Animalize Live and Uncensored was the first VHS commercial video tape I bought. I ordered it locally from a chain-record store in a mall not faraway from my home in late '84. I lived in central Ontario Canada at the time and of course there was no internet, no Amazon, and Fed Ex was not a big thing yet. It took 7 weeks to get that tape into the store. Once I had it I played it many, many times into late '87 when I finally saw KISS (again) on their Crazy Nights tour in Toronto.
The entire show went out “live on da radio” pre-overdubs. Paul replaced quite a lot of vocals for the VHS release. And someone overdubbed a bunch of harmonics at the end of ISLY which no one plays on the VHS since Bruce and Paul both have their hands up in the air!
I was there!! Upper Bowl at Historic Cobo Arena in Detroit Rock City!! My second time seeing KISS. I LOVED every minute of it. Thanks for the memories, Bruce. I can't believe that it's been 40 years. It seems like only yesterday that I was 17 years old, with my buddy Danny and my cousin, Vito. You'll always be MY KISS lead guitarist.
This was my very fist concert. I was just 8 years old and that night remains one of my greatest memories. I have gone on to see KISS 12 more times over the years.
Hey Kiss!!! Or whoever bought the rights to Kiss.. pophouse.. Are you watching this?? This NEEDS to be put out as is, as the next OFF THE SOUNDBOARD release!! Contact Bruce and get the tape
As a rock fan in my home city in northern Mexico it was really hard to get rock music and video tapes. There was just one local store that sold all things rock: T-shirts, accessories, and PIRATED TAPES. We bought a copy of Kiss Animalize Live and I can't tell you how many times me and my brothers rocked to it in the 90s (that's when you could start finding more rock items, in the 80s it was extremely hard, mostly we copied tapes from friends who traveled to El Paso and bought a bunch of cassettes). I still own this VHS tape, and it's one of my most precious treasures of that time.
I had been a KISS fan since '78. Love Ace and all that followed. But, funny enough, by 1982, I'd fallen out of love with them ( a little band out of Pasadena took over my main musical pursuits. . . ). But I remember renting this video then in 1984 and was blown away. After this show, I ran out and bought the corresponding " Animalize " album ( I still have that cassette!! ). This show proved that KISS had A LOT to still say musically. To this day, " Animalize " remains my all time favorite KISS album ( Let's face it: Paul is a CRIMANLLY UNDERATED rhythm guitarist ). Mark St. John was superb but I had no idea ( until later ) that Bruce had contributed to the album too. A great show, a great tour and a wonderful post reminding me of being a teen with dreams of being a professional musician. Thanks for the great post, Bruce!
Bruce you were the best guitar player Kiss ever had! I’ve been following them since 74. I loved this Show!!! Saw it live a few times. Saginaw and Lansing Mi! Man I miss Cobo!!
Bruce i saw you guys at Market Square arena in Indianapolis i was 12 year old. Snuck in the front row in front of you. I tried to grab a pick off your guitar. You pointed to bear patrol and they kicked me out lol. So i walked to the other side and snuck in on Gene's side and watched the rest of the show. Got 3 picks,, a night i'll never forget Thanks man !!!
I was 12 when this came out- had gotten into hard rock/heavy metal a year or 2 before. This had a HUGE impact on me. KISS without make up became my favorite current band at the time, and to have that huge back catalogue to discover was just unbelievable. Me & my 2 best buds going down this rabbit hole. Best memories ever
Bruce, I was at the show in Greenville SC earlier that year. As a 12 year old kid I was so impressed that you knew all the parts. I think Greenville was one of your first shows. If you are struggling to remember that show, Krokus opened & there were people shooting bottle rockets in the arena. A rigger went up above ceiling tiles to investigate smoke from one of these bottle rockets. From what I understand he got into some electricity & he did at least a 40' free fall right in front of me on Stage left. Paul had to come out & explain to the fans that we had to clear the building before the officials would allow the show to go on. When they opened the doors to come back in it was the biggest rush to stage & seats ever. The friend I was with was about 6'4" & so I grabbed his belt loops & he literally ran with me flying behind him without my feet touching the floor...lol It was one of my favorite shows ever & have owned that Animalize Live VHS since the day it came out.
Just wanted to say a sincere thank you for your contributions to KISS, my favorite band as a wild-eyed and way too over-sexed teenager. You were welcome stability and professionalism after Frehley, Vincent, and St. John. KISS wouldn't have survived without you, and with that, I wouldn't have had some of the crazy nights that I did. 80s were wild, man. Deliciously decadent. Special time never to be repeated or equaled.
I think it's so cool that your career in Kiss was bookmarked by two amazing live performances, both filmed by MTV. You were a major part of what brought so many of us back into the Kiss fandom. Be very proud Bruce! ☺️
Bought the PAL VHS release, just watched the concert again recently on the anniversary of the gig that I saw in Copenhagen October 21 (day before my birthday), it was great. There were two entrance doors to the hall our ticket guy kindly opened our door first so we rushed to the front placing myself dead center first row, almost could've reached out and touched Paul it was close. Bon Jovi opened, they were alright but I didn't think they'd become big. 😊I recall the sound was loud and fine ("Love Gun" always sounds great no matter what), think the '83 Lick it Up show I saw in Aarhus was messy loud and not as good. Anyway, I recall that part the audience didn't know it wasn't Mark but actually Bruce, they were shouting 'welcome Mark'. 😏
Bruce knew that this was the first KISS concert I saw in 2005! I was only 14 years old, I knew little about the band, but after watching it, I became a big fan of the band, getting to know and like the band in depth. Eric Carr was amazing at this concert, especially in Black Diamond. I watched this show over and over again.
I got this one when it was coming out, it was my first KISS concert movie i got, and it was so good, in mine opinion, you guys, and of course when Eric Singer was taking over, after the tragic death of our dear Eric Carr, you five, was the best that happening to KISS, after the seventies, you just ruled. I'm so glad that I was getting to know KISS, it's the best group ever 🤟👍
I was five years old in 84, so I missed out! I got into hard rock in summer 89. My older friend who’s a big KISS fan lend me his copy of Animalize. My twin brother and I would watch that video over and over! At the time, I never got into the 70s makeup albums. I was a big fan of the 80s albums heavy sound. I wish I got to see the Kulick, Carr,Singer era. The band was fast, heavy and loud. I got to see KISS in 98 at Dodger Stadium and 2000 at Irvine Meddows. The shows didn’t have the same excitement for me as when I was watching the Animalize live video or listening to KISS Alive III.
Thank you Bruce again some of us Kiss fans love this Era of Kiss, and mostly the hard work that you and the great Eric Carr brought to this version of this band we love you and rip FOX, Eric Carr
RIP Eric Carr absolute legend. Bruce, stepping into the awesomeness. Appreciate you sharing this video. Must have my daily KISS fix. Paul Stanley Legend. Gene Simmons Legend. #Celebrate_the_legends_of_RockandRoll_KISS
This is it. The moment it all started for me. I was about 4 or 5, my older brother came home with the bootleg VHS (sorry!) of this telling me that "you gotta check out the drummer in this band!", I asked him which one of the four was the drummer and he replied "the one in the middle." I still have no idea what he meant because there were 4 people on the cover! But this is the moment I became a KISS fan. Unlike the vast majority of the fanbase, I started by the unmasked days. Funny thing is that I wasn't even alive back when it was released. Hell, my parents hadn't even met each other, and still this show is VERY special to me and I've watched enough times to memorize each and every one of Paul's banters. You''ve helped change my world, and for that I will forever be grateful! Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year, everybody!
wow 40 years ago, crazy!! we bootlegged it off MTV onto a blank VHS (yes, they existed) from about "I Love It Loud" on and man alive, when we eventually got the official LIVE UNCENSORED VHS, it seemed like it was on the TV in the living room 24-7 ...at least when us kids were home, we were watching the new guy, Bruce Kulick, get KISS in ship shape!!
I hope that this will see an official release on DVD/BluRay in my remaining lifetime! I have seen one concert of this tour in Germany (after being a fan of the band for six years already) and I was very happy when this VHS was released in '84 - I still have it and watch it from time to time! Great concert, great video!
Love this video as this tour was the first time I had seen KISS live in person. Would've loved to have seen the band make this show Alive! 3. No knock on Eric Singer but it would have been great to get a live KISS album/cd with Eric Carr on it. Great concert Bruce!!! Love that ESP as well...
I have watched this show for so many times comparing the Carr's drumming style and speed with Singer's on Alive III. It was the first time that I saw the Black Diamond alternate ending. I just love this show ❤
I was there! Came from Cadillac MI. On the radio they announced they were filming a video for Thrills, but we didn't know it was a full MTV show until Paul announced it onstage! Thrills indeed! Also, the same night of the Vince Neil/Razzle accident
Mr. Bruce I was present at Memphis mid South coliseum my first of three times to see you in kiss being January 85. Thanks for good music, good times, praise God thank You Jesus, and good memories.you are always first class.
I remember seeing this when it premeired on MTV. The last time I seen Kiss live was the Dynasty tour. (I had a death in the family and I missed Creatures tour....) So I was so excited to see them. I watched it with my best friend and we both said the same thing. Who in the hell is this new guitar player????? LOL LOL....We both loved you that night. Such great memories!
I still remember being downstairs when my VHS showed up from overseas. Man this was great. Truly better than anything else they released as live. Ive Had Enough such a great vocal display. Young and Wasted. Etc.
First KISS album I bought was Animalize... back then as a kid it was tough to get more media for your favourite bands, so we used to swap VHS tapes of various stuff. I ended up with a KISS one with a bunch of stuff from the 80 Aussie tour, and this. I wore that tape out. I was so young, I even remember being blown away by Gene's solo :D The highlight for me was the extended Black Diamond, pure class. Looking back at it now, it's really apparent how much carrying Bruce and Eric were doing in this era. That being said, the most distinct memory I have of around this time is Eric's Crazy Nights at the Budokan solo, and Bruce's solo from the same show. So I guess it was pretty obvious to me even back then. I also have a memory of a guy trying to convince me (he had a tape of Asylum) that "Bruce Kulick" was really Ace without the makeup, and with his real name :D
This sounds SO MUCH BETTER! I never liked the sound of the original concert. The guitars sounded so "plucky," and there was no distortion at all. This sounds more raw and gritty.
This was my first experience of Kiss live when I got the VHS in late ‘85! 11 year old me was blown away and there were many times I could be found up on the table in the tv room playing air guitar to this tape! 😊🤘
By far, my favorite era of KISS! And Bruce, you are easily my favorite guitarist that the band ever had! I love the other guys, but you always impressed me the most! Much love!!!
A truly iconic release. Hired it from a local video store and just fell in love with it. When I had the money I bought a copy. I’ve still got it on VHS and sadly never had an official DVD release. Thanks for sharing your recording, it’s very unusual to hear a different mix of something I’ve watched/listened to hundreds of times offer the last 40 years.
back in 1985 in Buenos Aires was a small underground place call VINICIUS and was a long very long queue to see this video....was also creatures song included in that concert.
We NEED a full re-release with the board audio! Thank you so much for this, Bruce My quick story on this video. It came out when I was around 9 years old and back in the days of renting movies (lol), my parents let me rent this so many times from my local video store, that the owner finally sold it to me at a discounted price. He told me that i was the only person who rented it for almost a year, so he guessed it would be in good hands.
Saw Kiss on the Animalize tour a few weeks before this concert in Bethlehem PA at the Stabler Arena. Thanks for being there Bruce. It was a great concert.
Bruce being in Kiss was one of the best things for that band!
Ong, best musician in Kiss besides Eric Carr!

This is my favorite KISS lineup…. Eric C, Bruce and those two other guys. 😊
I love how Bruce is keeping up Eric's tradition of celebrating KISS with the fans.
Man Eric Carr was a PHENOMENAL drummer!!!!! R.I.P.
The BEST Kiss concert !!! Eric Carr just kills !! RIP Eric
Creatures of the night going at lightspeed, good lord :-)
Bruce, with your talent, calm and patience, you saved Kiss from a very sad end in the early 1980s. You were the right guy at the right time!!!!!!!!
Bruce saved Kiss, Vinnie did, Eric did, propably Tommy did aswell…..to some people. Just remember who were the captains and who were the crew!
I loved this concert - Eric's drums sounded like battle ship cannons! I can't believe its been 40 years!
Crazy right!?!?!
Bruce, thanks to you and Eric. I honestly believe you saved KISS. You are a class act and one hell of a guitarist.
Thrills in the night always reminded me of Nowhere To Run
Yes! I’ve been saying this for years!
THIS is my Kiss!!!!! Bruce, I cant thank you enough!!!! Someday I hope to personally thank you and hug you!
As usual , Gene’s bass playing is DEAD ON 🔥
found a nice Japanese DVD bootleg of this some years ago. Amazing quality. What a shame P&G didn’t include this in the Kissology DVDs
There was not enough money in it apparently, because that is all they cared about. Ever.

Remember, as a kid, when I got the Videotape. Amazing performance and I loved Bruce’s Style. A pity, Creatures wasn’t on there.
Bruce is always the gentleman and will always be my favourite Kiss guitarist.
I wore out my first vhs copy… I had to buy a second one.. still have it.. Eric’s solo was the best!!
Great show. I still have my VHS
By far, my favorite era of KISS! And Bruce, you are easily my favorite guitarist that the band ever had! I love the other guys, but you always impressed me the most! Much love!!!
Mark St John, Eric Carr Rest in Power.
Thanks! Bruce Thrills in the Night one of my favorites \m/
Saudades de ver o Eric Carr, melhor baterista do Kiss em ação
We NEED a full re-release with the board audio! Thank you so much for this, Bruce
My quick story on this video. It came out when I was around 9 years old and back in the days of renting movies (lol), my parents let me rent this so many times from my local video store, that the owner finally sold it to me at a discounted price. He told me that i was the only person who rented it for almost a year, so he guessed it would be in good hands.
40 years! Good Lord where has the time gone!? This is awesome, you guys were such a powerhouse!! Can't wait to hear more!
Saw Kiss on the Animalize tour a few weeks before this concert in Bethlehem PA at the Stabler Arena. Thanks for being there Bruce. It was a great concert.
Their best non makeup album imo. Greatest band of all time.
