It seems to me that if "Roger's version" of DSOTM was what had been originally released, no one would know DSOTM today.
Waters had the perfect opportunity to acknowledge Rick's death & loss on GG, and of course he talked about a letter he sent to a poet laureate with cancer...not a Nobel laureate in cancer research...and not the author of the song he's performing who also died from cancer.
This!!
A great point
God, I hope Roger Waters won't touch other Pink Floyd classics, especially my favorite Wish You Were Here and Animals
I mean…. Even if he does it doesn’t replace the original and you can avoid listening to it 👍🏻
I genuinely don’t understand the hatred towards the REDUX the message and concept of DSOTM still stand today as strong as ever so why not do a re take of it given that most people have over heard the music from 1973 original . It’s a smart idea to me .
He did good on the wall, not here
I did a try before you buy listen to this album on RUclips. I got 4 songs in and thought... nnnnno! Even RUclips said "F that" and crashed on me!
In my opinion, he should have called it, "Dark Side of the Spoken Word". Then, at least we would know what we are getting and not be caught "off-guard". Perhaps, Roger would have had less negative reviews. I don't think he should have done a "Redux" version but here we are. Personally, I give it a 2 out of 10 stars.
Dark side of the spoken word doesn’t even cut it! It should be dark side of rogers rambling. And man, I mean I love him but he is what he is and he shoulda cancelled this project or take it to another level, that would be fine…
1 free nap with every purchase!
It's interesting to me in a way the original hasn't been in a very long time. That alone gives it value. I can summon up that album in my head without ever nearing to hear it again. The reason for reworking it is because those words carry the message he wants to convey in a way that other albums he has written don't. The spoken word is worthwhile if you don't automatically switch off your brain. When it comes to Money: the original is the brazen defiance of the nouveau riche, with their hands on the cash and the levers of power, daring anyone to take it from them: the new version is about the grasping claws of the old money that knows all the tricks, the real puppet masters working behind the scenes to ensure they never lose control. It's the second version saying to the first: "You thought you had it made, you thought you were winning the game, how little you know, we've been here all the time and you're just a kid, not really a contender at all." The personal testimony of someone who has lost a friend on Great Gig is every bit as valid and powerful as the abstract wailing of a session singer, especially if you are of an age when the death of people you have known is a part of your everyday reality. When your Christmas card begins to diminish every year the personal becomes of much greater import than bland generic statements.
Thanks for review, for me listening this album was like torture,0 out of 5
Waters seems to think that his lyrics were all that made PF what they were, whereas to me it was the music more than the lyrics. That's why from The Wall (bitty scrappy song-led album with a couple of brilliant moments, like 'Comfortably Numb', which was mainly instrumental when you think about it) onwards, the PF shaped by waters stopped being an innovative music band and became a song-led group like millions of others. The Final Cut was the final straw to me anyway, just a bunch of Waters rants, with precious little to recommend it musically. If I want protest songs I'll go to Bob Dylan or Roy Harper. When I want what PF were once all about I start from Animals and work backwards!
@HonoraryGreek. I agree with you that waters is not much fair when he talks about his importance in PF. His version of dsotm is very dissapointing. But i don't agree at all with you in your poor opinion about the wall. To me, it's a fantastic album, as good as animals and wish you were here.
@@antoniogalianojerez9942 Fine. that's OK with me. We all have our opinions after all. It's no big deal to think differently about stuff.
I liked your comparison to Taylor Swift's re-recordings of previous albums! Also the suggestion of re-recording Obscured By Clouds and 'Several Species...'
My daughter is in her early 30s and she still hasn't listened to Dark Side of the Moon.
I find this mildly disturbing. And I think it reflects poorly on my parenting--although she DOES like Rush.
".....A pretty fair forgery"
Dark Side really is that album. The only PF record my parents had. My wife who doesn't dig much prog loves this. Never heard anybody say anything bad about the original.
I was SO BORED by this version. Like being boring is the absolute worst thing you can do! You can crash and burn really hard but at least that's something.
He did DSOTM because it was the 50th anniversary and the name sells!
Presumably you streamed or bought the CD of this as you make no mention of the bonus track that makes up the entirety of side 4 of the double LP version.
I quite enjoyed this album, it has nothing on the original, but the vibe is nice. Money had me worried that this would be awful when it came out, but Time, Us And Them, and Brain Damage/Eclipse were very enjoyable. Yes the lack of the guitar and saxophone solos is disappointing. I do understand your view though, the spoken word was tedious to get through.
Creators feel no need to blame anyone as they know that whatever happens, they have choice in the matter.
If you have both albums on your collection, which one do you play? 99 out of 100 times you'll choose the original. For who have listened "dark side" thousands times, "redux" is boring, is terrible bad, too bad actually. It's an failed attempt to kill Dark side
I had the original DSotM back in ancient times, that being 1973. I thought it a great record, but at the same time it seemed to me they had lost some of their cosmic mystery. Pink Floyd was always up until Dark Side a spacy kind of band, soaring through the universe. Dark Side seemed to be a commercial attempt at mass popularity, which of course it turned out to be. It was not Piper at the Gates of Dawn, or Ummagumma, or Atom Heart Mother. I don't know about this new Roger Waters version. I mean I listened to it once, and that was it. At first glance I found it pretentious, so can't say I'll delve into it to deeply.
I was bored to death
"The Dark Side of Waters' Ego". Hard pass. Steer clear. 0 out of 10, wouldn't recommend...
It's an opinion. I love The Final Cut, I love this, it's not Dark Side of the Moon. It's a different beast. You shouldn't compare the two, that wasn't the point of this.
It's an 80 Yr old man's take on his 29 Yr old self.
It's probably his last album, a kind of bookend to his life, from his view.
As an older man myself, I get it. I like it's atmosphere.
People are coming at this album from completely the wrong angle.
I've also noticed that if they are younger, as well as comparing it to the original, which is wrong, the message is not understood. Older people in general, although not everyone still, seem to give it more credit.
Personally, I get it and I love it.
We have the original, so play that. Personally, I'll play both depending on my mood.
Exactly mate, everyone listening to the album is getting it totally wrong. Do the brain dead not realise that Roger Waters knows he could never better one of the best albums ever recorded, an album that catapulted Pink Floyd to superstardom, an album that set the bench mark in sound recording, and also, an album that was used to test the best hi-fi equipment money could buy. I think Roger Waters would definitely know that. You CANNOT enjoy, something you just don't get, and for a whole load of folk listening to the album, they just don't get it, so put your Redux in the bin and go and listen to Dark Side 1973.
Can't be worse than Nostalgia Critic's The Wall! But Jesus, two bad Pink Floyd cover albums in less than 5 years!
This is the (probably) last effort of an 80 years old mind. It’s your grandpa telling you stories with music of a rock band he was 40 years ago…
He doesn’t redux another album because it’s DSOTM, the greatest album of PF who turned up to 50, logic…
Dog side of the moon?
IDK I think the Brain Damage version was actually pretty lit. Overall not a fan of the album, but the penultimate track was really good. (Also, the album’s cover was very creative.)
Why Roger Waters didn't name his new album " Deep sleep on the Moon - Valium Edition"? Then the listeners would have been forewarned 🙂
Several years late, but have you tried Papangu?
Dark Side of the Moon isn't a masterpiece, it's simply an often great prog rock LP. At least it's two duff tracks (Great Gig In The Sky and Money) are conveniently placed at the end of side 1 and beginning of side 2 respectively and easily skipped.
About Rogers version of the album, I like the Speak To Me/Free Four mash up a lot while Us And Them and Time are reasonably interesting. The rest are at best OK.
Clearly he did DSOTM because he wanted to focus on, and hi-light, the lyrical themes in it. Those, to him, are what’s of major import today, just as in 1973. He’s not wrong about the thematic importance of the album, and it’s relatability today, but the execution is severely lacking. He needed to make it different, for sure, to maybe catch the attention of young people unfamiliar with the original… and this doesn’t hit that mark. Not even close. This is a hard listen for most people, I am sure, but even moreso a younger audience that ought to be hearing the message! Nothing about this is going to draw a big audience to it.
Brilliant review, Notes! The extra words in Money - welcome to Hell, etc - are pompous and condescending, like we're so stupid that we didn't get it first time round and now he's gonna shove down our throats, right in the middle of a cost of living crisis as well. Apart from that, there's way too much music on it (horrible stuff, music) - it should've just been Roger rambling over 6 discs.
It’s not a slide guitar, it’s a theremin 😂 that weird instrument that witches play in movies. That’s a choice all right
Roger gonna Roger. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's a thing that doesn't really serve a purpose or fill in any artistic gaps beyond his own vanity.
The reason why you get bored is because you constantly compare it to the original… which is natural and under but what he did here was to peel it off of all the musical beauty and just deliver the message via the words and highlight the lyrics per se! It’s a brave move and I respect and value this piece of work…
Brave move, still boring
@@mirkecWii i guess at this point it’s not about entertainment and that’s the message… we are too entertained
It sounds like Muzak you'd hear piped in over the sound system of a mall or an airport terminal. It's dreadful.
It’s not good.
Musically the vast majority of this is dull and overly stripped down, not helped at all by Waters’ flat vocal delivery. The spoken word sections are distracting and don’t add anything to the songs where they are added into, and utterly ruin the instrumental pieces where maybe the arrangements could have had a chance to shine.
However there were a few moments on this I did enjoy. The Synth/Organ/and string arrangements, when they are brought to the forefront are very nice. Particularly enjoyed how they were used in place of Gilmour’s solo on “Time” throughout “Us and Them” and “Any Colour You Like” (If Waters hadn’t been blathering over the top of that track that is).
The only track on this I actually liked was “Us and Them” maybe it’s because the use of stings and organ on this feels more in line with the original, maybe it’s because Waters actually shuts up for a bit to let the music take a front seat, maybe it’s because Waters actually puts effort into the vocal delivery and actually sounds decent (on the vocal harmony “Forward he cried….!” part for example). The rest of the album however, was mostly a big miss for me.
I don’t begrudge Waters for wanting to reflect on an album and its themes at age 80 and recording this album the way he did in juxtaposition to how he did at 29/30. But that doesn’t make for a good album, or make it musically interesting. And I don’t think this is a record I’ll ever revisit.
….. also.. I don’t think a drummer has ever collected an easier paycheck than the drummer on this record
u miss the points by GIlmour and Roger fight : guitar vs voice (ie" "choosing the wrong instrument...". . . think of Roger's DARK as the 1966-1967 with SYD B. version pre-dating 1973 version by 1 generation, certainly BETTER than the reggae version ! Van Gogh can paint, so can Renoir, so can Da Vinci, ... I proprose we embrace them all. NO harm IMO.
Thanks for the review. I will celebrate the release by listening to the Original. One of my favorites, I suppose Rogers has a right to do what he wants. He has a right to think the way he does politically and to say what he chooses when to bitterly disrespects bandmates and fans but I don’t have to listen.
Roger Waters thumb in the eye of his band mates.
Oh Well, he tried. Radically reworking is probably the only way you can approach reworking a classic album. That said, maybe he was not inspired to create something unique. Perhaps angst and his awareness of ageing has something to do with the way the album turned out.
Several Small Furry Animals together in a cave grooving with a pict.
Only one listens, so far. Did not hate it or love it. The spoken word was fine in style and voice, but lyrically/prose wise did not work for me. It was clunky awkward and did not flow or seem to create a cohesive whole.
I understand not liking it but the hate for it is absolutely ridiculous. I think side 3 is brilliant and the sonics are beautiful throughout and I don’t care for the rest. As much as I’m attached to and love the original I don’t see the redux as an offence to it. If you don’t like it then skip forward and don’t let it ruin your life.
Why remake a classic? I heard the advance single “Money”. It was horrible lol I never want to hear anymore of it lol
What a dull and boring album.
I seriously don’t know if this wasn’t just a middlefinger to Gilmour or if he really wanted to revisit the old material, but damn is this a joyless and boring album.
I give him 1 point for effort, at least he tried to do something for the 50th anniversary. Pink Floyd did nothing.
I'm done with Waters, I want my money back. Dull Side of his Bank Balance indeed.
This has got to be one of the most embarrassing things a musican has ever done. I listened to a few tracks out of morbid curiosity and couldn't believe how awful it was, truly truly abysmal. It just reeks of ego and spite
This is the most boring, lazy "review" I have seen yet. You've said nothing. Your biggest criticism, by your own admission, is that the author of the music made it from his own perspective. That's your criticism? For real? What about The Wall? I take it you're not a fan. That's told from Roger's perspective as well.
dude u r a Waynes World type...please dont analyse Roger Waters
This album is a big terd!!!
Waters’ version is one of the worst albums in rock history. So bad, so boring.
Terrible album...couldn't listen a song in its entirety
REDUX SUCKS 💩
