I love James Marster's, I know he isn't THAT big of an actor, but even at the top of his buffy game he never let fame get to his head. He's such a humble, sweet guy. I miss him on buffy 😢

Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy, told him his accent was shaming him at home. So, he, from a part of England with the accent they wanted, and from what I gather, a accent coach, worked with Marsters and the accent improved.

It actually would be more consistent that he would lose a little of his accent after living here for years and start pronouncing some words with an American accent. At least that's how it is for my husband. He was born and raised in Liverpool until he was 25. Moved to North Carolina at 26 for 8 years, then moved to Michigan where I'm from. He's now been in the U.S. for 21 years. He has lost a little of his Liverpool accent and pronounces some things American. Many of his friends who visit us from Liverpool tease him about his "Americanized" accent. I also have a friend from Australia who lived there until he was 30. He's been living in Michigan for 28 years now and has lost some of his Australian accent. His friends in Australia tell him he almost has no accent anymore, which he hates because he loved his Australian accent.

It's kind of a pass, playing a vampire. Lived in hundreds of different places for x amount of years, so it's totally acceptable an accent would be a hodge podge of accents. They did it with Chris Lambert in Highlander. An immortal with a bizarre accent.
