Is it possible for the solenoid valves to be faulty without producing vanos error codes? My 116i feels like it's misfiring when under higher acceleration and really lacks power when cold, feels like a long delay for it to start revving up. I've ruled out coils and plugs, I know it's not that. Car is at about 75k m / 120k km and has not had any vanos maintenance done before. I'm thinking of getting a couple of new solenoids and putting them in myself before I sell it.
Could P0015 error code be related to this issue by any chance? I have a weird “gravel in a tin can” noise coming from the engine around 1500-2000 rpms I searched around everywhere and couldn’t find it only possible things I saw were the vanos solenoid or the timing chain tensioner?
I have the same error code on F20, but the engine is B38. The code comes and goes by itself. There are no other problems, nothing like high consumption or even limp mode, the car runs fine with the light on as well. Can you please guide on where the solenoids are in B38? How can I change them? I also checked the camschaft position sensors, but I am not sure what voltage should they show, do you have any information on that?
What did you use to get the T30 bolt out on the exhaust side please? I'm struggling to find a combination of attachments to get in there and provide enough purchase to undo it. Might have to take the turbo off at this rate! Edit: thanks for the video by the way, was very helpful!
Just a 1/4 ratchet and extentions, we managed to get a combo on which is just few mm away from the turbo, undo the bolt and then once it starts goingremove it rest of the way by hand and only the t30 bit. That's if I remember corectly, it's been a while since then 😅
@@mattwillow7 thanks for the reply. I managed to snap a T30 insert going in at an awkward angle so I'm trying to bodge something better together. They really didn't design this to be easily removed 🤪
Did yours have codes 130204 and 130304? I keep getting this stupid limp mode, but it only happens when I change into sport modes but the car is completely fine
Not sure I had both, but did have 130308 and one more. Either way, if I'm not mistaking 130304 should be camshaft stuck, which usually is VANOS selenoid related.
Nope, it ran and drove great, just turned on the fault every now and then. Turn it off and on and it would be god for few houndred km untill it did the same again. Funny thing is I had this happen on 4 out of 4 N13 powered BMWs I had. Even funnier thing is that last two did it every day 1-2 km after first start, restart it and you could drive it trouble free that day no matter how many km or how many drives you did. Untill next day that is, than after 1-2 km it would come on again 🤣
hei did you solve the problem? my car make the same sound on cold.. at start and at 1500-2000 rpm.. only for 10 minutes after start.. then is perfectly normal
Hi bro, I have a 2014 BMW 114i. It has unstable engine speed and a little lack of power. I changed filters, oil, spark plugs, coils, injectors, and finally the 2 oxygen sensors. and just now I get error 130204. Do you think the problem of unstable engine speed and lack of power is due to VANOS? please help me a lot
Could be, but the question is why do you have VANOS fault, maybe it's just the selenoid like in my case, but since you have additional simptomes it could also mean that the timming is a bit of
Hello friend, I already solved my vibration problem, it was just an air vacuum.... but I still had several errors of the VANOS. I drive and I get "propulsion fault" and the turbo stops working then I turn it off and wait about 30 minutes and the problem goes away. every day 130004, 12048, 12AF08, 12A308 what do you recommmend me to do ? change the 2 openings? or only 1? the wiring? I would greatly appreciate an answer, thank you
Well I had 7 of these N13 cars ( ok, one was a Citroen THP ), only one car was trouble free engine wise. We had 5 with VANOS fault, 3 with high oil consumption, 2 blown cylinders, 1 headgasket/carbonisation, 2 timing chains, 1 oil pumo chain... Yeah, it's a good idea to have a spare engine if you want to daily drive them 😅
@@szymanskifit don't know, one was probably bad turbo, sold it after change so can't confirm, but even that was within BMW recomended consumption. Also depends on how hard you drive them, so I just live with it. As an example, I used a 116i as a daily last year, added 3 liters in 12k km, it's up for a service now and oil level is a bit under half mark on the stick, so not bad enough for me to justify opening the engine 😅
@@mattwillow7 hi Matt, thanks! I think i have Bad luck with mine.. 1l / 1000km. Cold Start rattling After timing chain / vanos 😬. I have Seen your oilpump change Video. Is it also possible to change only the oilpumpchain without Lifting the Engine and without removing the timing chain?
@szymanskifit which viscosity oil are you using? Even though that is very high oil consumption, never had more than 0.5l/1000km, so you probably need new rings or valve stem seals (less likely). As for the oil pump chain, you need to either drop the subframe or lift the engine, can't remove the sump otherwise, and you have to remove the chain because both sprockets are on the same hub held in by same bolt.
Once you get it sorted it's actually a very nice car, I would take it over any other car in it's class, it's just few dumb BMW/PSA things that bring it down.
This proved to be very helpful thanks for sharing, made my attempt at doing this easier than I’d built it up to be 👏👏

No, on this car it was fine
I’m about to change this solenoid due to rough idle when cold only. I test the pcv and works fine. Did you have problem on cold start idle with this ?

How did u reset the adaptation?
With ISTA+, tab service functions
Thank you
Hey :) can i clean this solenoid ? Brake cleaner or something ? I have a 130204 fault :/
You can try, I used brake cleaner, sometimes it helps, but not always.
@@mattwillow7 when i buy new :D thanks
What size is the engine is it 1.6 ?
Yup, 1.6, N13B16 to be exact
Hi was your car shaking with engine light on?
Nope, just got a random check engine light now and then, it would go off after turning the car off and back on
What do you mean by reset the adaptation
Hi what do you mean by reset adaptations ?
DME "learns" some parameters while you drive, you need to reset these for VANOS with diagnostic tool like ISTA so it can "relearn" these values
@@mattwillow7 you mean clear codes once new one fitted?
Have a spare engine 😂 I died!

Does it have to be reset on a BMW computer after fitted?
If you want to do it properly, yes, VANOS adaptations need to be reset
What happens if it’s not reset straight away ? Will it just show a light on the dash until it’s reset
@@AshleyJohnson-j2hno depends on which codes are active, but even if it does go off it will probably turn it on every now and then
