If Lady of Rage's album wasn't delayed til '97, and was dropped in '94 as it was originally supposed to during the Death Row glory days, I reckon her career would have panned out differently.
Biggest hip-hop album of 1993 by miles for sure! And also one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. Snoop's voice and flow is so iconic and unique, it shows on this album and The Chronic.
G’z Up Hoes Down was on those presses but tha next episode was never added, even to the first pressing, there have been leaks of the song but never in good quality but the official instrumental was repurposed for crooked I on his song real thugs. Honestly the original tha next episode I think blows the chronic 2001 version out of the water
You gotta do the first Dogg Pound album “Dogg Food” it’s a classic, also the song playing in the background on “Murder was the case” is Mr Grimm ft Warren G and Nate Dogg called “Indo Smoke”
Suge basically pushed Rage album back year after year she was supposed to had dropped in ‘94 when she dropped her single “Afro Puffs” on the Above the Rim soundtrack. Her album didnt drop until ‘97 which was overshadowed bc death row had basically died at that point
I got to see Snoop Dogg , Kurupt, Daz, Nate Dogg, lady of rage and a few others in small club in Knoxville back in the mid 2000’s . I had to work a 12 hr shift at 7am, concert didn’t start til 8pm the night before. I went had the best time of my life with Cylk Cozart and a few other buddies and left around 4am. Went to work still mind drunk but was one of the best nights of my life. Snoop Dogg really tried to sneak in the back door being 6’5 in an all yellow jumpsuit. Me and Cylk and David all saw him and started the jumping, then the Gin & Juice beat came on. One of the highlights of my life
Tha Shiznit is the track that proved to me that Snoop could really rap. Lyrically he spazzes on that track. I bump that joint to this day. Doggystyle is a perfect 5 mic album and Tha Shiznit is definitely my favorite. Great review. Respect.
Dudes, i literally just ordered this cd on ebay. I had it on tape! In 19 mutha f#ckin 93 but hey, you guys influenced me to get it again as you being generations apart i f'ing loooove this shiznit. So thankyou my dudes 😊
I remember going to the record store every week for a bout a year to ask if came out already. This was pre internet era and the album got delayed. Also, i live in the Netherlands,, This was by far the most anticipated hiphop album to me along with Busta Rhymes the coming, Cypress Hill Black Sunday and Wu-tang clans 36 chambers. The version of this album i bought was with a extra track called G's up, hoes down, it got dropped due to sample issues.
I've always said this is the greatest produced rap album song for song, this album had 4 singles and one turned into a movie and a soundtrack! This is in my opinion Dr Dre best work as far as a complete album..
Lil Bow Wow was actually on Deathrow when he was four/five yrs old and on the Doggystyle album on skit. Snoop Dogg introduced him on the Arsenio Hall Show back in the day. Amazing moment on TV seeing a mini me Snoop
This is a certified classic album! DOESN'T MATTER GENRE. This is one of the best music albums of all time.. top 20 and top 10 Hip-Hop albums ever! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
La Di Da Di was an almost word for word cover of the classic track by Doug E Fresh and MC Ricky D (before he changed his name to Slick Rick) Also Snoop wasn't singing biggie since this album came out 4 years before Hypnotize..Big was sampling Doug E Fresh You gotta react to The Low End Theory next!
I love these because I can listen to them like an album without watching them. I work in a warehouse and these have been awesome to listen to at I work
The G-Funk Intro just brings me right back to middle school and listing into this on cassette. It’s crazy how a sound can just bring you back to the feeling of a time period. I love this album.
coming from France , only 21 but i think this is one the best album i've ever heard, the production is top notch (the flute on Tha Shiznit is absolutely insane) and the fact that the beats merge with the voice of snoop it's like magic (sry for the bad english)
I love Snoop and this is one of the top 10 hip hop albums of all time. You'll never not know who it is on each and every track. S N Double O P. Snoop D O double G. Sometimes, you'll be reminded multiple times. Incredible lyricism.
I bought the cassette of this when it came out. The best part, was the fold out booklet that came with it. It was the artwork you see, plus more to the story.
Outside of Illmatic, Doggystyle is the best debut album ever n Tha Shiznit was a freestyle. My fav track gotta be Doggy Dogg World. Dope reaction as always
Been waiting for this one for a minute ! Now that Death Row’s catalog is back, you guys should do the Murder Was The Case and Above The Rim soundtracks. They’re both classics and also Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food.
One of the greatest rap albums of all time. I remember walking to school, rapping "aint no fun". My father would play this song crazy, which is why its one of the first rap joints i knew, word for word.
just a mention on the timeline: Enter the Wu Tang dropped 2 weeks before this (same day as midnight marauders), Illmatic and Ready to Die weren't out yet, although Halftime and Party & Bullshit were out as singles.
Snoop actually noticed Bow Wow in '93 at the age of 6 at a talent show in LA. He went by the name Kid Gangsta out of his love for NWA, Snoop nicknamed him Lil Bow Wow and took him under his wing. He later felt the atmosphere at Death Row wasn't where he needed to be and introduced him to Jermaine Dupri.
Great reaction. My suggestion is Ice Cube "Amerikkkas Most Wanted". One small correction. The West Coast had Hip-Hop on lock in terms of record sales from 1990-1994. The Chronic was released in December of '92. Nas, Biggie and Wu-Tang didn't come out until 94. They're movements brought the East Coast back. Biggie makes a couple of subtle references to that at the beginning of Ready to Die. Kurupt is originally from Philly and that's what influenced his flow. Lady of Rage was set to come out until 2Pac signed to Death Row. Everyone's release date was pushed back and a lot of tracks that belonged to other artists on the label were given to 2Pac for his albums. After he died and Suge went to jail the first time, Death Row fell off taking Lady of Rage's career down with it. The last song has a little irony to it as well. Sam Sneed was also a Death Row artist. Allegedly he was later beat up by Suge and his associates in Suge's office. Then he was forced to attend a Death Row party a few hours later.
It was a bold move on a highly anticipated album like this to let a feature have the opening verse on your album. Well played tho becuz he killed the rest of the album.
Was actually supposed to be Death Row tradition to have the next artist up be on the intro. Snoop was on The Chronic intro and his album came next. Rage was on Doggystyle intro and her debut album Dre planned to do next in 94 called Eargasms. But Suge fucked everything up in 94 and made Death Row do Above the Rim soundtrack and Murder was the case soundtrack. Rage did have the hit single Afro Puffs on above the rim. But 95 Dogg Pound album came instead again from Suges decision. And Oct 95 Pac got bailed outta jail, did the California Love video and All Eyez on Me dropped in Feb 96. There was so much excitement for Pac all the work went into his album and even Dogg Pound album released Oct 95 was bad timing, they didn't even tour cus it was all about Pac from there on. He died in September 96 and death row died with him. Dre was gone. Suge in jail. And Rage album came out in 97 with no Dre production and nobody cared by then. Sad.
Murder was a case of based on snoops real murder case, then there was an album called murder was the case the movie soundtrack and there was movie murder was the case movie. Then years later it was mentioned again on 2PAC Americas most wanted, featuring Snoop. Look up on RUclips MTV awards Snoop Dogg murder was the case performance Snoop broke down in tears no joke live on stage in a wheelchair, his final court case happens the next day with the jury verdict
Lodi Dodi is referencing La-Di-Da-Di from Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh. Living in Long Beach when this Album came out was crazy. I was only in elementary school but remember hearing The Chronic coming out of everyone’s car and house. Speaker for legit a year to hearing this album everywhere. You couldn’t go anywhere in the city without hearing one of these two albums. From like 1991-1995 You could legit go months without hearing any east coast rap music if you lived in the LA/Long Beach cus All of Death Row, DJ Quik, Eazy E and a few others dominated the radio. The only time you would here non west coast rap on the radio was Bone, Ghetto Boys, Wutang, Tribe, Nas and Biggie.
Very important sidenote. Not only did Dr.Dre not sample on the Chronics and Doggystyle he as well as others replayed interpolations of all the P-Funk sound. He very known for that. Mastery of his talents.
the initial release of the album had 19 tracks, the skits were separate tracks, and there was another song, Gz Up Hoes Down, that was removed by the 2nd pressing because the sample wouldn't clear. Sad, because it's a great song (can be found on RUclips).
Oh damn I just went and listened to Bird In A Sliver Cage and so far the first track is a jam! It has been saved and I’ll be listening to that a lot more. Thanks for the suggestion.
I've heard artist say that they were approached by record executives and offered a stake in the prison system to make violent destructive music. Now when I listen to older music from my youth I'm convinced it's true. This type of destructive music came out of nowhere.
Fun fact there’s two versions of the song “murder was the case”. The remix has a demonic voice talking to snoop instead of Dre’s voice as well as a slightly different beat.
That's Daz's voice not Dre's. And originally Dre wanted RBX to do the devil voice, but he thought they were trippin with the whole idea lol so Daz did it. Not sure why that was too much for RBX when literally same album he says "I got the machine to crack ya fuckin chest plate, open and release them guts!" 😂
Y'all gotta do The D.O.C.'s album "No One Can Do It Better"! Before Dre found Snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick or Anderson... The D.O.C. was the Doctor's first protégé (unless you want to include Eazy-E)! Before his tragic car accident that took out his voice, he was one of the best rappers to be endorsed by Dr. Dre. He helped write songs for NWA while making his own debut. After the accident, he remained solid with Dre and actually put him on to Suge Knight so that he could leave Ruthless Records and start Death Row Records. He was helping Dre and Snoop formulate their rhymes on "The Chronic", Snoop namely credits The D.O.C. for helping with the hook to "Nuthin' But A G Thang" The album itself is damn near before its time. The beats from Dre definitely have a post-NWA/pre-Chronic vibe but the rugged yet smooth voice along the rhymes is very groundbreaking or dare I say "Mind Blowin'" so much to the point where Em had to ask D.O.C. on his own documentary what did he say on one record because he said it so fast yet so fluently. Trust me, this is one album that you two will definitely enjoy!
Yes, yes, yes! Finally back with the classics. Just seen him in concert 2 weeks ago and he was fire. Shiznit, Serial Killa, Pump Pump are bangers! Aint no fun, Doggy Dog World so many legendary tracks. Top 5 hip hop albums ever!!! Would love to see your dad react to Warren G's - G-funk Era
ay fun fact abt lodi dodi it was actually almost a word for word cover of the slick rick song La Di Da Di. and all the hip hop refences you hear in there (like the biggie one) weren't actually refences, slick rick was the first person to say all that stuff. Especially "Ricky Ricky Ricky, can't you see Somehow your words just hypnotize me". Tha shiznit is so underrated, and whats crazier is that the whole song was a freestyle
