Some JETs already went, as a "test run", they are staggering our departures world wide. Starting in five days to the beginning of December. Most of us have heard out departure date, but not all of us. Sorry I'm an Osaka JET, but it'd be cool to meet ya all the same XD Also us Minnesotans have that winter clothing tech, we call them Long Johns, cool that Japan sells them too!
2020 JET here coming to you from Tokyo quarantine at the moment. NY and SF arrived a week ago and anxiously waiting to be set free!!! Your videos have lighten the days!! Thanks
I’m scheduled to leave this Saturday. Actually one of my friends is finishing up her quarantine in Narita and should be heading to her placement this weekend. There’s basically a group of JETs coming in every 1 or 2 weeks until December. Not everyone has been given a departure date yet, but a good majority of us have.
I'm a 2020 UK JET heading to Tottori! Finally got my departure date last week for 27th Nov but still waiting to hear from my BOE and flight details etc.
"2020" JETs are mixed in with 2021 ^-^ and we're going in tiers each month Sept 11th-Dec. I'm headed to Gifu and land on October 31st to quarantine this Halloween lol This video was super excellent (as always) and I appreciate the time you take to put out useful info(:
Other people have kind of said already, but yeah. LA jets left before the Olympics but now, starting with September 11 there's basically 2 or 3 (sometimes more) consulates shipping out once a week. Almost everyone has dates so far except for the Calgary consulate (mine), Miami, and a few others like south Africa and Jamaica (and the 2021 UK jets). I think the last date we're aware of the is November 13 so anyone who hasn't heard yet (me, I cry) will probably be leaving some Saturday after that. Been refreshing my email multiple times a day for the last month, still hoping to hear soon. Getting real worn out though.
I think Otsukare sama deshita is like "you must be tired", I guess implying all the hard work. Thanks a TON for the uniqlo tip, I can handle the cold but I'm an absolute wimp when it comes to heat 😂
I'm in the September 25th departure group. I'm not going to Hyogo, but in our pre-departure orientation, I feel like most of the people that I spoke with were Hyogo ALTs. There should be a lot coming your way!
Hi Im an Eng. Lit and Linguistics grad. Not sure if your ever been asked this but was your accent ever an issue, did it even ever come up at all? Im from Stoke-on-Trent so I do have a real accent haha thank youuu
Actually I've been told by many Japanese people my accent is really easy to understand haha. Some alts I know have hella thick accents though and it's always fine. Just takes students/teachers time to adjust/get used to it
Thanks for the video! On UK cohort departure dates, I believe the 2020 applicants are coming early-mid Nov, but us 2021s still have no date just yet. One question I did have is about workwear. How many full suits did you bring with you, and what other workwear is acceptable/would you recommend?
I brought 2 suits. It's really gonna depend on the school. I suggest going full formal to make a good impression and then adjust depending on how you see other teachers dress. I literally taught in shirts and a t-shirt recently lol. I'm sure I made a workwear video at some point which showed a bunch of stuff I typically wear.
@@jakubtansey716 great, that was more or less my plan! Just to check I'm right in thinking that black suits are the norm and any othe colour will stick out like a sore thumb?
For those coming in the next few months, it seems like an awkward time. For instance, I’m coming in October, but I was wondering how introductions and such (for students) will go since teachers may already have things planned out, in that case will they quickly introduce us to the class and move on? Also regarding a mobile plan, I was looking into Linemo, but you need a Japanese number already if I remember correctly. I should just get mobal or sakura and switch after a few weeks right? I’ve been thinking about this stuff even though it’s probably the last thing I need to worry about
Re: coming at an awkward time. I imagine this will entirely depend on the school and how they usually treat their ALTs. At my school my lessons are very chill and I can just do whatever, so I imagine if I'd arrived in October I would have been introduced in the same way as coming in August. Maybe higher level schools with more pressure will have a full plan for the whole semester and new ALTs will be thrown right in... But this is pure speculation! Re: mobile stuff. It's up to you but maybe it would be easier to see if you can put a JTEs phone number or something when you arrive for the application. Sakura mobile is expensive. But if you don't care about that and there's no long term commitment then I guess up to you.
Soooo much time to prepare though! Thinking about it this early is definitely an advantage :) Start looking for opportunities now you can get involved with to boost your application!
@@jakubtansey716 I've been working on it since 2019 lol. The moment I found out about the program I switch over some of my classes to learn about linguistics and took two Japanese classes. I've been doing mostly research and plan to start getting paperwork starting next year in January. I would have took a grammar class to, but my college doesn't offer it which is kinda lame. I guess I'm worried about things out of my control, but I'm not gonna let it stop me! I really hope I get accepted.
@@jakubtansey716 If I get in I'll let you know! I was advised to change my 3 picks though. XD I picked Osaka, Kanagawa and Fukuoka city. I'm happy with anything that isn't Inaka. I can't drive.
Idk how much weight the preferred placements have. Anyone applying should be prepared for inaka life too. Personally I applied for smaller cites around Osaka and whatnot cause they're still really close and I figured would be less popular in the requests. Worked out for me!
When are you expecting (or hoping) to depart for Japan? Any incoming Hyogo ALTs watching this?

Leaving on the 9th of October! Going to Niigata Prefecture!
Ooooh I've heard 'long Johns' referred to in movies and stuff and never knew what they were lol.
Not long now!! Good luck with the final preparations 😁😁
@@jakubtansey716 thanks Jakub!
This REALLY helped, I know this video is older but I just was accepted for this year and I leave in August, thank you for the video!!

Love how you add those little clips (not sure the name of the show) into your video
I've been using a lot of real housewives clips recently lol. But there's a mix in there not just from the same show :)
