I really liked the strategic use of voiceover in this video. It changed the flow of the video and keeps you engaged. The jobsite audio is always fun but it was a treat to cut to a detailed explanation with clear audio for the actual install.
You can always tell who’s a good builder when he knows the names of the people who don’t even work for him directly. I’m the same way, I always tell my customers that ask their builder what are the names of every person on the team and you’ll find out who you’ll want to work for.
Matt we dying to see this house complete, you killing us lol. The information is gold, currently in the middle of my own build so it's good to know these things. Thanks!
Mat great video! I just love the insane amount of detail you describe and professionally film and show. I don't know if a homeowner or anyone outside of the trades can truly appreciate what you are doing here. It takes someone who has installed floors and doors and walls and sheetrock and custom things for crazy clients (they means you haha) to truly understand the professionalism and foresight it takes to build at the standard. #lifegoals
Nicely done Matt "Zip tape" Risinger but contemplate this: Your in-laws drop by and you get cut off from the kitchen because you are pretending to not be home. They won't leave and your getting hungry. So hungry in fact that your scrambling from room to room that you do have access to looking for anything to eat. You can't find anything and you're level 10 hangry at this point. You decide, screw it, I'm just walking to the kitchen and if they see me I'll act surprised like I was asleep and didn't hear the doorbell. You ruffle your hair like you just got out of bed and then make a b-line for the kitchen, but they immediately see you and start banging on the door. You play your part but they aren't fooled; quite the opposite in fact. Now they're in your house, giving you the stink eye and asking to talk to the misses. What do you do now Matt? What are you gonna do? Zip tape can't fix it Matt; your world is crumbling and all because of that gorgeous front door you just "had" to install in your house.
Thank you Matt for all of the great content. While I can’t necessarily afford all of the details you are applying to your home I can afford tubes of sealant and tape. Always good to see tips and tricks that don’t cost an arm and a leg for us regular Joe’s.
This house is just fantastic. Love all your content too. It’s obvious that you’re putting a lot of money into it. Money well spent I’d say. Maybe some day you could do a couple of videos on how to build an energy efficient house ( not necessarily passive grade ) on a budget. How to get the most bang for your buck sort of thing. I think it would appeal to a LOT of people. Anyway, I wish you and your family many happy decades in your new house. 🤟🏻
That job is so perfect I would of loved to install that door im a carpenter from the uk and I must say we are so far behind when it comes to build science and air sealing really enjoying following along this build Matt thank you for sharing
Installed Jeld-Wen windows in my addition/remodel project, 13 years ago. The windows are metal clad with clear wood interior frames. No issues with sealing or appearance. My only complaint was the shipping method. Nylon banding was used to bind the frames and sash together. This collapsed the window units at the mid point, which distorted the extension jambs. It took a full day of shimming to straighten the frames, never was able to get it 100% right.
To do a good job on sealing corners and edges, the amount of Zip tape or similar will be a lot more than what you can imagine and it is an important factor to take in consideration when budgeting the build. You will spend a lot more than you initially think.
Nice door, personally i would have gone with skyframe or Panroma!. Super slim frames with structural glass! We just did a 25' high structural glass slider in Bel air the weigh about 12,000lbs if i recall
That studio is giving you great sound! One thing I've noticed consistently throughout the build is that you haven't been routering out where strapping or other metal attachments have been meeting the wood. I wasn't sure why though so I wasn't mentioning it.
Those brackets, I forget the name, are awsome for setting doors in a house. Makes it so much easier. So much so you can set an interior door mostly by yourself. They're like $5 at he box stores.
The next homeowners in the year 2100 will be grateful for you putting the extra primer on the end grain of an already painted jamb under a covered porch .... wow 👏
Few homes have doors with 12' covered porches, so emphasizing best practices on his door is a good teaching moment for the majority who might overlook such details. Jenweld isn't a brand I'd choose (seen some gawd-awful windows from them) but that door looks sharp. Not a fan of an all-glass front door as any visitors/delivery people/thieves can see everything inside.
Codes may be different in all regions and a lot of things pass that shouldn’t. An inspector should tell you that the door has to be installed and secured, at minimum, by manufacturer’s specs. There is no window/exterior door manufacturer that will allow you to install their door with generic store bought 90 degree brackets, like those showed in this video. None. A door is not only rated on the integrity of the structural performance of the parts, that make up the door system, but also on how it is installed into the building’s substructure. There are “clips” that are provided by the manufacturer that can allow you to install a door in this manner but these are part of the initial testing to get a product approval on the door system. Yes, maybe this inspector looked past this, or worse yet does not know his business and maybe this may seem like a secure way to install the system but it has not been tested to prove it is adequate. Warranty is voided.
How can a person find a builder with as much attention to quality and focus as you Matt, in central Ohio? I want to have a new home built in the near future and have been watching these type of videos non stop as an educational tool. Trying to soak it ALL in and obtain ideas for my next home. Thanks so much for taking time out to make these videos
Find a good architect. They will point you to the good builders. If they have a track record for building nice homes passive homes they will know all the tradesman who can bring the vision to life.
@@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb I am seeking someone who can do under 300K I thought about Wayne Homes but I want someone who does true CUSTOM for folks who are not wanting a huge luxury house but a quality home that is reasonable for me to live in.
Looks great! But I'm really excited to see what you do with the giant hole in the living room wall. All these efficiency improvements must mean that door is triple clad as well? Maybe a triple clad sliding door?
I do wonder, if Matt would have made the same choices if his materials and labor were at OUR cost, vs HIS word + freebies he gets. Not judging for scoring great prices, I'd take it if I could get it, but that did cross my mind...
What are your top 10 tips to find a good builder ? I wish all builders would have your same attention to care and details, especially around the water issues that can cost thousands of dollars to repair.
Obviously this is a beautiful door and installation. I do shudder when I think of replacing a broken sidelight or even the entire door someday. It looks like that would be very difficult to do without damaging the door assembly or disrupting the integrity of your air and moisture control system.
FYI: oil base primer is much better to prime wood than latex! That’s because oil penetrates the wood, where is latex primer sits on top of the wood and it becomes a flexible primer but it’s not penetrating the wood.
Love the front door. I know there’s still lots of work yet to be completed. That being said I’d hate to see it get damaged moving material in and out. Will you be protecting it somehow?
As always great video & great job on the door. I've seen some really nice pivot doors & was thinking of putting one in on my planned farmhouse build; what do you think of these & can you recommend any good ones?
2 questions... will you be taking off that final front door and installing a construction door? And will you be adding that sausage tube application on the windows as you did the front door?
Question.. Would readily available Tyvek tape (or something similar) or ordinary silicone caulk perform the same for air sealing the door instead of the european tape and Prosoco? Thanks
one thing that am sure is those side light glass alone weight over 15kg+ easily, Having suction cup is a wise investment even if you don't do glass work frequently.
Could also use your peel and stick to drape over the end damn of your sill pan or use a fluid applied membrane to tie the end damn to your jamb waterproofing.
Good stuff Matt. Does Passive House make sense in terms of cost vs performance in the Austin climate? I am planning here in Georgia and considering Passive and Green but wondering if it'll pay off. Waddayou think?
Matt I have a question on what are the best exterior door knobs. The cheap ones from home depot don’t cut it for me. They seem to fall apart way to fast and let so much air in. Any recommendations on better handles ? Thanks!

Triple pane windows for soundproofing their yells. 😂
3 solutions
- mini fridge in the master bedroom
- blackout curtains for the front door
- just ignore the yelling and banging

Beautiful door! Love it! Great job
This was a great video!! One of your better ones.
I purchased a Wood's Power Grip N4950 (8" with 125lb limit) suction cup for $45 when I installed my solar panels, great suction cup.
7:04 "Titebond 3 Waterproof Wood Glue" is far better than paint or primer for protecting wood from water. Just paint it on with a brush.
Great tip!
i have a jeld-wenn fibreglass front door and i can see light coming through between the door and the jamb. super awesome.
I mean....Maybe install another floor-drain by the front door lol
That was good! lol
Zip manufacturers: Why can’t we keep enough product in the stores?
Also zip: Matt is doing another house build on RUclips
glad to hear that windows and doors are still being produced from fiberglass in the US.
This is awesome. I wish someone would start a channel with this level of detail for retrofitting!

Can’t wait until Kevin Moves to Texas and builds his house... and Matt does a video at the house lol
lol Kevin
Do you sleep Kevin?
Beautiful stuff. Well done! Surprised to see impact drivers used on hinge screws in jambs though.
Super Thanks!!
Thank you great video.
Great video
Matt this was a great video! The video footage seems different in this video. I learn a ton from your videos
Different is a good way!!!!!
think if we had to learn this on our own. it would cost , Matt is sharing a wealth of education
door looks sweet
The amount of time the word "jam" was said I couldn't help but jam a few Spaceballs quotes into this video

Damn this house is awesome
I’m looking forward to your blower door test!!
Me too! Hopefully in two weeks. My buddy Jake Bruton is coming to do it with me.
I know very little water will get to the door, but did a piece of stretch tape get missed on the lower right if looking from outside to the inside?
Sweet!
Those brackets, I forget the name, are awsome for setting doors in a house. Makes it so much easier. So much so you can set an interior door mostly by yourself. They're like $5 at he box stores.
whitefeather -yes, great brackets but you cannot use then to install an exterior door.
Even a non builder can enjoy your content. I may not build but I do own homes.
Matt how do you protect that door after installed from your subs going in and out?
It is odd that he put it in so soon.
lock it with a keyed both sides deadbolt and cover in cardboard or carpet pad. The guys can use another door
This dude ever gonna finish this damn house? Like damn.
"... ooOnnnn the Build Show!"
Honestly just been waiting for the blower door video since day one....

Eyy there's muchachos there.
I'm excited to see the itemized cost on this entire build $$$
His cost or retail cost? my guess his cost is 1/2 of retail cost. So, if this house refurb retails for $600k, he prob has 300k in it.
I can’t wait to hear the blower door results
Hopefully it’s low
The world's tightest house is 0.05 ACH and hopefully, you will do better 😄
