  • These are photos along the route of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad(The Burlington Route) taken in the year 1948 by photographer Russell Lee and Esther Bubley. The CB & Q operated between Chicago and the Rocky Mountains.
    Today they are part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). Photos found on the Carli Digital Collections

    Wow at 1:02 in the background is the Link-Belt Company located at 18th Street and Western Avenue. that building is gone now, replaced by a parking lot. I was born in a house four blocks from that site 18th & Hoyne.

      Wow, that's a coincidence. My Mom grew up and lived in Chicago until she married in 1946. They lived at Emerald Av and Union Av the ones I remember. Even after being married for many years she missed Chicago.

      @@Foomba The Southside, some what familiar with that area. I was born in December 1946. I to miss Chicago, moved to Texas 10 years ago. But this past week felt like living in Chicago, except Chicago is always prepared for a ruff winters.

      @@peters1127 We have had it easier in AR but still colder and snowier than normal. I hope you have heat, electricity and water.

      @@Foomba Yes, power has been back on for the last 18 hours and holding strong, water heater finally started. Temp was 12 this morning and the wind chill was best ever 5, Tuesday will be 65 and all of this will be a memory. (for some not a good one) Have a great day and stay safe.
