    As a high school graduation gift, i bought a Kramer guitar. 1985. The store gave me a Roland SH-101 as a 'bonus'/free gift. A classic synth as a 'toss-in,' with a $500 guitar. Nuts. Wish i still had that Roland. I let a friend borrow it, and never saw her again.

      CentaursRelax314, While it doesn't compare to a ROland SH-101, i know the feeling, i lent an acoustic guitar, it was only $150 but still... never saw it again, and I haven't owned an acoustic guitar since.

      The sh01a is such a fun little synth. You get something cool out of it each time you turn it on. Really easy to learn, and even if they're small I love the sliders. Think I prefer them over knobs honestly.

    I owned a real SH-101 and ended up selling it because the plastic was faded and battery cover tabs broke off. I now own the SH-01A. It's a perfect replacement. I can't tell the difference in sound with my ears. It has MIDI, and takes up far less space in my studio. No regrets!

      Yep, there's a lot of armchair idiots out there. Owned a lot of original Roland kit. I still have a TB303 which does sound awesome, however, I view it as a collector's item, love the retro feel and it sounds great. The new boutiques sound just as good though and are much more practical on every level, leaving you loads of cash to buy more kit! ;-)

    I pressed play and scrolled down so I as not to see which was playing and I found it difficult to tell them apart. I think this boutique would offer a good sound and good value. Thanks for the demo. I'm sure I will be seeing all the comments bashing the SH-01a for being digital.

    Hat off & thanks for this awesome moment throughout this comparison between the original SH-101 & the SH-01a...
    These 2 different machines aren't sounding too different, in fact ... which proves that Roland engineers did an excellent job with these kind of "re-editions" with a different technology inboard ! ;-))

    Hey bro, I probably speak for everybody when I say thanks for taking the time to do this. At the end of the video, you asked for some feedback so I just wanted to bring one issue to your attention.
    Since the sound is so close, a person can get a better idea of the differences if you match the sounds as closely as possible and then switch them back and forth. The sequence you play @5:08 has the SH-01a with a completely different filter setting then SH-101.
    But overall I enjoyed the vid, and you've got another sub. Maybe I'm just splitting hair's, because the SH-01a does sound great. But the SH-101 is one of the best sounding mono synths ever made, and I can't help being skeptical whether or not they really pulled it off with digital modeling. The plug-out version was pretty good, but a bit grainy when compared to other analogs synths.
    So what's your take, did Roland nail it or is it close enough? Thanks, looking forward to other vids.

    • @machiwoomiapoo
      @machiwoomiapoo  7 лет назад

      Thanks for your wonderful comment. :) I appreciate your feedback. I really think Roland did a wonderful job with the SH-01a. Sorry about the filter differences. I haven't had a chance to learn much more about the SH-01a features, since I normally just load a sequence like I do with the SH-101 and push play. :) I am excited to hook it up via MIDI and create some BASS lines. Take care and have a wonderful week. :) Sam.

  • @Room16Tattoo
    @Room16Tattoo 7 лет назад +12

    Not a bad comparison, even if it wasn't too accurately done. It shows that the SH01a can get in the ballpark of the 101 which means for those who don't want to take their vintage 101 on stage or travel with it and for those who can't afford the classic, that this is a viable option. I have a 101 and I will likely get the SH01a myself, it will be handy for taking to jams and smaller gigs should I need to and it is a handy backup to have if you take the vintage one on the road and are worried about it breaking down.

  •  7 лет назад +4

    Sh-01 is really nice sounding as is most of the boutique range, I'm glad Roland are doing recreations of there classic gear so any Joe bloggs can afford to have essentially have at it with a classic synth/drum collection, now you don't have to pay 3 grand for a tb303 etc etc, hats off too Roland 🍄

    SH-01a is an impressive emulation, I'm surprised how similar it sounds. It's the size of the SH-01a puts me off it. Looks a bit fiddly, like a toy.
    Tempted to pick up an original SH-101 at some point. Have a Juno-6 and it's a lot of fun.

      I agree, the biggest problem I have with the Roland Boutique stuff is the cheap construction and tiny size. "Toy like" is right. I hate that Roland is going this way, I have a lot of there late 80's and 90's rack stuff and they are built like tanks and still functioning, this new stuff....yuck...BUT...still has the Roland sound...soo.....(the Korg Volcas are even worse for cheap construction...just terrible).

      @_EightySix 7 лет назад +12

      Do you own any Boutiques? I have the TR-08 and 09, a TB-03 and a JX-03. They're not cheaply built at all. The entire top panel is aluminum and they have some weight to them. They feel solid, way more than they appear they would if you haven't held one. The knobs and sliders are reassuring as well. I love these things, especially for the price. I'm able to have all these classic vintage synths, (or a damn good emulation of them) for a fraction of the price of the real versions. The fact that they're made by Roland is even cooler. I also look at them as sort of a novelty/collectors item but they can still perform as a legit instrument. If you haven't actually played with one I highly suggest you give it a try. I'm waiting on the red SH-01A and the DS-05 to come out so I can get them too!

    Thanks for doing this...I usually get irritated with these AB comparison vids. But this has been a useful video to watch because I used to own an SH101 and used extensively both in the studio and live. I loved it...but I bought a Novation SuperNova and thought "I don't need this any more and I could use the cash"! So I sold it. Silly Billy.... I missed it straight away and longed to have it back. Now they command silly money. That's why I bought an SH01A as soon as I could get one. It's like having an old friend back. To me it sounds the same but I can't compare...I feel at home. I'm familiar with the sounds but I think the new additions are great too. I'm in love again.

    Much better than a 'single take' demo/jam presented on the Roland channel. I'm interested to hear how this sounds playing live on a midi controller keyboard.. I have the JU06 - I would never consider to try control it with those tiny mini keys for live playing though. I think Roland missed a trick in their boutique design by not making slightly larger format, with pitch and mod wheels on the controller keyboard part - that would have left a lot more real estate for longer sliders/more spaced out controls - a key complaint I keep hearing, and why I could not buy the JP-08 even though seriously tempted.

    I am curious what your opinions of the SH 01 is, now that you've had it for a while, and are so familiar with the 101 ? I have always wanted a 101, but balk at the price and the prospect of paying for repairs (if/when needed) . I am leaning toward buying the 01a and playing with it for a while, selling it in the future if I want to move on to other things (eurorack probably). Thanks for any input.

    Its very close , i owned both , i would treat the sh01a as a different synth almost or poly 101 , its better for that , the real 101 has more psychoacoustic energy and just a stronger sound and thats even more so when you accumulate signals in a track .
    The biggest shortfall is the size in the sh01a which makes it much harder to get subtle adjustments , it should have been full size .
    I was surprised how close it was when i tried the sh01a but there are differences , some wont hear them as they simply do not listen to energy or aspects of sound that are missing , only the character , that said with an sh01a and an spl vitalizer or something similiar you can make the sh01a Really Big and closer to the original where i dont think anyone could tell .
    One key aspect for me was resonance , the sh01a is missing just some small aspects and the resonant harmonics which dsp does not ever replicate that well or 100% but its still extremely good in the sh01a , its just not an analogue circuit.
    I recommend both , i love the sh01a for poly stacked sequencers , mental stuff.......
    In truth only trainspotters will notice the difference , its more about what we are each happy with , its all good , it all makes good music .

      I just got the SE-02. It sounds great if you like the warm analogue sound. There are some things missing for me e.g. a good distortion. It has a feedback feature, but it sound very different. Overall the sound of the SE-02 is worth it for me. It nails basslines. I have a Virus TI also and the two works great together.

    It's the skill of the musician rather than the ever so tiny differences between these versions of the classic that makes a good track or not. I use an Intellijel Atlantis as my alternative to an SH-101 and embrace the differences and similarities it brings. If I were to get an SH-01a I wouldn't be bothered by its size and small sound differences. A good musician will be able to make it work and it's a really good price which makes it affordable for many people who can't get their hands on the original! Quit y'all moaning :)

    I LOVE the scenery! The unicorn drawing behind you, it really feels like I'm at a would be friend's home! I think it really is helping my ears to see such a home-ly environment, my moms' piano would fit right into this scenery, no doubt. You've taken great care of your 101, my newest stuff looks beat compared to that. I'm just brimming with compliments, but great T-shirt, as well. Thank you!

    So, I just got back from Guitar Center and was able to take the SH-01a for a test drive. Everything is so small on it. I was grateful that I had my old man reading glasses on, to magnify the micro font size. But my main complaint is that I found the controls to be a bit unintuitive. Especially the LFO, I couldn't seem to route that to anything. Good tones, for sure. I also expected more polyphony. I have a Korg minilogue already, and think I'll be content with that for now. Maybe save up for a Pittsburg modular or something.

    • @machiwoomiapoo
      @machiwoomiapoo  7 лет назад

      Yes, it is very small. It makes me appreciate the original in that respect. I know there's a way to get 4 voices out of it though. I love the Korg Minilogue. It is definitely a keeper. Thanks for stopping by. Take care, Sam.

    Sounds pretty accurate which is nice but one thing I noticed is that you can't do really smooth changes with the SH-01A because the faders are so small. But I feel the same way about pretty much every boutique.

      Yeah the sound is close enough but the controls are compromised because the sliders are so... vestigial :) and that's the whole reason we'd get a hardware version of a 101. Hands on controls. If the sliders were bigger id get one even if it sounded worse. Not even 4 voices can make up for the little sliders :(

      Kevin Roberts it's nice, it's New & has some nice features, yet by far it's not a replacement of the original. Right now as it stands a real 101 is somwhat a highly sought after, vintage analog mono synth & demands a price in the vicinity of $800 or more. This new boutique synth is what $300- $400, & it's not gonna keep climbing up. Vintage holds a value & probably will increase.
      That said, I do think this is nice & it's a good deal,especially for those looking for a sh101 sound without the means or wanting to spend more money for the original synth.

I'm sure there are differences but having not owned a 101 I don't think I'll pick up too much on them. 101's are going for too much money nowadays. Maybe next year 😉

    I can tell a big difference is the Lows and the filtering of the 101; they're so much more fat and wet sounds in the movements of the faders. The bass isn't hitting on the 01A like it hits on the 101. Big analog components just can't be emulated by a tiny board with tiny components; my theory. Electricity has room to breath in all of that analog circuitry!

  • @Minisauro
    @Minisauro 6 лет назад

    I find the filters incomparable. The plus side on the 01a is the portability, easy replacement and some features like the poly mode. Intellijel did a pretty good job with the Atlantis module , which is equally compact with a better sounding filter and oscillators. Why Roland cant just re release and old synth using discreet analog components? Would it cost that much more? why digitize everything? Doesn't it cost tons of money to develop a software of something that already exists? A smt Serge sounds just as good as a thru hole component version. Why massive corporations like Roland cant keep up producing a classic instrument, like a fender Stratocaster or a minimoog model d. After all that said I do like to sit back on the couch and fiddle with the 01a but that brings a music instrument to the same level as a fidget spinner. I'm curious to try the se-02.

    IMO there is a certain tone that a digital synth can not replicate. I spent many years trying to find a 303 replica and in the end I gave in. If your looking for the retro sound then you need the real thing imo.

  • @jordonpepperall3944
    @jordonpepperall3944 6 лет назад +1

    Thanks this was a great demo. The 01a sounds puny in comparison but the tone is the same. I'm hearing that the 01a wants to distort quicker and doesn't seem to handle the resonance as well. At 1:36 the 101 seems to auto compress that resonance where as the following 01a slide rips my ears off (I have sensitive ears). Most importantly for me, and the reason I was looking at this in the first place, is the sound of the sub oscilliator and it is close - it's about 80% close but the 101's sounds full and thick and it's a reason I would rather save for the 101 than buy the 01a. I would only buy the 01a if I was interested in the tone. However, plug-ins can also do this making it pointless getting a piece of hardware.

    'Emulation of the Past' is a shocking concept!... Can't we have 'Real Deal of the Future'...?!It's seems everything is cowering in the past right now, music, movies of reboots of re-releases, endless sequels!The term 'Boutique' would suggest something 'high end' or 'hand crafted'... something unique.What we get instead is cynical cost cutting, pillaging of past achievements! Cheap plastic horrors, mass produced and regurgitated as something revolutionary. The only reason it's sold in a 'Hardware' package is because their unconvincing algorithms get ripped off when they have a 'Software' package. Essentially, your paying for a proprietary plastic 'Dongle' to run emulation software!Musicians deserve more... much more! If you can't look to the future you won't have a past to get misty eyed and nostalgic about...
