Fusion is very hard to do. This is a bunch of remarkable performers--each in their own idiom--but this was more like a juxtapostion than a blending. Abhay-ji's performance of Gujari Todi was inspired, and the use of trap and other percussion did give it a contemporary energy. The blues ballad was wonderfully rendered by Nikita-ji, but again was totally separate. The sargam tihai with both singers at the end was impressive, but the blues coda seemed artificially tacked on.
I am a trained sitarist and khayal singer, as well as a performer of Western classical and folk, and am a composer. I am STILL trying to figure out how to make exciting fusion, and can claim no artistic high ground in that regard. We have to keep trying until we hit on the solution.
So in short, I will say this was not like so much of the vague, New Age type fusion out there--the musicianship is brilliant--but the compositional aspect does not yet satisfy me. I look forward to seeing other performances by this group. I am positive that with a little work they will knock my socks off.

So true that we haven't probably worked out how successful fusion works. But it's a journey and kudos to all those who keep trying.
My personal favourite is malhar jam by Agam. Closest to what I'd call successful fusion. Interesting that in that number the integration is attempted between a single genre of music (Carnatic classical) and multiple instruments from different genres. Works for me, in some magical mystical way.
Agree, though I am just a lay listener. The initial transition from Jazz to Hindustani was seamless, but the Hindustani-Jazz/Blues transitions in the second half appeared disjointed. Abhay - am I glad I found you through this song!
Great analysis! very well put. I feel our Bollywood music directors have done a lot of fusion without labeling it. Would you consider Dil ki girah kohl do, ai dil Kahan Teri manzil, piya tu kaahe rutha re - as fusion music? I feel they fuse western and Indian styles much smoother compared to the new-agey fusion.
Do you have any recommendations to listen to as a good fusion work... I share the sane thoughts with you and looking for that music, as well as traditional/symphonic too.
