  • I spent an afternoon in the Feilding sale yards taking photo and video of the stock trucks loading and unloading sheep and cattle. Feilding is in the Manawatu region central North Island New Zealand. The sale yards have been around for 125 years and are based in the centre of town with the main sale day on a Friday. Hello there. Henry Wilson here. I see you have a lot of day cabs over your way. The main of our trucks other than muck shifter's and light delivery Vans are sleeper cab's.

I live in Europe and I have noticed 2 interesting things while watching video:
    1. Almost all trucks have 2 front axles. In this specification you cannot see trucks in Europe. And if, they are is very, rare. Dumpers, concrete mix truck and trucks for super heavy transport usually have 2 front axles, but trucks with trailers for long distance transport have always only 1 front axle.
    2. In New Zealand there is an intersting mix of trucks from Europe, USA and Japan. In Europe American trucks are very rare and big trucks from Japan I have not seen yet.

Driving conditions here in New Zealand are very different to anywhere else in the world. A lot of roads are cut through mountainous terrain and therefore are badly cambered, slippery when wet/icy. The load over the front 2 axels is imperative as the Heavy Combination units are 50 tons all up. Loading is crucial in this business, many roads and corners will let you know if the loading of the truck is wrong. You will notice a lot of truck and trailer combinations for stock, the retractible draw bar allows the unit to combine into one for load/unload. truck and trailer is the most common configuration, the narrow roads, steep incline, windy roads needs 2 pivot points in the combination. With semi trailers, the very last axle turns/pivots to assist with cornering due to the length of the unit.

Great video Will, been into livestock trucks since I was a lad and I am 70 next week. What numbers of stock would there be at the sale? Need to get out to a market in England next week with the camera but won't see trucks like these.

No road trains in NZ just just long drawbars as in Scandinavia and far more European trucks than in Australia? On another matter, I believe that most of NZs sheep hailed originally from Leicestershire

More axles spreads the load. I think there is a reduction in road user charges?

Inés axle in the front in nz is hight betrayal to the nation, isnt It? Hahaha
I dont get It, 4 axles are just for heavy hauls in difficult terrains, i saw a lot of these on normal roads and with less than 15tns
