Having seen them many times live, at Ball State, Indy and Chicago..... I find it interesting that nobody mentioned Michael Smith. Really great guitar player and was amazing live.

I got to hang out with these guys after a small show in Indianpolis at a bar called Zanies 2. A little blues bar. After this guy played lack of water, he jammed with Gene Deer, who is an amzing blues player...then it was on later at Gene's house. Will never forget it. Would have been in the 90's.

Amen, to that FACT! Back, around 1996,I seen:
*) Amanda Marshall, *) The Why Store, & *) John Cougar Mellencamp
I would drive back down to the Bloomington Auditorium to see any of them, again, by themselves. But,
The Why Store stuck out the most & I'm still memorized by this band! I'm a music but & would say they are in mute Toop 10 Favorites of All Time!
Later on, I found out he's from Indiana & no a few local musicians that have are have others in their own band that plays with them, wow often.
I believe music has such a strong hold on my soul, because of the side stories! 🕊️❤️🎵❤️🕊️

I got to play guitar with The Why Store for about 18 months from 2011mid-early2013 and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The first lineup of the band was much more organic because it was obviously less "micro-managed" but even in spite of that, playing with Chris Shaffer was one of the most rewarding musical experiences of my life. Chris was one of a kind and always brought something different to each and every show. Jerome Rieskamp and Dan Hunt were also fantastic. I really miss playing with those guys, but everything happens for a reason...

I mixed monitors for them a few times in 95-96. We're talking way back... lol What I remember about them all is great guys, every one of them and extremely talented.

I have been a fan of "The Why Store" since catching them in Detroit, MI opening for John Mellencamp in the late 90's. I've had their CD in my laptop case ever since - it is my "go to" for listening to the entire CD over, and over, and over again - amazing lyrics, phenominal voice. Happy to see John Mellencamp watching out for fellow IN musicians, still.

They were a must see at Rick's in East Lansing in the mid-90s. Strong songwriting (with hummable melodies and memorable choruses), unique setlists every show, and even some transitional jamming (one song becoming another without stopping) almost every night. Also, Michael David Smith was a *beast* on the Strat. Best $3 cover charge value I ever paid.

I'll never understand why this band didnt make it big time. They were amazing. they got me through a really rough time. of course it was a really alcohol fueled time but they got me through it...

They were signed but Chris didn't want to give up any control of the music so they disappeared into obscurity. They still play around INDY, but the line-up is new and the old songs got rearranged.

I've been going to the Slippery Noodle Inn in Downtown Indianapolis to watch Chris play on Mondays for last couple of weeks. It's an enjoyable time to hear him play and relax to good music.

Why didn't this band ever make it? Because Shaffer was clearly an over-affected weirdo trying WAY to hard to be plausible.

The truth is, the record company wanted to compromise their follow-up album and they turned down money to keep the music authentic to their belief

Interesting, I've always wondered what really went down.
I'm guessing you're confident in that explanation? No trolling here, seriously interested... as that's not my understanding of what MCA's feelings were.

I loved the Why Store, and had a vested interest in their success.
Why didn't they make it...? My knee-jerk answer is straight out of Talladega Nights, "cause they liked to party".

    • @therealmikeh
      @therealmikeh 5 лет назад +3

FOH3663 This came straight from Chris and the band when we interviewed them when they came off their tour and back to Indy. They were playing at Zanies Too on the east side where it all began. Chris said he’d rather play on the corner with his guitar case open than to compromise the sound that made them successful. Btw, I produced a local tv show at the time, 1999, called I’m Livin’ at the time. Shortly thereafter Chris formed Shaffer Street and Charlie the drummer starting playing for Gene Deer a local blues band.

Hey Mike, I appreciate the detailed reply.
I was at that Zanies show... it was crazy. The magnitude of their popularity ... packed into that club that night, truly insane.
In addition to freelance work both live and in studios, I was FOH engineer for a couple different bands at that time; Tad Armstrong's His Righteous Fold, and the late John Zink's Tone Pigs. We often appeared with The Why Store as a support act @venues big and small around the mid-west.
Just a whirlwind! Great times for sure.
