Thank you very much! I used a rear OTG cable and USB stick with 587 games (all genesis or mega drive) saved in alphabetical folders. Took a good portion of my evening setting up the thumb drive but so far every game i have tried has worked, i assigned every added game with the pico core, so far so good! Thanks again i tried and failed at PL this worked perfect, also tested pulling the thumb drive and restarting the system, because all games are saved on the rear usb it loads right back to stock! Boom! Love it.
This is the best guide I have seen tbh. I like how you show everything in detail. I'm good with computers, but modding is a totally new world for me. I'm getting a modded mega drive mini in the post soon, but I wanted to know how to use this programme myself. I took a look at a guide for the NES/SNES too. The part that confuses me is when you start adding games for other systems haha. I took notes from your video though, so thanks! I'm assuming once the kernel is installed you don't have to do that part again, you just plug it in and add games right? :D
I did not know you could sort the games by the core you have assigned to it. That’s gonna be real helpful to me since I have more than 3000 games loaded in hackchi. I’m basically out of room on my snes mini to add any more cores or anything. Gotta make the tough decision on what to remove.
I have all my games on my usb drive. But after installing retroarch, plus bios and every core I’m using to get those games to run I’ve only got 15 mb left on my system. I’m running like 15 cores and some cheats. There’s several cores I’m using for just one or two games cause that’s the only way I could get it to work. Is there a way to load the cores on my usb drive to save space? Or some other trick?
@@kepeb1 At that price I doubt it. And I also don't think the N64 games would hold up anywhere near as well as the 8-bit and 16-bit games do to be honest. I mean great pixel art games still look and run great even today, which is why many developers continue to this day to release brand new games using pixel art, but those first gen 3D games just tend to look and run a bit crap now. I would like an N64 Mini, don't get me wrong, but I question how satisfying playing those old games would be in 2020 when stuck with the single analog stick and so on. Some of the best N64 games are still cool when I play them on my PC via emulator, but that's because I can remap the controls to dual analog and even run them at higher resolutions and framerates and so on. It would certainly be interesting to see what Nintendo would do with this.
@@PattonPlays So the only problem is I downloaded a Sega CD game and now there are 2 copies of the same game in the menu. I am guessing since it's a Sega CD game it's because I highlighted the .bin and .cue files. Is that normal to have two copies of the same game or did I do something wrong? Also will I have 2 files when I turn on my Sega mini for that same game and if so which one do I select? It also kills the storage space on Sega Mini so I feel I did something wrong. Can you please let me know. I will just uninstall that Sega CD till I hear back. Thanks in advance.
I'm having trouble here... Once I'm done installing the program and push the "Add game" button, there are no Games folder... Shouldn't that appear automaticly or do I have to download the games?
Hmm this is winning me over more than lunar. Just instant and using the UI. Is there a translated menu when you place it on japanese mode for megadrive style??
Yes it does. One of the first things I tested out after using Hakchi. It loads the translated theme of the menu and language format. However, if you're speaking on behalf of game versions (USA, Japan, EU) Hakchi actually exposes all games, including 2 additional games that weren't even on the list of included games. Sword of Vermilion and Mortal Kombat II were hidden games for some reason. This allows you to actually load up any variant of the game to your main UI along with your other games. So you don't technically have to switch languages to access them. This is actually not a negative though. I find it to be a bit more of a convenient. But if you want to separate them from your other games, you can create a directory for just those versions. You can always change the theme setting based on region in the language settings. :)
So i bought 2 different model of six button control. One with l+r and the normal one. Both worked but now after hackchi only the one with the l+r button works. Anyone else experiance this?
THANKS! My Genesis Mini is now everything I wanted out of it. A thought on the part when connecting the USB cable when connecting it up to the PC, do it on the PC side (i.e. regular USB plug), not the micro-USB side. Micro USB it is more fragile. I used the PC side without issues mostly because my Genesis is new so it was a bit tight. Question on the emulation core: Is it best to just go RA on all extra Genesis games? Any reason why some would be better on the native emulator?
Have an early question for you....since I can't get my 2.4 GHz 8BitDo controller working consistently with a USB cable, I'm trying to find a way to set it up so a button combination automatically exits the game. I have it set to pull up the menu whenever I hold START for 2 seconds, but having to select "Quit RetroArch" is a pain (same challenge if I hit RESET on the console). I guess if I just buy the new Retro-Bit Genesis replicas, I can set a proper button combination? Or will that only be used to open RetroArch.
I didn't buy a Genesis Mini because of the disappointing library of games on it. I have most of the games on my AT Games Genesis Clones and the Genesis collection discs on PS3 & 4. This hack makes it more appealing to get one now.
Hey Folks, i really need your help on this one, i have saved my hotkey to exit retroarch with select button, with press twice for exit enabled too and combo menu button select for 2 seconds, but my issue is when i press the hotkey twice exit to retroarch it works but then looses its save configuration, i saved the core, when i go to hot keys section again, everything is there apart from exit to retroarch, it looses its saved status. is there anything you can help me with, i notice when each game loads top left says configuration override, is this normal ?
On the Genesis mini I was charging the controller binds for the 6 button controller but made a mistake and now the controllers don't work, how can I reset the controller options to map them again.
Ok, so, when i start up hakchi (btw i never had any issue following directions with the other consoles)...first it auto loads a bunch of NES games..ok. i switch to SEGA USA....it loads a bunch of the stock sega games, some in foreign languages which are not checked, but also in that list, and checked, is Mortal Kombat II...this is before i've added anything or even connected my console to sync. Now...when i connect the console etc...all those games are checked (the stock ones) and its says...2mb of 134mb used. Am i missing something or is this hella confusing? I'd love to join you on discord but i cannot get on, i have no idea, i try to get on there and it just keeps bringing me back to my login page and i cant access you on there.
I noticed that myself but after syncing it. I loaded MK II myself, synced the mini and started it up and noticed I had two MK IIs. They also added in "Sword of Vermilion".
Thank you. Any word yet on how many games can be added overall? I was hoping to eventually add the entire Genesis library. Just like I did for the NES and SNES Classic. Again, thank you.
@@PattonPlays I think that's fair. I'd just like to add the entire list of genesis games overall to the machine. Even if I need to use a USB like the SNES. Using folders is fine.
Amazing...i used lunar which is more complicated there i need the USB stick an Hub to play Turtles with audio and 2 Players. Btw is is possible to play Turtles in Time from the snes like this too...it seems like i cant start games from other systems like SNES or neo geo with the 3 Button pad
Tried it out and worked good, my only situation is the original built in games are nowhere to be found, is there a way I go back and reload with the original games
What I’ve noticed so far: - Konami games need to be run in Retroarch. Hyperstone Heist is playable with no sound in the native emulator, but Rocket Knight Adventures, Sparkster, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors just load a frozen Konami logo. -I can’t play the foreign versions of the original games when I change the language. -The sound delay on the original games is almost entirely eliminated while running them with Retroarch.
Silvered Grunion I noticed that only the English games were checked off in the “Original Games” window on Hakchi, so checking the box to add the foreign games should include them all. However, I imagine they would all be selectable from the main UI, along with the English games, instead of being able to toggle back and forth from the language menu like a stock Genesis Mini. I’ll try later. Also: - I can’t switch to widescreen mode from the settings menu. “CRT” mode still works tho. - I can’t change the way the games are sorted from the main UI. Games are listed in alphabetical order by default, but switching to “By Release Year”, for example, does nothing. - If you’re using the Retro Bit 6 Button Controller with Retroarch, the buttons need to be remapped.
Can anybody help me? So I've added Hakchi to allow through my firewall but I still get hung up on the mini is rebooting. The progress bar gets to the top and then I just a new window saying that my device is taking too long to reboot and tells me to add Hakchi to firewall exceptions which as I stated earlier I did. *EDIT* I got it working. For some reason it was messing up when extracting the files in the cmd menu. It would flash it so quick and then tell me to plug in the mini but after a couple tries it finally extracted and installed them and now I'm good to go!
Great work! Loving hakchi so far for the genesis mini. I've been using it for the snes mini since release and really love the customization. Any plans to maybe show how to get Sega CD games on here properly? Thanks!
Would be cool to have Sega CD and 32X games on a flash drive inside of the fake empty minis of those that connects somehow to the Genesis when you put it under/ on top.
Been holding off on Lunar because I was hoping for something like this... stock UI integration without splash screens, loaders, etc. is what's most important to me (even if RA runs some games "under the hood"). But is this fully compatible with OTG USB drives like Hakchi CE modded NES/SNES Classics?
Hey not sure if you can help me, I installed games and organized folders etc, but now it seems th region switch is broken, I see all the game of all regions in the home screen, regardless of region I choose in the language options, plus the EU and JPN box art is messed up :O And where did you get the TMNT HH rom, the ones I find I can't run them not even with the other emulator???????? Help xD
Hi Patton, I had everything set up beautifully on my Megadrive Mini including RetroArch. I even bought one of those octopus adapters you recommended. Then my laptop died so I lost Hakchi on the laptop. Everything is still on the Megadrive Mini including lots of games for various systems on a separate USB stick. My worry is loosing all the games currently stored on the Megadrive Mini, the artwork and settings. Is there a correct and simply way of importing the games currently stored on the Megadrive Mini back onto a clean install of Hakchi on the laptop and then adding more games to my existing catalog. Thanks in advance. :)
This looks awesome, can you do a tutorial to add more games via usb as I’m looking to potentially add the full MegaDrive and Master System catalogue. Love your videos, the tutorials are amongst the most thorough and helpful on RUclips!!
@Patton I do not know if anyone is reporting on it, but the Genesis Mini with Pico seems to be running Kolibri (32X) better than the SNES. I am sure it could just be improvements in Retroarch. However, I will try the NBA Jam TE 32X, which had issues before. This is 80% of the reason I bought a Genesis Mini. I was sure the 32X emulation would be better when Genesis was the native system. #@KOLIBRI!!!!!
Dear Patton. I’ve moded both mi nes mini and SNES mini with hackchi without any issues. I’ve just downloaded the latest version of Hackchi (3.7) to mod my mega drive mini, but for some reason every time I am trying to flash the custom kernel, the mega drive mini times out (it also doesn’t register as online). I have tried several usb cables including the SNES mini cable. I am at a loss because I have both the Japanese and European version and the result is the same. Also, I’ve been able to install project lunar just fine. Could you help? Thanks in advance. Regards, Matt
It's a little tricky to get into FEL mode with the Genesis. Try different combinations of holding the reset button while powering on. If you are still having trouble you can go to the discord for assistance. discord.gg/d6CMhSg
Hey man, just got my megadrive mini. Thanks for this great tutorial! Any reasons to use Hakchi instead of Project Lunar? Certain advantages I need to know about? Both can use retroarch cores, so I wonder what’s the difference in your experience.
Patton Plays, etc., A couple of Gen Mini Hackchii related questions.... Is it possible to use a custom background image for stock ui on the Genesis Mini? What custom music? If so what format/resolution does the menu image need to be in? What about audio file?
Anyone had any issues with the system turning itself on while the switch is turned off after modding? Last used the system a few days ago, switched off, it went through the system shut down. All lights went off. Looked at it tonight nto discover the switch was still off, but the red light had turned itself on and the system was running and playing demos when I put the TV to its hdmi channel, with the switch still in the off position. Cpuldnt power the system down without disconnecting the power supply, reset switch didn't work, power switch didn't work. System was red hot and I have no nidea how many days its been on for.
Last question...in fairness it wasnt really addressed here and just glossed over. You said install retroarch but ..theres 2: retroarch Ozone and retroarch XMB. which one?
At the time of the video there weren't two options. The only difference is how the menu looks. Xmb is like psp/ps3. Ozone is what you see in the video.
I have the HDMI SNES version. I tried everything! I downloaded this version of hackchi(3.4), the newest version(3.7) and nothing works. I disabled my firewalls. I get to the kernel screen and follow the directions, and then nothing ever happens. It just stays there. I don’t think it is registering the system or something? If anyone has any advise please let me know.
Can you help me clarify? You deleted their list of games, then added your own right? I’m scared of losing the good sound quality of Castlevania. Some emulators have compacted their music to sound more midi and It kinda takes the magic away.
Patton, which emulator do you recommend using on the existing games? I found the default M2engage has a large lag in sound effects, so I want a different emulator that will eliminate that problem. Thank you,
Is it possible via hakchi to install the SNES classic UI onto the sega genesis mini. Essentially turning the sega genesis mini into a SNES mini but with a sega genesis shell. I ask as vastly prefer the menu and saving options on the NES and SNES classic as compared to the genesis classic. Having to enter the retroarch menu really cheapens the feel of the classic to me.
Hi I followed the steps and have more games on my mini. Big problem though! The full screen/16:9 option no longer works! This is a huge issue for me as I had set up a CRT to play the games on so I needed the full screen option. Has any one else encountered this issue??

Thanks again i tried and failed at PL this worked perfect, also tested pulling the thumb drive and restarting the system, because all games are saved on the rear usb it loads right back to stock! Boom! Love it.
Awesome man!
Thank you this has help me out a lot I am glad I can add game to my sega mega drive mini now
Happy to help!
Hi is there anyway I can get more choice of games on hackchi or are the ones on the list the only ones available at the moment thanks?
@@PattonPlays do you have to anything special to play Japanese ROMs on the US genesis mini? I just want to add pulseman
Glad it could be helpful. You are correct. Once you flash the system you don't have to do it again.
@@PattonPlays Cheers! :D
Very helpful. Thanks for the video.
I did not know you could sort the games by the core you have assigned to it. That’s gonna be real helpful to me since I have more than 3000 games loaded in hackchi. I’m basically out of room on my snes mini to add any more cores or anything. Gotta make the tough decision on what to remove.
Don't want to use added storage?
I have all my games on my usb drive. But after installing retroarch, plus bios and every core I’m using to get those games to run I’ve only got 15 mb left on my system. I’m running like 15 cores and some cheats. There’s several cores I’m using for just one or two games cause that’s the only way I could get it to work. Is there a way to load the cores on my usb drive to save space? Or some other trick?
Cheers for this mate 👍🏻 god I hope they make an n64 mini🤞🏻
Me too!
Yea, would be a game changer. I can see those flying out faster than the NES version. Even for $120
@@kepeb1 At that price I doubt it.
How do you set it up for Sega CD games?
I will be releasing a video on this soon.
Can you do a tutorial on how to add more then 100 games? And how the “export to usb” button works?
Absolutely!
Patton Plays sounds great can’t wait
@crazycasey_77 how big is your USB drive?
Will my 8gb Sony flash drive work? I just got my Mini, in quarantine in WA.
@@jmiller1821 yes it'll work you just need an adapter
I'm having trouble here... Once I'm done installing the program and push the "Add game" button, there are no Games folder... Shouldn't that appear automaticly or do I have to download the games?
Same thing is happening with me. The only folder that's labeled games only has artwork and not a list of games like he has here.
Amazing Thanks dude. Helped a lot.
Happy I could help!
Patton Plays how many games can you add to it
Waiting for an update that'll improve or add emulation and use the stock ui frontend without going through a subroutine like lunar does.
Any change of getting good scanline or curvature shaders on here zfast shaders work but wonder if any better supported ones about ?
I always go with RA simply because the emulation is almost always better than what you get with stock. This holds true with the nes and SNES as well.
You will still have to set a hotkey in ra to exit. It's under input-hotkeys.
The folder I made is of all the lock-on games with the three main Sonic games locked onto Sonic & Knuckles.
Nice!
@@PattonPlays actually, I haven't even got the Sega Genesis Mini yet, but I'll do that when I can.
Btw is there a compatibility list for which Genesis games will only work through retroarch and not the natural emulator on the genesis mini?
Not yet no.
Will Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix work?
Yes they will!
Patton Plays sick man. Thanks for the reply and awesome tutorial
Dude your awesome 👌
Imma have to try this, thinking about installing sonic 3 and more :D
Badass. I saw it today at Walmart for 59.99. Going to go buy one now.
I didn't buy a Genesis Mini because of the disappointing library of games on it. I have most of the games on my AT Games Genesis Clones and the Genesis collection discs on PS3 & 4. This hack makes it more appealing to get one now.
Yeah for the price and what you get I can see how it could be a turn off at first.
Not seeing the custom folder art you mentioned in the video? Am I just missing where you shared it? Thanks!
nice does Hakchi CE 3.7 work on nes classic or snes classic to
Absolutely! I've been making videos on it for a couple years now :)
Hi i got to 2:30 sec and it wont let me complete download the Kernel. It's saying i have to uninstall project lunar which i did. Still no luck
Where do you get the different game files to upload into Hakchi or Project Lunar. All new here. Thanks
Where is the folder art link? Lol maybe I’m just blind
nice video im actually tempted to buy one now. does external usbs work?
Yes they do!
And you can put Sonic and knuckles on!
The systems came with hidden games included but not available to play. Hakchi restores those games for users.
@@PattonPlays patton you are amazing.
Thank you. Any word yet on how many games can be added overall? I was hoping to eventually add the entire Genesis library. Just like I did for the NES and SNES Classic. Again, thank you.
The menu can start and function with over 3000 but has a lot if slowdown after around 100.
@@PattonPlays I think that's fair. I'd just like to add the entire list of genesis games overall to the machine. Even if I need to use a USB like the SNES. Using folders is fine.
Yeah a USB with folders and you're set.
@@PattonPlays That's what I expected. Thanks again Patton. Looking forward to more videos.
You are amazing, so easy to follow 👍👍👍
Fantastic! Thank you
Amazing...i used lunar which is more complicated there i need the USB stick an Hub to play Turtles with audio and 2 Players.
Btw is is possible to play Turtles in Time from the snes like this too...it seems like i cant start games from other systems like SNES or neo geo with the 3 Button pad
Yep! All systems are supported here.
@@PattonPlays but can you play Turtles in time or did i need to buy other pads first ?
You will be limited with the buttons yes so it is recommended to get a different controller.
Tried it out and worked good, my only situation is the original built in games are nowhere to be found, is there a way I go back and reload with the original games
About to try some 3d box art for it and see how it looks
Let me know!
@@PattonPlays I'll send you a picture on the discord group
Great work!
Thank you!
What I’ve noticed so far:
- Konami games need to be run in Retroarch.
Whoa can we get a verification on the inability to play the japanese roms of the stock games once retroarch is installed?
Silvered Grunion I noticed that only the English games were checked off in the “Original Games” window on Hakchi, so checking the box to add the foreign games should include them all. However, I imagine they would all be selectable from the main UI, along with the English games, instead of being able to toggle back and forth from the language menu like a stock Genesis Mini. I’ll try later.
Also:
- I can’t switch to widescreen mode from the settings menu.
Thanks!
Yup! I'll be working on that video soon.
Would be cool to have Sega CD and 32X games on a flash drive inside of the fake empty minis of those that connects somehow to the Genesis when you put it under/ on top.
THANK YOU!!!
No problem!
Been holding off on Lunar because I was hoping for something like this... stock UI integration without splash screens, loaders, etc. is what's most important to me (even if RA runs some games "under the hood"). But is this fully compatible with OTG USB drives like Hakchi CE modded NES/SNES Classics?
Yes it is!
I hope you can make it widescreen with the games with smooth graphics.
Smoothing can be done but I will have to go over it in another video. They are working on widescreen integration for all games.
@@PattonPlays wasn't the other program able to do widescreen?
I have some games that do not work on my system but I cannot find them on my list in hakchi once open it up.
Hey not sure if you can help me, I installed games and organized folders etc, but now it seems th region switch is broken, I see all the game of all regions in the home screen, regardless of region I choose in the language options, plus the EU and JPN box art is messed up :O
And where did you get the TMNT HH rom, the ones I find I can't run them not even with the other emulator????????
Great work! Is there anything that needs to be done to upgrade hakchi from 3.6 etc on the minis or is it all automatic?
You should get a popup saying a new version has come out. Just need to update the scripts.
This looks awesome, can you do a tutorial to add more games via usb as I’m looking to potentially add the full MegaDrive and Master System catalogue. Love your videos, the tutorials are amongst the most thorough and helpful on RUclips!!
Oh thank you! I'm going to try and have one out really soon!
I added games to snes mini last night but couldn't get box art to work. I have 2.3 version i bet that's the problem.
@Patton
I do not know if anyone is reporting on it, but the Genesis Mini with Pico seems to be running Kolibri (32X) better than the SNES.
Ok thanks a lot for the tip, I will try again then.
when i try to add nes/snes games it runs but it only shows a black screen help
Hey man, just got my megadrive mini. Thanks for this great tutorial! Any reasons to use Hakchi instead of Project Lunar? Certain advantages I need to know about? Both can use retroarch cores, so I wonder what’s the difference in your experience.
There may be some technical differences but I wouldn't know because I do not support Lunar. The developers are not nice people.
@@PattonPlays that’s too bad, I can’t find anything about them being unfriendly online. Thanks for your vids man I really enjoy em!

What kind of chord can I use to plug into the computer? Are there different Samsung chords?
Patton Plays, etc.,
A couple of Gen Mini Hackchii related questions....
Is it possible to use a custom background image for stock ui on the Genesis Mini? What custom music? If so what format/resolution does the menu image need to be in? What about audio file?
This is available to the NES and SNES Classic. It has not been developed yet for the Genesis but I'm sure someone will work on one in the future.
@@PattonPlays , That would be awesome!
Also, thanks for the quick response!
@@PattonPlays do you have a patreon or something? I feel like you should be on the clock haha
I do lol.
Thx a lot bro!
When you mod it, can you add games from the sega cd like the mini 2???
How do I add music so I can use the music hack on this? I can't find any videos for that.
Thanks for uploading the tutorial. You mentioned there's a link for the custom folder art, but I don't see it anywhere. Am I just missing it?
I have the HDMI SNES version. I tried everything! I downloaded this version of hackchi(3.4), the newest version(3.7) and nothing works. I disabled my firewalls. I get to the kernel screen and follow the directions, and then nothing ever happens. It just stays there. I don’t think it is registering the system or something? If anyone has any advise please let me know.
Can you help me clarify?
You deleted their list of games, then added your own right?
I’m scared of losing the good sound quality of Castlevania. Some emulators have compacted their music to sound more midi and It kinda takes the magic away.
When I click browse to add boxart hackchi crashed and shuts down. Doesnt happen with snes only mega drive. Any advice
Can I ask how many mega drive games you can add when using hakchi? I add 200 to the snes without issue but unsure on the mega drive
Up to about 170mb.
Have you heard anything yet about a way to hack the Sega Genesis Mini 2? Is there a way to add more Sega CD titles to it??
Patton, which emulator do you recommend using on the existing games? I found the default M2engage has a large lag in sound effects, so I want a different emulator that will eliminate that problem. Thank you,
I always go for Genesis Plus GX.
Trying to install either Retroarch or extra cores is crashing my Mini. It just hangs on the Hakchi boot screen. Any ideas?
