A time travel to Paris in the summer of 1940. A German soldier films the French capital under German occupation with his 8mm camera - and how he enjoys a waffle with ice cream in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower as if he and his comrades were tourists. The suffering that the German invasion meant for the civilian population in France is shown by the footage of the destruction in the town of Bergues.

The German occupation began at 5:30 in the morning of June 14, 1940, when the first German soldiers arrived in Paris at the Porte de la Villette city gate. The Germans moved into a deserted city, about 700,000 Parisians had fled. Under German occupation, the Parisian cityscape changed considerably. The city teemed with foreign uniforms whose wearers were called "green beans" or "gray mice." There were separate cinemas, cafés and about 60 brothels for the German soldiers in Paris. In addition, the time ticks differently: Since the invasion, German time has been in effect, one hour ahead of French time. Under German occupation, the French population had only the choice between resistance and collaboration. The four "black years," as the German occupation in France is still called today, ended in August 1944. On August 25, the French flag was hoisted on the Eiffel Tower and a little later on the Arc de Triomphe, and the bells of Notre Dame Cathedral rang out for the first time since the beginning of the occupation.

Ein deutscher Soldat dreht mit seiner 8mm-Kamera die französische Hauptstadt unter deutscher Besatzung - und wie er im Schatten des Eiffelturms eine Waffel mit Eis genießt, als wären er und seine Kameraden Touristen. Die deutsche Besatzung begann am 14. Juni 1940 morgens um halb sechs, als die ersten deutschen Soldaten Paris am Stadttor Porte de la Villette erreichten. Die Deutschen zogen in eine verlassene Stadt ein, etwa 700.000 Pariser waren geflohen. Unter der deutschen Besatzung änderte sich das Pariser Stadtbild erheblich. In der Stadt wimmelte es von fremden Uniformen, deren Träger «grüne Bohnen» oder «graue Mäuse» genannt wurden. Es gab eigene Kinos, Cafés und etwa 60 Bordelle für die deutschen Soldaten in Paris. Zudem tickten die Uhren anders: Seit dem Einmarsch galt die deutsche Zeit, die der französischen eine Stunde voraus war. Unter deutscher Besatzung blieb der französischen Bevölkerung nur die Wahl zwischen Widerstand und Kollaboration. Die vier «schwarzen Jahre», wie die deutsche Besatzungszeit in Frankreich bis heute genannt wird, endeten im August 1944. Am 25. August wurde die französische Flagge auf dem Eiffelturm und wenig später auf dem Triumphbogen gehisst, zum ersten Mal seit Beginn der Besatzungszeit läuteten die Glocken der Kathedrale von Notre-Dame.

L'occupation allemande a commencé à 5h30 du matin le 14 juin 1940, lorsque les premiers soldats allemands sont arrivés à Paris à la porte de la Villette. Les Allemands s'installent dans une ville déserte, environ 700 000 Parisiens ont fui. Sous l'occupation allemande, le paysage urbain de Paris change considérablement. La ville grouille d'uniformes étrangers dont les porteurs sont appelés "haricots verts" ou "souris grises". Il y avait des cinémas, des cafés et une soixantaine de bordels séparés pour les soldats allemands à Paris. En outre, l'heure tourne différemment : Depuis l'invasion, l'heure allemande est en vigueur, avec une heure d'avance sur l'heure française. Sous l'occupation allemande, la population française n'a que le choix entre la résistance et la collaboration.

The comment that German soldiers eat ice cream at the Eiffel Tower like tourists contains the accusation that they are there at all and not acting as resistance fighters against the Nazi system.
This connotation is not worthy of historical consideration. In all majority structures created by central pressure, there is this (actually frightening) co-acting of the individual.
This is not limited to Germans, but is a constitution of humanity.
A formal historical consideration of the situation should include the reference that the war was declared by England and France. From that point on, both countries had to reckon with acts of war. It should be explained to historically uneducated onlookers that France itself could have been the aggressor at this point. Then you could have shown French soldiers eating ice cream at the Cologne Cathedral... Would they have been good people then.
The Nazis had to be defeated militarily.
The Nazi ideology was insane and dangerous.
But the fellow-travellers and fellow-actors are the same everyday people all over the world who want to belong to a group, seek recognition and want to live. They are the same everywhere and unchangeable. They are people like you and me. Even if we don't like it.
