I laid some old tires down and ran an electric fence wire on top of them, held down with bricks. It kept the birds out. I did this on three rows of the twelve rows. I removed them when the corn got about four inches high.

One reason people don't plant the whole potato for sweets is because unlike an irish potato the sweet potato will continue to grow the tuber that was from last year. You will get a massive gnarled up potato. That isn't much good for anything. Another reason would be that sweet potatoes really need warm soil (75 degrees or better yet 85 degrees to grow sprouts properly.) If you planted the tubers whole or in seed pieces then got a week of cool cloudy weather they are likely to rot in the soil, so you need to start them in a stable warm environment. Lastly they say that the sweet potatoes harbor viruses that they pick up over the year(s). It is said that the slips without the tuber attached are less likely to carry along those viruses. Not sure of first hand proof about that one but that is what the scientists say.

    • @Jtwes

Great video Joey and family! I'm glad Leno asked about planting "cut sweet potatoes". I had some sweet potatoes last year that started growing eyes. So I took all six of them and planted them in the garden. They grew beautiful vines and I expected a great harvest. I dug them up about 3-4 months later. I had 5 sweet potatoes that were half eaten by grubs. I found out few months ago on Danny's channel that you have to grow them from slips. The slips are grown from pieces of sweet potatoe. I don't know why they won't grow from pieces. BTW Pa want's me to keep an eye out for an old Farmall "transplanter". Apparently he had one back in the 50's along with a "hydro creeper" than ran off the PTO. He said it would plant about 1 row and then over heat and be useless. Did the deer alarm system do any good last year? The deer have eaten all of the watermelon and cantaloupe plants that came up at the farm. Working on the carb and battery connections on the SA. Gas tank should be back from being cleaned and sealed next week.
