  • After my discovery of a 12th century medieval brooch with runic symbols, I’m back with my metal detector to see what finds I can unearth!
    Come along metal detecting with me and one of my detecting buddies Karl (@chasing.staters) in a stunning coastal location, as Spring starts to emerge in the English countryside. A post medieval farmstead, above an ancient Bronze Age port and close to a Roman British site. I just closed the end of my first year as a beginner detectorist and I’m continuing my exploration of this fascinating new UK permission and getting to know the land through my finds…
    My usual mix of history, nature, outdoors and searching. 😊

    Not your average bloke in camo..
    Hello! I’m Ellie, English female detectorist, beachcomber, mudlark and artist. 🇬🇧 Follow my searching journey metal detecting the UK countryside and shoreline, as I learn about British history through objects.
    Have I found any treasure? Well - in my first year of detecting I have collected Roman artefacts, old gold, hammered coins and medieval finds. But the REAL treasure is in the stories each object tells about people and places. Sometimes it’s the mystery objects that I love best - cracking the code of time with plenty of help from my team of trusty subscribers!

    The decorations on that non silver strips ( possibly silver washed tin ) look similar to decorations on walking sticks.Good to see you got a buddy to search with.

    I find the silver test works just as well with just plain water so you don't have to use spit!
    I love your channel because you're excitement and enthusiasm for unearthing history and your love of metal detecting is infectious. Keep up the good work.

    Wow that sphinx! Unless I'm mistaken , it's the badge of the glorious Gloucesters!

      It’s definitely a badge - I’ve found reference to a Scottish regiment of foot but it may well be another!

      Must admit it was quite a surprising find with EGYPT on it - we initially thought perhaps a souvenir!

    well done Ellie... some nice finds, well that may not be silver but it is very decorative, yes you deffo have a Beautiful lot of land there, as do we all in general... ( i don't show anywhere where i detect ) because of night hawkers and other undesirable "so called detectorists) keep it up Ellie you shouldn't miss much with that machine, stay safe , GL&HH Gordon.

    It could be Lincolnshire regiment cap badge or what's left of one .

      Thank you! I’ve found a few regiments mentioned with reference to this type of badge - one Scottish one for example. Someone else said Gloucesters. I wonder if the same badge shape is used across several regiments?

    In an industrial process that pattern could be easily made using a pair of spinning wheels with male/female pattern on them where the strip could be fed through between said wheels causing an impression on the strip, many metres could be made in a short amount of time, similar in some respects to knurling on a lathe, love your videos , keep it up :)

    I am always surprised at how many coins you find, do you have any theories why there are so many scattered around the fields?

    • @miss_detectorist
      @miss_detectorist  6 месяцев назад

      I do! Before our nation was industrialised in the 1800s, with factories, roads, mechanisation, large cities etc, we were largely a rural economy - most people worked in the fields, producing food or making cloth or other rural crafts. The fields that look empty now apart from periodically one guy in a tractor, (or a detectorist!) would have had maybe forty people working with hand tools to do the same job. Everyone including women and children would be called in to help at key times like harvest. And there were no banks, so people were paid in coins, and bought everything with coins. I think that’s why we find so many coins in the fields 😊

    Looks like silver to me, especially with those engine turned patterns. I think the spit and silver trick works best on oxidised silver, your pieces look pretty untarnished. Try silver cleaner, it doesnt work well on other metals but very good on silver so should confirm it.

    • @miss_detectorist
      @miss_detectorist  6 месяцев назад +1

      Ok I will try that! I must admit it screams silver! Just from the pattern - thank you 😀

      Another tip for identifying thin silver in the field is to gently flex it between your fingers. Even very thin silver sheet is quite stiff and springy compared with aluminium which will normally bend rather than spring back. Close examination of silver plated items that have been in the soil will usually reveal areas where the base metal is showing through. Also look for small holes in the silver which usually indicate it was once attached to wood such as walking sticks or picture frames,

    nice little haul.are the holes in the lead round or square?i found a similar piece maybe slighty smaller,the holes are square on mine and in close ish vacinity i also found a small copper nail and the spikey end was square,not sure if it was linked or one of them strange coincidences you get sometimes,the lead looked old but the nail looked newish like a roofing nail so was a bit confusing
