  • The stages of group development or decision emergence theory (Aubrey Fisher) describes what you have likely experienced in a team. This video looks a Fisher's four phases of group decision making and development (1970), sometimes called the phases of "decision emergence" because it also outlines a typical group decision making process and stages of team development.

In other research, these phases loosely align with forming, storming, norming, and performing (Tuckman, 1965).

"If you get through this in a mature way" is a real tripping point. I've seen groups form and reform and cycle back to the conflict phase and, due to the lack of maturity of some of the most outspoken people, recovery to the norming level won't really occur until they have left the enterprise.

Great point, Gregory. This model and my comments assume we're dealing with a relatively functional group of people. I appreciate that you picked up on that point, "get through this in a mature way." I didn't want to spend the video talking about horror stories but there is no shortage of those! Ha.

What are your experiences in groups? Do you recognize these phases?

what about some of the unhealthy ways that people move past the conflict phase? like becoming passive, letting others dominate

Yes, exactly. When we emphasize harmony too much, our important disagreements can go underground. In the conflict phase, we have to find productive, helpful ways to disagree so that we don't become passive or too dominant. Good point!
