Seriously appreciate you listening to the Dead, I hope more brothers start listening to the Dead, I hope more of your followers start listening to them, good job bro, bringing attention to a band that is classic, seriously appreciate your reaction
Ripple is the one song that I sang to my 3 children and 4 granddaughters to put them to sleep. It’s a sweet sweet lullaby that has mesmerized each of them.
Jerry Garcia had a side gig. He designed men’s silk ties that were pretty expensive. We gave our boss one for Christmas one year and he loved it. It’s a collector’s item today.
I hope you do check out the studio version. I had a major spiritual revelation one day, after hearing the song multiple times, I suddenly felt the presence of J-w-h, G-D, or the all Source, speaking to me through the lyrics. The moment has never left me and I am in tears just remembering that day from 45 or so years ago. Thank you! Do check out Althea by the Grateful Dead if you haven't already.
A ripple encore, brining you back to earth, grounding you after having your mind melted/ taking a trip to the cosmos for the previous couple hours, really hits the spot 😍
Imagine it’s a beautiful, sunny 70 degree sunny day. You are near the carousel in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco dancing with a big group of barefoot, long haired friends. Everyone is laughing and singing, and joyful as hell. I went to San Francisco when I was 17, and this is what we did: go hear famous bands for free in the park. Life was golden for a moment.
My father died about a week before Jerry did. This song was played at his funeral also, but at the end when all the people were leaving. Yes. A very calming, reassuring song that hints of a much brighter future in a much finer place. Let's hope so.
Road tripped with a friend for months and she loved this band. Had to listen to the 8 track (lol) so many times. She loved Ripple. She is gone now and I love to hear this song and think of her.
The thing about this version is the small and incredibly raucous crowd at Radio City on a ridiculously long run. Phenomenal crowd energy along with Jerry at his best
I have asked for this song to be played when it’s time for me to move on down the simple highway. The studio version with lyrics in hand is a good trip.
Im so happy I got to see Ripple 2 times. One was Garcia/Kahn acoustic and one was Garcia solo Acoustic. The only time I had a chance to see it by The GD was Landover MD in Spring of 90 and I was shut out in the parking lot that night.
The Dead's complexity is often easily missed in concert recordings. Conversely, the relationship--the VIBE--is easier to miss in studio recordings. Go to the excellence of the studio "Ripple," but remember the vibe of the concert.
I think you would enjoy being able to hear the parts and lyrics of the song better than one can in this particular recording. It is gentle in spirit in every possible way.
Let there be songs to fill the air! So beautiful and loving and kind and sincere...sprinkled with bits of wisdom. We need a lot more of these qualities in the world. Peace and love.
I would like you to react to a two song performance of Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World from 6/21/89 that highlights each member of the band. You can easily split the songs into two reactions (the change happens at 10:28), but after you've watched the first, you will want to watch the second. I'd send you the link, but RUclips erases the post when you do. Just search on the date and the word "Estimated." Bass great, Lesh Philling!
You should listen to the studio version, it is definitely a 4runner track, and also through the album in its entirety, American Beauty (1970). Some may disagree about whether it's their best album, but it has a great laidback vibe, and holds together from start to finish. If you're having a bad day, you just put this album on, and peace finds you.
“American Beauty” and “Workingman’s Dead” are the two masterful studio albums by the Dead and deserve to be listened to in their entirety. They took more care and attention with these two, crafting some of the most intricate and beautiful harmonies and adding to the great Americana songbook.
Very few Deadheads prefer studio versions over the live versions. The songs are always played differently and we are always searching for a gem or a song that they rarely played live. For an amazing reaction, listen to the 1st time they ever played" Unbroken Chain".
You nailed it: the studio version of this is the spot (that entire American Beauty album, in fact, and the one released right before it called Workingman's Dead). The whole acoustic set that this closes is on here and is totally off the chain --it was Hallowe'en nite in NYC...
There is so much Polo doesn't know, like "Ripple in clear water where there is no pebble tossed or wind to blow" is a haiku that to me talks about the mystery that underlies the seemingly solid world around us like a God wink.
10/31/80, Radio City Music Hall, NYC. "Let there be songs, to fill the air!" That lyric just about sums up the Grateful Dead philosophy. They allowed, and even aided, folks to tape their shows. Polo, you are correct that the studio version of "Ripple" is VERY good. The Dead released an official video for it a little over a year ago, that enhances the music, truly worth a look. I know the date of this show because I was "there", in spirit, I was in Boston at The Orpheum Theater, watching a live Closed Circuit broadcast, with a full concert sound system, and about 2500 other Dead Heads, on Halloween Night. Good Vibes all around
Although I'm a big fan of live music, I so wish that you could have heard this without the audience for the first time. The studio version is so crisp, tight, and clear.
I ADORE this song. Been working for several months on how to play different versions of it on mandolin. It is joyful to play it and sing at same time. This is a profound but simple song. The studio video with the Tarot deck is magical.
Lyrically, this is probably my favorite Dead song. It's up there with Imagine or the best Marley songs. It's the first Dead song that I memorized the lyrics to, thanks in part to someone who wrote them out in calligraphy and gave away copies at a Rainbow gathering.
You’re correct, for this particular song. Hunter’s beautiful lyrics are the jewels in this tiara, and the studio version is easier to follow. For the opposite experience, compare the studio version of Sugar Magnolia, a nice, laid back tune, to the late ‘70’s live versions that rock the house. But that was the beauty of this band, each show would bring a new joy to behold. ✌️❤️🎶
Watching this I’m giggling at the comments. It’s so strange for dead fans to suggest the studio version of anything of theirs. Each time they play something you can pull something different from the song. They were the first band to actually allow and encourage fans to tape their concerts. Because of that we are lucky enough to have a vast library of shows from different decades. You can listen to changes in the band over those decades. It was the recording and trading of those concerts over the years that built them a following that really went against pretty much every rule in the music industries playbook. And we were the ones that really benefitted from their casual outlook on recording their music.
YES! Listen to the studio version! It features a much younger Garcia & voice - a smoother, prettier version than this live version. Even MORE laid back! No shade intended. Great song- nice reaction!! ❤❤❤
May I suggest you check out the music of Midnight North, fronted by Grahame Lesh, the son of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. and an amazing woman vocalist Elliott Peck. Their new album, "Diamonds In The Zodiac" is fantastic especially *Songline" and "The Colors Here".
gratefull dead is absolutely a live band they are known for their live shows that's how we exist, Newcomers to the dead family are more than welcome to listen to studio if you want to learn the lyrics but you'll learn live is where the energy is❤ We all have our favorite song and version of that song from each specific concert😮

Youll love the studio version. One of the prettiest songs ever. It will make you realize why they named it
"Ripple"
yeah, honestly, i prefer the studio version.
What Janaesp12 said. No slam on this version. But... Yeah. The studio version :)
Crowd noise doesn't work on this tune.
Heard a saying at one of there shows I was honored to attend… “There are no strangers at a Grateful Dead show, only friends you haven’t met yet.”
Very true
Ripple is the one song that I sang to my 3 children and 4 granddaughters to put them to sleep. It’s a sweet sweet lullaby that has mesmerized each of them.
The bridge is a haiku Bob Hunter wrote. Seventeen syllables. "Ripple in still water/when there is no pebble tossed/no wind to blow".
When you Grok the lyrics of Ripple you are on the path to enlightenment.
Oh man! That’s was fantastic! Phil just dropping bombs throughout!
This is the track I want at my funeral
I already told my wife that this is to be play at my funeral. Acoustic version from NY 10/31/1980
This song still gives goosebumps
Thanks, my favorite Dead song.
In 1987 the ice cream company Ben and Jerry's named an ice cream Cherry Garcia in honor to the Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia.
The studio version of this is what will be playing as I'm lowered into the ground.
I’m just so happy you’re reacting to more Dead!😊😊
Great to hear them again!...love it
Jerry Garcia had a side gig. He designed men’s silk ties that were pretty expensive. We gave our boss one for Christmas one year and he loved it. It’s a collector’s item today.
I have 6 the always get complements right until some somewhat stuffy person understands who the artist behind them is. This always leaves me laughing
One of my favorites
Saw the Dead play an outdoor concert in Santa Barbara stadium. They have so many songs the concert was over six hours long.
Loved this song since the day I first heard it.
One of my favorite songs of the last 50 years. Hope you all enjoy!
nothing beats the studio version of this song.
I hope you do check out the studio version. I had a major spiritual revelation one day, after hearing the song multiple times, I suddenly felt the presence of J-w-h, G-D, or the all Source, speaking to me through the lyrics. A ripple encore, brining you back to earth, grounding you after having your mind melted/ taking a trip to the cosmos for the previous couple hours, really hits the spot 😍
This is one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs. Many versions of this song, too! Some more with a more bluegrass sound to them.
Thank you for appreciating great music!
I've always said that when I go on my 'next journey', this is the song I want sung to send me on my way.
We played brokedown palace at my son's funeral.
This song reminds me of my son who passed in July. He had no idea how many “ripples “ he sent out. He was a kind loving Dead fan who passed too soon 😢
I played this song at my mom's funeral! Incredible song!
My father died about a week before Jerry did. This song was played at his funeral also, but at the end when all the people were leaving. Yes. A very calming, reassuring song that hints of a much brighter future in a much finer place.

The Grateful Dead music to prevent suffering
When you were at a Dead concert you were in the company of thousands of family members you never knew you had, always a great experience!
Love. Saw Ripple performed quite a few times in concerts ( back in the day!). Love your podcast
🌸
my very favorite dead song
This is from Radio City, Halloween, 1980.
If you play Box of Rain, please do listen to the studio version From The American Beauty album: It's worth it
Yes and have the lyrics at hand.
One the best out of all their pieces!!
One of those rarities where they really nailed it in the studio and found it hard to top live. Beautiful song.
Agreed, 100%
Agreed ❤☮ (~);}
In it's essence it's a spiritual. There's no need to comprehend the incomprehensible.
Jerry's voice goes right to my soul
More Grateful Dead reviews only americas greatest rock bank ever
I'm not a Dead Head, but I love their music, and this is probably my favourite of all that I've heard. Such a wonderful song.
The studio version is amazing
This is the Dead song I've most wanted you to hear.
Jerry never considered himself a front man
From age 16 to nearly 60 this song has meant many things on the path. Thanks for playing it today. Picking up the guitar to play it now.
Love your Grateful Dead Reactions. It brings light and joy to my heart truly! ❤ ☮ (~);}
Im so happy I got to see Ripple 2 times. One was Garcia/Kahn acoustic and one was Garcia solo Acoustic. The only time I had a chance to see it by The GD was Landover MD in Spring of 90 and I was shut out in the parking lot that night.
The date was 9/3/88. I was there. The only electric Ripple they ever played. It was a Make a Wish Foundation request.
BTW, there is an audience video of the entire show on RUclips
they all heart
This has always been the song I want played at my funeral.
I am asking for "Black Peter" to be played at my funeral.
The Dead's complexity is often easily missed in concert recordings. Conversely, the relationship--the VIBE--is easier to miss in studio recordings. Go to the excellence of the studio "Ripple," but remember the vibe of the concert.

The beauty of a live dead verson is witnessing how beloved they are by their fans.....they are all family celebrating music.
There is so much Polo doesn't know, like "Ripple in clear water where there is no pebble tossed or wind to blow" is a haiku that to me talks about the mystery that underlies the seemingly solid world around us like a God wink.
Listen to the studio version sometime. It's one of the prettiest songs.... The lyrics are so beautiful.
The album version of this is sweet. I hope somebody plays it for me when I die.
The studio version is fantastic. I think you called it, Polo!
My favorite dead songs😎

This song is based on the 23rd Psalm in the Bible.
The bond is because everyone IS on mushrooms.
I love this song!!! I just realized I'm swaying:)
Fabulous song from the American beauty album . Don’t know this live version . Love the studio album version .
definitely the studio version is one of their best recordings and a rare example that is much better than the live
Jerry's voice♥️♥️♥️
This is one of my favorite Dead songs. I agree that I prefer the studio version, HOWEVER, being in their live audience is an experience like no other.
Oh ya. This is one of my funeral songs. Love this sooo much. JG gone too soon.
I ADORE this song. Been working for several months on how to play different versions of it on mandolin. It is joyful to play it and sing at same time. This is a profound but simple song. The studio video with the Tarot deck is magical.
the dead shine live
Robert Hunters beautiful lyrics, 1970 at it's best.
Lyrically, this is probably my favorite Dead song. It's up there with Imagine or the best Marley songs. It's the first Dead song that I memorized the lyrics to, thanks in part to someone who wrote them out in calligraphy and gave away copies at a Rainbow gathering.
You are correct. During the show they played this with half the volume and the crowd made up the rest in a sing along. It was pretty cool
Well there you go and surprise me again! Hope you had the lyrics for this one!
🌸 aahhh jerry...💔
this song is so pretty and has so many diff meanings.

Most songs live is better but the studio version of Ripple is so good. Being there for a Ripple would be something special though...
Great live version.
It's almost a "Gospel" type song from the lyrics in it.
My favorite version. This concert movie(Dead Ahead), is one of their best overall performances.
I don't know if You
Tube tracks repeat viewings, but this is my fourth time with this one.
Definitely the studio version!!!!!

The whole album this is on is probably their most well produced and best performed albums - American Beauty. Great from start to finish.
I truly think you would enjoy bird song there Ode to Janice joplin
I don’t know why people react to live versions first…..
Thank you for reacting to LIVE Dead, which is the only way to experience them.
YES! Listen to the studio version! It features a much younger Garcia & voice - a smoother, prettier version than this live version. Even MORE laid back! No shade intended. Great song- nice reaction!! ❤❤❤

Another song where bong rips are recomended before listening or going to concert, long live Chemdog.
What is that kinetic sculpture behind you? It's trippy.........
I love this song ❤️ my friend @emisunshine does a cover of “Ripple”and I fell in love with this one, its just a great song ❤️
gratefull dead is absolutely a live band they are known for their live shows that's how we exist, Newcomers to the dead family are more than welcome to listen to studio if you want to learn the lyrics but you'll learn live is where the energy is❤ We all have our favorite song and version of that song from each specific concert😮
The Grateful Dead is a whole sub-culture.
There's Otis. He was talking to a dog. G-d love ya, Jerry
