Hi Ken name is Gary I just got done watching a video on RUclips on how to adjust valves on a small block Chevy love the method. My question is my motor is already in the car. It’s been sitting all winter I have a little bit of Tampa going on I’d like to readjust the them with your method. Can I do the same thing but with the oil in the lifters already It’s a small block 350 and a 67 Chevelle
KEN !!!!!!! We need more of your videos please post more of your day to day short clips tips tricks trivia or funny things you like to post anything glad to see you’re doing well and in good health
Papa John's, Marco's pizza? Come up to New Haven, CT. sometime Ken. I'll treat you to Pepe's, Sally's or Modern APIZZA! Really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
I've been following since the modified 300 6 ford. Ken is a icon pay attention people guys like him will be gone one day. Believe me I know I've lost a few great guys over the last few years and along with that more engine knowledge lost forever. I'm in Wisconsin and if I were to ever have an engine built I'd drive it to Maryland to have ken build it. Ken thanks for what you do and for the knowledge you give us.
I have a question on one of your first videos about adjusting values on a engine, when you started to adjust (zero la.) where was the crank at, was it at top dead center or just anywhere before turning 1/4 turns. Thank you for your time.
Absolutely right about trade secerets it took you many years to learn those little nuances, only fool would give them away free, and there aint enough time in the day to explain ,not talking about gaping a spark plug
I live in upstate ny and the closest machine shop is over 100 miles away. There are 5 places advertised as engine builders but none of them can grind a crankshaft.
Your so right I see these guys all over RUclips Starting there videos with,Well we're going to build a engine today an talk like they have done it a1,000 times then halfway threw you realize or they slip up say this is my first time building a engine. and some guys that watch it never realize that it's the guy's first time.and people wonder why cams and lifters are getting wipe out.
I did what you do for 18 years, not too far from you. I'm a younger guy, loved what I did but it got to the point where I could see the writing on the wall that it would be hard for me to make good money so I got out of it. I'm sure we could share lots of notes on business in that tough industry. It wont be long before there is no one to do the work.
Been a Gunsmith for 27 years now and everyone calls us Old Smiths "Cranks" here is the truth. "Cranky Gunsmiths were made by their Customers it didn't just happen overnight. Doing stupid things with Firearms finally wears on a guy.
Im a Boat guy from the age of 10. 67 now I worked on friends Boats and would tell them what to parts to get and how to do it even Show them how some would do what i said most would Not and f it up Now when i hear Do you know about this I say sorry cant help you 😊
Hey Ken, I’ve enjoyed your videos for a good few years now. Sorry, I just watched this video. I’m pretty local, I live 20 miles west of Ocean City, MD. You’re right, there aren’t many machine shop/ custom racing engine builders in our area anymore. Sadly, we just lost a legend on this side of the bridge. I’ve used my friend, Steve Drummond (Drummond Race Cars) for my engine and chassis work for some time now. We lost him to the dreaded cancer on May 15th. His shop will no longer be machining or building engines. They will continue to do chassis work though. Steve and I had been putting together a (bad behind to me) 582bbc. My block was actually the last engine block that Steve ever started to machine. Shortblock was a kit ordered through PBM, with Merlin IV block (9.800), forged crank and rods (Scat) and JE 41cc domed, lateral port pistons. I used Eric Weingartner of Weingartner Racing for my top end. He hand ported a set of Brodix BB3 Xtra 345’s out to 375cc, cut them for 2.350 intake valves and upgraded them to Ferrea 6000 valves. The heads flowed 458cfm @ .850”. He also hand ported a Brodix BM2017 single plane intake for me and custom spec me a 278/294 @ .050 (310/329), .850/.825”, 110LSA ground straight up. We’ve got T&D shaft rockers (1.7), BAM steel DLC lifters, Moroso dual kickout fabricated alm pan, billet spur gear pump, custom spec IRD racing 4500 1375cfm carb, spec’d for C14 plus. Meziere billet flexplate, ATI dampener, Jesel belt drive, crank trigger, Star Machine vacuum pump kit… It will have 2 1/4 or 2 3/8 custom built headers. I’ve certainly spent a fair amount of money. The goal (between Steve, Eric and myself) all along was to build an engine that would make 1000+hp & 850tq. Peak hp coming in around 7000rpm, but carrying well through 7500-7600. At the same time, building it to be good for another 300ish of nitrous, if and when I saw fit. I’m now a bit stuck. The Drummond family plans to speak with Mark Benston, of Benston Racing Engines to inquire as to whether he’d be willing to take on their current engines waiting to be built. Anyway, this has been long winded and I’m sorry, you know how everyone loves talking about their engines. My question is, I know that the Scat crank & H-beam rods are likely the weakest link. Steve assured me, that the crank would be fine for what we are doing. However, I’ve heard quite a bit about using budget H-beam rods in 1000+hp engines. The rods we have were around $800ish and I do know they have the ARP 200k hardware. I’d be willing to sell the H-beams and fork out the money for a set of Oliver I-beams. Do you think I should? What are your thoughts? If you don’t mind sharing.
Any dude who looks like an aging 80's rocker must know his stuff.
Welcome back. Please post more videos, we appreciate learning from you.
You have to vent
Thank you Ken, you gave me diesel advice! I don’t have a machine shop here anymore and you gave me awesome advice!
