    The main difference between 28PL and MMDW is that 28PL addresses one
    solitary aspect:
    SHOW DON'T TELL
    We actually SEE the mane five SIT HER DOWN AND TALK WITH HER AS A GROUP.
    And when that fails they have Pinkie confront her one on one. That way
    it doesn't feel like they all just jumped in on the plan without
    thinking of other option. IN MMDW They simply assumed that she wouldn't
    listen instead of at least trying to talk with her first. While in the
    28PL at least then they have the excuse that they DID try a different
    method, , it's better to try and fail to talk with them someone instead
    of automatically assuming that you'd fail and going with a more drastic
    method, otherwise things sometimes can and will spiral out of control.
    And at least when you do try the first method you can actually have the
    "I tried to tell you" excuse backing you up.
    Was RD in wrong?
    YES, there were points in the episode where lives were at risk and her
    showboating could've been saved for later.
    But the mane five were ALSO in the wrong, and the way they conveyed
    their message was very poor and came off as VERY mean-spirited and
    hypocritical.
    There was a scene or two that showcased them five trying to talk with her (alone, not while she was basking in the glory with the crowds) and then tried again maybe later after she saved the baby, showed her not bothering to listen, then their later actions would've been more acceptable and understdable.
    So bottom line, Mare Do-Well is worse that 28 Pranks Later.

    OMG this is Hilarious!!!
    Wait, so if this episode never had RD boasting about herself thus making her friends try to create a hero for the town in order teach RD a lesson, then we wouldn't have had that improved character of RD in Wonderbolt Academy? Makes sense.

    So Applejack, Pinkie Pie and Twilight each play Mare Do Well in this episode just to teach Rainbow Dash a lesson of what being a real hero meant to act. Well they also succed of making her jealous and very annoyed so I'm suprise that Rainbow Dash wasn't really very angry or furious with her friends for making her feel like a fool.
    If this is a deleted scene then Rainbow Dash would tell her friend " I can't believe you all would do this to me, I though we're friends?" "But you made me look like a fool in front all ponies, take away my reputation as hero of Ponyville and I have nothing now because of all of you". Then Rainbow Dash leave the scene as she said that she never wanted to talk to any of them again which leave Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy and Twilight upset and still annoyed with Rainbow Dash even more that she still haven't learn her lesson.
    But this is a little kid's show so the writers and directors would allow this scene as it would upset the young viewers.

    Yeah sorry, Firebrand's analysis of this episode made more sense. Rainbow being an action-oriented character just talking wouldn't breach her then overinflated ego, especially since she doesn't even know the meaning of the word AUTO-biography. They're not saying they're better than her, they're trying to show her however indirectly and admittedly unsuccessfully at first because...Rainbow Dash, what it means to be a true hero.

    It's sad that I can't agree fully with Voice, although there was a few points I can see. It's not the best, but there are some points that I think are just up to interpretation, such as the Sugarcube Corner scene, where there is a difference between malice and "a taste of your own medicine" feel.
    However, Id have to ask Voice: How would you have made a Rainbow Dash episode where she would learn humility from her friends? Im not asking for a full monologue, just a basic concept that, from your opinion, would have been better than this episode.

    Yeah, Yeah, I'm late but I will just chalk it up to nostalgia mixed with knowledge learning. Besides that I want to say something. Them bragging about their own accomplishments does not lower her ego. Ego is gained through you thinking and acting as if you are better than who you are, it is lowered when you fail to meet that expectation. At that point, her ego was already gone and what they ended up doing was building up her spite and jealousy which ends up to what happens after that scene. So let me propose a different ending/scene. Rainbow gets to her dark cloud a lot earlier and does the exact same scene. After that she sees a group of fillies that are playing pretend as Mare Do Well. They are both attempting to rescue a toy/doll/whatever. One filly says that he will get the "thing" because he is so strong. The other filly gets the dolly first, Filly 1 is annoyed about how it was unfair, Filly 2 says in that in that mocking voice that kids use that maybe if Filly 1 wasn't looking at his strength so much, maybe he would have grabbed it. Rainbow notices this and wonders if that is what she was missing. An incident happens and she goes for it but fails to Mare Do Well. She then attempts to get better (training montage I suppose) and then continues again when another incident happens. The blimp accident the first time happens again and sonce Rainbow is now trained and focused on helping is faster than Fluttershy and saves Random Pony. Celebration happens as usual and she gets the idea and rushes off to Twilight's house and asks if she can write a lesson that is where she talks about said lesson more in solid words. Her friends joke about bragging and leave the treehouse. The door closes behind them and a side closet opens dropping several Mare Do Well costumes. The episode written this way would let the lesson go a lot more subtly than it being shoved and has her learning it a lot more permanently. The fillies playing mirrors what she lost at the beginning and the training cements that to. That she was missing the things that were important and by ignoring herself and focusing on her ego and wasn't helping her. If you read through this thanks. Critize if you wish because it helps me learn more.

    I'm going to be honest with you. I didn't like the defense not just because I hate the episode, but also because the defense was incredibly lackluster. They sounded bored and just overall really dull in this video. CR of Familiar Faces said it best in that in the third act of the episode, the others should have fought for the spotlight and Dashie had to bring them down to reason. A lot of comics and fanfics go into more detail on how the episode could have and should have gone. We're just beating a dead Gilda. Moral of the Video: Don't collab unless you sound interesting. Mr. Reason, another collab well done.

    For me, I would say the problem is that they are bragging about their accomplishments. I wouldn't have hated it as much if Twilight was complimenting Applejack's part instead of her own. Then it's not nearly as hypocritical.
    Also, I think it's pretty bad that they went for humble by humiliation first instead of talking to her. It comes off more as a first resort than a no choice or last resort.
    I also question the reason they had to brag about themselves. The town's already fawning over Mysterious Mare Do Well, so why do they have to brag? It comes off as very self serving and patting their own backs. All they had to do is go, "Isn't it great she does all these good things and never brags about it? She's so humble..." or something along those lines.
    All I get from their bragging is that they're proud of the stuff they did and were involved in. That they are just more awesome than Rainbow Dash. That's all.

    Ok I agree with Master Code and Voice. The five of the Mane 6 give dash a reality check to make herself think she was being a jerk. HOWEVER WHEN GIVING THAT REALITY CHECK. IT PUT RAINBOW DASH AT DEPRESSION AND ANGER. They could have just talked to her and BOASTING ABOUT YOURSELF AND NOT THINKING OF YOUR ACTIONS TO WHERE YOU ARE BRAGGING MEANS YOU ARE PUTTING YOURSELF IN DASH'S PLACE AND BOOSTING YOUR EGO THAT YOU DID NOT HAVE. It makes no damn sense that the message is to be a hero when not bragging. WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY BALLING UP YOUR OWN MESSAGE AND THROWING IT IN THE TRASH. THE FIVE OF THE MANE SIX WERE BRAGGING ABOUT THEMSELVES BEING THE BEST HERO. SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT. THIS IS THE WORST EPISODE EVER WITH A BADLY WAY TO EXECUTE THE MORAL AND HORRIBLE JOKES AND ALMOST ANTAGONIZING THE FIVE BY BEING JERKS AND NOT EVEN CONSIDERING THEIR OWN MESSAGE.

    I just want to add my two bits to the pot in regards to the girls' supposed bragging. Did anyone ever think they were just giving Dash a taste of her own medicine. I have to agree that the scene at sugar cube corner featured Rainbow while she was still in full ego mode. At that point, I believe that the girls were so overtly bragging because they wanted RD to feel what it is like to be on the receiving end of all that boasting. When you are dealing with someone whose head that far in the clouds, (figuratively and literally in Dash's case) sometimes a taste of their own medicine is just the wake up call they need to bring them back down to earth.

    • @RedfurredPikachu
      @RedfurredPikachu 9 лет назад

      +chaosblur Um the fact that they did'nt at least try to talk to her before resorting to this plan is exactly what people hate. They are supposed to be good friends and as such should try to talk things out before resorting to tricking them. There are much better episodes that handled that better than Merriweather handled it here. I for one wouldn't try to purposely crush my friends spirits just to prove a point that's for damn sure.

    So, I sorta liked this episode prior to watching it. I was one bit into the positive territory. However, VOR made one new point to me that I really REALLY can't deny. The episode does go completely against the moral of Party of One. Bravo VOR. Now, it's a guilty pleasure. :(

    • @ThePastAnalysis
      @ThePastAnalysis 9 лет назад

      ***** That's not actually what I was referring to. What Voice extrapolated from that episode isn't what I extrapolated. However, the episode he used was evidence in of itself. In it, Twilight mentioned the moral about always expecting the best of her friends. Well, her and the rest of the Mane6, minus RD, likely thought RD wouldn't learn the moral without them one up-ing her.
      Prior to being shown Party of One, I thought it was fine for them to be indirect, expecting RD not to get the message if it was direct. However, Twilight's actions don't make sense now according to that defense. It would mean Twilight expected the direct approach to fail on RD and thus jumped straight to the indirect, arguably rude, approach. The reasons you gave for that rudeness don't seem like good reasons to me. The reason of "we did this because we thought it was the best approach" contradicts the moral of Party of One, because they were expecting the worst of RD, thinking the direct approach would fail on her.

    • @ThePastAnalysis
      @ThePastAnalysis 9 лет назад

      ***** My argument has nothing to do with pragmatism. I'm solely addressing morality here. If Twilight made a moral statement about always expecting the best of her friends, then she should continue to expect the best for RD. She didn't expect the best of RD, if her justification for this indirect/somewhat rude approach was that the direct approach would not work on RD. If someone thinks "I shouldn't tell them the truth, they just won't get it," then said person is not expecting the best. They are expecting a worse outcome. Prior to this video, I thought this thought pattern for Twilight justified her actions in the episode. However, now I see that this thought pattern is inconsistent with her past episodes. (as Voice pointed out)
      Ironically, in the course of my rebuttal, I came up with a decent counter argument to mine. (I was playing devil's advocate) Twilight could be following a moral system that I hold. It's one that I sometimes call "inconsistently consistent morality." This might be something many people do, but I've just given a name to it. Basically, its the framework where someone has tons of different values which they hold, but aren't actually connected to any one system. The person's many values "fight" over what the person in question should do. In this moral system, the values can lose and gain strength, "die," and new values can be "born." To the outsider, the person's actions seem inconsistent. To the outside world, that's exactly what that person is being. However, if you look inside the person, you find this moral system of values is technically consistent. If you look at the values over time, you find that certain values have specific win/lose percentages. Certain values chances of winning a "fight" may be higher. Still, any value could lose, because every value has a lose percentage, as they have a win percentage.
      I'd be willing to buy that Twilight might hold this moral system, seeing as I believe her personality type is the same as mine in a certain personality system (I'm not mentioning which one that is here). In said personality system, this morality system of mine is strongly linked to my personality type. The link may be so strong that every person of this personality type has the morality system. Whether everyone of this type has it is just speculation on my part though.
      With that said, from my reasoning alone, Voice's criticism towards Mysterious Mare Do Well does not count. However, don't take this to mean that all inconsistency is justified. I've only reasoned this for TWILIGHT. The only other pony I'll possibly use this moral system for is Fluttershy, because her type's core mental function is the same as Twilight's. Still, I have to look up information on that type before I make that judgement. Make no mistake though. I'm NOT saying any character can now be inconsistent. It's just for TWILIGHT.

      ***** They should still at least try to talk to her. Rainbow may surprise them and listen. SHould she be ready to use MDW before talking? Yes but MDW is a last resort tatic NOT FIRST. Sorry MDW is a last resort move. THink of it. Dash is the Element of Loyalty. What the girls did was betray her with that stunt. I think of it as more of a "taste of your own medicine" type of vibe now that I've researched it. All that bragging was probably the only way they could have gotten to Rainbow. I doubt saying "You're being such a bragger, you need to stop because it's annoying" would have gotten through Rainbow's ego shield. Back in season 2, Rainbow wasn't humbled (until the end of this episode I might add) so it fits in her character that she would be deafened and blinded by her own ego to where the Mane 5 had to take "extreme" measures.
      And as for the Party of One moral, Im sure they considered that until they saw the photographs and autographs. Being the center of attention was a big deal for Rainbow back then, and at the end of the day, this episode set up Rainbow's real character development later on in the series, especially Wonderbolts Academy.

      Rainbow is the Element of Loyalty. SO the thing she dislikes the most is disloylaty. Heck not even Discord could cause her to be dis loyal. No he forced her to choose between loyalties. WHile done for good reasons the truth is that the mane 5 back stabbed Rainbow. That is not cool. Trust me if my friuends pulled this on me. They wouldn't be my friends anymore.

    Has anyone but me ever noticed the disconnect?
    Yeah, at the end Applejack says, "a real hero doesn't brag," which is pretty much what the Mane 5 were doing at Sugar Cube Corner. The thing is, at that point in the episode Rainbow Dash doesn't know they're The Mysterious Mare Do-Well. With the whole town talking about the masked hero, wouldn't it seem suspicious if they were the only ones NOT talking about her? Kinda makes the dialogue forced and clunky when you're trying to talk about your exploits without making them sound like YOUR exploits. (I won't say the scene couldn't have been handled better, only that the clunky dialogue is more understandable in this circumstance.)
    Also, The Mysterious Mare Do-Well never speaks, therefore, the Mysterious Mare Do-Well never brags. Back at Sugar Cube Corner all Dash knows is her friends are taking a keen interest in this brand new hero. If there's a point to be proven, it's that the Mysterious Mare Do-Well was capable of garnering the admiration of the entire town without once uttering a single word in self promotion.
    If there's one thing that could have been greatly improved, it would be if the Sugar Cube Corner scene had the Mane 5 reading the newspapers and commenting on the articles about The Mysterious Mare Do-Well. In this way they could have just been reiterating what someone else had said. It might have also helped if Rarity wasn't so keen on praising Mare Do-Well's costume (if I had my suspicions before, that was straw that confirmed them). It could also have removed (or at least reduced) the dickish retrospect that they were pretty much bragging behind her back at Sugar Cube Corner earlier. (There seems to be a running theme here; I think I have a problem with the Sugar Cube Corner scene.)

    I still wonder why the rest of the Mane 6 did not even consider talking to Rainbow Dash about her inflating ego? One way in which this episode could have been better was have a scene in which Twilight and the others tried to talk to Rainbow Dash In an effort to stop her ego from getting bigger, but by that point it got so bad that talking wouldn't have helped. So at that point the Mane 5 go through their Mysterious Mare Do Well scheme in order to deflate Rainbow's ego. Any other changes that I would have liked to see were addressed in this review.

    • @XIIIHearts

      ***** They didn't even THINK about it. They immediately went to the Mare Do Well stunt, and didn't even consider talking to Rainbow Dash.

    • @XIIIHearts
      @XIIIHearts 9 лет назад

      ***** She probably wouldn't, but not talking to her creates some very unfortunate implications. The Mare-Do-Well stunt should only be done as a last resort, not the first thing you think of, and because of what they did, the episode is basically saying that when Rainbow Dash is showing off and bragging, she is in the wrong but when her FRIENDS turn on her back and do the exact same thing, they are in the right. In other words, it's alright to be a hypocrite when one of your friend's actions annoy you.

      +XIII Hearts Not really. In fact, you seem to have the unhealthy impression that people/ponies can learn a lesson after encountering it ONCE. The mind does NOT work that way. As a Psych. Major, I'd like to point out the cliched phrase that I'm sure you've heard before: "Lessons take re-enforcement". I find it a bit ridiculous that some people complain about repeated/similar lessons; it only shows that the writers have enough understanding of the mind to do so. I know for a FACT that people might act contrary to something they should already know, because it slipped their mind. It's how I feel about people who complain about Fluttershy's "inconsistencies" in her continuity. What people seem to miss out on, is that Fluttershy seems to suffer from a dibilitating mental disorder. A few lessons, brought up only a few times, are NOT going to "fix" anything; repeated, consistant exploration and re-enforcement are the only things that will help her through it, to the point where she shows improvement. I honestly believe that they can help her through it, where her slip ups will be more sparse, as long as they keep up what they're doing. If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading it through before you respond; I can see why you'd think what you do, but I think this episode shows that the Mane Six know Dash well enough to do what they did.

    • @XIIIHearts
      @XIIIHearts 9 лет назад

      Marion Ette
      First, I'm sorry that I came across as thinking people/ponies can learn a lesson after hearing it once. I know from personal experience that this is not the case. However it seems that the writers in some cases forgot what went wrong in Boast Busters. In that episode it was a misstep to say that Trixie shouldn't flaunt her abilities as a magician showpony, even though that's what magicians usually to to draw attention. And in Mare-Do-Well Rainbow Das is told not to brag about her accomplishments by Applejack, who brags about her apples being the best and Rarity, who brags about her dressmaking abilities(the others don't really do this. Maybe Pinkie Pie on a few occasions with her parties). So we can add some hypocrisy to this episode. Also something handled wrong were how the townsponies behaved. In Boast Busters they wrongly accused Trixie for the Ursa Minor attack when it was Snips and Snails who brought the Ursa to town, and in Mare Do Well they didn't question one bit how there could be another alicorn since they saw Mare Do Well perform magic to fix the dam and fly away. So we can ad forced stupidity for the plot. As for the actual Mare Do Well stunt, it could be that the rest of the Mane 6 knew Rainbow Dash well enough, but to me a stunt like that is usually reserved for when trying to talk to him/her fails, and since we never see them try to talk to Rainbow Dash about her bragging, we'll never know if the talking route would have worked. There were some good things in this episode, like the scene with Rainbow Dash on the cloud after she realizes she's all alone, and I did laugh a few times during the episode, but overall the episode didn't feel well handled enough for me to consider it good. I don't think it's the worst episode(to me that's Spike at Your Service), but I'm not going to defend it as a good episode.
      For Fluttershy, I think it's more of repeating common grounds so often that it becomes tiring. Lesson through re-enforcement I get, but if all of her episodes focused on her overcoming some form of social anxiety, it starts to feel less of "lesson through re-enforcement" and more "going the easy way of making a Fluttershy episode." It would be even more of a disservice to Fluttershy's character if they went back to that formula again in season 5 because she's finally starting to grow as a character. Tanks for the Memories had her being the one to help Rainbow overcome her depression of Tank going into hibernation, and Make New Friends but Keep Discord showed that she actually went out on her own to make a new friend during the Breezie trip, something that would have seemed impossible during season 1, and her telling Discord off when he threatened to send Tree Hugger to another dimension. There seems to be potential for an episode where she meets another pony who acts just like she did back in season one, and she could use her own experiences to help out that pony. If all of her development went out the window when she gets her next episode, the reaction will most likely be one of "Okay just a standard Fluttershy episode."

      @marionette8739 9 лет назад

      While I DO see, and agrre with, most of your points, I'm going to reinterate, Fluttershy is and was crippled. Her mental disability is terrible, and she's working through it MARVELOUSLY! I can say that I'm proud of her development, so far, and look forward to her next episode, with high hopes, but low expectations. I keep myself away from disappointment with that method. While I can see that they could go the route you mentioned for the next Fluttershy episode, I can also see them having her regress a bit. Hopefully, we don't see any regression soon. In regards to your mention of Boast Busters, I see the same things you do, and find myself disappointed with how they handled Trixie... I REALLY like her character, and hope they do more with her, now that she's... "Reformed"... In regards to Applejack, the Apple family seem to be the ONLY family that does apples, making it an accurate statement. If you're the only one who grows apples, it stands to reason that you have the best apples; they are the ONLY apples! In regards to Rarity, she owns a business. She HAS to advertise her business in such a way that consumers want HER product over others. In addition, with the exception of a few pieces, she makes some of the best dresses. It doesn't endanger lives, so it's not hypocritical. The whole reason they did it, was because Rainbow Dash was endangering others to bolster her ego. The part about alicorn presumptions are a fair point. At least, with today's knowledge. I think she might've figured that Mare Do Well was more than one mare, as the only two alicorns were Princesses, and were both too large to be her. We hadn't met Cadence yet, so we didn't yet have a precident for more even POSSIBLY existing beyond the two sisters! Let alone that you could EARN being an alicorn! I agree that the townsfolk ARE poorly handled, with a lack of group memory. However, that's consistant throughout the SHOW, even to season four! Yet, I don't see any points involving Flim & Flam episodes... I'm not even going to TRY to defend Spike At Your Service to you, partially because this reply is ALREADY super long...

    I definitely agree with the hypocrisy in this episode. What hurts is that it was so easily avoided! How, you ask? When they were praising themselves as Mare Do Well, they should have praised each other! It still would have felt malicious, but at least they wouldn't have been as egotistical about it.

    • @EditDeath
      @EditDeath 9 лет назад

      ***** While I agree that it's not THAT bad, that is a scene I take exception to. What I think was the point of the scene was to teach Dash that it's no fun for others when you're a braggart. The problem there is that Dash doesn't KNOW that they're being braggarts at the time. Instead, we get the lesson, but in a way where they're acting in a decidedly negative manner. At least in the way I suggested they could have gotten their point across without falling into the same trap that Dash did.
      Also, punctuation is your friend.

    • @BioniclesaurKing4t2
      @BioniclesaurKing4t2 9 лет назад

      In terms of realistic character interests, it would have raised a few red flags if they'd praised the things they should otherwise have had no interest in. Even Dash would've noticed if, say, AJ had commented out of the blue on liking the costume, or Fluttershy on the display of magic. It would have put the whole charade at risk of falling apart, and the ReMane 5 would surely have realized that before implementing the plan.
      And falling into the same trap as Dash? They were using her own attitude right back at her. Intentionally. As a tool. They were doing that to convey a point. The comments were intended as nothing more than a means to an end, not them actually "believing their own publicity" as Dash had been. That's what I see as the justifying fundamental difference between her bragging and their "bragging", note the quote marks. They were doing nothing more than imitating, and they knew it, while Dash was getting caught up in the moment, and she couldn't see it from the inside.
