  • This was a short 3 day backpacking trip in the central Superstition Wilderness in Arizona in early January 2021. The route starts and ends from the Tortilla/Peter's Trailhead, which involves a 3 mile road walk in and out. I took Hoolie Bacon trail out to Brads Water on the 1st night. Then I took Red Tanks Canyon to Fraser Canyon, did a pretty tough ascent up Woodbury & JF Trails to Tortilla Pass next to LaBarge Mountain. On the last day I took the very scenic JF Trail back to the car. This is a fairly grueling route on the 2nd day. I would only recommend it to very fit hikers due to the elevation gain, rugged terrain and lack of water. However, if you are up for all that - the views and diversity of scenery are worth it!

I love your filming of your hikes.
Especially, that you have the beautiful sounds of nature and your hiking shoes crunching through the wilderness paths.🤙🏼

Appreciate it! Crunching through brush is my favorite sound out there besides flowing water and it's important to capture it as part of the experience.

Problem with me if I went out there. Id want to take a xhovel and pick, then I'd be on every mountain trying to see what I could find. Gold, Silver, ancient ruins and what ever else I could see interesting...

January in the Sups would be good because it is not rattlesnake season. What is best time to hike the Sups without rattlesnakes? November through March? What is your pack size in cm and weight of your pack when packed? You have to take some water. What temp range 28 f to 60?

"The most ultralight set-up I could cobble together", you KNOW your cook pot was proud 🤣, because, you know, it's ULTRALIGHT

    • @WildlandExplorer
      @WildlandExplorer  3 года назад +1

Jokes on you man I didn't even bring that thing this time. Because what I brought was even lighter than the one stamped with "ULTRALIGHT" on it. 😂

Very cool adventure. Sad to see the drought conditions, hopefully we will see a good amount of rain this week out there.

Rain is a comin! Maybe a creek or two will actually flow for the first time in a year.

Saturday my wife and I did an overnight near Whitlow Canyon from Peralta Trailhead. It was real sad to see all the fire damage out there. Just wanted to say thanks for all the content. It gives us ideas when planning out hikes.

Love that area - neat canyon walls. I think that spot got hit by fire two years in a row now. Nature is starting to take back the upper coffee flat trail east of there. All canyon walking now.

Really look forward to your videos. I noticed your pack is different from previous ones. I’m still having a difficult time finding one that works for me. Can you comment on what brand/model it is?

Hi Marc, and thank you! The pack in this video is an Osprey Levity 45 (size med). I've had it a few years now and have shown it more often on earlier videos. I think it's a great pack - but if you look around at reviews it is a polarizing piece of gear. My main criticisms would be that the brain is not removable and the side pockets are.. unusual. But they still work with narrow bottles. Other than that, no complaints. It is way more durable than I thought it would be. I take it out anytime I'm able to get by with a sub-25 lb pack including food and water. I've been getting more requests for gear videos lately so maybe I'll start with that one if I can get around to it.

Hey there. I was wondering if you were planning any overnight or a couple days hikes? I am wanting to test out my zpacks duplex and could use some pointers before starting my AT thru hike.

Sorry I didn't see your comment till recently! Hope you sorted out your Duplex - let me know if you have any questions. Hope your AT hike goes well!

Hey, so I’m still looking for some time on trail. This is my last week of work. I won’t leave AZ until mid April. Let me know if you’re heading out for a few days before then. Thanks 🙏

Sorry for the delayed reply - for whatever reason I don't get notifications past the initial comment. I'd totally be up for trail company. I have some long trips in late March & early April out of state but in between then I am mostly open - so there might be a weekend or so where schedules align. Let's discuss off youtube if you don't mind: wildwesthikes at gmail dot com
      Thanks!

Just found your channel this weekend and have watched several of your videos! I backpacked the superstitions extensively as a kid in the 80s so your vids brought back lots of great memories. I'm curious what your process or strategy is for deciding which backpack to take? I noticed you cycle between a couple different Osprey packs. Also curious what your pack normally weighs when you go out for a couple of days. Thanks!

Hi there, really depends on gear bulk. Most trips over 5 days and/or anytime I have to go beyond 6 liters water carries I haul the Exos. My gear maxes out the grey Levity 45 around 4 days food. But I also carry camera gear. Other people can fit more. Pack weight varies so much, anywhere from 19 lbs to over 50lbs. Most 3 day trips somewhere between 25-30 lbs I’d guess including food + h2o.
