One of the best lead singers of all time. Also, a great song. The music, harmonies, and arrangement, were top notch. Thank you Virgil.

One of my favorite songs since it came out. I try to sing that song whenever I can. My buddies and I used to sing on the street in the 60s and in the Army barracks in Germany with the great acoustics there.

Not only was "Tonight" one of the best doowop songs, and should have done better than it did. There were at least four more songs they made that should have done equally well.
It's one of the strange music business enigmas that happens time and again. The fact that it stands the test of time proves how good this song is, and how good the group themselves were.

Good story, but one issue.. "I" by The Velvets was hitting the airwaves in 1953. Their last recording session was in 1958 for Bobby Robinson's Fury record label. By the time Virgil Johnson's Velvets hit the scene, the NY group had been disbanded.

Back in those days they always started the songs with a lead in. For example I loved the sax before the Velvets sang a word. At the end the song had a great finish too. You weren't left hanging, the end was a completion!

Thank you Virgil Johnson. Your music has pleased me greatly, I am getting old now but when I was a teenie-bopper, 55 years ago, I first heard you and will never forget you. Thank you for setting the musical background to my already decorated life. Tonight just could be the night, I scored some Viagra...

Virgil is right up there with the best lead singers of that era including Tony Williams (The Platters) and Rudy West (The Five Keys). My favorite Velvets song is "Laugh".

That song is the result of a great arrangement by the writer. The end of the song builds to a crescendo accompanied by the great harmony...

Loved the Tonight song by The Velvets, found out I liked the flip side, Spring Fever about 50 years later, also their version of Lana as good as Orbison's.
