    We have amazingly similar situations. I bought a Tiger 900 Rally Pro last year as many of my Harley riding buddies had bought adventure bikes. I quickly realized the off road limitations of both me and the bike. Several months ago I bought a 300 Rally as a side bike to my Road Glide and Triumph. It's about 25 pounds heavier than a standard 300 but part of that is the 1.5 gallons of extrafuel it carries. It has quickly become my go to bike. Being 170 pounds lighter that the Tiger I can take it anywhere. Now my adult son Brandon learned to ride on the Rally so I bought a 300L as well so we can ride together. The two Hondas are similar but also very different, I have aftermarket tires on both along with the usual assortment of addons. I considered the KLX to go with the Rally but figured I would eventually upgrade the suspension on either so I bought the 300L. These are all great bikes and huge fun for small dollars.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  3 года назад

      Very similar situations indeed! The weight difference vs our ADV bikes is very significant and I find myself jumping on the smaller bike very often as well. I'm taking my KLX to a charity event ride this weekend via a hitch carrier that includes camping and a 135-mile off-road route (I'll be posting a video on that event called the Blue Ridge 250). I purchased a 1 gallon Giant Loop Gas Bag to extend my distance, something you don't need for the 300 Rally due to the larger tank. It was a brilliant move for Honda to offer the 300 Rally, if it were available last year I might have purchased that bike as my first ADV capable bike vs. the KTM. Smart move keeping the 300's within the same brand because you have more flexibility in shared parts and components, especially if you take them on a long adventure. And one more thing in common, my youngest daughter wants to learn how to ride on my KLX but get this, there's a Honda MSF training facility near us that teaches on and off-road riding for beginners so maybe a Honda is in my near future ;). Cheers and thanks for watching!

      I bought the KLX camo just because I didn’t want a bleeping red bike. Either bike would have been fine. I also didn’t want the green KLX. I didn’t pull the trigger on a good truck buy because it was ugly red.

    Generally long term the Honda in the off road/ dual sport category at least in my area of the country would hold a higher resale value for longer. Usually the fit and finish on Honda and Yamaha products is just better than that on the Kawasaki and Suzuki products.
    Most riders over about 160 lbs w/gear on will need to upgrade the suspension for any type of remotely capable offroad duty anyway so the big deal on the suspension will not really be in play for many buyers.
    And actually for most trail type of riders the higher torque of the Honda engine will be more beneficial in more situations that the higher horsepower on the Kaw. Also where is the weight carried on the two bikes? Just from appearance the Kawasaki may be lighter but it appears its weight may be carried higher than the Honda.
    Just another persons opinion and things to consider.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  3 года назад +5

      Good points and I'll add it appears the popularity of Honda is also greater to add to the long-term value. For me, I don't plan nor wanted to invest in new suspension. I wanted a bike that is ready for the type of riding I do but that's the beauty of having choices. With regards to the HP and torque differences, I'm curious if the difference is truly noticeable with the tight margins of both, mixed reviews I've seen so far on RUclips. Both are great bikes that get the job done. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video!

    • @tg8150
      @tg8150 Год назад +1

      Wrong. The Honda is cheaper than a dollar store greeting card. The torque is a myth. That 286cc engine from the CB300 is gutless. I’ve ridden Groms that feel faster. The KLX is so much better built than the mountain bike suspended CRF. The CRF is a poser; the KLX is the real deal.
      You get what you pay for here folks.

    I really like both bikes but am leaning towards the Honda for now..? I know I’ll be riding trails, gravel roads, and around town most of the time BUT undoubtably will do short road trips once in awhile as well. Having selectable ABS is something I want when on the hard roads. I can upgrade the Honda suspension but I can’t add ABS to the Kawasaki.
    Edit: Thanks for your time and effort putting this video together! Great job!

      @theEHWAZ  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, ABS is a major deal. If I planned on riding to the trails then I would have gone for the Honda due to the ABS for sure. I use my carrier to take my KLX to the trails and have the KTM with all of the electronic safety features for the road so I avoid road riding with my KLX when possible. Cheers and hope you choose soon, these bikes are a blast to ride!

    This was an extremely tough decision for me. I'm a huge yamaha guy and with the drop of the WR250r I had these two to choose from.... after going back and forth for 9ver 6 months I finally ordered the CRF300L. Honda just holds value more and people absolutely love them. Kawasaki just isn't as popular, and I want resale value to hold if a WR350r or something comes out.

      What resale value of motorcycle? Especially if it gets trashed as most off road bikes should be trashed ... Honda probably has bigger customer base thoygh because a lot of people feel more comfortable starting on Honda brand as they are more familiar with it and its good reputation.

  • @HighCountryRambler

    Thanks for the video.
    It's ironic how I landed in the exact same place as you. In my younger years I ran hare scrambles and endros mostly on 2 stroke MX bikes. I still have a WR450F which I ran desert scrambles with but for this old guy it getting hard to hang onto. So I added a BMW F700GS ADV bike for dual sport, but man I'm struggling with the size and weight. So it looks like I'll ditch the 450 and go with one of these bikes and like you add some mods.
    Everyone says the same thing about the suspension difference, which makes me lean towards the Green Machine as my retirement gift from me to me.... Case closed.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your story, good reference for someone like me that does not have the extensive off-road experience you have but approaching a similar place based on where we are in our motorcycle riding journey. What a great retirement gift, you deserve it! I'm sure you will also get a good return on your WR450F in today's market. Also, for the record the KLX 300 adjustable suspension has been a game changer for me now that I'm around 1,000 miles. I've tightened up the rear shock twice now as the bike breaks in and as I push it further. It's just not an option for the Honda. The adjustable suspension verdict is out there, especially as suspension softens even more as miles add up. I think it's a big advantage for the KLX.

    Interesting video, and methodology. I did a video where I took both on and offroad side by side and I gave Honda the slight edge over the Kawasaki. Mainly for me it was the transmission, slipper clutch, and the display. I also felt the Honda looks more modern, but I did mention that I like the camo KLX300 graphics. I wish I had the opportunity to test ride both side by side but none of the dealers in my state and surrounding states had any in stock to do so. It was a very difficult decision between these two bikes also considering I'm a Honda fan. The biggest factors for me were the adjustable suspension and the looks. The slipper clutch in my case not so much. My KTM has a slipper clutch where I wish I had better engine breaking for the tight off-road corners. I like the engine braking of the KLX and can take corners much more aggressively now vs. my KTM but I know that the weight difference between both bikes plays a role as well.

    I love Hondas but between these two bikes, I feel the better adjustable suspension alone puts the Kawi over the top. No doubt that the Honda has better dash, looks, and headlight. Most of that is is just flash, (except for the headlight), not needed. I've also heard alot of chatter about Honda flame out with this model. I bought the Kawasaki, lowered it a bit and will change out the snorkle and headlight. Good to go except for the pipe. I don't want it to be too loud so I'm hesitant on changing the pipe out. Still thinking about it.

      I don’t believe so. I recall being able to track my miles after the low gas light and warning come on. I think what you read might be referring to the low gas warning words that appears on the dash along with the low gas warning light which is separate from the display. I recall being able to clear the low gas warning in the display by clicking on the mode button which brings back the odometer, trip 1 and trip 2 miles. I tested mileage before and after low gas indicator came on so I do remember being able to track miles after it went off. I’m juggling between the CRF300 and the KLX300. The KLX300 is my top choice, but the Honda felt pretty roomy in the seat. That said, you can’t beat the suspension on the klx. I also have a Kawi voyager for long road trips. I’d actually like to make the klx a mini adv tbh

      If you plan on making the KLX a mini ADV then adjustable suspension will come in handy when you add camping weight to the bike. I just added TUSK luggage racks to mine (easy to remove for dual sporting) where I can add luggage options for overnight camping but will need to tighten up the rear suspension to do so. I’ve already adjusted the rear suspension twice and have it just right with no bottoming out even on heavily rutted roads and single track. Good luck and thanks for watching!

There are after market larger fuel tanks you can purchase for the KLX and Honda, including a rear gas tank for the CRF 300 Rally that adds fuel capacity. @@theEHWAZ Regarding the 13 tooth front sprocket, that definitely pushes torque lower in the power band. You get more of a “crawl without stall” 1st gear experience, but you also shave off some top end. About 63 MPH, I start searching for that imaginary 7th gear. I’m willing to accept the trade off because I bought the motorcycle for off-road riding.
      I look forward to your handlebar related video. I plan to add hand guards soon, but I’m concerned now about adding them to the stock handle bars. It seems that many owners of the KLX 300 do upgrade the handle bars.

      @theEHWAZ  3 года назад

      Thanks for the update. Regarding the hand guards, that was one of the reasons why I changed my bars but I also wanted to upgrade to 1 1/8” aluminum. I was able to install an extra pair of Tusk D-Flex Pro hand guards that I had on my KTM and they fit pretty well with minor mods. I now need to paint them black because they are KTM orange. Enjoy the KLX!

      I mentioned it in the video but the CRF300L Rally is a brilliant choice for those looking for a dual sport that can also be used as an Adventure motorcycle for longer distance rides, camping etc. if I didn’t have my KTM 790 ADV R, I would have likely purchased the 300L Rally as my all around bike. You will be happy with it I’m sure, cheers!

      @@theEHWAZ Exactly! I'm in my late 60's and I was starting to feel the weight of my Africa Twin. So I came to the conclusion that I needed to downsize and go lighter. It was torture trying to decide between the KLX and the Rally. In the end the larger gas tank and all the other comforts influenced my decision. However, had I been younger, lighter, etc. and still had the AT or 790 I would have gone for the KLX.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  3 года назад +2

      That's a good question. If the CRF suspension matched the KLX and was also adjustable for front and rear shocks, then I probably would have leaned towards the Honda with the ABS option. The suspension adjustability allows tailoring the ride to match surface/terrain and weight of rider + gear, which is an important factor for the type of off-road riding I am doing. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    I bought a KLX250S when they first came out and was disappointed in it. It was carbureted, top heavy, underpowered. This time I'm going with Honda. It seems to have a lower center of gravity than the KLX and I know their engines are bulletproof. It's a brand new, modern design vs just a bored engine. Going to upgrade the shocks anyway so don't care as much about how the stock shocks compare.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  2 года назад

      The KLX 300 is fuel injected and the engine is rock solid as well. The suspension and adjustability has been a game changer in my case. I've adjusted it 3 times now based on riding conditions and I'm impressed. I had a budget in mind and didn't want to buy a new bike and then make expensive changes on it like suspension so it all depends on budget and preference. Enjoy the Honda, it's a great bike. Cheers

      I’m very similar to you. 30 - 31” inseam and 175. When I sit on the bike and it sags my feet are planted firmly on the ground. On one of my last rides I tightened up the rear spring suspension to a 3.5” sag and my feet are still well planed with my riding boots. The KLX is a confidence inspiring bike when you sit on it for those with a 30” inseam in my opinion with the advantage of being able to adjust suspension to get it just right for rider + gear. My KTM 790 is a different story where my heels are off the ground. Need to adjust for more sag on that one. Thanks for watching!

    Here is the marketing difference between the two; Honda designs the 300L for torque in the Asian markets, lower seat, accessible to shorter riders in Asia and America. Kawasaki designed a bike for experienced riders who want the suspension and clearance. It's obvious the difference has to do with off road confidence. I have the 300L and love the torque. It really is a dirt bike with blinkers.

    Hate Honda red. Love Kawasaki camo. My use would be off road oriented ADV and the 3.8 gallon fuel tank on the CRF300 Rally is the deciding factor. I can see a 100 mile range on a dirt bike, but dual sport and ADV bikes should have a 300+ mile range. ABS is a big plus as well. Honda should have upgraded the suspension on the Rally for loaded ADV use. At the very least, stiffer variable rate springs with more preload would prevent the squat from using half the suspension travel with a heavy 'Murican rider and 50 pounds of camping gear.

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  2 года назад

      If you are looking for a more ADV oriented bike I agree. The Honda CRF Rally with the ABS is the way to go. To your point, limitation would be the soft suspension considering the extra weight with additional gas and accessories (windshield, skid plate etc.). I have a 1 gallon Giant Loop gas bag for my KLX but I am only using my KLX as a dual sport bike for shorter distance rides. If Honda updates the suspension to your point this bike would be that much better. Thanks for watching!

    Both bikes have crappy suspension; however Kawi made their's adjustable crap. So, it gets a superficial point to the layman. In both cases, the suspension has to be upgrades. Thus, there's no real advantage to Kawi for the suspension. Honda's torque, one finger pull slipper clutch, and looks for the win.

    Hah as your skills develop you, like most, will realize that ABS on bikes is a double edged sword that that helps beginners but annoys the experienced. The KLX is on my to do list.
    In the meantime I buzz around on a Wall Mart camo RT 200 cc turd mini bike that has virtually zero suspension and a terrible CVT...hilariosly fun and a constant teacher of line choice and smooth throttle and brake techniques. Plus when you crash, you are low to the ground and generally so slow that it doesn't hurt that bad.

      Honda makes great bikes and there are riders loving their 300L and others complaining about the suspension. It comes down to the type of riding you plan to do with the bike. If one plans on riding forest roads or easier trails then I’m sure it’s perfect. But when roads or single tracks get rutted, rocky and bumpy or if you are a larger and heavier rider, the stock suspension will not be fun. I’ve spoken to numerous riders and seen the videos that attest to it. I’ve adjusted my KLX suspension twice now and it’s good to know I can adjust based on off-road conditions and when adding weight.
