Depending on what quality parts you want the cost varies.I just did my 03' protege like this engine and it cost me over $400 for parts.I used a Gates Kit from NAPA and a new(not rebuilt) water pump. Also, ended up buying new plastic tming cover set made by Dorman for $80..from NAPA.Seems the palstic gets brittle around the bolt holes and breaks.Junk yard had acouple, but they were broke also. Not a terrible job, but time consuming for a first timer like me.
I watched your video and it was a help on my protege, but you should of explained htat you need a tool that holdds the cam sprockets in place.I struggled keeping it in time since there was nothing holding the cams in place and they wanted to go over TDC when putting the belt on.Can't believe you guys did this job without a tool or wedge to hold the cams. It's not as weasy as it looks.
Wow this is a lot more work than shown in the video, easy for a mechanic with proper tools. My 626 needs this but it's so expensive, I'm just going to drive it till it snaps. Doesn't make sense to spend 50% car's value on maintenance or repairs. Looks like too much for me unless I had a friend who could help.
I just had a strange situation on this exact car, no start. Found out timing was out. Thought it needed a new belt. Belt and internals were fine, it just jumped out of time (???). Timed it and it's running. I seen people asking about the belt tension. It appears that is taken care of automatically by the spring and tensioner. In other words, there is no adjustment. Just make sure the tensioner is not seized in one position and is free to pivot. And you only need to remove the mount if you are replacing the belt. The job I did I did not have to remove the mount.
Rember a belt has only got so many teeth so just mark the tooth and where it fits on each pulley, if it has not jumped time. and you can refit the new belt and every thing will be correct its a quick way to change a belt
i did a 97 mazda protege is almost same way u did but the crankshaft line up to the point andcam shaft line up straigth each other but that one i did was the left cam the letter "I" straight up and the letter E facin 8 oclock and the right side E facin up and I facin 5 oclock but the line on that u said to straight line each other but the protege is lil off but got it start it that way and runs good but i really dont understand why the 97 protege cant be line up like this video..
I just made the stupid mistake of trying to adjust the valves in time and then end up just taking off the belt while the engine was out of time. Can I put the new belt on and then line up the marks or am I hosed?? Any help would be appreciated.
Do you have any video's on how to take off the EGR valve and clean it, I took something off that was connected to the throttle body and cleaned it the other day but I'm still getting a PO400 code. I can't afford another valve.
i have a mazda mx6 but there is a beeping sound that keeps coming on every now and then but i cant figure out what it is please reply if any body knows wat it is there are no indication lights that comes on to show me so pls amy at wise thx
why does all the videos about changing timing belt, skip right over how to properly tension the belt? that is one of the most crucial part of the whole change out

You can see and hear the belt jumping on the exhaust cam when it is being turned. No tensioner on it..
