Prince Of Egypt is a movie more people need to think of when DreamWorks is brought up, since people usually think of Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How To Train Your Dragon
I agree. I watched the film for the first time ever last year’s summer (despite being a 90s kid) and I’m surprised how criminally underrated it is, along with “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” which is my all time favorite Dreamworks movie, even more so now because it was my grandma’s favorite and it’s more dearer to me since she passed away 6 years ago next month
Exactly ! It’s so criminally underrated that it’s tragic as it is a TRUE masterpiece! Especially since it’s my No. 1 favorite movie of all time ever since I first saw it in the theater when I was 8 I wish I could relive that glorious experience at least once again ! It’s even above The Lion King for me bc of its greater spiritual meaning , Catholic themes , and timeless messages All The Prince of Egypt fans unite ! ✊✊✊✊✊✊
@@paytonturner1421 Its one of the best villain songs of all time for sure 👍 Plus the catchiest and possibly most intense song in the movie besides The Plagues song I absolutely love it too especially the visuals and the way it’s sung ! The line “Oh that’s pretty “ gets me every time 😂
Prince of Egypt is a no-brainer when it comes to this list. What’s great about “Deliver Us” and “The Plagues” is that they don’t hold back they’re punches in showing the severity of the situation while still being family-friendly at the same time, which is an extremely hard thing to do. Stephen Schwartz is nothing short of a lyrical genius, and when combined with the musical talents of Hans Zimmer, is an absolute masterpiece we can’t get enough of!!!
“You can’t take me” from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is dark, but “Sound the bugle” is way darker….sure, it turns uplifting in the final part (to show Spirit’s resilience) but the majority of the song is the lament of a broken defeated soul.
I was going to mention this too :) Its such a beautiful, haunting song. It plays when Spirit is ready to give up too and accept his fate. Definitely one of the darkest musical moments in DreamWorks history, even if the ending is a call to action and remembering what you're fighting for.
Sound of the Bugle is much darker. I remember reading a comment that I didn't know about, that Bryan just finished a concert the night before it was recorded, they thought it would be perfect since his voice was almost completely gone, making it sound rough and very low, he was tired, and in pain. The lyrics, "As the seasons change, remember how I used to be. Now I can't go on, I can't even start. I got nothing left, just an empty heart. I'm a soldier, wounded, so I must give up the fight." After going through so much, taken from his family and thinking he was never going to see them, thinking Rain had died, and being stuck and shipped somewhere else, he had nothing left. He fought so hard, and he started to lose hope and didn't care what would happen to him cause he had lost everything he cared about, so he thought in that moment till he fought back on the railroad scene and Little Creek saved him from the forest fire. I have watched this movie way too many times as a kid, now an adult and actually understanding what that scene means to you as an adult.
Wow! This is my favorite Spirit song since I was a kid and I never even knew that about Bryan Adams being tired while actually recording it after a concert! Sheesh! Wow! Lol EEP! :) Thanks for sharing that! EEP! :)
"Sound the Bugle" should have been the choice for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron. While the ending portion is hopeful, the rest of the song is just devastating and very relatable to the point of making you self reflect on a deep level leading up to that ending. It's a lot more powerful and darker than "You Can't Take Me", imo.
The Prince Of Egypt, Do I Need To Say Something Else? Because 'DELIVER US' Is One Of The Most EPIC Opening In All Animated Movies And The Most Darkest Powerful Song EVER!
I bounce back & forth between this opening and the opening of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" as the best opening of any movie, animated or no. They're both so powerful, full of content, and don't hold any punches.
@@sebastiancalle8892 Yes, she does. Currently, at 18, she has been collecting Japanese anime themes on her Spotify. She turned me on to Eve, who is incredible. Can't understand what he is singing, but he sings it SO well.
Can we all agree that “The Prince of Egypt” and “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” have the most underrated soundtracks in all of DreamWorks’ filmography?
Every single time I hear the songs from Prince of Egypt's I gets goosebumps, the Deliver Us will always bring me tears. I grew up with the French version, but I think it's a movie that will affect us all in any language. The lyrics, but also and most of the music, is so powerful in all songs.
It should have been. According to IMDB, "The production team and executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg conferred with roughly 600 religious experts to make this movie as accurate and faithful to the original story as possible. After previewing the developing movie, all of the religious scholars, experts, and leaders associated in the making of this movie noted that the studio executives listened and responded to their ideas, and praised the studio for reaching out for comment from outside sources."
Here's an honorable mention, The Marketplace from Joseph King of Dreams. A song where Joseph is taking to Egypt to be a slave, with the song telling him how his new life is going to be like.
There is no doubt in my mind that music in Prince of Egypt is a dark but needed to be there in order for the story to tell and teach us all the lessons from the Book of Exodus. Even before watch this list I figured most of the songs from the movie would be on here because they really powerful.
When I saw the title of this video, I thought anything from the Prince Of Egypt had to be on this list I can't remember if there's already a DreamWorks darkest movies video, but if there isn't then Prince Of Egypt would definitely be number 1
I dunno. To me, it's almost comical. What doesn't help is that it's sung by Steve Martin & Martin Short. Their little asides ("Oh, that's pretty" "Pick up your silly twig" "Kowtow") and general tones are more mocking than dark.
I don't agree on "Take me" from Spirit..... there is one other how ever, which always send a tear down my cheak. The one sung in the scene, where Spirit is taken into the train and lead away. "...Remember who you are..." is one of the lines sung, and just re-writing it is enough
What about that one scene from Chicken Run? Like what happened to poor Edwina. It’s just dark. I know there’s no song in it, but that scene is truly dark.
I wholefully agree with the list but instead of you can't take me...sound the bulge should be in its place...it's far more darker! Especially with " wounded so I must give up the fight, lay right down decide not to go on" and "without a light I fear that I will stumble in the dark..there's nothing more for me...lead me away" I mean you showed the visuals from that exact scene in the beginning
You can't take me, from Spirit, that song always makes me feel bad for that poor horse. Happy wednesdau¿y afternoon, Samantha. Take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Actually it is bc Hallelujah means “God be praised” or “Praise God/the Lord” look it up Obviously it isn’t really used this way in Shrek but the lyrics have the same meaning as they’ve always had looooooong before the movie even existed I mean the song/word has existed since before Jesus’ time A lot of movies especially comedies like Shrek just like to use the song Hallelujah to be dramatic or to make fun of it
"The Plagues" and "Playing With the Big Boys Now" are my favorite songs from the movie. Both are extremely dark, but they stood out to me even as a kid when I first watched the movie.
I don't think I heard of those ones, but I do remember he did a cover of Hallelujah(the most covered song for every movie and TV show ever) and it’s equally as good as Rufus Wainwright’s version(the one I grew up with). I was shocked to find out Jeff died by drowning in the mid-90s at the age of 30. Hopefully, his biopic does get made to introduce his music to a wider audience. It's always heartbreaking to hear a musician die at an early age. There are so many musicians whose stories are heartbreaking in their right, but the male musicians whose stories never fail to break my heart are Kurt Cobain, Rob Pilatus, Michael Jackson, Tupac and Biggie. For the female counterparts, Selena Quintanilla, Amy Winehouse, Aaliyah, and Karen Carpenter.
Clint Eastwood AKA Ain't Happy Trolls and Hallelujah Shrek and This Is The End Puss In Boots The Last Wish and Playing With The Big Boys Now The Prince of Egypt and Born To Die Trolls World Tour and The Whistle Of Death Puss In Boots The Last Wish and Little Drop Of Poison Shrek 2 and You Can't Take Me Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron and The Plagues The Prince of Egypt and Deliver Us The Prince of Egypt gave me the shivers on TV or on Hulu or on the DVDs
Before I watch I’m gonna guess The Plagues from The Prince of Egypt is No. 1 Edit : Wow Ok but imo The Plagues is definitely darker than Deliver Us with the suffering , death, and destruction These 2 should have been switched for sure
How is “As Real as You and Me” from Home not on here? It literally lays out different ways we could die. I remember when I first heard it I thought ‘this is some heavy shit for such a cutesy movie.’

I think Prince of Egypt is a good example of an adaptation of a Religious Story done properly.
Agreed.
It should have been. I was just thinking about that one.Maybe it's in the background but the lyrics are more than terryfing
"The Prince of Egypt" definitely had a few hauntingly beautiful songs.
Haza Ofzarah's haughting voice is the key element to"Deliver Us"
The Plagues, You can't take Me, Playing with the big boys and Deliver Us are my favourites.
I'd add in "Heaven's Eyes".
“Deliver Us” gives the house of mouse songs a run for their money.
The Prince of Egypt cause I was shedding tears during the lullaby scene and I also got scared during the Deliever Us song scene
