I;m an old RC'er and am thinking of building a 1/4 scale or maybe bigger of your Plane with all the same options of flaps and scuff controls, plus the big tires. Whatchia think?

    When you prop swing don’t swing the lower prop, it’s much easier and safer swinging the higher prop it gives you more space and it’s much more comfortable with less chance of falling into the prop. Greetings from SA

    • @Merlin-pm4vm
      @Merlin-pm4vm 4 года назад

      Duncan Ritchie Exactly. Also I have taken my blade off and rotated the alignment by one set of holes to get it where I want it. I also carry a spare glove as my composite blade is sharp. I started to hand prop from behind,, just feels safer.

  • @salnichols94805
    @salnichols94805 4 года назад +6

    Trent, the safest way to hand start is to: 1) switches and mags off. It can’t fire. 2) pull the prop through to the top. 3) switches on, mags on, brakes on. 4) swing your right leg TOWARDS the plane, and as it swings back, pull the prop. Your momentum, caused by the leg swing will pull you away from the prop. I used to do this on my dad’s Aeronca when I was 12. Piece of cake.

    • @airgliderz
      @airgliderz 4 года назад +1

      Never assume it "can't fire" / start with MAG's off. Than can get you killed/injured. A bad connection on how mags are off, shorted to ground and the motor can start when prop is pulled through. Stay safe, never assume anything is safe when it is your life, it is always your responsibility for your own safety, no one else's is. Others doing something as turning mags off should Never be relied on. Trust but verify, it will save your life and prevent injuries.

    • @salnichols94805

    I'm an old pilot but not an old bold pilot, I HAD A Stinson 108-3, it was a very forgiving plane. I lived in Northern Idaho and the worst back country field I've been in was Moose creek and fish lake.
    I admire what you boys do, if I was younger and in better health I might do that too.

  • @karlschuch5684
    @karlschuch5684 4 года назад

    Trent, just some info on the hand prop... the safest way to do it is to get close to the prop standing up straight, put your back foot forward, and as you start to spin the prop have your forward foot moving back... that way your momentum is away from the prop and you're no longer leaning into it as in this video... from an old taylorcraft pilot.

      same here! ive had access to a certified flight instructor my whole life; my father. and im 25 without my pilots license. i think the biggest thing for me was i didnt feel like there was an aviation niche that i fit into. I knew bush flying existed but i thought it was only the kind of thing people do to get cargo and people and supplies into hard the reach areas. had no idea there was an entire recreational side to it. Trent might have rekindled my desire to be a pilot.

    Rotax engines WILL kick back, as the reason for not curling your fingers around the trailing edge. Also, as with a firearm, always assume it is loaded, (mag(s) hot). Communication between pilot and propper should be very clear and precise. Respecting hand propping should be as important as respecting the decision to land or not to land.

    Back in the day I laid down a chunk of cash on a 5 blade WarpDrive prop for my O-540 powered Air Gator..and quickly found that 1- ground adjustable props are a PITA and 2- They do not do well trying to produce max load static thrust, the blades just bend. Expensive lesson learned part 1. Part 2 was ordering a custom double width Sensenich. Emergency war power restored and no more getting stuck on black sandbars 😄 Thanks for sharing your day with us Trent!

    Hey Trent,
    I've been following your channel for a while now and I've really been inspired, not because of your day-to-day lifestyle, which would be a dream to many people. It's more about of the simple idea of flying which is something I've always wanted to be able to do. However, I am discouraged because of the fact that I am deaf. I feel like I might not be allowed to have a pilot's license or even be accommodated because of my deafness.
    When I watch your videos, I think about myself in the air and wonder about the communication limits FOR ME and other pilots in the sky. Safety in the air is extremely important which is why I would like someone with patience to be able to teach me how to fly (not asking you but that would be too much to ask.. and a dream lmao).
    Generally, growing up, people tend to give up quickly after learning that I am hard of hearing and that I need a bit more accommodation. I imagine having my own pilot's license in the future and would specifically like to fly bush planes or Cessnas and I hope that once I start my journey, I am able to receive such accommodations along the way.
    Keep on inspiring! I will try to continue looking for resources that can hopefully support and guide me through this journey.
