I follow Thomas Johnson over a year now, and he is simply an amazing restoration of Thomas Jefferson Era furniture. His patience, and even cadence of putting pieces together, is a sight to behold.
You are fearless! I love the way you figure out what you need to accomplish and find your way there! It is so encouraging to a person like me that is frozen by the thought of screwing something up.....I think back to your videos and say Taren did this! Love your style ....love learning the repair parts....bc you need to know how to do that. Chair is gorgeous 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Thank you for sharing😊kim
I’m so glad it’s an encouragement! Like I said, it sat in my shop for MONTHS because I was too scared to tackle it. And then once I finished it, I just laughed at myself for taking so long to do it. And I do it all the time! I let a piece just sit and take up space because it makes me nervous 😂 And every time it turns out ok- you’d think I would learn by now that I’ll never get good at anything if I don’t try it.
What a fantastic job you did. That chair will just be so beautiful with that vanity desk. I just love watching the problem solving when a repair is going on. So much furniture is being reclaimed and saved from landfills. Thank you for all that you do!
Thanks so much, Patti! I really enjoy figuring out the repairs- I would like to get a bit better at wood carving but there’s always the next piece that is missing an arm 😂
You really need to give yourself more credit. I don't know how long it took you to figure out how to repair that arm but you did it. It looks awesome. I would love to see the chair and desk together. Tom Johnson is great to watch, I've learned a lot from him.
Thank you, Denise. I would like to try my hand at doing the entire repair out of wood, but I just don’t feel like I’m there yet. One day, though! I’ll have to see if my SIL can get a photo of both together.
You did such a fantastic job with this chair. You are extremely talented with your own style. You take your work to many levels and not just painting like others. This chair is so gorgeous and your choices of colors made it all come to life.❤️
Haha, I don’t know about wonderful- it was far from perfect, but I was happy with it considering it was my first time repairing a missing piece of something. And I just learn where I can from whoever I can! Thank you, Barbara!
First of all, the chair is fabulous! But really, I just wanna know where you found a miter saw that's off-white and blue. Am I the only one who noticed how pretty your miter saw is? LOL. Never seen one like that before. As usual, your video was awesome and I always learn from you. Thank you, girl.
Looks awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 U said at the beginning that if u had to do this again u’d do it differently…how would u carve or fill in the missing piece differently please?
Thanks! I’d like to try my hand at doing a whole repair of carved wood instead of using the epoxy. The epoxy is great, but being able to do a full wood carved repair would make me feel like I was a legit wood worker 😂
Mold from other arm?? Just a suggestion im sure it would have fit. Remove cushion next time as well but over all since u didn't do all that it came out AWESOME SO THAT'S A PLUS
Hey Shauna, great suggestions! However, a mold wouldn’t have worked because the arms mirror each other. And I couldn’t remove the cushion without compromising the fabric because whoever reupholstered it actually glued it on- that would have been MUCH easier. Plus, I’ve been trying to practice carving wood to broaden my skills. I’m not great at it yet, but I’m getting better with every project. This was just fun for me to try out and I’m pleased it went as well as it did. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
No, it’s a great question! If you are doing it on stiff fabric to begin with and water down the poly, it’s not crunchy at all. It sinks down into the fibers and just feels a little more firm. And it’s just as comfy to sit on.
Kudos for even trying this job and gold stars for the how you pulled it off! You’re a brave soul. I am amazed by its beauty.
Thank you, Kay- I really appreciate that!

Yes! He’s so fun to watch. He has so much knowledge.
Thomas Johnson is a true master of the craft. Im glad you watch him. I feel there is no better person to learn from. Your chair looks great
I agree, he has so much knowledge! Plus, I feel like I’m working in my grandpa’s shop when I watch him.

Oh sweetie. No eye twitch on any piece you makeover. Just stunning. !!
Haha, thank you, Teresa! I’m glad I’m not causing others to twitch 😂
Tom Johnson is my fav furniture restorer. His work is elegant. Good for you for learning from the best! 🌞 👍 💥

Thanks, Jenn! It only took me almost a year to finally work up the nerve to try it 😂
That is one awesome repair job. I like how you are not afraid to tackle even the trickiest upgrades and make them elegant.
Thanks, Richard! It was a fun one to try and figure out. I’d like to try one using only wood in the future, but this was a good start.

@@elegantupgrades You did fantastic for a first time arm repair. How you figured those angles was amazing.
Courageous fix on the chair that turned out sweet.

Wow, thank you for such a lovely compliment! I truly appreciate it.
Lovely chair! It matches perfectly with the vanity. Bravo!
Thanks, Denise- I was so happy that I had the video of the vanity or it would have been a very different outcome 😂
Amazing repair work! I never thought I would envy a pull saw, but I gotta get one! :) The chair is just gorgeous😍
You absolutely need one!!! It’s one of my most favorite tools.
Mackenzie Child Style. Beautiful job.

I’m really proud of you! Lol when you started out I thought “ Man oh man that’s gonna be a hard one!” But you did a great job!
Thank you so much, Judy! That’s what I was saying to myself 😂. That’s why it sat for months without me touching it. It was way to intimidating.
A MASTER PIECE! Excellent work
Thank you so much, Angelica!🥰

Awesome repair and amazing finish!! Love it 🖤💜
Thank you, Kim! It was a fun challenge!
Tom Johnson is my idol!!
Mine, too!!! He’s amazing!
wonderful work love the flower gloves
Haha, yeah they are just gardening gloves. The sand paper tears up my hands so bad when I have to do a bunch of it.
My Scottie when a puppy destroyed an arm of one of my bergeres. I made the repair with wood filler.
I have a chair with puppy bites right now 😂 It’s a good thing they are so cute.
I watch Thomas Johnson too. Another person I watch who is crazy talented in wood carving is…..New Yorkshire Workshop….. this guy will blow your mind
Oh fun! I’ll have to check that channel out, I’ve never heard of that one. Thanks, Tonya!

I would have been on my sixth piece of wood trying to make it fit the bill; where did you learn all these wonderful skills? Amazing job once again!

Haha! It’s a old Makita- really old! But I think it may outlive me. The new ones are REALLY pretty.
I love it ! So where is the mad hatter?
It would be perfect for that! I’ve been wanting to do a Hatter piece, just waiting for the right one to come along.

Please forgive this ignorant question. After treating the seat cushion, it doesn't get crunchy? I'm asking because I'm fascinated by the process.
No, it’s a great question! If you are doing it on stiff fabric to begin with and water down the poly, it’s not crunchy at all. It sinks down into the fibers and just feels a little more firm. And it’s just as comfy to sit on.
