This just isn't true. This is a specifically new player thing. Ask any old player above the age of 25, and more than 60% of them will be perfectly fine playing something like brinstar
@lordmew5 i mean ill play on brinstar but there are always going to be better stages. People still gentleman to stupid stuff but in competition people want to win and don't want to play on a crazy coin flip stage. The actual change is that people are just more competitive now, back then people were still somewhat casual even if they cared. They were very willing to to do stupid stuff for fun.
OMG I remember that launch night. A group of college kids rolled up and said they had imported the game from Japan and had been practicing so my friends & I were kinda worried about fighting them, but they all managed to lose LOL Think we actually followed most of the rules except for the 1-min timer, which was changed to 2 minutes. I played Mario the entire tournament and won the whole thing in sudden death against one of those college kids because Mario's Dash Attack traded with Pit's Side B and got a dope trophy for it. Definitely one of things that inspired me to seriously compete in Brawl as I entered college :)
Genuinely surprised Coney hasn't made a stage tier list. Someone please let me know if he has in a stream I haven't seen or something Not saying he should, it just feels like he must've
Imagine Shadow Moses not being banned. Better yet, imagine Shadow Moses being made worse in Ultimate by Stage Hazard toggle making the two watchtowers permanent.
God I remember this launch. My gamestop didn't even let us choose our character. It was set to random and whoever you got you were through the tournament. I was excited because I got Dedede, but then everyone got pissed because we all had to use the wiimote and nunchuck attachment to play. It was full on panic mode for most everyone trying to learn the controls. First match I won with a waddle dee in sudden death against PT, the second match I won against a wario when we both were off stage on our last stocks just trying to get back. By sheer luck my up b landed on the poor wario players head. I don't remember who I lost too.
Same. We were forced to use wiimote nunchuk at ours, but not random characters. We had two or three minutes - stages must have been random because my first match was on the *default large custom stage*. (Oh! Exactly as described at 3:30.) My first opponent (Ike) was incredibly incompetent, so I had plenty of time to learn the controls. I made it to the finals, but a Kirby can only do so much against a Samus (that gets the only Smash Ball of the game). The crowd was definitely on my side until I ate that one, heh.
Brawl probably has the best memories for me mostly due to subspace, and I had a friend that would try all star with me. Smash 4 I discovered competitive play and smash was never the same
The person in chat talking about it not being fair for stages to affect meta relevance is stupid. That's already how it works, you just don't realize it because it's been the same stages for so long. If Nintendo had decided on a walkoff as their first neutral stage instead of Battlefield, we would currently have all bottom blast zone stages banned because they benefit characters with good aerials too much. It's all a matter of what the meta has evolved around for so long.
I know this is about brawl but in terms of legality, but I still think Spring Stadium should have been 100% legal in Ultimate, I don’t care what people say about those two small corner ceilings.
Honestly the jump pads are more of a problem to me since you become a giant hitbox jumping off them and it leads to pretty biased situations. It could have been an interestingly unbalanced countrrpick for certain characters
Spring Stadium has a gimmick that I absolutely love with the really small ceiling that is: do I risk dying earlier to maybe save myself by DI-ing into the wall or do I hope a pray that go DI will save me after getting hit by a really strong hit, but at this point unless spectators start throwing a fit we are gonna be looking at nothing but astro turf until Smash 6
As someone who spent years in esports in the shooter scene, I cannot possibly emphasize how CORRECT CONEY IS. Melee has been a horribly stagnant scene. Only recently have people begun having fun experimenting with competitiveness again. We had a yoshi dub and DK make waves. So rarely does a game gift players this much choice while also gifting players the ability to form a comp scene. Allowing stronger counterpicks would force the Smash comp scene to grow and evolve, and probably even grow in popularity. And hell, using more of the game's features would make Nintendo look on their unloved child a bit kinder
Me and my best friend in elementary/junior high would play brawl after school, and I think our most played stage was maze, even though my friend said he made the stage. I played pit, and he played samus, but he changed to link because “he’s a better character” which I am 90% sure is still bad. Maze was a wild time
Sample L Maze was where the grand finals of the nintendoworldreport japanese launch party tournament was fought. An appropriate punctuation to the evening to be sure. (My brother won as Ike.)
I used to say a relatively neutral stage that adds something of purpose to the metagame either as a starter or a counterpick. I now say "anything that stalls and further stagnates a zoner-dominant meta" considering one pixel blastzone differences is "too much variation" these days.
I remember early ultimate where people were thinking many new stages opened up because of turning off stage hazards. But that didn't last long in the slightest
Ironically it probably made the problem worse because stages like Dreamland, Yoshis Story, and FoD effectively became BF clones and stages like Smashville became completely different to play on without moving plats. And then, whatever stages BENEFITTED from no hazards (Castle siege losing the walk-off transformation, Halberd losing the claw and the laser, Warioware losing the microgames) the fandom was too coddled and unwilling to try new things to make them legal because "wahhh there's a walkoff for 5 seconds at the start of halberd" or "bawwww castle siege has s-s-slopes!!!" Big shame, bc I'm sick of PS2.
0:16 I have another idea to make Brawlternetive fall of donate to him so that after he counts his money and People will leave because it takes so much time😤
“Castle Siege lasted all the way until 2013 in tournaments” Me playing at Sm4sh tournaments in Kentucky in 2015 with Castle Seige, Halberd, Kongo Jungle and more legal: 👁👄👁
I think it’s interesting how Ultimate confirmed that the Smash community doesn’t actually want stage variety. We have 101 stages, 9 are legal, and we only really play on 3 of them
thats number is not suprising ultimate has enough of a cast that more than 9 discint stages is not going to add notewothy proportionate level of positive vierity.
I won my first two rounds of one of those m midnight tournaments because i got lucky and picked meta knight. I just spammed the special button over and over

people may hate to hear this but a moving stage is actually a good thing as it is the ultimate answer to camping when the blast zone just moves into you when you start camping. if the stages that do it are good is another question
And that's how you know someone is parroting the same nonsense with zero thought behind it. FD enables nonsense that platforms would otherwise prevent and that's why it's not always a regular legal stage.
