It’s because Leela and Alpha play chess absolutely beautifully, unlike humans who can make mistakes and can’t really abuse super-long-term positional compensation.
Interesting. A video on that topic would be instructive. There are also analysis tools for Go now based on the LeelaGo Zero project, and Go RUclipsrs are coming to grips with the new AI tools springing up in their game. Chess folks have had a much longer time to get used to the idea, but for Go players it seems pretty alien to them for now.
I find watching people play chess boring in general because I don't understand any of the lingo and I don't really like watching people play chess. It's nothing personal at all. But with AI, I don't need to understand all the move sets, openings, etc, to find a learning algorithm playing chess fascinating. I felt the same way watching Alpha Go play Go (I understood nothing there are well) and watching an 'AI' play DOTA (I don't like DOTA). I did not mean any disrespect, chess just isn't my thing. I mean, I'll play it casually, but watching pros just doesn't do anything for me. I have nothing but respect for the work they put into their skill, however.
ALAKTORN I hate Leela as much for killing her good bishop as I love her for proving you right :D I can see AlphaZero and Leela doing it, but I can't do it and that annoys me as much as it thrills me to see and try :) I think the masters will produce a trend showing the implementation of the AI's examples. I for one am looking forward to seeing that trend and the many explanations of strategic changes.
"...and six months later Leela finished the now-fabled _'God's Algorithm of Chess,'_ set chess aside, and began her long, bloody conquest of earth." --Sheela, Imperial Historian and 4th-generation descendent of Leela c. 2135 C.E.
Such a great game and analysis as usual. I've been watching this channel for almost 10 years and I watch probably 90+ percent of your videos. I'm just recently getting back on my feet financially so you can expect a donation pretty soon. You are awesome, Jerry. Thank you for bringing so much good content to the wonderful world of chess.
Leela: Chess22k, everybody should know there is an issue with the Bad Bishop in the e5 Classical Sicilian. You didn't solve this problem, and you undervalued the great space advantage both c4 and e4 gave me. The spatial advantage allowed me to efficiently transfer my pieces from one side of the board to the other. What good is having a Bishop on the board if it's unproductive? Too weak, too slow.
Absolutely loved this analysis. There's nothing more satisfying than cementing minor pieces into impenetrable fortresses that restrict your opponent's movements. So nice to watch the progress unfold. As always your thoughtful commentary and pleasant demeanor is what makes all of these games shine. So glad I found your channel about a year ago almost. I've watched hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of your videos. Thank you Jerry.
Great analysis! I know I can always turn to you, Jerry, for positional insights, and I try to learn something about positional play from every video of yours I watch. The Leela videos, though? There's way more than one insight to take away from those. Thanks so much for uploading these, the games and your analyses of them are supremely instructional.
Just incredible... Maybe a really good positional player could find 14.Qe2 but for someone to find things like 39.Qg4 or even 46.Bc6... I love how complex these engines have gotten that they're not only tactical geniuses but also able to be so flawless in positional and long-term play. As you said at the end, how do you even improve as black?
39. Qg4 isn’t hard to find. I’m rated 1.4k on Lichess and while I didn’t find the move, I noticed the back rank issue and that mate was stopped by the Queen. So it’s a simple deflection. As for the other two moves, yeah, those are such weird positional moves to me. Moving the Queen to let your Knight move *four* times in a row to reach a better square? That just sounds so slow and silly, yet it worked perfectly. In terms of how black could improve, maybe there was some way to sacrifice the exchange on the c4 Pawn with the Rooks? To get Pawn + Bishop for a Rook, and activate your other Rook. I guess white can probably defend against it, I’m just a bad player I wouldn’t know how to improve. lol Black seemed to be making too many “nothing” moves as Jerry calls them though, maybe if it saw white’s long-term plan it’d have come up with something better, like a King-side Pawn break or something, no idea.
I did think of trying to get the knight from b3 to d5 but rejected it simply because it would take 5 moves to do so; I'd probably have pushed h4 immediately and gotten myself into trouble. I guess the lesson for me is to be a bit more patient :D Black didn't really have much to do so improving the position first seems like a decent idea.
Thanks for sharing, Jerry! The flashy Queen move from Leela was unexpected, delightful, and honestly a bit frightening to see...here's hoping to more of that!
I tried putting that into Stockfish real quick and it just seems like it’s losing for black. After the captures black is just down material and doesn’t really have compensation. The open file is better used by white’s 2 Rooks than black.
Yeah... I thought about this... sacrifice material to open up a file when your opponent have 2 Rooks while you have only one. Not to say I wouldn't have done it out of desperation :)
Every time I hear that "Hi everyone, it's Jerry" it makes me soo sad. Because you seem like a really nice dude and the way you say that sentence sounds like you are sad. I just want to give you a hug and never let go. Maybe I am wrong but thats just how it seems to be. All the best Jerry, keep up the good work!
Google would have to be willing to do that, but it only took them four hours to train Alpha Zero whereas it took volunteers four months to train Leela, and Leela is only just over half as trained as Alpha Zero was. I would think Google one day might let this battle take place, but maybe not before they train Alpha Zero for another four hours... imagine its strength then!
I don't think so. This is because there is no INCENTIVE for google to do that. Deep Mind created Alpha Zero to show their prowess in ML(by beating a chess engine based on heuristics(stockfish)). Since Leela is basically a copy of Alpha Zero what is the point?
Jordan Fischer Leela wasn't trained by volunteers. She is trained by playing against herself. People on the internet play against fixed versions of Leela.
7:50 -- In answer to your question on whether there's a way forward for black, my only thought is to sac the exchange after Rd3 with Rxc4, Bxc4, Qxc4. I don't think it can work, but it's all I have.
Thanks for sharing this game. Normally when I play against a sicillian, the games become crazy tactical and sharp games. Glad to see that this must not be always the case.
5:50 Move 22. Maybe Black does well to sac the exchange by taking c4? I know that engines don't like being down material, but it comes with a pawn or two, opens up lines around White's king, and maybe even lets the dark squared bishop join in the fray by hopping back to d8 and then b6.
Beautiful game. Incredible to watch something rated 3000+ get so devastatingly squeezed. I've studied Leela's games quite a bit now and it's the unusual positional moves she makes that always fascinate me.
"Lila" refers to acts of God in the spiritual world (and not the material world). It exclusively applies to His transcendental pastimes on the eternal plane
More engine games, pls. The technology is really heating up with innovation and producing fascinating games. Esp. neural network games, but also take a look at the up and coming Ethereal engine (currently winning top spot in division 3 of TCEC). It seems really strong and elegant. Sees deep.
9:55 I think that that move was played because any other move would actually lower the advantage that white has (or if this one lowered it too, then it lowered it the least)
@7:50 exchange sack the rook for the bishop and pawn. As whites rook is now on D3 and Blocks whites queens sight to protect C4 pawn. Earlier, king on A2 is NOT safe as the same exchange sack also works And black gets an intermezzo picking up the A4 pawn with check. 2 paws + biscuit for the nookie and a fawn pawn for black on the A- file, just saying 🤔
I thinking about 2 things: 1. Take knight when he is on c4, during reposition from b3 to d5 by the light bishop (Be5xKc4). 2. Give the rook for bishop and pawn to open it. For example i think about it when position is completly shut down (stockfish dont like this my thought for ~0.7 to ~1.5 point).
Hey Jerry, I thought of an idea for your videos but will result in increased work for you. Linking embedded analysis lichess boards when asking for "what would you do in this position?" moments. Just a thought. As always, thank you so much. You have brought me from a beginning 1100 rated player to 1600-1800. Thanks!
Jamison Thorne That's a brilliant idea. Adding interactive moments to his videos would be a great feature that I haven't seen any other chess analysts do. Be the first, Jerry!
Jerry can you explain why the black team did not exchange sacrifice on move 22. Black does get the bishop and a pawn and soon the pawn on a4 falls. Wouldnt that have been better?
Because it doesn't. After 22. Rxc4, 23. Bxc4 Rxc4, white would have 24. Rxa5, grabbing blacks a5 pawn. If black grabs the rook on a5 with the queen, he hangs his own rook on c4 to whites queen. After 24. Qxa5 25. Qxc4, white both defends his a4-pawn and is simply up a clean exchange with a queen-side pawn majority.
Athinira good point. Then how about after 24.Rxa5 black replies with Rxe5 with the same idea that if black rook is captured then so will the white rook on a5. Another option is to prepare the exchange sacrifice with b6..just solidify a5?
At 7:58, instead of Black's retreating their Rook back, why not sack the exchange by Black Rook taking White Bishop to create an open C-file for Black's pieces (which also kills White Bishop's diagonal)? What am I missing?
23...Rxc4 24.Bxc4 Rxc4 gets rid of White's fortress at the cost of a rook for bishop and pawn, and also adds pressure on a4. This might have been a way out, at least against a Human opponent
The whole line is actually still pretty fresh in human play, and (the in actual fact highly logical) 11. B:a7, eliminating a knight that can control d5, is a real "killer" to what was previously, and for a long time, thought to be quite an easy equalizing line, with the maneuver ...Nc6-a7(-c8-b6), for black: Jerry is correct, the idea to put on a freezing blockade of the light squares on the Q-side is a true menace for black. No real wonder Leela plays this way as well.
Turns out it was thermal shutdowns on the GPU because of over-heating. The GPU server TCEC rented doesn't have proper cooling. It was worked around with lower power limits on the GPUs late in Div 3 (when her 5.5/6 win streak began). She couldn't quite win enough once the hardware issue was addressed to still promote to Div 2, sadly.
Leela Zero is playing more and more like Alpha Zero now. It doesn't just attack and attack; it is doing a lot of obstruction moves to limit the movements of its opponents.
Great video, Jerry. As always. Do you think black would have been well to exchange the rook for white's bishop, after they played 22.Rc5? After all, that Bishop is surely worth more.
I think the most instructive move(s) here are 14 and 15 white. The lesson being; if you have pieces in fine position and no real plan of attack, invest moves into improving your poorly positioned instead of forcing a tactic.
Awesome game and walk-through. The ironic part is that we, humans, typically talk about ideas, as in plans, during the game. Something neither of the engines had at any time.
Would 12 ...Be6 not be better instead of Qb6? What's that queen move doing, actually? It's only sitting there to get a knight-kick. Capturing the knight with ...BxNb3 next would never give white that supreme control over c4 and e4.
I wonder if 14 ... Be6 was a mistake? Instead 14 ... Bd7? Black loses his good bishop but the pawn on a4 might be difficult to maintain if the piece on b5 is traded. Likewise, if a piece on d5 is traded, there's the possibility of pushing d6-d5 (even sacking the pawn) to give his black bishop some play and try to pressure the center files and a-pawn
@ChessNetwork Hey Jerry, love your Leela videos! Great work! Could you do the Tucan vs LC, round 17? Leela had a very nice dancing horse there but I'm a bit confused to why it gave her so much value..
At move 25, when black is moving his king around why didn't black insted play a move like h3 or g3 to create a flight square? Does it really create that big weaknesses?
I guess you meant g6/h6 as you're talking about black. g6 creates a weakness on h6 and in some lines white's h4 hits harder when g3 is played. Example line: 25. ... g6 Rb3 Qc5 Qd2 Qb6 Ka2 Qd4 Rd3 Qc5 : This position is crushing. White can even take a time out, here Qxa5 and return to d2. h6 isn't a bad suggestion though. It's not obvious how white punishes it immediately (still white's position is at least just as good as in the game). But keep in mind, black has to play Kg8 eventually anyway at some point. Also the lightsquare bishop could later easily control the h7 diagonal to renew backrank mate issues. But backrank mate-stuff wasn't really a big theme in this game anyway (except for that cute little tactic with Qg4), so you might just be wasting your time with moves like that. Black's problem was that the q-side got completely locked down, so that there would later be no counterplay to white simply attacking on the k-side, and that is a longterm problem to which I don't see a solution to for black.
This game would mean that leting the knight en prise at move 11 is a mistake for black ? Or that just this line ist now bad for black since White play this capture on a7
orochimarujes the took on B6 is hanging after which you really just exchanged a good rook to a bad one and black can finally activate its pieces really well with Qxb6, Bf6, Rf2 and the tables turned, now the white king is in trouble.
What's the use of a time increment if they are engines? Is it just more calculating? And if so, how do they choose how much time to spend calculating on each move?
Increment insures that no engine loses purely because of running out of time. The engines will always have at least the increment to calculate variations.
Why wouldn't black just sacrifice the exchange, taking the pawn on c4? Opens the queen side, bishop and pawn for a rook (and likely to win the other pawn). What am I missing in that position? Is that really that bad of a trade?
What about 22 ...Rxc4 move? You would get the bishop and the pawn for the rook, and a4 pawn will certainly fall next, but most importantly you would destroy white's strong structure on the queenside.
My favorite leela encounter in div4 was one of the very last games where with black she plays f6 and take shelter with the king in f7, what a bozo defense!
I'm a bit confused: Why would they be equipping a chess engine with high-tier graphics cards, like 1080Ti's? I would've assumed that you would want a high tier CPU with multiple cores, since the CPU is what deals with executing operations, and the higher operations, the better the chess engine.
Good game and commentary. I would sacrifice the rook for the bishop and a pawn with breaking the triangle formation. Are this chess engines free? Open sourced? Thanks
“nice and easy to make progress on”- mind explaining how you plan on making progress? Stockfish seems to disagree, you just sac a Pawn for a passed one.
The huge problem is the passed part imho, black will probably have to give something up for that pawn, especially since white already controls that promoting square with the bishop...
Strangely I like the analysis from the Leela chess zero and alpha zero games more than human chess players
It’s because Leela and Alpha play chess absolutely beautifully, unlike humans who can make mistakes and can’t really abuse super-long-term positional compensation.

Same. Human chess players just... bore me, to be honest.

I read this in a robot voice, don’t worry :P
This was a nice impression of Jerry’s classic robot voice editor commentary.

hmm, I think you got it flipped, Qg4 and Bc6 are easy to find but Qe2?! It seems so abstract

I found Qg4 almost instantly :D but the other two? g4 and Rxb6 were my first instincts
Bc6 and Qg4 are much easier to find than Qe2.
The maneuvering idea was so simple yet so brilliant
Thanks for sharing, Jerry! The flashy Queen move from Leela was unexpected, delightful, and honestly a bit frightening to see...here's hoping to more of that!
Leela putting on the squeeze. Great game.
pro tip : watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies these days.
@Nash Elian definitely, been using Flixzone} for years myself :)
You're a legend Jerry. Thanks for the video!
At 7:50 did you consider crashing one of the two rooks into c4? You would exchange a rook for a pawn and a bishop and break open the c-file.
I tried putting that into Stockfish real quick and it just seems like it’s losing for black. After the captures black is just down material and doesn’t really have compensation. The open file is better used by white’s 2 Rooks than black.
Came looking for this analysis, thanks for bringing it up
Yeah... I thought about this... sacrifice material to open up a file when your opponent have 2 Rooks while you have only one. Not to say I wouldn't have done it out of desperation :)
I was wondering why RxC4 wasn't done at 5:40
I was thinking on that too
Every time I hear that "Hi everyone, it's Jerry" it makes me soo sad. Because you seem like a really nice dude and the way you say that sentence sounds like you are sad. In Hindi (Indian language) leela means acts of god or grand illusion created by God that makes us do what we do in our life.
"Lila" refers to acts of God in the spiritual world (and not the material world). It exclusively applies to His transcendental pastimes on the eternal plane
There is no God. Only super advanced extra dimensional computer programmers
Enjoy your videos so much!
The two neural networks that were in this tournament, lc0 and DeusX, both advanced to the third division. The NNs are rising...
Great video! Thank you!
More engine games, pls. The technology is really heating up with innovation and producing fascinating games. Esp. neural network games, but also take a look at the up and coming Ethereal engine (currently winning top spot in division 3 of TCEC). It seems really strong and elegant. Sees deep.
Fantastic commentary and fabulous game!
Very nice positional play by Leela.
This is simply astounding! Reminds me of Jerry's video on StockFish... 151 moves!
It's incredible that a machine can play such a beautiful positional game
I thinking about 2 things:
The time has come for computers to teach us how to play chess
Oh boy 3 AM!
Interesting, Kingcrusher also made a video on this game. It's cool seeing two perspectives on it.
I think at move 22 (when white played c4) the best continuation for black was a change sac (Rxc4)
even in the mov 20....white`s king is preaty vunerable without this bishop
i belive white is still better but maybe black can get more active play
Stockfish 9 tells me that's terrible. Apparently White can soon infiltrate c7
Too bad Leela is struggling is Division 3, go to the TCEC website to see Live games as they play 24/7
The Leela people believe they may have made a change which made Leela play worse.
It doesn't help Leela that most of the engines are running on 43 cores.
@5:40 why cant the rooks take white C pawn?
Black had three pieces aiming at C4. After the exchange the white pawn on A4 could be scooped up. Maybe. Move 23
At 5:45 wouldn't be good for black to trade a Rook for a Bishop and a Pawn?
Leela Zero is playing more and more like Alpha Zero now. It doesn't just attack and attack; it is doing a lot of obstruction moves to limit the movements of its opponents.
2:00 why is it the "good" bishop?
15:20 wouldnt that be a pin, not a skewer? I thought in order to be a skewer the more valuable piece has to be in front
I kinda want these chess engines to not resign, it's kinda sad that they resign JUST before the end.
you are awesome jerry
7:55 Why not sac the exchange to get some counter play on the c-file?
Great video, Jerry. As always. Do you think black would have been well to exchange the rook for white's bishop, after they played 22.Rc5? After all, that Bishop is surely worth more.
I think the most instructive move(s) here are 14 and 15 white. The lesson being; if you have pieces in fine position and no real plan of attack, invest moves into improving your poorly positioned instead of forcing a tactic.
Jerry takes a simple position very deeply.
Awesome game and walk-through.
The ironic part is that we, humans, typically talk about ideas, as in plans, during the game. Something neither of the engines had at any time.
Just saw lc0 v Pedone in TCEC D3 match 81. Could we get a breakdown of that please?
Can someone explain to me why black squares are favorable for whites pawns and the black bishop is more valuable?
Amazing game thank you jerry
Would 12 ...Be6 not be better instead of Qb6? What's that queen move doing, actually? It's only sitting there to get a knight-kick. Capturing the knight with ...BxNb3 next would never give white that supreme control over c4 and e4.
wow that IA is really strong!
Hi, I make game AI videos. Let me know what you think!
Would black ever consider sacrificing the exchange at move 24 with Rxc4 followed by Bxc4 and RxC4??
great lessons
At move 23 why doesn't black crash through and take c4? There would be an exchange sac but there might be potential.
@ChessNetwork Hey Jerry, love your Leela videos! Great work! Could you do the Tucan vs LC, round 17? Leela had a very nice dancing horse there but I'm a bit confused to why it gave her so much value..
11:50 can't black capture the rook? U get 2 rooks for it queen but u get the check with tempo
Qxc8+ is mate in three there.
Jeroen van den Berg what's the mate? Rook can come back protected by q if he takes r on c8
Qxc8+ Rd8 Qxd8+ Qxd8 Rxd8#
Remember! this is the bishop of Fischer!
I love a self taught master
Hi Jerry! Any plans on covering the current tournament in Saint Louis? That would be sublime!
16:56 did he say "bishop?"
Great video. I was looking at 23 ... Rxb5. I thought you would have analysed it. It doesn't work though.
"an absolute menace" indeed
At Move 22 for black, wouldn't grabbing the c4 pawn be a better move? Black could potentially have 2 pawns and a bishop for the rook!!
How come they never play the games out until one of the computers gets checkmated?
What if blaks play 23...Rxc4 24.Bxc4 Rxc4?
This game would mean that leting the knight en prise at move 11 is a mistake for black ? Or that just this line ist now bad for black since White play this capture on a7
23......Rxc4 to break that structure plus getting the Bishop and a pawn for that Rook?
One improvement for black would be to play the Berlin defense instead of the sicilian. e5 is better than c5 because it helps the Bf8.
15:32
Funny that white took a pawn instead of the rook. Shows how much points really matter.
orochimarujes the took on B6 is hanging after which you really just exchanged a good rook to a bad one and black can finally activate its pieces really well with Qxb6, Bf6, Rf2 and the tables turned, now the white king is in trouble.
What's the use of a time increment if they are engines? Is it just more calculating? And if so, how do they choose how much time to spend calculating on each move?
Increment insures that no engine loses purely because of running out of time. The engines will always have at least the increment to calculate variations.
fascinating!
A5 by black is something allows the bishop to b5 was that an inaccuracy?
might Black have been better, if, around move 23, it sacrificed the exchange, taking out the bishop on b5 with the rook on c5?
Why wouldn't black just sacrifice the exchange, taking the pawn on c4? Opens the queen side, bishop and pawn for a rook (and likely to win the other pawn). What am I missing in that position? Is that really that bad of a trade?
What about 22 ...Rxc4 move? You would get the bishop and the pawn for the rook, and a4 pawn will certainly fall next, but most importantly you would destroy white's strong structure on the queenside.
lovely game
I believe that rook on a3 is there in case if black wants to sack the rook for a bishop and pawn.
How does Ra3 defend against that idea? Can you explicate?
I didn't analysed the position and maybe it is just a waiting move.
Hi Jerry it's everyone
My favorite leela encounter in div4 was one of the very last games where with black she plays f6 and take shelter with the king in f7, what a bozo defense!
I'm a bit confused: Why would they be equipping a chess engine with high-tier graphics cards, like 1080Ti's? I would've assumed that you would want a high tier CPU with multiple cores, since the CPU is what deals with executing operations, and the higher operations, the better the chess engine.
Great game and presentation !!
A question: Why Bishop didn't take the Rook on c8 at 15:31 ?
Rook on b6 hangs
Good game and commentary. I would sacrifice the rook for the bishop and a pawn with breaking the triangle formation. Are this chess engines free? Open sourced? Thanks
White's King told black's queen: "I'm not stuck in here with you. YOU'RE stuck in here with me!" Lol
Surely black would just sack the D pawn? You have a bishop... it's not big loss... and now the king side is nice and easy to make progress on?
“nice and easy to make progress on”- mind explaining how you plan on making progress? Stockfish seems to disagree, you just sac a Pawn for a passed one.
The huge problem is the passed part imho, black will probably have to give something up for that pawn, especially since white already controls that promoting square with the bishop...
Hi Jerry, with such a powerful white squared bishop, didn't black have any opportunity for an exchange sac?
