Why would the guy rescind his application just because he was no longer "the fourth" and what's with the half-smirk about "re-application"? IMHO, the guy "rescinding" was always acting for someone else, especially considering him mentioning that he wouldn't be on premises much.
Removing alcohol would cause a lot of natives to die from withdrawals, but needs to be done. But as soon as the Native made a comment about white people I lost all validity for his statements
No they'd be fine. thats all B.S. that they would die. Its a two week withdrawal and then they would not crave alcohol as much. So as soon as the native made a valid comment about white people you lost all validity??? What about they lost validity a long time ago when your people starting making archaeological sites to dig up their grandparents??? You need to check yourself.
Yvette just lost all credibility. You don't even understand or acknowledge the effects of alcohol withdrawal. Heavy alcoholics often die during detox. Also you just made a racist comment. "your people?" I assume you mean colonists that have zero relation to myself?
Not only do I understand it. I lived it through my father as a co-dependent. My entire family went through hell, through his constant abuse, through many fights and sleepless nights, but I luuuuvvved my father. He meant the world to me. But I guarantee you that if there weren't any liquor stores placed on every dam corner of the Lower East side of New York City he would not have been an alcoholic. He worked hard and drank and smoked to his death and he died in my arms. He had actually stopped drinking after my mother passed away and he went through some psychological things but then he just totally after two weeks stopped drinking and I helped him because he was now MY responsibility. I took care of him, I bought him his groceries, cleaned the house and protected my dad. Back to the native Americans, Forget about the withdrawal, get the liquor stores OUT OF THERE. Put treatment centers and hospitals they can get to. All of the natives would not die from withdrawals. They would die from something else that is related to alcohol, such as cirrhosis of the liver due to unsafe consumption of alcohol. The liver helps to purify the blood but the alcohol turns the alcohol depletes all the vitamins from your body. In my fathers case he drank and smoked habitually which turned into aggressive cancer.
Banning alcohol sales in Whiteclay isn't going to fix anything. One of my friends was a Yupik Indian. His hometown was only accessible by plane or boat for part of the year. Alcohol was banned, and anything brought in was inspected. Despite this it was still overrun with alcoholism, and it wasn't uncommon for drunk people to freeze to death because they passed out in the snow.
That guy was 100% right about personal responsibility, people in Pine Ridge need to get it togather And take responsibility for their own actions. They are all adults, and if Pine Ridge is overcome with alcoholics then they need to take control of that problem themselves on the reservation. Its ok to drink, but when people drink irresponsibity or abuse the privilage, a larger enforcement or law or changes needs to happen. There are many problems on this reservation ( not just alcohol) Most people there do not make an effort to live a good life and work toward changes, they accept the curruption or give into it. Terrible law enforcement, Tribal council curruption, if those 2 things can improve, (at the least) there will be major changes.
How can you hold them accountable to begin with? They have no assets. Nothing at stake to lose so your question will continue to be vicariously redundant
buddy says he was in the army and doesnt want to call himself a marine anymore ? 100 percent has never been in either or he would know theres a massive difference between the two lmao
So if the sale of alcohol is banned in Whiteclay, what is the next closest town that sells alcohol, and will they want to ban the sale of alcohol there too? Maybe they should ban the sale of alcohol in the state of Nebraska, or even better the entire United States, that worked well before. We live in a society that more and more wants to blame others for our problems, and less and less want to take responsibility for our own actions. I myself understand addiction to alcohol, have had problems with it for many years, but I also understand that it is my fault ,and my own doing that have put me through it, I dont blame the bars, the stores, the media, or the manufacturers I blame myself. I feel for all the people involved, I really do, but maybe if we put more responsibility on the individuals, and gave them less opportunities to say I cant help it, or its not my fault, things just might start to change.
+andy green - No. It does not help anyone to see these enormous problems as having black and white solutions. They want to re-instate the 50-mile alcohol-free buffer zone, not a NE or national ban of alcohol. They want tribal alcoholism treatment and the funding to license, build and hire for that. They want more tribal police and the laws already in Whiteclay enforced. You are aware, I'm sure, that many US communities - maybe most - now have laws disallowing bartenders to serve alcohol to people who are already drunk. I know in OR and CA, that's a good way to lose your liquor license. That would be a place to start in Whiteclay, which has that law, and that was talked about in the film. I'll bet you could poll the drunks in the street of Whiteclay and ask whose fault it is. I'll also bet that 99% say it's their own fault. One big problem is that aboriginal peoples worldwide have a completely different - which is to say much worse - biological and psychological relationship with alcohol than caucasians do. Kudos to you for fighting your fight, Andy. All the best.
We did this, we need to fux ut. If you are not Native, then your part of the problem. Be respectful, at the very least. You are a Christian correct?! And tht is exactly the reason I am not.
as far as I know, nothing has changed. This film was made in 2003, I was in Whiteclay in October 2007 and it was still the same. A crying shame, and again a display of the power of the wealthy!
Its not that simple Julie. Ban alcohol sales in Whiteclay and you will have smugglers galore. The answer is make people to be accountable for their own actions.

You cannot become an alcoholic without your own permission. True. However if one knows anything about the disease, he or she will tell you it is hereditary and there are other reasons people drink aside from wanting to be an alcoholic. How was your neighborhood in San Francisco, anything like Pine Ridge? An Indian reservation I believe is still on the books as being a prisoner of war camp with one of the highest poverty rates in the US. By protesting, these noble people haven't given up.
Let me first say, I have red ancestors and white ancestors. I was born and raised in San Francisco. I have no prejudice. None. What I'd like to ask is this: why has such a noble people given up? Given in? Blamed someone else? No one forces another person to buy and/or consume alcohol. Once personal responsibility is recognized, embraced, and accepted, there is no blame and no victim, only recovery and growth. You cannot become an alcoholic without your own permission.
As an indigenous person who Strongly Support Economic Feasibility for all Sovereign Tribes...Alcohol Prevention is more critical to Reservations. I come from my own Tribal Community and the decision to sell Alcohol or Tobacco was a democratic decision I detested nevertheless it was approved. A clothing mall, a nail salon, a hobby lobby shop, art supply store, school supplies, shoe store, grocery store, all with low prices that beat the prices of alcohol. This would create jobs for those who choose a better way of living. Lifting up the self esteem of human beings who are constantly put down.
Who would fund these? It takes money to open a business. And the infrastructure is so faulty on the reservation because it is so isolated - many don't even have electricity or plumbing in their homes - to get it installed into a store would take more $$$ than what is available.
I love the the american indians but you have it within yourselves to protect yourselves I do not have to frink you do not have to drink it with in each individuals
This just breaks my heart that Indians are still disposable. Yes this was 9 years ago but I bet this is still true. These are people lives it does not matter dark, white and color they are lives. God loves all and he cries for so many.
There is 1 very low capacity program with a "waiting list" for days, many want to go and heal themselves but there's not enough room due the severe lack of funding. (Around the time this was published)
To the Indian Chief; Think on how to lure people away from alcohol. Alcohol is not the problem. Perhaps the lack of opportunities in the reservation pushes people to drink. Put the reservation community onto something productive. This doesn't make the white, purple, or green people look bad, because they sell alcohol. This just showcases the lack of leadership in the reservation.
I guess we are living a double standard. How many lives have the native casinos ruined? Should we shut them down? How many people have died smoking Native American tobacco? Should we shut the casinos down because they contribute to people with gambling addictions? I guess its okay if they ruin peoples lives but if the shoe is on the other foot we have to shut them down and blame them for their problems. Where are they tribal police at the edge of the rez inspecting what goes into the rez?
I pray to JESUS CHRIST please help WHITECLAY! alcohol is the devil!! Stay STRONG BROTHERS AN SISTERS OF WHITECLAY......Dont kno how it is now ,,,but i still pray fer youll!!!
The solution is the same solution for many many problems, at the beginning. Parents work your problems out and stay together. Raise your kids with love and spend as much time with them as possible. Work hard and your children will do the same because leading by example is the only way. It's just like trying to be healthy. The solution is simple but takes some time and effort.
To all those who are drinking You must wake up and be healthy there is no one who can do it for you, you are bringing your people down, it will take time but it Will make a difference and your people will Regain their strength and Heal, pull together don’t drink and these places will shut down, you hold the key

There's no federal law that requires Indians to stay on a reservation. So their plight is by choice. And at this time in our PC country, Indians would get preferential treatment if they needed education and finding a career. And no one is forcing them to drink. Can flattenin' dudes! Put a piece of plywood on top of 'em, THEN drive over!
At 55:08 it is clear as day that the man applying for a license and the commissioner both know they were both acting on behalf of the original store owner who was kicked out. Why would the guy rescind his application just because he was no longer "the fourth" and what's with the half-smirk about "re-application"? IMHO, the guy "rescinding" was always acting for someone else, especially considering him mentioning that he wouldn't be on premises much.
+kirbycon - Right, I noticed that, too. What a scam, all the way around.
Thank you for this documentary. I pray that the rights of your people will prevail over what my people think they have a right to.
Yvette Jones GOD BLESS UR MOTHER AN FATHER....,UR SO RIGHT,,,THANK U 4 THE MESSAGE
BAM! take that lesson, taydrum.
How were they getting alcohol? Making their own?
@@shazzorama Some made their own, some smuggled it in. When there's a demand then unfortunately people will find a way.
Over Pine Ridge to Wounded Knee there's blood on the ground as far as you see......
That guy was 100% right about personal responsibility, people in Pine Ridge need to get it togather
And take responsibility for their own actions. They are all adults, and if Pine Ridge is overcome with alcoholics then they need to take control of that problem themselves on the reservation.
Its ok to drink, but when people drink irresponsibity or abuse the privilage, a larger enforcement or law or changes needs to happen.
There are many problems on this reservation ( not just alcohol)
Most people there do not make an effort to live a good life and work toward changes, they accept the curruption or give into it. Terrible law enforcement, Tribal council curruption, if those 2 things can improve, (at the least) there will be major changes.
then take your alcohol and fuck off mate..
They are a broken people in deep despair. And can't genticaly digest alcohol.
Alcohol is poison - I am thankful for the AA program and pray all people who suffer and find a way to the program and spirituality of your people.
So there is no one on pine ridge being held accountable ???
No, liberals think of these people as helpless.
How can you hold them accountable to begin with? They have no assets. Nothing at stake to lose so your question will continue to be vicariously redundant
This is them being held accountable. Their actions are off-res, therefore the enforcement must also start off-res.
buddy says he was in the army and doesnt want to call himself a marine anymore ? 100 percent has never been in either or he would know theres a massive difference between the two lmao
He was drunk and had no idea what he was talking about - rambling.
Over - 11 thousand cans of beer a day, where does the money come from to pay for the alcohol?
Our government 🤬
Are illegal drug market
The problem is, is the free money. The free funds every month is the enabler
Sorry...just don't buy the beer than!!! Sounds like a community ( tribe)..problem to me!
All the best.
andy green
IF THEY WANT LIQUOR JUST GIVE IT TO THEM...theyre grown if it kills them, so frikken what!!!
These people need to take responsibility for their alcohol consumption..
They are not forced to drink ...
Think about the children
We did this, we need to fux ut. If you are not Native, then your part of the problem. Be respectful, at the very least. You are a Christian correct?! And tht is exactly the reason I am not.
as far as I know, nothing has changed. This film was made in 2003, I was in Whiteclay in October 2007 and it was still the same. A crying shame, and again a display of the power of the wealthy!
People before profits. Nuff said.
Its not that simple Julie. Ban alcohol sales in Whiteclay and you will have smugglers galore. The answer is make people to be accountable for their own actions.
Perhaps they should draw the beer trucks into a circle and wait for John Wayne.
yeah, I had a friend that he is full UTE India in Utah but sad that he always drinking and he not really pay attention about his kids and his girlfriend and he not really listen to the people.. he just focus to drinking all the times and sleep on the street.. i tried to help him to stop drinking but he can't and he just lost everything.. he just keep drinking and sleep on the street.. and plus, my other friend that he is full UTE India in Utah and he dead because of drinking... how suck is that ??
Oh he never spent that much time in clay but he knows all about it. Guess he's an authority figure.
22:58 town council meeting, man in background cracking some wood....epic.....HES THINKING,WHO CARES....lol
he was probably thinking “I can use a nice cold beer right now”
the real truth is that alcohol is not allowed on the res but they on the res want it and will get it no matter what
They should force the owners of these "Establishments" to use their 34 million a year in revenue to OPEN UP AND FUND Alcohol treatment centers. This is tragic, and a shame. I am native, And I am proud of my people....
I relate to this as my younger brother died at 27 due to Alcohol Poisoning. I pray for all indigenous families and others who lost loved ones to this terrible addiction. God Bless this entire community who want to keep all people from the risky behavior that exists here. 🙇🏻♀️🙏🏽🤔🔥🕊🔑🔍🇺🇸
The problem is the drinker, not the drink
I have no knowledge on that matter, however it makes no difference to the fact that the drinker is the problem and not the drink.
The problem is what makes the drinker a drinker!
So what stops a different town from setting up another liquor store close to the reservation to fill the demand? Should they be shut down too?
That's the only town.
@@diane9247
Now the drunks have to go down the road to rushville ne, and they do exactly that(not to mention the burgeoning trade in bootleg booze on the Rez)
my people have struggled with alcoholism since the white people showed up on our shores i myself struggle with alcohol. I pray for our people that we have the strength to one day say no to that spirit in that bottle.
No fucking hammer. Just kickbacks. You can see it on their faces. They lie with a smile.
They should just end prohibition at least the money wound stay there. And I bet alcoholism wound decline
WELL YOU CRATED A MONSTER...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!!!!
458 cases= 11,000 cans
Money making town
As long as the state of nebraska is earning their blood money, they will NEVER assist the people of Pine Ridge.
Rise up, beautiful people, rise up.
I love the the american indians but you have it within yourselves to protect yourselves
I do not have to frink you do not have to drink it with in each individuals
This just breaks my heart that Indians are still disposable. Yes this was 9 years ago but I bet this is still true. These are people lives it does not matter dark, white and color they are lives. God loves all and he cries for so many.
They are dumb and lazy
Just because its sold doesn't mean you have to buy it. That is freedom ! Freedom of choice! Stop making bad choices!
Are there no AA meetings and programs there??
There is 1 very low capacity program with a "waiting list" for days, many want to go and heal themselves but there's not enough room due the severe lack of funding. (Around the time this was published)
Wow! I didn’t know it was this bad! Praying for things to get better for them.
To the Indian Chief;
Think on how to lure people away from alcohol. Alcohol is not the problem. Perhaps the lack of opportunities in the reservation pushes people to drink. Put the reservation community onto something productive. This doesn't make the white, purple, or green people look bad, because they sell alcohol. This just showcases the lack of leadership in the reservation.
Take the alcohol out of the store and replace it with magic mushrooms peyote weed and DMT real indian medicine
We have come to take back our land. Walking feather ❤🐳
I would like nothing more than to see that . What's your plan?
I guess we are living a double standard. How many lives have the native casinos ruined? Should we shut them down? How many people have died smoking Native American tobacco? Should we shut the casinos down because they contribute to people with gambling addictions? I guess its okay if they ruin peoples lives but if the shoe is on the other foot we have to shut them down and blame them for their problems. Where are they tribal police at the edge of the rez inspecting what goes into the rez?
Yeah, thank you very much for uploading this. I appreciate it.
How do they make them drink? Good deals?
I pray to JESUS CHRIST please help WHITECLAY! alcohol is the devil!! Stay STRONG BROTHERS AN SISTERS OF WHITECLAY......Dont kno how it is now ,,,but i still pray fer youll!!!
The solution is the same solution for many many problems, at the beginning. Parents work your problems out and stay together. Raise your kids with love and spend as much time with them as possible. Work hard and your children will do the same because leading by example is the only way. It's just like trying to be healthy. The solution is simple but takes some time and effort.
@kylem1112 As a native, medical marijuana is one reason I am NOT an alcoholic.
Not because of alcohol but the choice to drink it ! No one forces anyone to drink it!
To all those who are drinking You must wake up and be healthy there is no one who can do it for you, you are bringing your people down, it will take time but it Will make a difference and your people will Regain their strength and Heal, pull together don’t drink and these places will shut down, you hold the key
Two words personal responsibility ! How can it be the beers fault?
and you think you are going to get an intelligent answer to such a stupid question....
randall schutte It's not the beers fault of course. Not a stupid question, it's a natural progression of thought. It's a generational depression and low self-esteem problem. No excuses tho
randell.. remove the cause of the problem, not trying to make profit off these beauriful people..give them back their dignity, they are worth it if given the opportunity
Compliant white folk who knit together this system have no idea they're being controlled through alcohol? Of course they don't. Around here the people who make wine hold a high status in the community and no one cares that alcohol is consumed every day in the park next to the govt controlled outlet.
When you have stuff and live on stolen land no one cares much how dysfunctional you are---how do you think they manage to hold on to their stuff when they're staggering around in secret ? The settler sellers in Whiteclay say there's no racism? Some scary shit that greed business.
No one said anything about building a treatment center.
On part 3 I like that the time stamp was 23:11 or for some of us 11:11 , any thoughts , anyone . Change can happen .
It is a growing concern even for us Canadians is once this election has come to pass, that we along with the majority of US of A citizens. Is that we will all be In one big Reservation, Russel Means said it best and that may become a reality sooner then later.
i agree something needs to be done to help the situation but isnt it a double standard to tell somebody they cant drink if they choose to its not only an american right but a human right to do what you choose to your body and or life "as long as it doesnt affect others"
But it does affect others, every single child born affected by fetal alcohol syndrome. They are the ones with no real choice here.
@@SandraCrossan1974 Not only the children born with fetal alcohol syndrome... But also alcohol leading to domestic violence, crime, unemployment, vehicle accidents - it doesn't only affect who is drinking, but their family and community.
I can appreciate this issue, and even back it. However, I see no reason to include the bit about somebody who volunteered for the Marine Corps, then bashes the country and our flag. You divide, then you lose white support, which you need!
@Jock Right of conquest. They did it, people in the 19th century did it.
If they can’t handle there alcohol they should stay the hell away from it
There's no federal law that requires Indians to stay on a reservation. So their plight is by choice. And at this time in our PC country, Indians would get preferential treatment if they needed education and finding a career. And no one is forcing them to drink. I personally made the conscious decision to not drink when I was in my teens. It was easy.
They need make some kinda work jobs for there people . Make building build arts and Crafts sell them world wide , I know easier said then done . The chiefs need to do a better job for there people and i know it is not easy . The spirits gods are awake now and the time has come . A change is about to come .
Indians HATE work more than they hate the white man.
Geez this issue sucks for the Natives
At one time alcoholism was not a problem here on the western hemisphere.
I'd like to help but don't know how.
Ditto
Native Americans/ Indian blood hasn't the same immunity to Alcohol as the European races.
White America is this, omg .please give your neigbours a compliment every time you meet them so that they feel a worth,.but more than that they dont feel that they need to escape their lot. The lokota peoples give me hope that elders really care and share even though their hands are tied. Together we stand divided we fall. From darkness their may come a light{bob marley}grow your own food,THE AMERICANS WILL EAT AND EAT. teach your own because you CAN..LASTLEY TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HABITS YOURSELVES [ELDERS]take control.
If they shut down all the stores it would be harder for people to go shopping for other things also wouldn't it I'm just saying
MY GRANDMOTHER WAS 4 FEET 11 INCHES TALL..SHE LIVED AS A MEXICAN WOMEN...BECAUSE TOLERANCE FOR THE AMERICAN INDIAN WAS UNBEARABLE! SHE WAS ENROLLED IN ONE OF THOSE EDUCATIONAL BOARDING SCHOOLS. MY MOTHER WOULD NOT TEACH ME SPANISH BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT AN ACCENT WOULD NEGATE MY SURVIVAL IN THESE ENGLISH DOMINATED SOCIETIES. ALCOHOL KILLED HER WHEN I WAS TWENTY! HER BODY DECOMPOSED FOR A FEW DAYS-WEEK.. I CLEANED UP MY MOTHERS ROTTING CORPSE,SKIN, MAGGOTS, HAIR WHILE THEY BILLED CREAMATION FEES.
excuse me? so its whiteclays fault that people drink?
Pine Ridge needs to allow Beer sales on the reservation to put the Whiteclay stores out of business...Start a brew-pub on the reservation and add some slot machines to improve revenues...at least some Indians will get wealthy.
They haven't given in. This is about the fight to stop the sale of alcohol. Addiction is not as simple as you make it out to be, especially in the NA culture.
Save are native tribes today and are mother earth I pray 🙏 Ojibway stand with you all there
Nebraska can easily shut down the alcohol stores. The state just benefits off of the sale of alcohol. And alcohol, is the foundation of the american economy.
Choices my man
One fourth of the way into this video, I thought this is racism being covered by lawyers.
