If Nishki were more secure he couldve compartmentalized his emotions better. Its how Kiryu can be tough on his rivals and enemies in the yakuza world and treat folks who aren't a part of that as kindly as he does. A person like Nishki will find it very hard to do this which is why we see him as a cold, unforgiving, and vengeful person after he kills Matsuhige, and why we only see him "go back to himself" in a sense after everything is lost, and he makes the decision to sacrifice himself to finish Yumi's plan to destroy the 10Billion and saves Kiryu and Haruka in the process. Nishki was a broken man who was kind and good natured at heart. There would still be a chance that this happens even with Kiryu by his side but Kiryu in a way kept Nishki grounded to himself.

Nishikiyama is my favorite character in the series. His story was compelling to begin with, back in the original Yakuza game, but the additional material added in Kiwami and of course Yakuza 0 really added weight to the tragedy of his spiral. It’s difficult to tell which was the bigger stressor: his sister’s condition, the comparison with his best friend and chosen brother Kiryu, or the sheer weight of everything he did and had done to him as a yakuza, particularly the truth about what happened to Dojima and Yumi’s trauma (not to mention, breaking the promise he made to Kiryu about killing in Y0). It was just too much weight for him, and to be honest I don’t think he was ever truly cut out to be a yakuza in the first place. You can see in Y0 that he shares some of the same key values Kiryu does, but whereas our favorite Dragon can shoulder the weight of his deeds and everyone around him, Nishikiyama doesn’t have that same inner fortitude. Killing Dojima was the first domino to fall-after that, the path led inexorably to his final confrontation with his former brother, and the loss of everything he held dear. The carp would never find the right stream to become a dragon, no matter how hard he swam, for there was too much weighing down his fins.

In 0 everyone tried to take advantage of him as well like Dojima wanted him to bring them Kiryu’s head for all the trouble he caused lol. He couldn’t bear all that, and I was thinking he would crack at some point. I even thought he was gonna crack right there and fight his own brother when the Dojima officers brought Nishiki with them to fight Kiryu.

I believe the tattoos in their back hold a big meaning behind the tragedy, a koi is supposed to struggle to become a dragon, kiryu was about to get a position of power due to him already being a dragon, but when he covered for nishiki he "robbed" him of that struggle and put him in a position of power he wasnt ready to take, if things would have gone as they intended the kazuma family would have accepted a nishiki ready to face the struggles of being a Yakuza

It's sad to think that rather helping nishiki, what kiryu did for him led him to a darker and lonelier path. If nishiki was the one spending time in jail, he probably would've come out a better man and got out of the yakuza game.

I just finished this game tonight, and I feel like it had so many distinct themes surrounding nishiki. He is the jumping koi, aiming to become a dragon, but never quite reaching there, and this is that inferiority, but it is also ambition. He always needs to be more, aim higher, beat kiryu, get to the top of the tojo, but most importantly, he never takes responsibility for all the things he does, and in this world, responsibility and truth and respect all go together. I feel like of the 78 substories, at least half of them are people trying to lie and scam and cheat kiryu, but it does paint the idea that these are all talking about how importance of truth is to this story. I think this ties to nishiki because of all the moments of crisis, the one I think that destroys nishiki, or puts him on this path to destruction isn't his sister dying, it isn't the doctor telling him to get money, its not him having to grovel to his subordinate...
Its dojima. He murders dojima, but in a story about truth and scams and strenght of character, he murders somebody and when it is his time to take responsibility for it, he is robbed of it. This is Kiryu's sin. Sure, it is a measure of his friendship to take the blow, but it changes Nishiki's path, and in a story about showing your worth through taking responsibility, he is robbed of his chance to grow from it, and its why Kiryu gets so much respect out of prison, and Nishiki is a mess.
From that moment on, Nishiki is raised up, almost like he is being given what Kiryu would have gotten, but he didn't do what kiryu did, its not his. When he gets power, it isn't based on respect, its nepotism, and because of this, his own men won't follow him, its a joke, he doesn't gain respect. Nishiki is ambitious though, he will crave power even if he doesn't deserve it, and he often takes no responsibility, even for his sisters money, he begs his subordinate for help. Kiryu even has a moment of questioning if him going to jail in Nishiki's place was really the best thing for him. Sometimes justice plays an important role.
At the end of the game, Nishiki fights Kiryu, knowing everyone had been using him, and he loses fair and square, and it is when Jingu comes in and threatens Kiryu and Yumi, just like that day with Patriarch Dojima, that Nishiki has his second chance. He kills again, but this time, he will pay the price, the ultimate price, and it saves him. He gets the moment to be a real yakuza, to own every bit of respect that he craved, and the koi becomes a dragon. I like to think that the song of amazing grace at the end is for Nishiki, who rights his wrong in the end and takes responsibility for things. Even in the end he says "you have to let me do this."

The mini game a pretty fine, not too special or interesting either.(But the karaoke a full of bangers tho) Average Yakuza mini game. But just like most critics said, the game controll and camera is pretty bad, plus the FPS is always lock in 30 and you keep shooting zombies until they all die, really repetitive to some people but I think it is fine. With those issues, it made the game overall pretty unfun on the gameplay. But having amazing story. Is it a hidden gems? Not really compare to kurohyou or Kenzan. im sorry, i want to point out that there are `factors` that kept push Nishiki over the edge untill he snaps
    - Kazama, the all good mighty in Tojo clan, `claims` to be the super best while he ignored many red alerts about Dojima (and especially Nishiki - Kiryu)
    - all of Kazama families, instead of helping, they tend to want to rise to the top (cant blame them) but when Nishiki do it, they blame `its not the right way`
    - contrary to everyone opinion, i think since `his transformation` i believe it raise his cunning level to the max, to destroy Tojo family like that, you need meticulous plan to execute it, and still, his `crime` brings down Tojo harder than anyone else in RGG game (me think)
i believe Nishiki still cares for Kiryu (evidently blowing himself instead of Kiryu)

    • @UncannyAura

Also the fact that he saved Yumi from Dojima, but she became truamatized from seeing Nishiki defending himself by killing Dojima.
Then like the stupid bitch like she is, she left the hospital and went missing. In the process, got knocked up by the antagonist and lived on thinking Nishiki is a bad guy.
Honestly, I don't know why everyone blamed Nishiki for Yumi going missing when it was really the hospital's fault for their lack of security.

The battle track, "For Buddy", has a flow track to it that almost symbolises his skills, but the consistent stop-start parts during the track when it builds up and suddenly stops again feels like Nishikiyama was not just doubting himself, but in some manner was also holding himself back.
It hurt more to know that, while everyone saw Nishikiyama was always seen as the man standing in Kiryu's shadow, he never had the chance to break out of the self-doubt shell he did before events pushed him to do just that. And my personal opinion? Nishikiyama would've learned not just a lot from Majima, but would've found his footing and not been bullied and shoved around so much had the two connected.
Thanks for the understanding of Nishikiyama's change and this psychoanalysis.

I played through 0 and recently finished Kiwami, and watching Nishiki's evolution through the two games is just so painful. I thought that Nishiki was just a pathetic person, and it made me hate him at times. But, when he's compared to Kiryu, someone he looks up to and strives to be, you can see why he'd be so disheveled after trying and failing over and over again to be do well. He only ever tried to do the right thing for the people around him (even if that seriously drastic measures, i.e. KILILING Dojima to protect Yumi) and never getting any respect. He could have been like his brother Kiryu, but he just kept getting compared to him. He was never given respect even after basically begging for it. That seems pathetic, but when taking into account how badly he wanted to do good, it's just owww man...
I appreciated Nishiki a lot more after his whole story arch ended. I just hate seeing well-meaning characters like him "turn to the dark side' Because he was never evil like Shimano or the other lieutenants were, he was just a kid who wanted to be loved as much as his brother was.

When you think about it, Ichiban IS Nishiki if he went through the same path as Kiryu. Aside from having the same VA, of course.
Instead of being alone, this "Nishiki" found new friends and allies and felt what it's like to rise up from the darkness. Hence Ichi's Dragon Fish tattoo, it's Nishiki's Koi half-way in its transformation to become a dragon.

You know and even after all this, none ever noticed his problems. I expected kiryu to think about why he became like that but instead he was all focused on finding yumi. Nishiki in thr end sacrificed himself destroying the 10 billion but yet none in the yakuza game ever pointed out his traumas. Nishiki without a doubt is one of the most tragic characters in all of yakuza series

Before i played any Yakuza games, i knew nishiki would become an antagonist. then when instarted to play the yakuza games and played 0, i couldn't see what wouldve made a guy like nishiki a bad guy and even worse, betray his brother kiryu. He adored kiryu and he wouldve gave everything up to ride with his homie. So seeing their interactions in kiwami made it that much harder for me, cause we all knew that wasn't him. He really just too good of a person for tht yakuza life.

All I know that if something happened and there was a traitor in the Tojo you could always bet your ass it was the Nishikiyama Family. They had a fucking problem. All three of their patriarchs and all three of their captains fucked over the Tojo. And half the time the patriarchs and the captains weren’t even on the same side. That family single-handedly burned the Tojo to the ground. Carrying on that Shimano Family legacy I guess. If it weren’t for Majima and the Majima Family…the Tojo wouldn’t have disbanded in 2019…they would’ve been gone before 2010. Majima kept that damn clan afloat for real. The crazy mfer carried for real.

    • @umbraios7523

One. He was too busy building his family up.
Two: He was still guilty of letting Kiryu take the blame for Dojima’s death whom by the way, insist that he does it anyways.
Three: He was being pressured and bullied due to him being emotional and “weak” and being compared to Kiryu. He has to deal with Matsushige bullying him and making his older brother figure Kashiwagi mad at him and also he has to deal with his sisters death whose death was caused by the Doctor who scammed Nishiki.
And lastly combined with all I listed from above is the reason why he didn’t do any of the things you asked about as he now turns into the cruel crime boss that despises Kiryu because everyone compares Nishiki to him.
And final question: do you happen to watch Infernasu by any chance?

  • @LucasSkyCarvalho

I like how the tattoos in the back of Kiryu and Nishiki are based on the chinese myth/ japanese folklore of the Carp and the Dragon. Kiryu is the carp that faced the river challenges and swam up the waterfall, and through persistence and effort was blessed by the gods to become a dragon. Nishiki is the Carp that probably was afraid to swim the waterfall and started to envy the Dragon. Yakuza is beautiful.

      Did you not play 0?
During the flashback on the drive to Tojo HQ at the very beginning, Kiryu was the one who yelled out to Kazama that he wanted to drive a cool car and Kazama had no right to tell him not to be a Yakuza....
I don't think Kiryu 100% meant what he said, and I think his character then is almost completely incomparable to him in later points of the story, but I don't think Nishiki joined the Yakuza because of money, power or women. He said himself back in 0- he was doing all that for appearances, because "a Yakuza is only as good as his appearances"
If anything I think he was pulled in- too strongly attached to Kiryu, and not wanting to "lose" to his childhood friend.

i say i blame Nishiki's tragic on Kazama
goddam Kazama is really only love Kiryu in Y0 he's prepare Kiryu to be rich with Tachibana and yeah Kiryu still come back to be Yakuza while Nishiki he had to do part-time job to get money and keep himself afloat and in Y1 Kiryu prepare to get his onw family Kazama ready to gave him some of his men and after 10 years in Joint Kazama still prepare Kazuki and Stardust for Kiryu to come back and ready so he's not get lonely lmao
Nishiki only had himself he fight all the way to the top yeah he break himself but he did it by himself compare to Kiryu that keep fumble around and get to the top and all the wrong decision he did that make him keep come back to help Tojo hell even Haruka did the same like father like daughter huh hahaha
well on serious note i still love Kiryu just funny to see how Kazama treat his sons so differently like that meme "I love you both sons. and by both i mean you(Kiryu) a lot" lmao
