In this video I go over a few things I do with my tape deck before I track a session with it. this is Not a full alignment and calibration. My machine is already aligned and running great these are some just the steps I take to assure the session will run without issue.
Thanks for watching! and don’t forget to hit subscribe and the bell so you can be notified when I post new videos.
Thank you
Steven Antoniazzi
This was my world in the nineties and late eighties, used to have an mci JH-24 and a Sony MXP 3036, now mostly in the box this video makes want to go back to my old ways, great video!
I keep telling you, do it!!
"Rollin' 2" tape, throwing faders up on the Board. Nothing better!" AGREED.
Yes sir!
That tape sounds incredible!!! The drums sound so tight and the instruments just sound so detailed. Thanks for posting.
That combo is just amazing 👌🏼 😍
So good, tape and console, nothing beats it! Drums sound fantastic, real.
It does sound very good and organic.
The mix is great. Has the old school 70's sound. JH 24 is the machine I learned to track on in the early 80's. I currently have a JH 24 and a 500 series MCI that I'm getting ready to set up in a control room. I hope i can get that sound from the 500 series.
500 series I would say yes you’ll get the sound. 600 series I would say no it won’t be the same.
My 536 is transformerless. I feel like the sound will be too accurate/sterile and not have that amazing buttery goodness I heard from the recording on your video. I've been studying the schematics to see if I could put transformers on some of the channels to have the option. I imagine you have Jensen transformers in yours. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought to do this. Have you heard of anyone doing it with good results? seems like it could be a simple mod.
Absolutely nice guy in person and really a TOP PRO !
I like to look at his fingers at work.
I'm about to buy a vintage JH24 🤟
This is a such a great resource! I’d love to see a supply and take-up motor tension adjustment in action as well.
Thanks! Tension adjustments start at the 22:22 minute in this video.
I'm listening to this through a laptop playing through a Behringer XENYX 1204 mixer going through a Crown D-75A and a pair of Yamaha NS-10M Studio speakers and it sounds great!!! I know I've commented on this many times but I like to hear it once in a while through a new piece of gear to hear what it sounds like.
I have other videos up where I transfer and mix this song you can check out as well.
Great video, Please post more videos on the JH-24 and the console!
so good thanks for sharing, and tape sounds so good, seems to take away all the excessive harshness. Amazing !
Thank you for making this video! I just got a JH24 and really needed this
You have such an amazing studio! I hope you get the business that you deserve!
You are inspiring, thank you for the detailed video!
Yes those drums sound really good. I've always love the MCI sound and thats what im so use to. The sound of those drums reminds me of a session my fathers group did in San fran "Automatt Studios" They had the MCI JH-16/24 24 track Cream top along with a highly modded Harrison 32c with a computer automation Z system. The drums sounded fat and tight "Dead room 70s early 80s feel. Love that sound.
I love that sound.
hi bro, thanks for de video, i buy recently a mci jh24 and its all new for me. im from argentina and this machine its the only ready for work here. i need calibrated and your video its very applicable. I can't wait to get it set up so I can hear it work.
I'll probably be uploading a video later.
Great please share the video and keep me updated!
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Great video legend! Thank you!
This is so very helpful. Thank you!
I love analog because ıt adds sub harmonics, richess, fatness and punchiness to sound.Everything is fat but not boomy ,clear but not harsh. Is not it ?
I like his hat I think my dad has the same hat🤔
Great Video, What calibration tape do you use not sure if you mentioned it in the video?
Great Gear and Information! I am looking for a MCI 24 track myself. My son plays Hendrix and SRV. He is 19 and starting a band. I want to Record in our warehouse. Thanks!
Yea if you track them to 2” tape in a big open warehouse, it’s will sounds great!!!👍
Thanks for all the adjustment tips. Especially tape tension without tentelometer. I have some issues with the DC Offset TP2 And C4 of my JH-16. everything runs fine but tuning R36 Has no effect. Without tape in photo cell I measure -0.098 V TP2 and C4. When tape is moving I measure -0.23 V. TP1/C4 works fine. Maybe you have some advice
(For tp1 /r12 replace IC 4) (For tp2 /r36 replace IC 10) "Be shure to put a original UA741 even better a new old stock IC, no china component.. you will recovery the null -/+ calibration"
@@kikedrum77 Thank you, I‘ll try.
@@squagel6356 If you still cannot set the Reel Null to Zero Volts, you likely have a poor
Ground connection to the Torque Board... Try Grounding the Motherboard by
removing the Torque Board - Power OFF first for 10 seconds !!! -
then finding the Ground point just below the middle Molex points to the Torque Board
on the Right Side... it should be visably labeled 'Ground'. Solder
a wire there and run it to the Chassis Frame on the Right Side where a screw is,
soldering a Spade Lug to the end of the wire and attaching this to the screw.
This will get you a better Ground to the Torque Board, and often solves the
problem with setting the Reel Null to Zero. See the picture: www.analogrules.com/MCIxport001.html
@@kikedrum77 thanks for advice and link to analogrules. Trimmer still doesn‘t work after changing ICs. I‘m in exchange with an technical Engineer to solve the problem.
Hey! You do not adjust the tension of the tape using a Tentelmeter for two inches tape? You go by eye setting?
When adjusting tape tension, if your tape tension is not calibrated correctly, how can you record a tone and not have it increase or decrease to later calibrate the tension?? Did you have a reel with 1K already recorded?
Having a issue with 2 track mci playing slow and when i hit the stop button ,it keeps on rolling, came from mara machines in nashville, thoughts? thanks in advance john
Can I please use your voice as a sample?!?
Of course you can!!!
Did you ever found the artist?
Were you ever able to track the band down? This song is too good to just throw away (I'm speaking from my vision of what the band's perspective should be).
This is fantastic and thank you but during the first adjustments you never stated what exactly the target voltages were supposed to be. You kind of just offhandedly mention "ok that looks about right, yeah 55.... or OK 45 there OK now...." Could you be more specific or I should have a manual I guess to follow along.
I did state exactly what it should be in the video.
@@RiotHomeRecording Sorry Steve but if you watch the video you start off saying (I paraphrase) "OK R12 well its right there at 70mv ok so I'll adjust it and there 55mv perfect now we adjust R36 ok there 45mv." It just isn't clear what the target values you are aiming for are in your dialog. Am I wrong? Thanks again for the video because any help is appreciated in learning about this fine machine. Best Regards, Tod
@@MrMuppetbaby no worries, it’s a null range not a hard number. around the 1:20 time stamp I say you want to be between +/- 1volt. So as long as you null out less then one volt it does not matter if its positive or negative. 1 Volt equals 1000 millivolts so if I’m at 55mv or 600mv I’m still in that range. I should of been more clear in the video. I apologize about that. I was going to make more videos showing how I calibrate my JH-24 but I realize there’s people out there that can do a much better job at explaining it.
I hope this helps
Steve
@@RiotHomeRecording Thanks Steve I didn't realize the tolerances were that wide although you did mention 1 volt. I seem to remember seeing the reels kind of creep at one point on a JH machine a long time ago and wondered why. Thanks again very cool that you are keeping analog alive. Look forward to more videos on your gear! Best, Tod :)
Hey, man. You forgot do demagnetize the heads and tape path. One pass of the calibration tape in a magnetized head or tape path and it will be destroyed. Serious issue, serious fault, my dear.
Wrong!
@@RiotHomeRecording "Wrong" meaning...?
@ meaning you're wrong
@@crappyatlife and why I am wrong? Did the Maxwell"s and Gauss"s laws got changed?
@ yes they did. You just didn't get the memo
