It's not that the sun is closer or farther away the sun doesn't move you still have the actual science wrong. The earth is constantly tilted 23 degrees. As is revolves around the sun the apparent position of the sun in the sky changes from north to south as the year progresses and the earth orbits the sun through the year since the earth's tilt remains the same. Again, the sun doesn't get closer. In fact, as the earth orbits the sun it's slightly elliptical orbit in fact the earth is CLOSER to the sun slightly when it's WINTER in the northern hemisphere. That orbit also changes over time but I won't get into that I just wanted to give some better information. Its when which ever hemisphere is tilted towards or away from the sun during its yearly orbit is what gives you the seasons because of the increase/descrease of solar radiation - again because of the earth's tilt - not because the is closer or farther away from the sun itself. But seasonal lag is a thing. Vancouver usually not but this year had a Junuary. Happens every few years.
