Total Harmonic Distortion. is a measurement of the harmonic distortion present in a signal and is defined as the ratio of the sum of the powers of all harmonic components to the power of the fundamental frequency
Extremely surprised that Wytse doesn’t know what THD means. It’s a basic audio engineering term. You see it used in every spec sheet of every piece of gear.
Hey brother, how's this thing on CPU? After Sugar by Process Audio (which actually sounds really nice) I'm hyper hesitant to buy new plug-ins like this cause Sugar uses 20%+ of my CPU and is almost unusable even when I stem out my projects to mix after. I don't like doing trials cause I have to uninstall shit after and it makes my stuff messy.
CPU usage is not as high as you think. 3-5%. Depends on the CPU of course. And even with oversampling not much higher. Testing the plugin is very uncomplicated because no registration. You can just download it. No installer, only a vst3 file. Only draging in the folder. That's it.
Looks good! Liquid Death Snare was a cut above the rest to put it lightly (adjusting pitch plays a new sample of a snare tuned accordingly in real life, not algorithmic pitching like in the majority of drum plugins). This one sounds great as well and looks like they've really nailed some things (harmonics especially sounding great to me here)... I am, however, turned off by the lack of envelope controls- is it marketed as a 2bus plugin?
White Sea Studio is the first, and only page I have ever subscribed to since youtube was born. Thanks for making an authentic channel Wytse. Hope you get a little inspiration from this comment. Keep pushing! :)
My suspicion is that this plugin is going to be mandatory for many studios from now on. Despite its vintage look, which is probably cos it want to fight Waves. (And that I like because I am facing them out. Their way of louring people has to stop.) This one looks very easy to use. But first of all. It’s transparent. This compressor I immediately got very fund of.
Its an old plugin (not sure if you have already done it) but I would love to see you have a go with the Klanghelm MJUCjr , its a free plugin that is similar to a paid plugin they do but its actually its own thing
Me likely the D setting -fantastic and open sounding. Made the blue sound choked and small in comparison. Close second was the 3A , nice weight to it which is what a 3A does.

This plug-in is really good! I’ve been looking for a compressor to add to my mastering plugins. I wonder if this could be used on a master bus? If anyone knows a reply is appreciated :)
It probably isn’t versatile enough to be on a master bus as it lacks attack and release controls. Also the UREI stuff(the compressors this is probably modelled after) is too fast for use on a master bus, usually used on vocals and drums, of course you can use it on your master if it inspires your sound. You ideally want an API 2500, SSL bus comp, fairchild and elysia alpha compressor to have a good choice of master bus compression. Could even consider a tubetech. Hope this helps.
Yeah, there's lots of better mastering plugins out there. Start with SSL Bus Comp or Elysia Alpha which you should be able to get for 29 bucks at some point.
Sounds really good!. The D preset is pretty darn punchy with extreme settings. Big choice for drum buss!. Maybe it's just me, but with 16x selected the distortion seemed to increase?, or was it just different?. This thing pretty much checks all the boxes. If they tweak the auto-gain so it's consistent over all presets, it's perfect .
I was starting to testing on Mac, but as i put a second instance a bug came on... my 14 days trial never functions again so i just tested on a bass bus and i was starting to enjoying it...
At one point it sounded pretty crunchy - around 4:40 to 4:50 ? like oversaturated - even with the oversampling. Look, my man, I really don't want to like this plugin as I already have way too many compressors . . . but I like the simplicity of this.
Hmmm...it's Thursday. With you I'm always somehow programmed on Saturday. This confuses me... already over. I'm back. That reminds me, I'll be on Texel soon. If you're around or in Den Helder, just wave over.
As a voice talent, I'd like to hear it on vocals. For years, I used an 1176 on all my voice tracks, and I've yet to hear a plug-in that could match its clean and colorless compression.
With regard to plug-in interface design. I must say that I prefer the "old analog style" design. They force me to use my ear to make decisions. "Modern" interface designs tricks me into using my eyes. Just because an EQ or Compressor curve looks good on screen, doesn't mean that it SOUNDS good. That the visual cues overwhelm the audio cues, is a big issue with using DAWs and computers. In the olden days you HAD to use your ears! I feel that something gets lost when we rely too much on visual (graphic) cues to judge audio. I tend to stay away from plugins with "modern" interface designs, for this very reason.

Hey. I’ve been evaluating my RUclips subscriptions lately and come to the conclusion that it’s pretty weird taking advice on what to use and not, from someone I don’t have a clue about their track record. Not like unsigned amateurs but like signed artists, actual paid work from labels, that would be great. It would increase the credibility a-lot for the stuff you’re posting. Thanx.
It sounds great, but a multicomp with 2 1176's with NO attack and release is sort of useless to me as a replacement. It's a great stand alone idea though.
